Yuva Sandesh Yatra reaches Sirhind

Fatehgarh Sahib, August 25
The words of Swami Vivekanand that ‘India will be saved by Indians alone’ are of a great importance in the present scenario as the youth of the country has the power to eradicate all the social evils.

It is the dire need of the hour that the youths are apprised about the philosophy and the teachings of Swami Vivekanand Ji, so that they may stand up against corruption to make India corruption free, said CS Talwar IAS (Retd), while addressing a gathering at Sirhind town today as a part of 'Swami Vivekanand Yuva Sandesh Yatra’. The yatra was taken out in a procession around the town.

CS Talwar, who is heading the yatra, said, “The yatra commenced on August 15, with an aim to educate and inspire the youths to stand up against the corruption and make India free of the rising menace.”

“Three yatras have been initiated in Chandigarh, Hussani Wala and Wagha Border by the Rama Krishnan Mission Ashram, Chandigarh, and will conclude on August 31. We visit two towns, organise two meetings in colleges, address the youths and hold a public meeting on a daily basis,” said Talwar.

The main motive of the Swami Vivekananda Yuva Sandesh Yatra is to apprise the public of the teachings of Swami Vivekananda.

Induction programme on ‘Robotics’ concludes

Dera Bassi, August 25
The 5-day long induction training programme on ‘Robotics’ concluded at Sri Sukhmani Institute of Engineering and Technology, Dera Bassi. The programme was inaugurated with a view to promote the highly valuable vision of the PTU, Jalandhar, on the issue of faculty development. The programme was organised in collaboration with NITTTR (Chandigarh).

The summary of the course content and specialised lectures was presented by Prof Mukesh Verma (Coordinator and HOD- ME). The course topics, he said, were evolved through consultation with experts from NITTTR, industry experts and in-house senior fraculty members so that the existing teaching staff of the participating institutions may get direct benefit of quality education, knowledge, teaching experience, etc. He said the course would be beneficial in highlighting the changing trends and details of Robotics. — OC

3 booked for setting man’s hands on fire

Chandigarh, August 25
Wasim, a resident of Bapu Dham Colony, alleged three youths, namely, Suraj, Vicky Rajasthani and Neeraj of setting his hands on fire on August 24. Reportedly, the complainant got burn injuries and was later admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital Sector 32. A case under Sections 341, 342, 506, 384, 511, 323, 34 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 26 police station.

2 held for thrashing man

Khem Sai, a resident of Sector 37, alleged that Lovepreet Singh of Muktsar and Harminder Singh of Fazilka have beaten Rajinder Singh of Sector 37-C before hitting him with a motorcycle. The victim sustained injuries and was admitted to the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital in Sector 16. A case under Section 323, 308, 34 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 39 police station.

Eve-teasing case

Putting the police nakas on a back-foot, another case of eve-teasing have come to light when a local girl filed a complaint with the police regarding eve-teasing by some unidentified occupants of a car, number PB-65G-1786 , near Sai Baba Mandir in Sector 29 on August 24. A case under Section 354-A of the IPC has been registered at the Industrial Area police station. The search to find the accused is still on.

Drug peddler arrested

The local police has arrested Sandeep Kumar, a resident of Khuda Lahora village near the lake area of Dhanas village, for carrying 200 gm of poppy husk. He was arrested on August 24 and was book under Section 15 of the NDPS Act.

Property damaged

Satyawan, a resident of Phase-2 Ram Darbar, in his complaint to the police alleged that Santy, Deepa, Joseph, Parveen and Sandy all entered in his house and damaged the wall of his plot. A Case under Sections 384, 427, 448, 506, 511, 34 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 31 police station.

Beaten and threatened

Pappu, a resident of colony number 5, alleged that Durgesh Tiwari, Balli and Tota beat him up and threatened him, resulting in several injuries to him. A case under Sections 325, 506, 34 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 34 police station.

Car stolen

Mewa Singh, a resident of Sector 37, reported to the police that his car (PB03-Z-9808), parked in front of his residence, was stolen on August 22. The local police has registered a case under Section 379 of the IPC at the police station of Sector 39.

Man held for abetment to suicide

Mani majra: A case under Section 306 of the IPC has been registered at the Mani Majra police station on the complaint of a resident of Uttar Pradesh who alleged that Roshan Lal, a resident of Mauli Jagran, forced the complainant’s sister to commit suicide. The police has arrested the accused and investigations are on.

5 held for stabbing man

Sarvesh, a resident of Mani Majra, alleged that Kashib, Sonu, Arun, Kishan and Anda, all residents of Indira Colony, stabbed the complainant near Shivalik Park in Mani Majra on August 24. The complainant suffered from injuries and was admitted to the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital in Sector 16. A Case under Sections 147, 148, 323, 307 of the IPC has been registered at the Mani Majra police station. Later, three of the five accused were apprehended and were sent to juvenile home.

Thief caught red-handed

Ravinder Pawar, a resident of Mani Majra, alleged that Sanju, a resident of the same colony, was caught red-handed while stealing the battery of the complainant’s motorcycle. A case under Sections 379 and 411 of the IPC has been registered.

Surjit Academy lift hockey cup

Chandigarh, August 25
Surjit Hockey Academy, Jalandhar, lifted this year’s edition of the 12th ONGC SN Vohra Memorial Sub-Junior (U-14) Hockey Tournament by defeating Chandigarh Football & Hockey Academy (CFHA) in the final match held at Hockey Stadium, here today.

Both luck and hard work played a vital role in the victory of the winning team who could mange to hold its nerve till the end of the match, which was interestingly decided through the penalty shootout. The match went in to favour of Surjit Hockey Academy after it netted 5 goals to 3 via penalty shootout.

Both the teams played well through the course of the game and did not allow too many field goals against each other.

It was the winning team, which scored first goal against the home team at 6th minute. It mounted up the further pressure when it scored another goal at 28th minute and increased its lead to 2-0. The home team made a come back when it scored a goal at 41st minute against Surjit Hockey Academy. Another goal by the CFHA levelled the winning team’s lead at 57th minute and therefore, no team could net a goal against each other by the end of the schedule time.

As the match went in to the penalty shootout, it was Surjit Hockey Academy that emerged victorious.

From the winning team, Bikramjeet Singh and Navpreet Singh scored one goal each and from the losing side, Sukhjit Singh and Harnek netted the goal.

Chief guest of the final match was DC SAS Nagar, Mohali, S Tejinder Pal Singh Sidhu, who gave away the prizes.

The winning team won a cash prize of Rs 35,000 and the runners-up team was awarded with Rs 25000.

Best goal keeper was Kamalbir Singh from Surjit Hockey Academy. Best full back was Rahul from the CFHA and best half back was Sukhman Singh from the CFHA. Navpeet Singh (Surjit Hockey Academy) was declared best forward award Fair Play Trophy was given to Lucknow XI.

Princy, Priyanka, Ikshika qualify for main draw matches

In the girls’ U-12, Chandigarh Academy for Rural Tennis’ (CHART) trainees Princy and Priyanka qualified for the main draw matches without losing a game in the final round of qualifying matches for the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA)-AITA Talent Series Tournament, starting tomorrow.

The CLTA trainee, Ikshika Sangri, defeated Deepali Sharma 8-1 in the Girls U-16 final qualifying round.

In the boys’ U-12 final qualifying round, CHART trainee, Ajay Sharan, defeated Karan Prashan 8-7 (5). Another CHART trainee, Bhupender Dahiya, defeated Daksh Marwaha of the CLTA 8-5. In the clash of two CHART trainees, Naresh Badgujar proved superior. He defeated another CHART trainee Krishan Hooda 8-4.

All the main draw matches will resume tomorrow at the CLTA Complex in Sector 10 (8:30 am) and Lake Club at (9 am).

NPS-18 cagers outplay YPS team

New Public School, Sector 18, (NPS-18) defeated YPS, Mohali, 46-21 in the ongoing second Brother Kyle Basketball Tournament for Under-17 players here today at St John’s High School, Sector 26.

Sandeep with 24 points and Amit with 14 points were the highest scorer for the winning team.

In another match, St Kabir, Sector 26, defeated Sri Aurbindo, Sector 27, 54-25 points during the Brother Kyle Basketball Tournament.

Ajay 24 points and Raj 17 points were the highest-scorers for the winning team.

The home team, St John’s, Sector 26, however, lost the match to St Xavier’s School 30- 42. Kunal 19 score and Sumit 9 scores were the highest-scorers for the winning team.

Minerva Academy, MG XI to lock horns

Panchkula, August 25
Minerva Cricket Academy and MG XI stormed into the final of the first All-India Survivor Cup Cricket League 2013, by defeating their rivals in the semifinals matches played at Tau Devi Lal Cricket Stadium, here today.

Minerva Academy defeated Rohtak XI by a massive 122 runs, while MG XI beat Skyline Cricket Club by 6 wickets.

In the first semifinal match of the day, Rohtak XI won the toss, and elected to field first. But that decision backfired the team as the team openers of Minerva, Rocky Ratta and Sahib Malhotra, smashed the blowers to all parts of the ground.

Rocky made 82 of just 32 balls with 5 super sixes. Sahib Singh also contributed with 40 runs with one six.

Later Rajesh Patha scored a sparkling half century scoring 53 (not out) with 2 stunner sixes. Minerva Academy ended up with 208 for loss of five wickets in 20 overs.

In relpy, Rohtak XI started losing early wickets and was never really up for chase as a brilliant bowling performance by the Minerva Skipper, who scalped 3 wickets for just 22 runs, threw the team out of the semifinal. The skipper was supported by another bowler who took 2 wickets for 14 runs.

In the second semifinal match of the day, MG XI beat Skyline Cricket Club by 6 wickets. MG XI won the toss and fielded first. But after a 70-run opening, stand by Gaurav Puri (41) and Vishwas Bhalla (34), no other batsmen could make double figures and Skyline were bowled out for 111 in their 20 overs.

MG XI achieved the target for the loss of just 4 wickets in 16.4 overs. Ankush Dhaliwal was the top scoring batsman with 53 runs with 3 huge hits over the fence.

The final match will be held tomorrow at 1 pm.

Satluj School show the door to St John’s

Chandigarh, August 25
Satluj School, Sector 4, Panchkula, defeated St John’s High School, Sector 26, Chandigarh, by 50 runs in the first quarterfinal match of the fourth Under-14 St Joseph’s School Inter-School Cricket Tournament, played at St Joseph’s School cricket ground, here today.

Batting first, Satluj School middle order batsman Shravan made quick-fire 33 runs in just 22 balls. Another player, Hardik, also added valuable 30 runs thus team’s total reached 131 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 20 over game.

In reply, St John’s players couldn’t handle pressure and bundled out at 81 in 19 over. The fine-bowling spell by winning team’s Aryan Verma and Sahil Vashisth, who captured three and two wickets, respectively, were the star players of the match Aryan Verma. Tomorrow, St Anne’s will face St Joseph’s at 9 am and second match between Ajit Karam Singh and St Stephan’s.

Chandigarh Baptist win by 8 runs

Chandigarh, August 25
In the first GNPS Under-17 Inter-School Cup, Chandigarh Baptist defeated St Joseph’s School by 8 runs. St Joseph’s School won the toss and chose to bowl first. Chandigarh Baptist team played well and piled up 114 runs for 8 wickets in 20 overs.

Aayush with 29 run in 42 balls and Nikhil Verma 22 in 26 were the top-scorer for the team. Dheeraj and zoravar scalped 2 wickets each for St Joseph’s School.

In reply, St Joseph’s School started well but could not achieve the target. The team bundled out at 106 for 8 in 20 overs, there by losing the match by 8 runs. Ritham and Zoravar were the highest scorers for the team. — TNS

Cricket trials on Aug 28

ACB T20 cricket trials will be held at Gursagar Cricket Academy (Gurudwara Sahib Gursagar near Sukhna Lake Chandigarh) on Wednesday August 28 (12.30pm onwards).

Former Ranji player Amit Uniyal said, "ACB T20 is a an opportunity for the youngsters in the age group of 16-24. This cricket tournament will be organized at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Panchkula. In total 120 budding players will be selected from different cities. As many as eight teams and 120 players will be selected. In addition to the trophies, the winning team will be given a cash prize of Rs 15,000 per player.Runners up team will get cash prize of Rs 10,000 per player. Man-of-the-series will get Rs. 50,000. Fateh hits bull’s eye

Mohali, August 25
With 285 points, Fateh Singh won Air Rifle in Men’s category on the last day of the Ropar Rifle Shooting Championship 2013, held at Markfed Ranges, Mohali. In the Air pistol (men), Baltej topped the chart with 171 out of 200 points. 

In Air pistol, Shabaz was the winner with 174 out of 200 points and in (senior) Jaswinder emerged winner with 161 out of 200 points. In air pistol (women), Nandini topped the chart with 138 out of 200 points and in air pistol (junior women) Bhavneet Bhatia won. — TNS
