The first person to reproduce true to true type plants of fruit trees was Feng Li, a Chinese diplomat, who lived 7,000 years ago. He experimented with various techniques to produce true-to-type plants as the plants he had been obtaining from the seed of his best quality fruits did not bear the same-quality fruits. He invented grafting in which a piece from a good quality, fruit-bearing tree was surgically joined with another tree and allowed to develop into an independent tree. He did it on peaches, almonds, persimmons, pears and apple. He was also the first in the world to start a commercial fruit nursery.
