Sporting an attitude
Mahie Gill has made slow and steady progress in Bollywood. With each step, she is learning and willing to go the distance…
A few stereotypes break and a few are formed with each step that Mahie Gill takes in Bollywood. With Dev D, she established herself as a mature actor and then landed up with Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster as well as Paan Singh Tomar. Now with an item number in Zanjeer, her phone hasn't stopped ringing with similar offers! Mahie doesn't rue it; she takes it all in her stride, at least as long as appreciation follows. "I lap up whatever would help me get better in Bollywood. I prefer to go with the flow rather than stagnate and wait for the 'right' projects," says the actor, who was in Chandigarh on Wednesday to promote Chandigarh Champions League 2 along with actor Yograj Singh. 'Right', she feels is a very subjective attribute, which changes with time, people and places, and shares what according to her is the 'right' thing to do in Bollywood.
Item list
It was always a gamble to play the part of Mona Darling in the remake of the film that was a part of cult cinema. Mahie says she did it for two reasons: "The director of the film Apoorva Lakhia is a friend and I also wanted to do an item number." The film has got bad reviews from critics, but she is happy that the item number hasn't gone unnoticed. Next is an item number in Saif Ali Khan's production Bullet Raja.
Picture perfect
Next lined up is Gangs of Ghost, which will be the first horror comedy of Bollywood. "I aim to do a range of roles. I feel disappointed at times that after playing a certain role, instead of applause people in Bollywood typecast you." On her wish-list are more comedy and action films. "Also a film based on sports. After Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, I would love to do a biopic on some sportsperson. It's a genre new to the industry with a lot of scope. Maybe a film on PT Usha would be a dream come true!
Job at hand She gives her take on the job she is here for — Chandigarh Champions League, which she hopes will give a rare opportunity to budding talent. "It's majorly through biopics of sportspersons that we get to know about their struggle and achievements. I am sure a lot of talent must have gone unnoticed. CCL2 thus becomes an important platform for cricketers who vie to play at the national level," says the actor, who shares that she was an avid footballer and hockey player during her college days. At the same time, she also supports the cause of other sports in the country. "It's strange that the accomplishments of hockey players hardly make it to the headlines. It must be heart-breaking for them and other sportpersons when their hardwork is not valued." Talking Pollywood She contributed to the superhit Carry On Jatta and before she signs another project here, she wants to be sure of the script. "Everybody is making a comedy film. That's the problem with Punjabi cinema, nobody is ready to experiment. If the industry gets one hit, the example is followed blindly." But that doesn't mean Punjabi cinema isn't faring well and she tells how, "My parents are in the US and they compel me to do more Punajbi films because NRIs love them." While she still primarily belongs to Bollywood, other actors from tinsel town, including Aarti Chabria and Minissha Lamba, are heading to Pollywood. "I have enough work in Mumbai and a project has to match up to Carry On Jatta for me to sign it." That only time will tell! ashima@tribunemail.com |

No beating about!
Music is what Indeep Bakshi enjoyed from the very beginning. A song written for a friend, who stayed at a PG, on her birthday, became a game-changer for this architect by profession.
After tasting success with Saturday Saturday, Indeep is all set to release his album with as many as ten songs. Madame Ji is the title track. "The song is dedicated to women who go to clubs; drink, make merry and lead a happy life on their own," says
Indeep. So is that all he is going to write on? "Well, I have to write what I see. I can't talk of pallus or dupattas since my listeners don't connect to that," says Indeep, who has the song 'I like you fully dressed' in his upcoming album to break the mould. "I see girls around wearing mini-skirts, drinking and smoking hookah and I sing on that. It clicks with youngsters; elders frown upon it though," he elaborates. This fan of Honey Singh believes in roaring beats and songs that talk of today. His style is eclectic, "I have given music to some of the songs in my album; some have been outsourced. It's going to be a good mix of hip-hop, RDB, slow songs and probably the first Punjabi
EDM." Life's not the same for Indeep post Saturday Saturday. "Love of the fans is valuable, but I miss being able to go out without being recognised or approached." Having done shows, right now Indeep is fully concentrating on his upcoming album. "We have a two-month promotional tour on mind." So far he has continued sailing in both the boats, being an architect and a singer. "By god's grace if I get the love of the fans for my future projects as well, I want to make music for my life!" mona@tribunemail.com

Shining bright
Jewellery designer Roopa Vohra loves her domain and she wants her designs to speak out...
For years, Roopa Vohra has been working towards reviving the old craft of handmade jewellery. In the pursuit, she has many a times designed for those who belong to the glamour industry but has never switched to their territory. She doesn't want to be referred as part-celebrity- part-jewellery-designer like her counterparts, who are socialites in their own right. Roopa is content in her own domain, happy to be known as the jewellery designer of India who revived theva and made it popular once again. She wants her designs to be seen on celebrities rather than she being spotted with them. "I am now working towards mainstreaming handmade kundan jewellery. They are popular already but stones are laser-cut, which steals the elegance of the jewellery," says Roopa, who will be in Chandigarh for her exhibition on September 13 at The Taj. This time, she is bringing to the city her Jhalak collection, the name derived from the Madhuri Dixit's appearances on the show Jhalak Dikhla Ja. "All the jewellery pieces she wore on the sets were my designs. It was the production house that approached me because they felt that my designs complimented her personality." Also a part of the collection will be samsonite jewellery, made from the African store samsonite. "Be it samsonites, emeralds or rubies, every stone is hand-cut so that their lustre is not compromised with." Each item she gets, she says, deserves to become an heirloom piece. She promises an old-world charm and regal look in all her creations. When a lot of jewellery brands are coming out with minimalistic designs, she still votes for the statement pieces. "Jewellery has to be opulent; it has to be a connotation of luxury, it can't be just a few diamonds clustered for the heck of making an ornament." The collection will boast of many colours, courtesy the precious stones. "It is designed keeping in mind the modern-day bride who swears by statement pieces and colours, who wants to wear a single piece in her neck… but that has to define her personality." So, those who envied Madhuri's jewellery on the sets of Jhalak Dikhla Ja now have a chance to have the prized possession! (On till September 14) |

Tree talk
Satish Narula Trees are an integral part of landscaping. But one has to know the right tree for the right place A landscapist is well aware about the principles of planting and placement of other landscape features. It is not that one can plant any and every tree, shrub or climber at a given space. The trees are the permanent features of the landscape. These are like concrete structures that can not be removed when once planted. It is, therefore, very important to make the right selection of species for the right location. Trees are valued for various reasons. They provide us with almost everything of daily use. However, the trees for landscape are different. These are valued either for foliage or flowers or both. There are trees with heavy foliage that are suitable for shade or fragrant flowering trees for beautification or pleasant fragrance in the day time or at night. There are trees that are either evergreen that support foliage the year round or deciduous that shed leaves in the winter or summer the time that suits a particular species for going dormant. One should be sure about the kind of species that is required for a particular spot. That is where a horticulture specialist steps in. It’s a broad subject but we can introduce you to some of the trees that are frequently used for planting. See the accompanying picture. Can you recognise this tree? The round structures visible in the photo and that look like fruits are in fact flowers. The tree grows to a height of about 20 feet or so with a matching spread. The flowers are very fragrant and have a long stay on the tree. When we talk about a tree we should also know about its negative points. When the flowering period is over, the round balls fall to the ground and rot there if not removed. We have been talking about the trees that are suitable for growing in parks or even residences where the space permits. At times, certain beliefs spread due the word of mouth. Like it happened about neem. Yes, it is a very good tree as its leaves, twigs or even bark has many a medicinal values. But who recommended it for planting as an avenue tree. The tree bears fruits that fall to ground get crushed and then spread an offensive smell. The place also becomes dirty. However, a similar thing happens when plants like pilkhan are planted. When the small round seeded pods when fall on the ground they become dangerous if these are crushed under the tyres of vehicles. Planting of trees of medicinal importance should also be avoided. The ignorant people remove parts of the trees to use these as medicines, not knowing that the trees standing by the roadside are laden with toxic emissions. (Narula is a senior PAU horticulturist) |

Get energised
High intensity interval training (HIIT) is an enhanced form of interval training with less intense recovery periods. HIIT is a form of cardiovascular exercise. Usually HIIT sessions may vary from 20-25 minutes. The short, intense workout is ideal for a busy schedule–whether to squeeze in a workout during the lunch break or to get in shape for a fast approaching event. HIIT workouts burn more calories during the day in comparison to a steady pace of run for 60 minutes.
Once this intense workout schedule is opted, the first thought may be to never do a HIIT workout again but the moment it is realised that calories burned in just 20-25 minutes session is much more than which most people burn in 60 minutes of cardio, it pushes one back to this high intensity workout session. Because these routines are so intense it is always advisable to start it slow and only use them once to twice a week. After the body starts to build up more aerobic and anaerobic endurance, start to add one more HIIT routine per week with a final goal to move up to four to five times per week. With the increased intensity comes increased wear and tear on muscles, so make sure to take time to fully recover every week. In the full 20 to 25 minutes of this routine, a person could burn between 9-13 calories a minutes. Stated below are the few workout options to be followed in this routine: Cardio Blaster
This is one of the best interval training workouts to improve fitness. It burns lots of calories in a short amount of time. Warm up for five minutes. Then run for three minutes and take three minutes active recovery which means the body is still moving but at an easy pace. Repeat the pattern four to five times. Finish with a five minute of cool down. This workout is like weight training for heart—as it strengthens cardiovascular system, which improves overall health. Sprinting
Sprinting is great for tightening and toning the legs and the core. It increases muscle power, which helps to burn even more calories. Warm up for five minutes. Run for one minute at a nearly all-out effort. Take two minutes active recovery and repeat the pattern seven to eight more times. Finish with a five minute cool down. Cardio-sprint pyramid
This adds sprint interval training for a fast and fun workout. Here, after each burst of hard work, you'll recover for the same amount of time. Warm up for five minutes. Thirty seconds sprint/30 seconds recover. One minute sprint/one minute recover. Two minutes sprint/two minutes recover. Four minutes sprint/four minutes recover. Two minutes sprint/two minutes recover. One minute sprint/one minute recover. Thirty seconds sprint/30 seconds recover. Finish with a five minute cool down. This major calorie-burning interval training plan gives the best of both —high cardio and muscle-sculpting
sprints. (Thukral is a Chandigarh-based fitness expert)

Talk to the hand
It seems critically acclaimed actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui has had enough of playing supporting roles. The 39-year-old, who will be next seen in a supporting role in The Lunchbox, tells us the reason…
I will do only lead roles. I have decided to be stubborn about this decision now. Apart from The Lunchbox, there are two other films in which I have a supporting role. These are movies which I had signed before Gangs of Wasseypur. But from now on, I will only star in lead roles. The moot point
There are many reasons for this. One is that people think that a person like me can’t do lead roles. I want to be the highest paid actor. You see in our country, actors are not paid money only stars are. Sometimes, a so-called star is paid a huge sum in spite of them not having acted in a single film before. There should be a reason why a star is being paid an obscene amount of money. You see, in our industry if there is a good actor people will say ‘Here is a good actor. Let’s give him a supporting role.’ And once you are given a supporting role, you get tagged for life. Why can’t a good actor do a lead role? What’s lacking in him? Acting bug
I am not in search of either commercial or critical acclaim. Acting is a process for me. I really don’t care if critics are applauding my performance or whether my film is collecting money. I am more interested in seeing and discovering whether I can play a particular character that has been assigned to me. An actor should focus on his acting. Hollywood junction
I will only do a Hollywood film if there is a substantial role. If it’s an itsy-bitsy role then there is no way I will accept it. There are some actors from our country who willingly take up miniscule roles just to get that Hollywood tag. I would say ‘no thanks’ to such petty roles.

High on drama
The newly launched International Institute of Film and Acting-34 promises to provide practical knowledge for all aspects of acting
How much appetite for drama do you all have? Well, the International Institute of Film and Acting-34, which was inaugurated on Wednesday, claims to hone the skills of aspiring actors by providing them with a practical knowledge of acting, singing, modelling, direction and choreography, all under one roof. The chairman of the institute, Ranjit Singh, who is also the MD of Metro Movies, a production house that has no movies to its credit so far! “I am aiming to provide all the aspiring actors with the practical knowledge of acting, which is a prerequisite for facing the camera,” he says as he stands interrupted by the principal and director of the institute, Shyam Jaitely, who claims to have over 20 years of experience in the field of acting. “Our face has 108 muscles and to give an expression, one must learn how to use them,” says Shyam, who aims at justifying the credibility of the institute with this statement when he stands questioned about how is the institute better than the other acting schools in the city. When asked as why would anyone want to opt for their institute over certified government organisations, he replies, “The institute is not affiliated to any college or university and is a private coaching centre. If you go to Mumbai to learn acting, they will charge you twice the money that we are charging here. We have the best of faculty to train students. The training fee for the course is Rs 55,000 for three months and Rs 2.5 lakh for a year. Also, the students, who excel, will be offered a role in the up and coming film of our production house, Metro Movies.” Meanwhile, Ranjit acted in a film Lal Zameen that was directed by Shyam in 1996. Never heard of it? Neither have we! Just in case if you want to try this institute out, Shyam offers a rather ‘lucrative’ offer, “We invite students to come for a two-day trial,” he says.

An endearing shadow
Divya Dutta I have been fortunate to be nominated every year for awards. This year IIFA nomination for Heroine and now Special 26 nomination for SAIFTA awards! The first ever South African and Indian awards held in Durban. My mom and brother also accompanied me to South Africa. It’s that time when you relax with your family and also meet your filmy peers! I was told a security guard would accompany me throughout my stay. I was introduced to Steven, my suited-booted security guy. It reminded me of the film Bodyguard! We decided to look up the city spots. What I found slightly odd was Steven accompanying me everywhere I went. I wanted to do my regular childlike masti but with him I had to behave normal. I tried telling him why don't you wait here, I’ll just come back and he politely refused. Well I had no choice. So, I accepted it that he was going to be with me all the time. Be it for scuba diving or shopping, he was there. Expressionless, yet alert! Then I and Rahul went for something called a micro light flight, which is like a bike in the air, with your feet hanging in the mid- air. The pilot flew us over the sea and we saw some whales. A rare sight! What a beautiful experience it was and adventurous! When we were landing, I saw him there, smiling for the first time. He uttered, “I've not seen many adventurous stars.” I got back to my hotel villa very tired. After a while I peeped out, saw him standing erect in the drizzle. I wondered when he ate, when he freshened up. I was making chai for mom and thought of making one for him too. He looked taken aback for having been offered tea. But that smile came in again. I and Rahul took the elevator and Steven followed us up by the stairs. I decided to play a prank and got off on the wrong floor! When I got back laughing, I saw him looking hyper, “I am not impressed madam, you scared me!” I felt bad for him and then decided to be a good girl. He followed me like a shadow, for my every walk, meeting people, interviews. By now, I didn’t seem to mind his presence. Then came the awards night and this time I happened to win the award for Special 26 sharing it with Rani Mukerji for Talaash. Everyone I met congratulated me! My mom was ecstatic. When we reached the hotel, he fumbled, “Madam, I am so happy. We won! I was touched by his ‘we won’ part! It was the time to leave, he waved us a goodbye…this time, no smile! Just a ‘thank you madam’! As I was buying something at the airport, I looked behind. Those five days! I was so used to him now as a shadow, his absence felt odd. And I wondered how in the most unassuming ways, on humanitarian levels, you bond with some people. It was his duty he performed but it was his dedication that I brought back home. As we landed, my brother said, “Steven sent a message that I am remembering taking care of the Dutta family. I could feel the sensitive guy behind that tough looking expressionless man and I remembered how careful he was. Before he let himself smile...just that much! I smiled. A few days, a few good people, a few good memories and that trophy in my hand…I love life! It is an experience each moment. (Dutta is a Bollywood actress) |

Hurrah for desi beat!
If you like the beats of dhol and the sound of "balle balle", get ready for this new tadka in the desi beat with Jassi Sidhu's up and coming single, Lakk Jandi Da! You could thank us later for adding another track to your list of songs that may just help you with the geris (winks)! So after Veerji and Jaan Mangdi, Jassi's new track also introduces Superwoman, whose Youtube music videos make you go ROFL! Hot and happening
Superwoman's rap in this song is like an icing on the cake and I think she looks super hot in the video too. Moreover, Jassi
Sidhu, like always, has played upon the traditional lyrics and wound them around electronica to give a pop feel to the song. I
can dance with a glass of drink on my head to this song (laughs). Karanjeet Singh, student Sounds good
This track is the kind that one can possibly listen to with our mum and dad and bhaiyas and
bhaabhis, perhaps because the lyrics are so clean. Also, the song sounds so good. I think it will appeal to the sensibilities of the international audience.
Vanshika Chabbra, student Wooing women
I anyway am fond of Punjabi songs. Not just because they make you dance at the drop of a hat, but because it celebrates the beauty of our culture and tradition in a lot many ways. For instance, in
this song, when the man praises his beloved's 'chandi da koka' and addresses to her as a
'majajan', it really makes my heart melt like a scoop of butter on a hot
parantha! Aditi Sharma, student — As told to Amarjot Kaur
