Two clubs, same status, different yardsticks
Chandigarh, September 17 Delhi Golf Club pays around Rs 6 lakh per annum as the lease rent while the UT Administration has fixed Rs 1.61 crore as lease amount for Chandigarh Golf Club. Moreover, Delhi Golf Club is spread over 179 acres as compared to Chandigarh Golf Club which occupies 132 acres. The value of land where Delhi Golf Club is situated is much higher as compared to that of Chandigarh Golf Club. President of Chandigarh Golf Club GS Sandhu said they had submitted a representation to the UT Administration to reduce the lease amount. The mediator has also suggested a lease amount to the UT Administration, he said. UT Adviser KK Sharma said the lease amount of Delhi Golf Club was calculated as per the rates of year 2001 as institutional rates of 2011 of the land and development office were yet to be notified. The lease document of Delhi Golf Club mentions that the amount would be based on institutional rates. There were chances that after the revision of rates, the lease amount of Delhi Golf Club would also be in crores, which would be payable by it with effect from 2011, said the Adviser. He denied that there was any discrimination in fixing the lease amount of Chandigarh Golf Club. The earlier lease of the Chandigarh Golf Club was for 20 years (1988 to 2008) and the annual lease amount was Rs 1 lakh. The club management had urged the Administration to extend the lease either in terms of the draft lease proposed by the Administration on December 2, 2009 (Rs 10 lakh per year), or on similar terms to that of Delhi Golf Club (Rs 6 lakh annually). How it all started
The UT Administration fixed ~1.61 crore per annum as the lease amount of Chandigarh Golf Club in November 2012. The club was also asked to pay ~9.27 crore, including interest, as rent for a period between March 16, 2008, and March 15, 2013. Mediator to resolve lease row
After the enhancement of the lease amount in 2012, the management of Chandigarh Golf Club had moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court challenging the UT Administration’s decision. The High Court had appointed Justice Kuldip Singh, a former judge of the Supreme Court, as the mediator to resolve the lease row. However, there is no consensus among the Chandigarh Administration and the Golf Club on the amount proposed by the mediator. Proposal discussed
A meeting of senior UT officials was held on Tuesday in which the proposal sent by the mediator was discussed. In its proposal, mediator Justice Kuldip Singh, a former judge of the Supreme Court, had drafted a formula according to which the lease amount of the golf club was to be reduced from ~1.61 crore to ~36 lakh per annum. A senior official said they were not ready to accept the formula suggested by the mediator and would submit their reply in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. |
Glamour quotient fails to whet appetite for action
Mohali, September 17 Most of the stands were empty even as the rates of tickets were much less as compared to the Indian Premier League matches. Even the floodlit match between Sunrise Hyderabad and Kandurata Maroons failed to attract spectators. Interestingly, the stadium witnesses a sea of cricketing buffs when the same players are in action during the IPL matches. Unlike the IPL matches, the opening qualifier round of Champions League remained a low-key affair even on the glamour front. Dancers were there to entertain the crowd, but the euphoria was missing. The VIP boxes were also empty. The policemen were relieved as they did not have to manage the unruly crowd. In the first match of the day, Otago Volts beat Faisalabad Wolves by eight wickets. |
