Tempers run high at MC meeting
Ambala, September 9 Not only the opposed councillors raised one issue after another, but some of the councillors of the Congress, which holds the majority in the MC house, also pointed fingers at the poor upkeep in the twin cities. Even as the councillors, both belonging to the BJP and the Congress, spoke in violent tones against the working of the DC, Mayor Ramesh Mal remained present as a spectator and did not utter many words in his defence. The meeting which lasted for more than 4 hours witnessed the Congress councillor, Dalip Chawla, adopting a stern stance against the DC, who repeatedly pleaded the councillors to maintain the decorum of the House, but failed badly. BJP’s Surinder Bindra along with Dalip Chawla had a heated exchange of words with the DC which was followed by a walkout by the BJP councillors, who returned after sometime to take up other issues with him. Chawla said, “Being the commissioner of the civic body, it was DC’s duty to ensure that it worked in the best of the interests of the local residents and that this shouldn’t have happened.” During the meeting, Chawla even accused the DC of being dictatorial in his working and stated that he would not change his attitude and would boycott the future meetings of the corporation. In the ensuing strife, the issues pertaining to sanitation, increasing the number of sweepers for the cities and other developmental issues took a back seat.

PU ‘fails’ to select soccer team
Chandigarh, September 9 Like every year, Panjab University is hosting the championship and despite confirming their entry, the team failed to turn up for their first match against Government College Hoshiarpur, here at 4 pm. According to the SAI (Sports Authority of India) appointed coach, Bhupinder Singh, the step has been taken due to non-availability of the players. Interestingly, the campus could not find 18 players as all were busy attending students election that ended on September 4. The SAI also runs an extension coaching centre scheme for the soccer players of different age group, on the PU campus. “We were short of players so we pulled back our entry from the soccer tournament. The players were busy attending general elections and that’s why no one was available to play in the tournament or to attend pre-tournament coaching camp. I am helpless, when there is no strength of players at this level,” said Bhupinder Singh. The annual A-division Football Championship for Men is the only tournament being organised by Panjab University for the soccer players of university level. The three-day tournament is also important as during this same championship, selectors from the PU sports committee shortlist team for the north zone and all-India level inter-university football tournament and with no participation, the varsity players will face a tough time to get their place in the inter-university team. On other side, president of the Panjab University Student Council denied that the campus players were stopped from playing any such tournament or attending preparation camp during election campaign. “I am not aware of the present situation. But there must be some another reason for it. For a player, his game always comes first. It seems that coach has no control over players. A soccer team needs 18 players and if the campus fails to find it from the strength of over 10,000 students, it is a serious,” said Chandan Rana. When contacted Director Sports PU, the official maintained, “This matter is being looked after by one of our Assistant Director (Rakesh Malik). You (the reporter) can contact him,” said Dr Dalwindaer Singh. But the concerned official failed to answer, even after repeated efforts. |
