The astronomical rise of Electronic Dance Music (EDM) has changed the landscape of music scene in the country

It was time to get over lip synched lyrics or choreographed dances and find refuge in music that was uplifting, danceable and at times jarring. Electronic Dance Music was waiting to blast out of the consoles, grow exponentially and infiltrate popular culture. Or has it already? DJ Tiesto symbolizes the power and popularity of EDM. Sunburn is a phenomenon, courtesy EDM.

The music festival in Goa celebrates the biggest names in the genre and ranks as one of the largest in the world.

"There are as many as 8,000 to 10,000 people from Punjab and Haryana who come to attend Sunburn…While it's not possible to personally observe and count but the number plates in the parking areas say so," DJ Nawed, during one of the recent visits to the city, put the spotlight firmly on the form of music. Bollywood might have happened by chance to the remix icon but EDM is how he'd describe as the kind of music he plays and produces. "That's because EDM is very baseline driven and has strong melodies."

The genre that might have entered the Indian scenario a little late but swiftly found ground with the booming night life. "I remember playing EDM way back in 2009 at this club in the city. For close to two years, I didn't play a single Bollywood or Punjabi track. And that was the only place frequented as many as five to six times in a week by the regulars and loyalists," DJ Sameer, resident DJ, Ten Downing Street, quotes a promising picture. He adds, "It is big even in the city. On days devoted to commercial music, one odd request for an EDM track invariably comes up."

Point out to missing vocals, absence of lyrics or plain convenience on the part of the makers. Whatever you attribute the success to, you can't overlook the success. "That's not true. This genre is coming up in various forms and with vocals too. Swedish House Mafia's Don't You Worry is a shining example of that," opines Parbat Jha, bass guitarist with a Chandigarh based band, who's a regular with EDM gigs and attended the Sunburn last year on October. He adds, "Sunburn Festivals popularity is yet another instance of EDM catching up in India.

I would say, it has already hooked the true music lovers."

It wasn't long ago when DJ Kim Fai, while visiting India and rather Chandigarh for the first time, commented, "I have heard so much about Sunburn and especially from all the English DJ's." There's yet another take. “The popularity of the genre can be judged from the fact that every club in the city, at one time or the other, queues up to invite artistes from electronic dance genre," opines KK, a music industry professional.

The popularity of the genre can also be judged from the message boards and blog comments, from the DJs that rake billions through concert tickets, festivals, licensing deals, endorsements and not to forget the music sales.

Electronic Dance Music

As difficult as it might be to put it simply, but electronic dance music is any music which has electronic sounds. Some know it as house or techno and often use the genre interchangeably with dance music or club music. Talk to the purists and they might take offence! What describes EDM the best is the list of extremely well known artists in the genre.

Act wise
Actor Girish Sachdev is happy with his space on the screen. He loves to act and that is what he wants to do…
Jasmine Singh

How often do you meet artists from the television industry who have never known the word monotony? Definitely not many; after a while the rigmarole is too much to handle! Girish Sachdev is one of the few actors who loves working and has never felt repetitive. The actor, however, justifies this, "None of my shows have gone on for years together; maybe that is why I never had to face monotony."

A voice-over artist before he took to television, Girish enjoys his work thoroughly. "I wanted to play lead and I approached people for that. I think nobody was ready to take me as a lead actor," Girish adds without feeling sorry about it. Currently, with a show on Disney Star, Best Of Luck Nikki Season 3, Girish is enjoying what he likes doing - acting, a lead or not is immaterial now. What matters is how his role is sketched. "I have grown as an actor. I take up roles that give me a window to show my acting skills. Best Of Luck Nikki Season 3 is a great show. I play a fun loving father to naughty children," says Girish.

It isn't TV alone for Girish; he was also seen in Bollywood movies Dabangg 2 and Khichdi. He has a little explaining to do here. "As I mentioned before, I wanted to play the lead and later I realised that it is about acting. The canvas of films is far greater; here what matters is the role. It is the role that is the real hero," shares Girish listing his upcoming Bollywood project. "Satyagraha, which stars Amitabh Bachchan in the lead," Girish proudly claims.

The right mix
Amarjot Kaur

Languishing at the first floor of Hotel Altius, the Delhi-based DJ Gaurav appears to be complacent and unruffled when questioned about how he feels about the hoopla that is associated with the number one DJ title. "These days the new kids have come up with the concept of the so-called number one DJ, and not many of them quiet understand the music that they are doing," he says.

It is perhaps his association with some of the finest clubs in Delhi, where he served as the resident DJ that makes him care less to earn any title, "I have been a resident DJ at the Steel, Elevate, F Bar and Lounge and Agni," he shares.

Gaurav, who has been Deejaying for over 13 years now, epitomised Dj Aqeel and he has also played opening sets for various DJs, including Mobb Deep, Chamillionaire, DJ Alchemist (Emnim's official DJ), DJ Fricktion, Sasha, Jhon Digweed, Ferry Corsten. "I mix my tracks on a software called Ableton, which equips you to mix the tracks while you weave sounds and samples into them. It also allows you to shift the beats per minute," he says. "I took to this software courtesy Sasha, who introduced me to it," he adds.

stress buster
Know how to relax
Renee Singh

Making time to relax enhances the quality of life by countering all the negative effects of stress. Taking time to relax properly we release accumulated mental and physical tension thus restoring depleted energy levels. This makes you feel fresh, revitalised and better able to cope with the many pressures of modern living. Relaxation returns you to a level of well being.

Sleep is a natural healer. While sleeping your metabolism slows down and you enter a state of deep relaxation. This gives time to the body to recuperate from the physical activity of the day and it also gives your brain the chance to process the information it has gathered during the day.

The amount of sleep required by us to rejuvenate ourselves varies according to each individual but most adults require on an average seven to eight hours per night.

As we get older our requirement for sleep changes and we can do with lesser sleep. We must learn to value our sleep time and reap the benefits of mental clarity and physical vigour.

Comfort and rest

A supportive mattress and pillow can help us aid sleep. The bedroom should be well ventilated and should be neither too hot nor too cold.

Late nights

Too many late nights have a negative effect. You start having difficulty in concentrating on work. Many times you make bad decisions and become lethargic and irritable.

Overcoming lethargy

For this we need to have a regular sleep pattern. Try giving yourself a regular routine of getting up early so that we are healthily tired early enough and be sure you are in bed early.

Brisk exercise

A short routine of a brisk walk or any other form of exercise will be sufficient to help in facilitating your sleep in a better manner.

Work and leisure

A balance in work and leisure improves your chance of relaxation and getting sleep. Many times your work can be stressful and it could be involving heavy responsibilities. You can counter the negative effects of the stress generated therein by involving yourself in completely different activities over the weekend, something that you enjoy doing.

Socialise with friends

This is very important as it helps you to let your hair down and allows you to unwind completely. Having fun is extremely essential and one needs to make a conscious effort to do so. We need an awareness of the fun things of life only then can we truly enjoy and de stress.

Love life

Adhering to good sleep habits will help you discover your zest for life. A tired mind which is not rested enough can never feel joyful.

Organise home

Treat your bedroom as your sanctuary. Use it only for yourself and relaxation. Have soothing tones and colours. Instil an atmosphere of peace there.

Bathe by candlelight

Take a shower or bath an hour before you sleep. Relax and unwind by listening to music, add some aromatic oil to your tub of water and enjoy the aroma.

Go for visualization

Close your eyes and visualize that your body is relaxing more and more with each breath that you take. Allow yourself to be filled with a sense of peace.

Overcoming occasional insomnia

Don't worry about a once in a while sleeplessness. Rest comfortably in bed and allow your body to relax. Put anxious thoughts away and make a deal with yourself to handle them the next day.

Learn to unwind

Make a conscious decision to unwind from the daily stresses once you hit the bed. Sleep time is essentially a 'no worry' time. Treat it as your personal gift and allow stress to wane away as you step into the sleep zone. Wake up healthy and energetic the next day ready to take on world at your own pace.

BB creams give benefits of moisturiser, sunscreen & foundation
Manpriya Singh

Beauty balm, blemish balm, blemish base or the beauty benefit creams. BB creams; the latest creation of the cosmetic industry could justifiably be mistaken for 'Beauty Buzz'. We might have been introduced to the abbreviation only a couple of years back but the cosmetic jargon can be attributed way back to 60s.

Invented by a German dermatologist, the BB formulas first hit the market in Korea. The product was originally intended to camouflage and protect skin post cosmetic treatments. "But nowadays the beauty benefit creams are intended be a moisturiser, a sunscreen, a light foundation all rolled into one. It aims at saving time and gives light coverage," Urvashi Jhala, a skin care consultant with a city based salon, puts the original concept and today's context together. She adds, "People who are already using the product, it's convenient to use as it gives a lighter layer on the face, is a one step routine to moisturise, protect and polish the skin."

As if cleansing, toning and moisturising wasn't enough, there are sunscreens and tinted moisturisers and fairness creams to take care of. Just when we were close to piling on six layers of products before starting the day or setting out in the sun, there are BB formulas intending to save time and streamline skin care routine.

Rewind to 2011 and a couple of international brands, chiefly Clinique introduce the concept to Indian market. Only to be followed by every cosmetic company and beauty brand queuing up to share a pie of the next big market.

While some products are designed to serve as primers, that is, if the user wants intends to wear it underneath foundation, others claim to come packed with antioxidant properties. Still some others claim to combine the beauty routine with anti-ageing remedies or even assist in blemish reduction. However, warns, Neha Khanna, celebrity make-up artist with Avon, "Blemish balm creams were originally used by German associations and meant for after aesthetic treatments. They are good to use but today they appear more like a market gimmick." She adds, "I've used the original BB creams and they were actually doing good to customers. That's not the case with every BB cream available today."

Over the counter products, come with their own share of flipside.

Opines Dr Ashima Goel, of Parisa Skin Clinic, "I'm not very sure as to how affective over the counter creams are. For instance, even anti ageing creams are designed keeping in mind the ultra safety standards, the prime reason they hardly ever work. A BB cream by a medicated company used after consulting a dermatologist is likely to be much more effective."

The BB formulas have been a popular product in Japanese and Korean markets, courtesy a couple of confessions by Korean actresses and the products multi-purpose benefits. It was only a matter of time and a couple of years that the concept finally spread to Japan, China, South East Asia, USA and finally Indian shores.

Hair we go

Chandigarh-based plastic surgeon, Dr Tejinder Bhatti celebrated August as the International Hair loss Awareness month while announcing the grand opening of his hair transplant center, Darling Buds at Sukhna Lake. Many Punjabi singer actors also participated in the event.

Punjabi singers including Satwinder Bugga, Inderjit Nikku and Vinaypal Buttar made the audience dance to their songs. All the three singers have faced MPB (Male Pattern Baldness) and got their hair transplant treatment from Dr Tejinder Bhatti.

Shared Dr Bhatti, "The chances of hair fall increase by more than 30 per cent during the monsoon season in both men and women. Excessive humidity leads to sticky or frizzy hair, dullness, hair fall and dandruff." Stand up comedian, actor and writer Rana Ranbir was also present on the occasion. — TNS

Behind the scenes with Shoojit Sircar

After winning accolades from audiences and critics alike, Vicky Donor director Shoojit Sircar is back. He’s directed John Abraham and, Rockstar actress, Nargis Fakhri in his latest political thriller Madras Cafe. Here's what Shoojit has to say about the experience.

Director's hat

It was very challenging to recreate a civil war. I tried to keep it real and wanted to transport viewers to the civil war in terms of ambience.

The hype and hoopla

I think these demonstrations are a bit unfair both to filmmakers and audience. How can we decide what's right and what's wrong? We should leave it to the audience to decide whether they want to see it or not. Once the censor board has cleared it, it is not good to call for a ban. It's like hammering our democracy.

On John Abraham

There were many actors available but John was the most literate when it came to understanding the issue. I am not an industry boy. I am an outside boy. So with the support of my friends, I went to John and surprisingly, he knew about the issue. When an actor is aware of the subject, it solves a major part of the director's problem. It helps having a literate actor on board.

On Nargis Fakhri

Talking about Nargis, yes she was a little apprehensive. I told her, I am looking for a foreign journalist and she will only have to talk in English and not Hindi. I also gave her a lot of documentaries to understand how a war correspondent works. She got a hang of the role and understood that this was a serious role.

Next big thing

I have a film with Ayushmann Khurrana.I have to write a script for John Abraham and another script for Amitabh Bachchan. It's a clichéd thing to say but I am a big fan of Mr. Bachchan.

Katrina Kaif’s guest list

Private person: Katrina Kaif Katrina Kaif is getting ready for her sister Natasha's wedding. Contrary to some reports, the wedding is not happening next month but at the end of this month. And no, Katrina is not busy making arrangements for the big day.

Katrina's close friend says, "Katrina's sisters are very self-sufficient. They've all been taught by their mother to be emotionally and financially independent. So all the rumours, suggesting that the star-sister has taken over the show, is very untrue in this case. There have been reports that Katrina has been busy wedding-shopping for her sister. In fact, Katrina's mother and Natasha have made all the arrangements. The wedding is going to be a private affair attended by very close relatives and friends of the family."

Katrina, we learn from reliable sources, intends to invite a handful of her close friends from the film industry. Among those, from her very limited circle of friends in Mumbai, who are likely to attend the wedding are Katrina's rakhi brother Arjun Kapoor, filmmakers Ayan Mukerjee and Ali Abbas Zafar and Salman's sister Alvira Khan-Agnihotri.

Staying aloof: Priyal Gor Still not over it

On the occasion of Janmashtmi special episode of the show, Beta Hi Chahiye that is telecast on Big Magic, Priyal Gor decided to become modern Radha. She looked pretty in her outfit and her chirpy nature went hand in glove with the vibe of the song.

While she enjoyed her dance thoroughly, she maintained her distance from the other stars and kept to her work.

Seems like she has yet not gotten over the fact that she was replaced overnight from a certain serial in the past. Turns out Priyal's ex co-actor was also present on the set and performing with another star!

Staying aloof: Priyal Gor

Strong bond: Aashka Goradia and Faisal Khan The evidently spiteful on-screen relation that Faizal Khan and Aashka Goradia share on screen is getting quite platonic off screen. Aashka, who was dehydrated in the middle of the shoot due to the hectic schedule, was advised to take complete rest and was eventually sent back home. Aashkha's absence was greatly felt and just to express his heartfelt concern towards her faisal engraved her name on a wall. Both of them try to spend their time with each other no matter in which unit they are shooting for.
