Teachers’ unions at loggerheads
Fatehgarh Sahib, August 24 The Government Aided Schools Bachao Front, Punjab, has opposed the decision of a merger, and has demanded that the government should instead lift the ban on recruitments and sanction new posts. A delegation of front led by the state president, Malkiat Singh, chairman Sandeep Sarin, general secretary Anju Kaura, have also submitted a memorandum in this regard to the DPI (S) today. “There are as many as 476 governement aided schools and majority of them are without principals and other staff. Approximately 4 Lakh students are studying in these schools. There is a need to fill up the vacant posts, which may be on contact basis, as the students are suffering without the required staff,” said Malkiat Singh. Meanwhile, the Government Aided School's Progressive Front, Punjab, has favoured the merger of the staff with the government schools only after the authorities concerned passes the order for the same in the Cabinet Assembly, keeping in mind the views of the teachers. The rising debate has been affecting the studies of the students as neither the government officials nor the Education Minister have reacted to the claims of the unions. |

Habit-forming drugs recovered
Dera Bassi, August 24 Multani issued a strong warning to the chemists and said that no one would be allowed to sell the habit forming drugs in the area. He also appealed the general public to support the authorities in their fight against the drug addiction menace. Fatehgarh Sahib: The Mandi Gobindgarh Railway police has arrested an alleged peddler from the Mandi Gobindgarh railway station. The police has also recovered as many as 3,500 intoxicant tablets and capsules from his possession. Inderjit Singh, Station house officer (SHO), Railway police station, Sirhind, said during a routine patrolling on platforms, the police chowki incharge grew suspicious about a youngster, who was moving around in a mysterious manner. “As he started searching the bag of the youth, the youth tried to flee, but was nabbed by the police team,” said the SHO. Patiala, August 24 Ubha said, “Organising such functions prove to be beneficial for students as it enhance their understanding of various concepts of the subject. First position was bagged by Manpreet Kaur and Mehak Goyal, second by Ramandeep Kaur and consolation prize was given to Hari Singh. Prof Sunil Kumar Mehta, head, department of mathematics, congratulated the winners for their outstanding performance. Woman crushed to death
Kalka, August 24 The deceased has been identified as Manjit, alias Bholi, a resident of Kurukshetra. The victim had come to Pinjore on the occasion of Rakhi. The accident reportedly took place, when a truck hit the scooter on which she was a pillion. Manjeet fell on the road and was crushed to death by the speeding truck. Her nephew who was riding the scooter also sustained injuries. The body has been sent for a post-mortem. A case has been registered. Investigations are on. |
Court accepts accused’s plea
Mohali, August 24 Giving reasons, the defence counsel of Sanbir Singh, one of the key accused in the case, stated that the marriage of his client was scheduled to be solemnised on September 13. "All the invitation cards for the marriage have been distributed and the banquet hall has also been booked for the purpose," stated the petitioner in his petition before the court, requesting to advance the hearing date for granting a regular bail, before September 13. The police had nabbed all the eight accused, Dharminder Singh Grewal, Sunil Bhanot, Rajat, Vishal Shekhawat, Onkar Singh, Sunbir Singh, Jaswinder Singh, Deepak Kaushal involved in the case. The absconding accused, Kevin Sushant from Kharar, was nabbed yesterday and has been on a two-day remand under the police custody. The accused had shot down local advocate Amanpreet Singh in their indiscriminate firing on February 27 at Phase 3-B1, here. Amanpreet’s cousin Gaganjot Singh and his friend had also sustained injuries following the fire shots. The police had registered a case under Sections 302, 307, 427, 506, 148, 149 of the IPC and 25, 27, 54, 59 of the Arms Act at Mataur Police Station. The court has set September 16 as the next hearing date. Recently, the accused had also sought a transfer of the case from the Mohali courts to Haryana, claiming that they were not getting any defence counsel to fight their case here. The next hearing date in this regard will take place on September 13. |

Vendor attacked by youths
Chandigarh, August 24 Victim identified as Sarvesh, a roadside vendor, was chased by the assailants for around 500 meters in the broad daylight. The victim in a bid to save his life entered a house, however, the assailants dragged him out and attacked him. An eyewitness stated that the victim was brutally thrashed by the accused with rods and stabbed with knife. The accused fled from the scene after the attack. The injured was rushed to the PGI and his condition is said to be critical. The attack led to panic among the residents of the area who blamed the police for not ensuring the safety of residents. The police reached the crime scene and started the investigation. The police stated that some of the assailants involved in the attack had been identified and soon arrests would be made in the case. “Old rivalry is being cited as the reason behind the attack”, the police stated. A case at the Mani Majra police station has been registered and an investigation has been initiated. |

Chargesheet filed in Sucha Singh murder case
Chandigarh, August 24 Registering a case under Sections 302, 307, 332, 333, 357, 397 and 34 of the IPC along with Sections 25,54 and 59 of the Arms Act, the police has mentioned 46 witnesses, including police officials, CFSL experts and doctors that are to be examined. It was on the intervening night of June 7 and 8 that Inspector Sucha Singh, posted with the Chandigarh Traffic Police, was on night checking along with his driver and Home Guards volunteer Jatinder Singh when they rounded up a couple, who was walking down, on suspicion at 2.15 am. Basant, who was wanted in a double murder case in Sonepat on April 18, after stabbing the inspector and the Home Guards volunteer had fled with his female accomplice Sarita after snatching their Gypsy, which they later abandoned. Basant and Sarita were later arrested by the Haryana police from Delhi. |

Chandigarh, August 24 The accident took place near a college in Sector 42, when Himanshu Kumar, a resident of Dadu Majra, was going on his cycle. Sukhwinder Kaur, who was driving the car, hit the cycle. Two held for theft
Zirakpur, August 24 The accused has been identified as Pawan Kumar, a resident of Gurana, district Hissar in Haryana. Pawan was presently residing in Golden Enclave, Zirakpur. During the investigation, five stolen motorcycles, one air-pistol and a knife was also recovered from his custody. The accused allegedly confessed of his involvement in more such criminal activities. “He has admitted that he along with his gang members used to give threatening calls to victims and demand money from them,” said a police official. A case has been registered against the accused under Sections 392, 384, 506 and 34 of the IPC. Meanwhile, Dera Bassi police has also arrested a miscreant and has recovered stolen materials from his possession. The accused has been identified as Sonu, a resident of Tohana, district Fatehabad in Haryana. |

2 booked for defacing public property
Chandigarh, August 24 A day after a student leader of SGGS College was booked for defacing public property, two more student leaders has been booked by the police for pasting posters on public places. A case under the Defacement of Property West Bengal Act, 1976, has been registered against NSUI leader Vijay Rikhi, whose posters were pasted on a signboard near Sector 14/15-24/25 roundabout. Another NSUI leader Hardeep Singh Pannu was booked for pasting posters in Sector 15 booth market. Both the cases have been registered at the Sector 11 police station and investigation has been initiated. |

City, Jalandhar academies in final
Chandigarh, August 24 The CFHA players came out victorious 6-4 in the semifinal encounter with Haryana Hockey XI. CFHA registered an early lead in the match when Daljit and Sukhjit netted a goal each in the eight and ninth minutes of the match. The opponents made a come back in the 25th minute when Rahul scored a goal. The local team, however, enhanced the lead in the 30th minute. Sunny brought the Haryana team back in the fray by netting a goal in the 34th minute. However, three back-to-back goals by CFHA in the 36th, 46th and 47th minutes the local team an unassailable lead at 6-2. Haryana Hockey XI players did score two quick goals in the 55th and 66th minutes of the match to narrow down the lead to 6-4, but it was too late for the visiting team. The winning team strengthened its defences after the 66th minute, which led to the victory for the home team. In the second semifinal encounter, Surjit Hockey Academy, Jalandhar, thrashed Lucknow XI (UP) 6-1. Bikramjit was the star player as he scored three goals in the 37th, 54th and 56th minutes for the winning side. Arun scored the lone goal for the losing side. The final match will be held at 4 pm tomorrow. |

Chandigarh, August 24 The home team easily defeated Sri Aurbindo School, Sector 27, in the inaugural match. The scoreboard read 51-31 at the end. Dev scored 24 points, while Nishant managed to score nine. A total of eight teams are participating in the tournament. The pool A has four teams, including New Public School, Sector 18; DAV School, Sector 8; Moti Ram Arya School, Sector 27; and YPS, Mohali. The pool B has teams including St John’s High School, Sector 26; Sri Aurbindo School, Sector 27; St Xavier’s School, Sector 44; and St Kabir School, Sector 26. In another match, New Public School, Sector 18, beat DAV Public School, Sector 8, 72-44. The highest scorer for the winning team was Amit who caged 28 points. Sandeep scored 18 points for the team. For the losing side, Danish scored 26 points and Chinmay ended with eight points. Chandigarh, August 24 Batting first, Chandigarh Baptist XI scored 117 runs for the loss of four wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Nikhil (37) was the main scorer for the team. Saupin’s XI despite losing the star opener Prabhjeet Singh in the first over romped home in the pre-quarterfinal tie. Chandigarh Baptist bowlers looked helpless as Gauravdeep and Atul hit all around the ground. Gauravdeep scored seven boundaries in 57-run knock, while Atul sent the ball six times to the boundary line in his 43-run innings. Tennis tournament from tomorrow
Chandigarh, August 24 The qualifying matches for all the categories were played today at the CLTA Stadium and Lake Sports Complex. In the second qualifying round in the boys’ under-12 category Onkar Apte and Divesh Galhot registered 8-0 victory in their respective ties against Yuvraj Toor and Tarun Phogat. Aryan Nighawan and Sashikant too beat Divank Sharma and Abhishek Antil respectively 8-0. In other ties, Vanshdeep Singh beat Abeer Saharan 8-3, Avik Chaudhary beat Gurjosh Singh 8-1, Kunal Patial beat Siddharth Nighawan 8-7, Mahishmat Kumar beat Karan Sandiliya 8-2 and Vikram Aditya beat Samarth Suri 8-3. |

DAV School, Sector 8, had made it to the final after defeating Vivek High School, Sector 38. N Milan Soni of DAV School won the best scorer award with a total of six goals to his credit.
