Bride and bling
The India Bridal Fashion Week, which broke a few conventional trends to make way for some revolutionary ideas, proved that Indian fashionistas are ready for experiments
Ashima Batish

The Indian couture stands redefined, revamped for good. Bling might be a part of it still but it's not the entirety of this segment of fashion any more. It's dominated by colours that are just short of blinding but there is space for pastels, off-whites and even black. Fusion creations have been added to the long existing list of lehengas, sarees and anarkalis. And equal importance is given to men's couture as well. When was the couture of India so experimental, so innovative! The recently concluded India Bridal Fashion Week further proved to be a fashion churner, which helped to do away with few conventional trends and establish a few path breaking ones. Here is a list of what evolved at the fashion week.

Ashima Leena’s kurti blouse Blouse basics…

Fashion's obsession with cleavage got a break as designers introduced bustier blouses and kurtis. Rina Dhaka's mirror work bustier with an extended panel was a new discovery. Even Nihkil Shantanu's asymmetric choli with a yoke didn't conform to the size of a choli. Done with a collar and stretching till the navel, it made the dupatta redundant. Shane and Falguni Peacock's creation of kalidar saree had an was a fitted jacket that had panels running further down. A full sleeve jacket kurti blouse by Ashima Leena was also an interesting interpretation.

Raghavendra Rathore’s creation Taking men forward

A fashion week in India dedicated to men hints at the potential of the largely untapped market. So, almost every designer at the fashion week attempted something different that would give men a break from the perennial three piece suit and sherwanis. Known for bandhgalas, Raghavendra Rathore took the path less trodden by picking up colours that were never meant for men-bright red and neon pink. The double-breasted red coat with fitted trouser of the same colour indicated that metrosexual men were ready to experiment with their looks. If Rathore paid attention to the modern Indian man, who wasn't in favour of an elaborate couture, JJ Valaya presented a different picture as Kabir Bedi walked the ramp in a long, velvet sherwani with intricate gold work. Rohit Bal's angarakhaa-line sherwani was something never attempted before by a fashion designer.

Colour therapy

Tarun Tahiliani’s design Reds, oranges and pinks once again dominated the ensembles but they indeed had more to offer. If Tarun Tahiliani's orange lehanga looked splendid, his off-white, beige shimmery piece was no less alluring. Off-white and beige were rather the colour found in most of the collections. Be it Suneet Varma's gowns or Ashima Leena's dhoti saree, the dull shade was the common factor. Pastels were the colour palette of Meera Muzaffar Ali's collection. And once again, black found a place in a the couture collection. A gown by Adarsh Gill with a long jacket proved the same.

For the cause of fusion

Rohit Bal’s gown with jacketIndian fashion designers boast of recreating anarkalis as the Indian version of western gowns. Nearly all designers incorporated gowns or anarkali gowns, as they prefer to call it, in their collections. Rohit Bal even added a high collar to it, the ones that were a part of the Victorian era. The deep red was contrasted with an off-white jacket embellished with beautiful intricate Kashmiri embroidery. Raghavendra Rathore added a fitted lace jacket to a gown, which was apt for a cocktail party. Roman architecture- inspired collection by Suneet Varma included gowns that were off-shoulder. Though they weren't a clone of anarkali (they were not kalidar), the presence of a duppatta hanging suggested they were an astute replacement. Metal corsets and belts were the only elements of embellishment.

Trend-o-meter

  • Kalidaar sari, a fusion of sari and anarkali suit by Shane and Falguni Peacock
  • Digital printed sarees for couture, we thought they were always prêt.
  • Kalidaar sharara by Adarsh Gill to contain volume and make it a practical wear.
  • Fabric was given its due. It wasn't just randomly covered by embellishments. Shantanu and Nikhil made couture pieces only with fabric.
  • l Traditional embroideries, Kashmiri and paisleys will always be in vogue as proved Rohit Bal and JJ Valaya's collections.

Wedding & wisecracks
Akash Chopra & Tahira Kochhar, the lead actors of Rabba Main Kya Karoon, talk about the funny side of a serious business called wedding!
Amarjot Kaur

While there is still a little more time for the wedding season, the up-and-coming Bollywood romantic comedy film, Rabba Main Kya Karoon is all set to take you off on a roller coaster ride of laughter and drama.

In Chandigarh to promote their film, the lead actors, Akash Chopra and Tahira Kochhar, wax eloquent about the film and their roles as they engage in an interesting banter that translates into an expression of their journey through the film. "Interestingly, the title of the film was initially slated to be Rabba Mai Ki Kara, but since it is a Hindi film, we changed it to Rabba Main Kya Karoon," begins Akash Chopra, who will debut in the film along with Tahira Kochhar, who is a newbie in the film industry.

Laughter ride

"This film revolves around the life of a Delhi based to-be married childhood sweethearts Sahil and Sneha. In any marriage, there's always one such relative who claims to know it all and is always up with a bag full of advice. In this film, Arshad Warsi, who essays the role of my maternal uncle, throws some of the most twisted ideas my way," begins Akash while adding, "This is an out and out comedy film that rolls on hilarious situations. Also, it speaks volumes about valuing relations." The film is a directorial venture by Amrit Sagar (Akash's elder brother), who is known to have given acclaimed films to the industry, including 1971 and Aankhein. Akash explains the shift towards comedy. "Even Ramanand Sagar, our grandfather, thrived on the idea of innovation when he came up with the famous television series Ramayan. Amrit wanted to experiment too," he shares.

First take

Since both Tahira and Akash are making a debut in the film, Rabba Main Kya Karoon, they are as excited about its release as they are about their careers in Bollywood. "I was modelling for over three years and in 2010 as Amrit was looking for the female lead, he had auditioned as may as 398 girls. During that time, I was participating in the Femina Miss India and I was offered the role of Sneha when I won the title. Though I was a little apprehensive about taking up an acting career, it was Amrit's conviction that pulled me through." Tahira admits that she is a Bollywoood buff and that she always wanted to become an actor. The major challenge for both the debutants, however, was to make their mark while performing with the veterans of the industry, "The only challenge was to act without acting. We had clear-cut directions from Amrit that we should remain natural and just react to the situation," says Akash.

The film will release on August 2.

Jack of many trades

Besides acting in the film, Akash has also given the background score for the film and has composed the music too. "I have sung the song called Dua, which is essentially a rock ballad. Initially, we were planning to buy the rights of a Pakistani song, but we could not have included that in our album. It was then when we decided to create our own song and Amrit asked me to sing it," he shares.

Director producer Shoojit Sircar, who is ready with Madras Café, believes in making films that are content driven

How did Madras Café happen?

I was working on this script much before Vicky Donor. We were working under the tentative title Jafana. Once we moved over Vicky Donor, we were on with Madras Café.

John Abraham, Nargis Fakri, Siddharth Basu, Piyush Pande-you have an interesting cast.

Casting is an important aspect of my films. John and Nargis both fit the roles pretty well. John plays a straightforward intelligence guy, Nargis is a war correspondent. It's not an action film but lots of mind game, a political thriller I will call it. John and Nargis will surprise you!

How challenging was the film?

Making a film on a sensitive issue, I tried not taking sides. The story is told by an intelligence officer's point of view, what he sees, experiences and finds. The most challenging was to create the civil war milieu since we shot the film in India.

Vicky Donor was a smashing success, what do you feel about it today?

I was pleasantly surprised that people lapped up the rather taboo subject. I didn't expect everyone to see it, but they are still talking about it and that makes me happy.

Chandigarh's Dolly Ahluwalia Tewari and Ayushman Khurana have been associated with you, your take on them.

I have been working with Dolly Ji from my very
first film Yahaan. She is a dear friend and we share a great rapport. In fact, she makes the whole unit happy. The crew loves her. Ayushman is still young and new, but he is an effortless actor. We will do more films together.

Who inspire you?

I have a theatre background. In fact, I am still associated with the group Act 1. Satyajit Ray and Hollywood inspires me. I want to make lots of films, mostly content driven!

The lag of the club
Jesse Grewal

Of the three main reasons for the club coming shallow, the lag is the hardest part as it is linked to both timing as well as technique. The other two, the position of the body at impact and the plane are more technical and not timing related. When a golfer starts their downswing the club shaft retains or may increase the angle between the left arm and the shaft (for right handed golfers) which was at the top of the backswing. During the backswing the wrist action creates an angle of 90 degrees or more between the shaft and the left arm. If this is retained in the initial part of the downswing it is called a ‘lag’ and if the right arm begins to throw the club out and lose this angle it is termed as ‘casting’. The correct sequence of a ‘lag’ would be in pictures 1, 2 &3.

When the club casts out as in picture 4 we end up with a mistimed shot as well as a loss of distance. At impact the club head passes the hands causing the club to catch the ball on the upswing (picture 5). This increases the loft on the club head and therefore makes the ball fly higher and go shorter. As the club casts out before impact it approaches the ball on a shallow path and can lead to ‘duffed’ shots. Most golfers refer to this as having used ‘force’.

The two basic principles of the golf swing are using centrifugal force created by the rotation of the body and gravity’s action on the arms. The arms drop naturally to the ball with gravity if they are loose. This dropping action combined with the turning of the body creates a lag. When the arms try and hit from the top of the backswing they cast the club leading to a poor impact and a resulting bad shot.

To create lag, work on both the rotation of the body and the dropping action of the arms. Keep tension out of the arms and focus on ‘swinging’ the club and not ‘hitting’ the ball. Improving the ‘pulling’ action of the lead arm also helps in creating lag. Hit some balls with the left arm only. Tee up the ball to make this a little easier.

Branded pugs
Poonam Bindra

A mother and son named Coco and Polo have made the Dhanda’s residence their abode since many years and have become so much a part of the family that they even sleep between Ajay and Anita Dhanda.

“I call them a ‘kebab main haddi,” says Anita on a funny note. This pair has taken their names from the brands and Coco is the senior ‘lady’ of seven while Polo is the young naughty ‘boy’ of four.

However we are told that like all the members of the female species, Coco is more active and agile than Polo. Very choosy about their food, they will eat only if there is chicken, paneer or egg.

“We tried to keep these brats hungry for some time so that they would take some dal  roti  but it had no effect so eventually we had to give in,” informs Ajay who performs the  duty of taking them for their morning and evening strolls which they love. Even car rides are really enjoyed by them and they love going for shopping.

“You just have to say the word ‘chalo’ and they are ready with their leashes,” he says.

Generally friendly Coco and Polo are good guards for they start barking even if somebody touches their gate or any car stands close to it. Never being shy of taking a bath, they relish doggy biscuits and chew sticks. They love the outdoors so much that they try to crawl under he gate and run on the road so the Dhandas have to be careful with them.

Fun loving as most pugs and with their big expressive eyes and upturned nose, they sure make a pretty picture with the family.

it’s rocking
Exotic sound, familiar face

The Indian summer just got hotter with Priyanka Chopra’s brand new track, Exotic. The song also features Cuban-American rapper Pitbull and has been written by Armando C Perez. Now, the credit points for the song are that it has already got the number one score on i-tunes. Here’s what the city folks have to say about the song.

Hot and sizzling

I quite like the song and Priyanka is looking really hot. This is perhaps the first time that an Indian singer has collaborated with Pitbull, who is an influential name in the international music circuit. Way to go PC!

Simrit Dhillon, student

Beyond boundaries

Oh, I love the music and the lyrics too. Also, the Hindi part in the song is amazing. I love the song and it’s purely because of PC, her voice, her sense of music. Let’s give it to her, she has made it quite big when it comes to taking India and its music on the international scale.

Simran Sandhu, student

Hard-hitting

I am very fond of PC as it is and this song Exotic, defines her. I like the music of the song and also the lyrics. It’s a party song and I already hear it in the clubs and everywhere. It’s certainly a hit!

How do I know if I have Alzheimer’s? I think I do. I forget a lot.

Kavita, Chandigarh

There are some warning signs of Alzheimers. One of the most common signs of Alzheimer's is memory loss, especially forgetting recently learned information. Others include forgetting important dates or events; asking for the same information over and over; increasingly needing to rely on memory aids. However, occasionally forgetting names or misplacing things is normal.

Some people may have trouble following a familiar recipe or keeping track of monthly bills. People with Alzheimer's can lose track of dates, seasons and the passage of time. However, occasionally not recalling the day of the week but remembering it later is normal.

Some people have problems finding the right word or call things by the wrong name but sometimes having trouble finding the right word is common.

Basically you can prevent Alzheimer by being more active. Studies suggest that exercising your brain by taking part in activities such as reading, writing, and playing with puzzles, from childhood through old age, is important for brain health in old age.

For six years prior to their deaths, 294 people took cognitive tests, which examined their memory and clear thinking. The subjects also recounted how frequently they exercised their brains by reading a newspaper or book; writing a letter; playing a thinking game like chess or Sudoku; or visiting a museum or theater. Subjects who read, wrote and played puzzles experienced fewer cognitive problems; what's even more interesting is that mental activities stave off the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Even if their brains displayed plaques, tangles, and lesions, people who exercised their brains did not exhibit behaviors of Alzheimer's.

So read more, do more puzzles, exercise, learn new activities and you may be okay. Meet a neurologist or a psychiatrist to rule out Alzheimer if you feel you have it but usually people who fear they have Alzheimer, they do not.

How do I avoid procrastination- I find it difficult to finish things.

Vishal, Chandigarh

Some people are born procrastinators. They have low self-control, are easily distracted. However, start by identifying what you need to change. Then identify what you want to change in the next three months. Avoid trying to change everything, like exercising if you don’t, sleeping early and waking up early if you can’t and changing procrastination. If you have had these habits for years, start by working on one. Standard advice is to put yourself in the right environment, i.e. one that reinforces work and avoids temptation. A favourite for writers is to pull out the internet cable from the back of the computer and hide it at the furthest reaches of your house.

Vinay Pathak had a whale of a time doing the comedy film, Bajatey Raho. He shares his experiences

comic timing: How was it working for Bajatey Raho?

I had a blast working for Bajatey Raho. It was my first time working with both Ravi Kissen and Tusshar Kapoor. Ranvir, Shashant and I have worked many times before so we were in our own comfort zone. The film was completed in no time and it was a smooth ride throughout.

Do you think that you do only smart comedies?

It is just that most other scripts that come my way do not excite me as much. I have to make sure I enjoy my job and in order to do that I have to make good choices. It is unfair to say I do only smart comedies. If you see my films, I play a different character in each and every one of them. They are all poles apart. You need to understand the equity of a film as an actor.

Why did you stop doing television?

I deliberately stopped doing television because I wanted to concentrate on my film career. Pooja Bhatt had offered me a great role in Jism and I couldn’t help but take it up. I only do films that entice me. This has helped me over the years and now I have people writing roles specifically for me. So yes, I am happy I stopped doing television.

What do you have to say about Bajatey Raho?

We have made a good clean film where we do the right thing in the wrong way. We hope the audience watch this funny and crazy film of ours and leave the theatre with a smile on the face .

Tanu to wed Manu again?

R Madhavan and Kangana Ranaut The hit jodi of Tanu Weds Manu team up for the sequel of the 2011 blockbuster film directed by Aanand L Rai.

Earlier, the makers decided to cast Imran Khan and Anushka Sharma instead of the original star cast but later they had a change of mind and finally signed the original pair R Madhavan and Kangana Ranaut. The pair of the two considered to be an odd couple but their chemistry sparked magic.

Tanu Weds Manu is a love story of a simple NRI boy and an UP girl Kangana who does not believe in arranged marriage. She wants to marry Jimmy Shergill but later falls for Madhavan’s charm. Aanand L Rai is working on the sequel and the film is likely to go on floor early next year.

“There is a sequel, it’s in the system...the plan is still on. I don't know when it will go on floors. If it’s happening it will happen with same star cast — Madhavan and Kangana will go ahead with the franchise. The film is incomplete without them," Rai said.

Aanand’s latest movie Raanjhanaa that has Sonam Kapoor and Dhanush in the lead rocked at the box-office and he said that he has no plans to make a sequel out of it. "For me the film is over. I don't think I can make a sequel to it now... whatever we wanted to tell we have told it all," he said.

The director is busy with his next project but he refuses to divulge any details.

Prateik kisses Evelyn

A scene from Issaq Evelyn Sharma has been kissed! It so happens that Prateik Babbar had fallen head-over-heels for the sparkling gal and planted a hot one on her lips, much before he consolidated his love for his lifetime companion.

Now now! Before you jump to conclusion, let us tell you that this is the way Evelyn's role unfolds in the new Prateik starrer Issaq.

But more than her first on-screen kiss, Evelyn is a tad concerned about how she will look or be evaluated for her overall performance. "Issaq was the first movie I shot for. Since then I've honed my acting skills many times," she remarks.

"The actress in me evolved as I acted in films like Nautanki Saala and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani," says Evelyn and adds that she's a bit nervous about how people will judge her in Issaq.

But considering her career has been on a constant upswing, we don't think the gal as anything to worry about. Year 2013 is turning out to be quite a roller-coaster ride for the newbie.

The art of eating

Healthy choice: Kareena Kapoor Khan, Karishma Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan are coming together for the first time for the film on nutrition called The Indian Food Wisdom and The Art of Eating Right. It’s directed by Rujuta Diwekar. It is an attempt to revive the lost art of ‘oral wisdom’ by watching it, imbibing it and spreading the word. Richa Chadda and Anupam Kher are also the part of this Film.

Rujuta Diwekar's says, “I am super excited that Kareena, Karishma and Saif are all a part of this film. It’s a casting coup of sorts! But what is more important is that we are all sharing our common belief that eating right, eating local, seasonal, fresh and tasty food is integral to looking good, feeling light and happy. And like Saif often says — happy people are most attractive, not skinny
