In most fruits usually it is the flower’s ovary that gets swollen and develops into the edible portion. In a few fruits like apple and pears, the receptacle of the flower turns into the edible part. But there exists a fruit in India in which the sepals, the outermost part of the fruit gets swollen turning into the edible part. This fruit, called chalta (Dillenia indica), grows wild in forests and grows in the foothills of eastern Himalayas. Chalta fruits taste sweet and sour and are also used in Orriya and Andhra cuisine.
