Dera Bassi, October 1 Mandi board officials said over 4000-quintal paddy has reached the grain markets at Dera Bassi, but since cash counting and other needed devices were not available with the purchasing agencies, the purchasing work could not begin. District Mandi officer Kulwant Singh said as many as 25,000-quintals paddy was brought in grain markets of the Mohali district as well, but purchasing work could not take place, as some essential devices were not available with the purchasing agencies. Mandi officials said all arrangements of sitting and drinking water and saving of crop have been accomplished in the grain markets of Dera Bassi, and government agencies such as FCI, Warehouse, PUNSUP and Markfed were deputed for purchasing the crop from the purchasing centers. We hope the purchasing work would start soon, said an official. Farmers of the region have also urged the agencies to initiate the process at the earliest. |

Patiala, October 1 College principal Dr Dharminder Singh Ubha welcomed the guests on the occasion. Ubha said the book has been written with a motive to guide youth to shun negative notions about the elderly. “The younger generation feels that senior citizens are an unnecessary burden, but that is not the truth,” said Ubha. Famous writers and scholars such as Prof Kirpal Singh Badungar, Prof Acchru Singh, GK Singh, Dr Karmjeet Singh, Dr Shalini Gupta, Dr Dharminder Singh Ubha, Dr Satish Kumar Verma, Dr Harchand Singh Sirhindi, Dr Darshan Singh Aasht, Pritam Singh Rupal, Dr Kashmir Singh, Dr Ajit Singh Bhatti, Dr Surjit Singh Bhatti, Dr Gurdish Kaur, Dr Kulwinder Singh Sohal, principal Rulia Singh and Dr Jagjit Singh have contributed in the making of this book, said Ubha. We hope this book would bring a change in the perception of the younger generation and guide them to a right path, which is to love and respect their old parents, said the editors of the book. |

60-year-old donor honoured

Ambala, October 1 60-year-old Garg donated blood for the very first time in 1971, during the Indo-Pak war, on the advice of Dr Jai Gopal Jolly, incharge of PGI Chandigarh Blood Bank. Since then he has been donating blood regularly after every three months. Garg has also formed a blood donation organisation named Saviours Club. He is also accredited with organising various blood donation camps. He gave meaning to the phrase ‘Charity begins at home’. His wife, Sucheta Garg, has donated blood for 38 times while his son, Rajan Garg, has donated blood for 35 times. His daughter donated blood for 13 times and his daughter-in-law donated blood for 18 times. Garg said that World Health Organisation had extended the age of blood donating from 60 to 65 years. Kalka, October 1 According to information, the motorcycle was hit by a recklessly-driven Himachal Roadways bus (HP-12-C 6631) in the evening on the NH. The bus in an attempt to overtake a three-wheeler, hit the motorcycle coming from the opposite direction. The victim sustained serious leg injury and is currently undergoing treatment at the CHC, Kalka. The bus has been impounded by the police. A case has been registered. — OC |

Chandigarh, October 1 The incident occurred on August 17, 2005, when the hearing of the Beant Singh murder case used to take place inside a special court in Burail Jail due to security reasons. The advocates were representing the accused Jagtar Singh Hawara and had come to the jail for hearing of the case when they were denied entry into the jail premises by guard Mangtu Ram, the advocates objected and claimed that they used to park their vehicles inside the jail premises on each hearing and had questioned as to why they were being denied entry. Heated arguments began which soon turned violent and the Jail Superintendent was then informed. Mangtu Ram had made a complaint to the jail authorities against the advocates for manhandling him. The police registered a case under Sections 353, 341 and 325 of the IPC against Chahal and Bawa on the complaint of the Jail Superintendent. “There was no scuffle as made out by the complainants and we were falsely implicated in the case. Nothing could be proved in the court as all allegations were baseless,” said Chahal. |

Chandigarh, October 1 The court acquitted Harish Kumar of all the charges today. The case was registered on August 12, 2011, at the Sector 17 police station, when the girl had complained to the police that Harish had allegedly raped her on the pretext of marrying her. The accused and the victim used to work in an insurance company.The accused had demanded Rs 50 lakh from the girl and when she expressed her unwillingness to pay, the accused refused to marry her.After the registration of the case, the two had then married and the girl told this to court today following which the accused was acquitted. — TNS |

Man acquitted in theft case
Panchkula, October 1 Due to lack of circumstantial evidence, the court acquitted Ravinder. He was convicted in the Jiya and Arnav kidnapping case. Recently, he was acquitted in the Sector 9 robbery case. Belonging to a well-off family, Ravinder owned many marriage palaces in Zirakpur, which he sold off in order to invest in some lottery and gambling business. Ravinder has two children. In 2001, the accused had murdered his father as he had tried to rape his cousin. He has learnt to have acted in various television serials. He has been awarded life imprisonment in Jiya and Arnav kidnappings. While Jiya, daughter of the owner of Platinum Gym, was kidnapped on October 20, 2009, one-and-a-half-year-old Arnav, son of a businessman, was kidnapped from outside his house in Sector 7, Panchkula, while he was playing in 2010. Mohali: The police raided the house of fraud accused Bhavna Chaudhary this afternoon. A case under Sections 406, 420, 465, 471 and 120 B has been registered against Bhavna, her father Sushil Kumar, an industrialist, and brother Ashutosh for duping one Navneet Saxena, a Mohali-based industrialist, of over Rs six crore. The Mohali police was accompanied by Panchkula police officers. Mohali DSP (City 1) Rajinder Singh Sohal said the accused was not at home. "Her husband, who is an advocate, was there. He was told about the complaint against his wife and her kin," said the DSP. The DSP said a DDR was also lodged against Bhavna at the MDC police station. "We have also issued a lookout circular to trace the accused," said Sohal. The complainant, Navneet Saxena, said Bhavna's father and brother had fled to Canada while Bhavna was still in the town. Panchkula mishap: Army truck driver held
Panchkula, October 1 The accused, Sharap Chonjok, was presented in a local court which granted him bail also produced in the court and let out on bail. The youths, Neeraj and Satyam, hailing from Shimla, had come to the city to enquire about the health of their friend's sister. The truck hit their vehicle at the Old Panchkula light point. A commuter followed the truck and noted down its number. The police did not arrest the driver yesterday. It is not for the first time that the police has arrested a driver after 24 hours, earlier also it had failed to arrest the driver of a school bus who had claimed the life of a child and injured more than 12 students. 3 drug peddlers

City cop bags gold in World Police Games
Chandigarh, October 1 Kapoor, who is in love with tennis and has a deep passion for the game, bagged a gold medal at the recently concluded World Police Games. He represented India in the World Police Games held at Belfast in Ireland. Adding another feather, he was the only police officer from the city to represent the nation in the competition. He had participated in men’s single event and successfully defeated all his rivals to bag the gold medal. “I am happy to remain in touch with the game and after winning the top honors for Chandigarh and my department, I am on cloud nine. Proud moments are meant to remember and carrying the gold medal around my neck was among one of the most wonderful experiences of my life,” said Kapoor. Notably, the Punjab cadre officer had earlier brought laurels by claiming the title of ‘Tennis Champion’ in All-India Police Games for 12 years and also by remaining champion of the +35 category (from Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh) for the past four years. He undergoes a regular practice session at local tennis courts. Also, besides undergoing training sessions, he spends some time in gym to shape up himself. When asked about his time management for game, the officer added, “One always needs to give to for passion and the same is being followed by me. I regularly attend practice sessions and go through some hard exercises to keep myself fit. I usually participate in different tournaments on my own and also like to play as a teenager. I have defeated players from Australia, Great Britain and Finland to win the title,” said Kapoor. Kapoor also participated in the World Police and Fire Games in Vancouver (Canada) in 2009 and won silver medal. On differences over the infrastructure in foreign countries and India, he added, “There is a lot of gap in infrastructure. The machinery and coaching aspect is advance in the western countries and it can be easily seen in the overall results of the championship. We need to work on developing infrastructure,” said Kapoor. |

Chasing a target of 197 runs, Reliance team won the match in 39.4 overs. Skipper Sunny Singh and Avi Barot added 113 runs for the 3rd wicket and scripted the team’s win. 2 Army trekking teams flagged in
Chandigarh, October 1 The expedition from Manali to Bir was carried out by the six Mechanised Infantry jointly with an Engineer Brigade comprising one officer, one JCO, and 12 jawans, while the14 Mechanised Infantry team comprising one officer, one JCO, and nine jawans moved from Kaza to Kafnu. Both the teams covered a distance of over 120 km over treacherous terrain. During the trekking expedition, the six Mechanised Infantry had crossed the Kalihani and Thamsar passes in the Dhauladhar Ranges, traversing through an altitude of 4,500 meter in 12 days, while the14 Mechanised Infantry negotiated the Pin Valley and crossed the Bhaba Pass at an altitude of 4,850 meter over 11 days. The expedition provided opportunities not only to explore pristine beauty of Himachal Pradesh, but also to infuse a spirit of adventure, a sense of accomplishment amongst the soldiers and an opportunity to interact closely with the local population. The Western Command Squash Team, which had won the Army Squash Championship held at the College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers, Pune, from September 3 to 5, was also felicitated today. Three squash players of the Western Command have been selected to play in the Services Championship as part of the Army team. |
