Smack worth Rs 65 lakh seized

Ambala, September 29
The local police has nabbed a person and recovered 665 grams of smack from his possession this evening. The cost of the drug is estimated to be around Rs 65 lakh. The accused has been identified as Mithu, a resident of Barabankee area, Uttar Pradesh.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Vinod Kaushik said, “Acting on a tip-off, the police laid nakas at various suspected area across the region. We got information that a person from Uttar Pradesh had come to the city to supply smack to some agent.”

The accused, while crossing Kalka Chowk was stopped by the police and during the interrogation, the illegal drug was recovered. We are ascertaining if the accused is in any way connected with some inter-state smuggling gang, said Kaushik.

Following the directions by Commissioner of Police Rajbir Deswal, a campaign was launched in Ambala Cantt and Ambala City against the narcotic smuggling.

Mithu would be produced in the court tomorrow and the police would request the court for granting a police remand, said the DCP.

Six booked for forgery Dera Bassi: Following the directions of the Dera Bassi court, the Lalru police has registered a case against six miscreants under the charges of forgery. The accused have been identified as Baldev Singh Ahluwalia, Tejdeep Singh Ahluwalia and his wife Veedulla Veerpal Kaur, Ranjit Singh, PS Pal and JP Pal, all residents of Sector 34, Chandigarh.

Complaintant Harbans Singh, a resident of Almgir village, stated in his complaint that Baldev Singh Ahluwalia had duped him of Rs 80 lakh by forgery.

The accused have been booked under Sections 406, 409, 420 and 120-B of the IPC. Investigations were on in this regard.

DC bans digging of wells

Fatehgarh Sahib, September 29
Deputy Commissioner Arun Sekhri, by issuing an order under Section 144 of CRPC, has imposed a ban on digging of wells and digging of earth to further deepen the tube wells or fix motors. The authorities concerned are allowed to do the same only after they get a written permission by XEN Water Supply and Sewerage Board.

Considering the increase in number of accidents and deaths due to drowning in the Bhakra canal, the DC has banned the movement of vehicles on the banks of the canal in the district.

Cyber cafe owners have also been instructed to not to allow any person to use the facilities without submitting a valid ID proof.

The DC has made it mandatory for all the landlords to submit a list mentioning the addresses of their tenants at the nearest police station.

Sekhri has also imposed a ban on the plying of rickshaws, trolleys, tractors, cycles and every type of vehicle, moving without reflectors at night. Taking precautionary measures the DC has directed the instructions to guard towers, transmission lines, sub-station, railway lines, petrol pumps, canals, bridges, banks and post offices.

The DC has also imposed a ban on playing loud music on loud speakers and orchestras at marriage palaces from 9 pm to 6 am. The loud speakers will be allowed only on low volume. The ban orders will remain in force till November 26.

Dental society president honoured

Patiala, September 29
The president of Punjabi Dental Society, India chapter, Dr Vinay Goyal, was honored for his dedication and outstanding contribution towards the welfare of the general public by Punjabi Dental Society (USA). From last 14 years, Goyal has been conducting various eye camps and dental awareness camps across the rural regions of the state.

Dr Vinay Goyal was honoured by Dr Marwah and Dr DP Singh Nagra, chairman and co-founder of Punjabi Dental Society (USA).

Marwah and Nagra requested Goyal to work with law makers of Punjab to put more emphasis on sterilisation and motivated him to continue practicing in rural areas of Punjab to safeguard the health of general public.

Punjabi Dental Society, established in 1999 in the USA, has 3500 dentist members in California, with various chapters in other parts of the world as well. — TNS

Path opened after senior cops’ intervention in Kalka

Kalka, September 29
A public pathway in Dollan village, adjacent to Kalka, which was fenced by a Haryana police constable, was opened for public after the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) and Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of Haryana intervened in the matter.

Gurdial Singh, a social worker and a former sarpach of the area, alleged that three months back, the pathway in the village was obstructed by Bala Ram, a resident of the same village. The villagers brought the matter into the notice of Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Kalka, following which the station house officer (SHO), Kalka, opened the pathway on July 19. But the constable again fenced the pathway.

It was only after a delegation met the ADGP and DCP, who further issued directives to the local police administration to look into the matter. The pathway was opened for public only after the SHO, Kalka, confirmed the revenue record. — OC

The Kalka-Pinjore railway crossing on NH-22, which remained closed for essential maintenance work of the rail track from 7 am to 9 pm today, caused great inconvenience to the commuters. The highway traffic was diverted to Kalka through newly constructed Pinjore-Parwanoo bypass-via-Tipra-Kalka narrow link road.

The traffic disruption continued throughout the day on the Tipra-Kalka link road-via-Rambagh. Commuters faced all the more inconvenience as the road was already in a deplorable state due to the alleged apathetic attitude adopted by the local administration and authorities concerned.

500 examined at eye camp

Dera Bassi, September 29
As many as 500 patients were checked up during a free-of-cost eye camp organised by different social organistations, such as Saheed Bhagat Singh Naujwan Club, Rotary Club, at Gurdwara Deehati today.

The camp was inaugurated by Chief Parliamentary Secretary NK Sharma. A team of doctors from Mission hospital, Ambala city, led by Dr Suneel Sadiq and Dr Nalini Kunnar, examined the patients. — OC

Spice Mobiles, dealer penalised

The UT Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has directed Spice Mobiles and a city-based dealer to refund the cost of a mobile handset purchased by the complainant that was found defective.

Setting aside the order of the district forum which implied the respondents to get the mobile repaired free of cost, the commission directed the managing director of Spice Mobiles and manager, Vignesh Services, Sector 34, to refund Rs 3,400 to the complainant.

The complainant had purchased a Spice M7070 mobile handset of black colour from Spice Retail Ltd. The mobile was under a warranty period of one year from the date of its purchase. It was stated that the mobile started malfunctioning as its camera stopped working.

The complaint was also sent to the Spice Mobiles MD. The complainant received an SMS on her cellphone that the mobile handset had been repaired and she was asked to collect it. When the complainant visited the dealer to collect the handset, it was noticed that the defects were not rectified and some of the keys of the mobile had also stopped functioning.

The complainant again gave the handset for replacement/ repair. The commission directed the parties to pay Rs 3,000 as compensation for mental agony and physical harassment, besides Rs 1,000 cost of litigation to the complainant.

Four mobikes stolen

Vehicle thieves stole four motorcycles from different parking lots in the city on Saturday night. Santosh S of the PGI reported that his motorcycle bearing a Tamilnadu registration number was parked in the parking lot of the PGI when it was stolen.

Another motorcycle of Rohtash Sharma of Mani Majra was stolen from the NAC parking area. Manjit Singh of Sector 40 reported that his Bullet motorcycle bearing a Punjab registration number was stolen from outside his house. Rama Shankar of Sector 46 reported that his motorcycle was stolen from outside his house. The police has registered four cases of thefts.

Purse snatched

Two unidentified motorcyclists escaped after snatching a purse from Savitri Patiyal, a Naya Gaon resident, near Khuda Ali Sher village near Sector 11 on Saturday night. The victim was walking outside a bank when the motorcyclists snatched her perse from her. The purse contained a gold chain, some cash, ATM and PAN card. A case was registered at the Sector 11 police station.

PNB to cross swords with PSB

The hockey side of Punjab National Bank (PNB) will lock horns against Punjab and Sindh Bank (PSB), in the finals of 43rd SN Vohra’s All-India Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament, on September 30, at the Hockey Stadium, Sports Complex, Sector 42, here.

In the semifinals played, here today, the PNB side defeated Rail Coach Factory (RCF), Kapurthala, by 4-2 while the Punjab and Sind Bank blanked the Punjab Police at 5-0. In the first match, Ajitesh Roy of the PNB scored the first goal in the 6th minute through an awarded penalty corner and after the minutes Jatinder scored the second again through a penalty corner.

The team extended their lead by Harpreet in the 13th minute. Down to three goals, the RCF lads made a come back and Karanpal scored the first goal in the 41st minute while Gagandeep followed him to score the second in the 48th minute. But even after reducing the margin, the team failed to match the rival’s momentum and conceded the fourth goal in the 58th minute when Damandeep chipped in the 58th minute.

In the second match, Punjab and Sind Bank defeated Punjab Police by 5-0. Karamjit Singh (9th minute) Ajit Singh (31st minute), Perminder Singh (35th minute), Karanjit Singh (67th minute) and Gaganpreet Singh (69th minute) scored a goal each for their team.

All geared up for Raid De Himalaya

Chandigarh’s Vaneeta Kang and Delhi’s Cheshta Sood are all set to participate in the 15th Maruti Suzuki Raid De Himalaya race starting from October 4 to 12. Vaneeta and Cheshta Sood (as her navigator) will be travelling from Manali and will go through some rough patches, including Khardung La and Wari La in Leh.

“The Raid is one of the top ten toughest motorsport rallies in the world and with confirming my participation in this event, I have attained what I dreamt,” said Vaneeta. Adding further, “My 12-year-old son, Gurmehar, have always supported me to live my passion and it’s his support that I have the confidence to participate in this championship,” said Vaneeta. On her partner, she added, “I hope, our team-work will fall as planned and we will able to give our best in the rally. I would be competing in the Raid Adventure Category that follows Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) format. And Cheshta’s role will remain as important as mine during the rallies,” said Vaneeta.

The Raid will begin from Shimla and will go through difficult stretches of Kaza and the Monastery Necklace, Khardung La, Wari La, the temperamental Nubra Valley and will finish in Leh.

Raid Xtreme (4X4): All-out speed category, 37 teams competing (each team comprises of a driver and a navigator).

Raid Xtreme: Motorcycles and Quads (52 bikers competing).

Raid Adventure: This category follows the Time-Speed Distance format. As many as 61 teams competing (each time comprises a driver and a navigator).

Himal bags chess title

Chandigarh, September 29
Himal Gusain of GGSD College, Sector 32, bagged the title of 24th Chandigarh Chess Open Championship, concluded at the St Xavier’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, here today.

Himal secured 6.5 points to bag the championship for the seventh time Naveen Bansal with 5.5 points ended at second spot while Tarini Goyal of Sacred Heart School with 5.5 secured the third place in the competition. Sanjeev Biswas finished fourth with 5.5 points. A total of 46 players participated in this championship and top four ranking players will represent Chandigarh at the National Challengers Championship to be held at Bhopal from October 12 to 22.

Madhya Pradesh team defeat ONGC in cricket

The team of Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) defeated the ONGC cricket team, during a match of ongoing 20th All-India JP Atray Memorial Cricket Championship, being held at the Cricket Stadium, Sector 16, here today.

After electing to bat first, the ONGC team was restricted to 195 runs in 49.5 overs. Prashant Bhandari and Suhail Sharma contributed 29 runs in their team’s total. For the MPCA team, Ankit Sharma remains the top wicket-taker by claiming 3 for 31 while Sanjay Mishra, Vijit Rana and Chander Kant Sakure claimed two wickets each. In their innings, the MPCA side scored 202 in 47.3 overs with openers Vikrant Singh and A Samad adding 75 runs for the first wicket before Vikrant was stumped by Ajay Ratara off Parveen for 26 runs.

In the meanwhile, the match was stopped for a while with A Samad of the MPCA and bowler Waqar Ahmed of the ONGC indulged in heated arguments. Reportedly Ahmed, reacting on sledging, indulged in a verbal fight that the verbal fight took a serious turn. Acting on misbehavior on field, the field umpires penalised Waqar Ahmed for one session. The Haryana Cricket Association (HCA) congratulated Anirudh Chaudhary, secretary of the Haryana Cricket Association (HCA), who represented the association in the AGM of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and was elected as the treasurer of the national cricketing body.

The son of a former BCCI president, Ranbir Singh Mahendra was the manager of the Indian team for the 2011 Test tour of England. “Anirudh has been instrumental in transforming the cricketing set-up in the state and the cricket academy which the association runs boasts of systems available only at the national cricket academy,” said Surinder Singh Baijee, honorary secretary of the HCA.
