2 killed in road mishap

Consumers resent direct transfer scheme
Fatehgarh Sahib, September 5 From September 1, the subsidy on LPG is being directly transferred into the bank accounts of LPG consumers in the district under the much publicised Direct Transfer Scheme of Government of India. As many as 1.8 lakh LPG consumers are covered under this scheme in the district. “I booked a gas cylinder and on delivery, the gas agency owner charged me Rs 978 and he received a subsidy of Rs 435 in his bank account,” said Subash Sood. He said the cylinder cost him for Rs 543, whereas the gas agency is providing a cylinder without subsidy for Rs 430, so they had to pay Rs 113 more. District Food Supply Controller said the issue will be taken up with the gas agencies in a meeting with Deputy Commissioner tomorrow. She said there must be some fault in the new software and the rates should be equal. |

Patiala, September 5 The students demanded an increase in the sitting capacity in the night reading room, a provision for safe drinking water, allowance on subscription of various sports and competitive journals and facility for xeroxing of all the books on the campus. The protesting students even restricted the entry of students in the library following which many students had to face inconvenience as they had to return without getting their books issued. |

Fatehgarh Sahib, September 5 The newly-elected chairman said they would be working without any prejudice and would provide funds to the panchayats for the development of villages. He said they would also hold a survey to identify houses in dilapidated condition and provide funds for the renovation of the same after receiving grants from the state government. People living below the poverty line will also be receiving job cards, so that they can get employment for minimum 100 days under the Centre-sponsored MGNREGA Scheme. “At present there are as many as 182 schools, 23 dispensaries and veterinary hospitals, under our jurisdiction. We will try to improve the functioning of the management of these institutions,” said Bhutta. He said they would also plant trees after receiving funds under the MGNREGA scheme, besides cleaning the ponds and drains in the village. |

Dowry death: Court orders framing of charges
Chandigarh: District and Sessions Judge SK Aggarwal on Thursday ordered the framing of charges under Sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and Section 498-A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the IPC against the three accused in a dowry death case. The case dates back to December 22 last year, when Leena Rani (34) died at the
PGI. Her mother, Swarn Kaur, accused her husband, Manjit (alias Mukesh) and his brother,
Neeraj, and mother, Sushil, of poisoning Leena. She said Leena was tortured for dowry. Man in police net for demanding dowry The judge also ordered the framing of charges against Harish Arora of Sector 22 under Sections 420, 376 and 506 of the IPC and Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act. A woman from Ferozepur had complained that he established a physical relationship with her on the pretext of marrying her. She said after the engagement ceremony, the accused started demanding Rs 50 lakh to marry her. — TNS |

Robbers strike at Sohana village
Mohali, September 5 One burglar, who was identified as Sonu from Jagatpura colony, was overpowered by the family members along with some neighbours. He was later handed over to the police after a sound thrash. Sonu was also admitted to General Multi Specialty Hospital, Sector 16. The other injured persons included Raju and his 16-year-old daughter, Anita. Anita was stabbed in her stomach by the burglars and was admitted to the PGI. Her condition is stated to be critical. Raju’s son, Tinku, also sustained injuries in the incident. According to the police, Raju and his family, who work as a watchman at the house of a Chandigarh police inspector, were asleep when the burglars entered their house around 3 am. “When Raju and other family members woke up, they attacked them and stabbed Anita and Raju,” said the police. A case under Sections 459 and 34 of the IPC has been registered in this connection at Sohana Police Station. |

Chandigarh, September 5 The accused has been identified as Ashok Kumar. Ashok had joined the police force as a constable in May 2010 and he was dismissed on August 30 this year when his driving license was found to be fake. According to the police, Ashok, a resident of Jhajjar district in Haryana, had submitted fake driving license of Manipur. The police officials said that the issue was thoroughly investigated by an independent agency before registering a case against the accused. — TNS |
