Hands up!
One thousand episodes in eight years...Chandramukhi Chautala has sure kept the viewers hooked on to the popular show FIR! In Chandigarh on Thursday, Kavita Kaushik aka Chandramukhi Chautala looks resplendent in a bright suit and jewellery; her tall, lithe frame commanding authority sans her uniform.
She is one-off TV actor who has enjoyed so much support of the fans that the show had to re-do the format and bring her back on popular demand after the brief hiatus! For this recognition and love, Kavita is thankful to the almighty and doesn't mind sharing her secret of success. "See, I don't talk, do or even think negative. I put my best efforts in my work; be good to all around and remain cheerful," says Kavita. The lone woman (most of the times except a hairdresser or character actors once in a while) amongst the hundred men on the set that demands a nine-to-nine schedule, Kavita enjoys what men do to eat. "Samosas, chai, food, mutton...I eat a lot," says the actor who resorts to some yoga and little meditation when her cheeks go plump! "Trust me if you are happy all turns out to be well," says Kavita who places the credit of her 'naturally' beautiful skin to her 'not drinking or smoking way of life'. Playing Chandramukhi Chautala is what she loves. "It doesn't require me to dress up or wear makeup, which is otherwise the most stringent requirement for any TV actor," says Kavita adding, "and it gives me the liberty to experiment every day with my role." Eight years is a long span but for her, it's as if "it just started yesterday!" She shares the interesting anecdote that made her say yes to the role in the first place. "My dad is an ex-cop. And when as a kid I would ask him what you would want me to be, he would say, 'I want to see you in uniform'. I signed SAB TV's FIR to fulfill his wish and see it worked." Born to a Rajasthani dad and a Bengali mother, Kavita got the knack of picking up accents from her dad. "He would talk to his subordinates Are balkon. His words, accent and general ease in a police station are what I have learnt by experiencing it first-hand while growing up." Her Haryanvi accent might just be fine, but she gets to hear all versions of it and some pretty bad ones as fans try to talk to her in makeshift Haryanvi. "Part of the deal," she flashes a smile. From aiming to be a rickshawala (my mum would say if you don't study, you will have to ply a rickshaw and I was happy to do that than study) to a doctor (for money they earn) or a teacher (all the vacations they get), Kavita is in the right spot enjoying the limelight and her work, which she hopes to continue for the next eight years and more! mona@tribunemail.com
Male
Chandramukhi Chautala needs someone equally commanding opposite her and this time it's Bhola Pandit (Vipul Roy) trying his luck at SAB's FIR. A daring, totally exaggerated character, Vipul's entry has got thumbs-up from the critics. "It's a fun character who aims something and ends at something else," says Vipul. Encouragement is all he's received from the established cast. "I already feel like a part of the team." If Vipul is the novelty in the show, Gopi (Gopi Bhalla) remains the staple with his 'what is the' dialogues. Having worked in many Punjabi films, he is happy with the younger lot of actors, directors, producers in the industry. He has plenty of offers, but FIR is his focus, "FIR is fun and I will continue with it; other work only on the side."

Look no further
Twenty years is a lot of time to change the way Bollywood cakes up make-up. To layer down the foundation, to celebrate the skin tone of Indian women, to look natural yet classy…it actually took two long decades for Mickey Contractor to remote control the make-up industry in transition mode!
Now that it has, Mickey finds his journey of thirty-five years in the industry fulfilling; his efforts bearing fruit. A reassurance of the same often comes from actresses who are comfortable in their own skin and in turn are role models for most of the Indian women. It also underlines the fact that fashion is again dictated by faces of Bollywood and not fashion magazines. "Women follow trends that are set by Bollywood. They aspire to look like Kareena Kapoor, Aiswarya Rai…they are the ones who dot the covers of fashion magazines. So if Bollywood changes, effects will seep further," says Mickey, the face of Indian make-up industry and director of make-up artistry, MAC cosmetics India, who was in Chandigarh on Thursday to launch the store. Mickey is forthcoming and humble, but doesn't wiggle once while claiming that he is the best in the industry and has changed it for good. He has worked with the best in Bollywood and the fashion industry. It's he who has brought the concept of 'no-make-up' look to India. "In fact, it is the toughest to attain, as it requires expertise at blending foundation shades till it mixes with the colour of the skin." His association with Mac began in 2005; post that changes were introduced. "I got to know better what's happening internationally." To begin with, Mickey started as a hair-dresser and switched to make-up only when Helen, his inspiration to be a part of the glamour industry, suggested that he learn the art of make-up. "Before that men in the industry were only allowed to do hair-dos of actresses. Training with Pandhari Juker gave me the motivation to try my hand at make-up." His last venture in Bollywood was Student of the Year, in which he gave Alia Bhatt the bright-lipper-look, which set a trend. Making fashion statements is not easy, especially in Bollywood, "A film takes at least a year to release, so you have to decide the look of the actor that is ahead of time." Rani Mukherjee's 'smoky eyes' look in Chalte Chalte was also his innovation. "It's the best bet for a party. Use darker shade for a night event, and bronze and brown for a day party." Of all the actresses he has worked with, he finds Aishwarya Rai and Deepika Padukone most experimental. Aishwarya Rai's Kajrare look was a clincher, with only her eye make-up and the same was Deepika's in Karthik Calling Karthik. "You won't believe that didn't put on their faces even a drop of foundation." Besides films, Mickey has done bridal make-up for Bollywood faces; Kareena Kapoor being the latest. Mickey rues the fact that Indian women haven't still started loving their skin tone. No wonder cosmetic companies have floated plethora of fairness creams in the market. The only solution to that, he suggests, is, "Keep promoting the natural skin shade. Highlight how women in the West crave for a tanned complexion. Inform brides that they should look brighter on their D-day and not fairer." As to what is the best make-up bet, he says, "It can't be defined. It's all about trial and error." He adds that most of the brides don't look half as good on their wedding because they take a dip in foundation." In a nutshell, love thyself! ashima@tribunemail.com

Acting is what happened to Sayantani Ghosh and this actor is pretty happy with her lot! Playing Satyavati is Mahabharat, Sayantani totally loved being part of the mythological story!
In Chandigarh on Thursday, Sayantani talks about work and her dreams. "TV has revolutionised the game for aspiring actors. There are so many options today," says the actor who grew up in Kolkata. Post a few Bengali movies, she landed in Mumbai to try her luck and worked hard from day one. "I would credit my talent and luck to get me in a steady place," says the actor, who's proud to be independent since she was nineteen years of age. Soaps and reality shows, Sayantani is kicked about her latest project. "Being on the Mahabharat sets has been challenging and fulfilling at the same time. Donning the period costumes, jewellery; speaking in chaste Hindi has been a demanding task," says Sayantani who got loads of appreciation for her language. "Being Bengali, Hindi didn't come easy. Even more difficult was to stick to chaste Hindi." She has loads to share, "Mahabharat has so many layers; so many different plots, angles waiting to be known and explored." Having had the broad idea about the epic, the more Sayantani has known it, the more she wants to know. Dare her on the comparisons that the present serial is bound to get with the iconic BR Chopra's, she says, "We are not even trying to match that. Mahabharat is one story with immense potential. We have explored new angles; digital tie-ups aimed at the youth are really going to be very exciting." Currently focused on Mahabharat, Sayantani's next Bengali movie is ready for release. "Bengali cinema had taken rapid strides in the last few years. They have become technologically advanced and shooting takes place in Greece, Egypt et al." So is it Bollywood movies next? "If that happens it will be good; I am proud of what I have achieved so far, TV is cool with me!" mona@tribunemail.com

Opulent opera
There are props like bricks, pebbles, trunk, black robe, a shrub and daggers lying around…all that pervades the pin-drop silence is the music of the opera and all that resonates aloud is the intensity of the performers. But then a dialogue with death can't have a subtle effect on the five senses.
Neelam Man Singh's workshop on her upcoming opera Nachiketa is in progress. "Nachiketa is a Kathoupanishad…it's a dialogue with death. The opera is based on a Libretto by Ariel Dorfman, who was also the toast of the Jaipur Literature Festival this year," she fills in the initial blanks. Nachiketa from the Upanishads is the story of a child who was taught life's lessons by the God of Death. "When Ariel Dorfman, a Chilean, came to know about the story of Nachiketa, he connected it with his experience in exile. He questions life, journey, sorrow, death, talks of transformation etc." She adds, "For the four to five days that we've been working, we've pulled out moments from the texts and worked on those moments." While the workshop is on and the rehearsals are in full swing, the first show happens in London during the last week of next month. "We'll be doing the India tour next year in March." While the voices are all from England, the dancer in the opera is played by Hema Sundari Vellaluru. Shares Neelam Man Singh, "I'd never done an opera before and it's a classical genre; with this I enter into an uncharted terrain." Dramatising the journey through texts and visual elements couldn't have been an easier task either. In a five-minute peep into the journey, Ramnjit Kaur, brings in elements like bricks and daggers, breaking the former and stabbing herself with the later. "Objects tell you a story and take it forward. My act of breaking bricks became a part of my body percussion, while the daggers are synonymous with the harsh world; the trunk signifies the burden of whole life." Dance along The dancer in the opera is played by Hema Sundari Vellaluru, who trained in Bharatnatyam and Kuchipudi for fifteen long years before entering into contemporary dance. "I started freelancing in 2008 and have mostly worked on projects outside India." She adds, "In 2010, I was in Venice for six months doing a dance programme where I learnt a lot about the European way of dancing. I have done a duet which later became a collaboration Starting Point No 3, with a Felix Buerkle. I am currently working on a project with Japanese choreographer Hiroaki Umeda." The fact that she's mostly taken up projects outside India is a matter of choice rather chance. "I had to fight a lot with my parents to do what I'm doing. I don't like the fact that art and artistes in India are taken for granted." The contemporary dance forms aren't very prevalent either. "When we say contemporary dance forms, they are still new to India and it's difficult to find somebody to work with." As for the story of Nachiketa, she's more than happy to be exploring "death, birth, emotions; an entire journey." manpriya@tribunemail.com

A light affair
Dr Vikas Sharma Skin lightening refers to the practice of using chemical substances or procedures in an attempt to lighten the skin tone or provide an even skin complexion by lessening the concentration of melanin. Several chemicals have been shown to be effective in skin whitening, while some have proved to be toxic or have questionable safety profiles, adding to the controversy surrounding their use. Indians have an unfair obsession for a lighter, fairer skin. Products promising to lighten the face, body and armpits are available all across the country, with skin-whitening pills and diet supplements claiming to pick up where the cosmetics leave off. Last year, Indians reportedly consumed 293 tonnes of skin-whitening products, spending more money on them than on soft drinks. The skin whitening treatment can help lighten a tan, fade scars, and alleviate dark patches on the skin and is done for specific hyper-pigmented disorders. Topical skin lightening creams and lotions often contain chemical agents such as :
There is also a small amount of research showing that oral supplements of pomegranate extract , pine bark extract and ellagic acid can inhibit melanin production.Dermatological Procedures that are used for skin lightening in selective indications only include chemical peels, microdermabrasion and lasers There are a lot of skin whitening products available in the market and one should not have to rush on things and more importantly not to be deceived with promising results claimed in advertisements and commercials. Determining the cause of the hyperpigmentation is important in selecting the best approach for treatment so getting a proper diagnosis of the pigmentation disorder by a dermatologist before undergoing such skin lightening methods is of paramount importance. The causes of hyperpigmentation may include genetic, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, drugs, photosensitizing agents, ultraviolet light. In order to adequately treat the pigmentary disorder, the causative agent should be determined and managed. The treatment of hyperpigmentation with laser (light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) techniques is a fast-growing field. Word of caution All the above mentioned skin lightening agents and procedures can be harmful if not done under a supervision of specialist dermatologist so exercise caution before starting such treatments. Non-prescription creams that claim to bleach or lighten your skin can be harmful. Unfortunately, many skin-lightening creams contain illegal compounds that can damage your health, the most common compounds are high-dose steroids. Hydroquinone is a strong inhibitor of melanin production. It has been banned in some European countries because of cancer risk. Because of hydroquinone's action on the skin, it can be irritant, particularly in higher concentrations of 4 per centor greater and predictably when combined with tretinoin. Skin lightening creams can cause:

To begin with
Manish Jaiswal So, you have decided, it's time to start exercising. Exercise is a magic pill and there is no arguing that exercise can help most people lose weight, as well as look more toned and trim. Now, hitting the gym feels to be the most perpetual way of keeping yourself fit. But where do you begin? Which exercises should you do for weight loss? And how much time should you spend on the treadmill and how to avoid injuries while working out? Tip 1: Workout every day Work out every day. It's important for beginners to form an exercise habit. Doing something daily, even if it's small, helps with consistency. Tip 2: Stay Loose Whether it comes from lack of confidence or a determination to lose weight fast, beginners are particularly prone to tensing up when working out. Tip 3: treadmill trouble Working out on the treadmill is the most common workout whilst hitting the gym. As your workouts get easier, you are fooled into thinking you have become uberfit. In reality, your muscles have just grown accustomed to the challenge. Be sure to mix up your routine by varying your time and intensity and by cross-training on the bike or elliptical machine, or by going for a jog outside. Tip 4: Don't be a slouch Posture affects your mood as well as your performance. Slumping causes you to check out of your workout both mentally and physically. The less you focus during your sweat session, the less you'll receive in the way of benefits. Slouching also keeps you from breathing deeply, which is necessary for delivering the oxygen your muscles need to work at full capacity. Tip 5: Avert injuries Make sure you warm up and stretch before every workout. Most people ignore a warm-up and go straight for the weight rack either due to time constraints or out of pure laziness. Whatever the reason be, never avoid a warm up as it helps your body prepare itself for the wear and tear to come. Even a 15 minute jog on the treadmill followed by some basic stretches will suffice. First birthday post marriage is always special for a married couple and our most adorable couple, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan, is no exception. Kareena's first birthday post marriage means a lot to hubby Saif and he has planned it out of India with their gang of friends.

Sizzling chemistry
The newly released trailer of Ram Leela show a rather uninhibited Deepika Padukone making the first move towards seducing Ranveer. Not to forget the passionate lip lock, Deepika shares with her alleged beau in the movie! Though we are not sure about the number of kisses they share in the movie, the trailer gives a sneak preview of two scenes where both actors can be seen indulging in a passionate lip-lock. When asked which needed more energy to perform — smooching Ranveer or firing a gun — Deepika shot back in cavalier fashion.
"I find it very amusing that I am asked this question. As an actor whether it's a lip-lock or any other scene, each scene demands the same energy and passion. And with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, one has to give a 100 per cent in every scene," she replied. Given their rumoured off-screen status, this is one kiss that everyone will be eager to watch!
Bruna Abdullah unplugged
Bruna Abdullah is known for her small role in I Hate Luv Storys; she is a Kingfisher model and looked spectacular in the hit song Subah hone na de from Desi Boyz. Bruna had a full-fledged sexy role in Grand Masti. She talks about the movie and adapting to Indian life.
More the merrier There were six girls in the last movie I acted in. Of course, when so many heroines work together there ought to be some sense of competition. Girls always like to compete. But we never had a catfight and had tremendous fun during the shooting. Wise act I began my acting career while in Germany. I did my schooling there, but never went to college as I was busy doing a lot of theatre in Portuguese language. I was also fascinated with the idea of buying a house for my parents as I wanted to take care of them. When I heard that there were many modelling opportunities in Japan, I decided to move there to earn some quick bucks. India calling I had to go back to Germany because despite staying in Japan for three months, I couldn't make any money. I then started modelling in India. And now that films have happened, life has come a full circle. I have bought a house for my parents and can take good care of them. What more can I ask for? Bollywood has made my dream possible. Quick learner When I came to India, I did not know a single word of Hindi; now I have dubbed for my character. This is quite an achievement for me. I can now read, speak and pronounce the language on my own with the help of my Hindi tutor. I try to watch Hindi films and television programmes to understand the language better. Now that I have learnt it well, there will not be any language barrier as far as my Bollywood journey is concerned. Food fun I love eating and eat well as well as healthy everyday. I usually crave for Italian and Indian food. My mom makes the best lasagne with homemade bread. I love eating at Don Giovanni in Juhu and at the Indigo restaurants.
