Time to set
SALE
While the summer season is on the brink of fading away even as the monsoon has made an early entry into the region this year, several apparel brands and malls in Chandigarh have already started exploring profit-making avenues through alluring marketing strategies. One such strategy is the 'sale', which for long has been attracting buyers. Most of us enjoy investing our money in products that are on sale, but there are ways in which you can play it smart while bagging the best deals.
Percentage problem
Often, there is confusion with the word 'upto'. "While I was shopping in the City Mall, I came across various advertisement posters that claimed a 70 per cent off on the products, but when you enter the store there's only 30-45 per cent off. Sometimes, there is no discount on certain products at all. It's harrowing to drive all the way and feel like a fool," says Svati Saggi, who is pursuing her internship at the BRS Dental College. Her concern finds an echo with several other buyers. So how do you pull a smart one on this strategy? Here is how, "Under the Consumer Protection Act 1986, in case of deceptive advertisements, you can always ask the store manager to lay out the merchandise that has the promised percentage off. Demanding for your right always helps," says Dheeraj Sharma, Chairperson, IIM, Ahemdabad.
Short time
How many of you have gone shopping when there is a sale for just one day? "I love shopping during the sales, perhaps I end up spending more than I usually do while the sales season is on, but this time, I went to an apparel store that claimed a certain percentage of discounts on the products. I was not carrying enough cash that day, so I thought that I return the next day and pick some clothes. However, when I returned the next day, the sale was not there," says Prakash Tully, a Chandigarh resident. "Now the major concern when it comes to shopping is that some stores apply VAT charges and then there you cannot exchange the garments that you have bought. Sales are not genuine these days. However, there are only a few stores that accommodate the customer by exchanging the clothes and putting up sales on the fresh stock while most of the others are eyewash in the name of sales," says Ritu Sehgal, another resident.
Stale stuff
"Many shops in Sector 17, especially the shoe shops, quote discounts on products, which look like as if they have been purchased from the rehri market. These days the quality of products that are on discount is all right. For instance, I went to Zara and ended up getting some good products at a discount of 50 per cent. When it comes to shopping during the sales, your luck is put to the real test," says Ruby Takhar, a city resident. "I like shopping, but for me convenience is the major issue so I follow brands and keep a tab on their sales. If you are not shopping at branded stores, you are likely to have problems finding your size or get the old collection," says Amol Goel, a city-based brand consultant.

Brush with memory
The Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi has recently honoured eminent artist Jodh Singh. We catch up with the man who has contributed much to the cause of visual art in the region... Amarjot Kaur Even as you arrive at the threshold of Jodh Singh's residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh, you get a warm welcome from the artist sitting on a chair at the porch: "Hope you didn't find it difficult to locate the house." One understands his radical disposition as he begins to wax eloquent about his passion for art. The Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi has recently honoured Jodh Singh for his contributions to the field of art. "I was born in East Africa and I reckon that I took to art because of my mother. Every time she sat down to weave mosaics with her 'tuktuki' machine on fabrics, I would look at her in utter awe. So even as a child, I started seeking refuge in art every time I was filled with despair or was just sad. Slowly, this practice graduated to become my passion and I started studying fine arts under the scholarship of Rs 25 per month," he says. After graduating from Punjab School of Art, Shimla, in 1964, Jodh Singh took to teaching. He shares that although he wanted to go to France after teaching for a while, he actually took a liking to the profession. He served at the Government College of Girls (GCG), Sector 11, as the head of the department of fine arts till 1996. "I think patience and perseverance comes naturally to any artist; during my service at the college I discovered these qualities, which went on to define my perspective of art." About art, he says, "I think competition is very important when it comes to art. In 1964, when I requested MS Randhawa, the first administrator of the city, to become the chief patron of my initiative, the Young Punjab's Arts Society, he admonished my concern on the pretext of using grammatically incorrect English in the epistle that I forwarded to him. However, over the years, he supported the cause and we organised several exhibitions. Now, All-India Arts and Crafts Society has also started making its presence felt in Punjab and the healthy competition between the two organisations would always keep us on our toes. That's how art flourishes." Since 1964, Jodh Singh has contributed to art in different forms, including realistic paintings, watercolour landscapes, still-life paintings, mural designs and charcoal sketches. He was elected as the member of the National Lalit Kala Akademi and was the president of the Punjab Lalit Kala Akademi. "At this point in my life where I stand between the obligations towards society and my family, I feel content with the recognition I have received for my contribution to the field of art." Among many of his contributions to the state, Jodh Singh designed the trophies of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab State Award (that rests in the humble abode of Milkha Singh), Silver Jubilee Women National Hockey Championship and Punjab Film Award for Natya Singh. He also executed the cloth mural (17x7 yards) that depicted India's struggle for independence from 1857 to 1947. As Jodh Singh's wife takes you around the gallery on the first floor of his home, he drowns himself in the memories of the past that form the contents of an old photo album in his hand. And back he goes to the point where it all started. |
Making some wise choices
Randeep Hooda's career has got a new lease of life and he is going places, from strength to strength and to bigger production houses. He talks about the changes in his life, his attitude, and more. Upswing mode
My life has been a roller-coaster ride and I have been doing a significant amount of work in the last couple of years. It feels great to be successful in films and to know that people want to associate with me. I feel there is a higher power conspiring for my success. I have also changed me attitude and have become more polite and professional because people's opinion of you counts a lot in Bollywood. Career over relationship
I had to give up my relationship for my professional success. It was a sacrifice for a bigger goal. I know I will be in another relationship sometime later. Right now, I am just focused on my sets, characters, and make-up for the movies I am part of. I want to take my career seriously. Future plans
I am going to buy a house soon because I need that security. I have been living in a rented house all this while. My happiness has been in taking care of my horses and that is an expensive passion. I don't care much for fancy clothes and shoes and such. I have done many films for free in the past but now I hope I charge a proper fee. Another biopic
I have just started shooting for the biopic on Charles Sobharj with director Pravaal Raman. The world of Bollywood is waking up to biopics but I have already done D, Rang Rasiya, Risk and now Dead. I am proud of that. Brooding avatar
I have done too many roles and movies in which my character has undergone emotional turmoil. These roles start affecting my life also and that is not good. Sajid Nadiadwala's next movie has come as a boon as none of my relatives have died in it (laughs). I know my strength lies in intense roles but I want to relax for a while.

Nothing exotic
Priyanka Chopra’s latest single with Pittbull, Exotic, might be number one song on Indian lists, but the song has failed to make its appearance on US charts of top songs.
Her first single In My City had also failed to make a mark despite the association with Will.i.am. Priyanka took tips for her second album from Jenifer Lopez’s career. JLo had also once included Will.i.am in her album but the album failed to click. Then she took help from rapper Pittbull and her album grossed in top albums of the US. However, as her single titled Exotic has hit the stands, Priyanka has come in for criticism for copying the looks of other famous pop stars before her. The audience loves her singing, but as far as looks go, Priyanka is distinctly aping the styles of Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and Katy Perry. In 2004, Britney Spears shocked and fascinated the world with her rather risqué ensemble in her hit Toxic’s music video. Her nude coloured sequined dress became an icon in the world of pop music. The style was later improved and followed by Jennifer Lopez and Katy Perry. In Exotic, Priyanka too appears in a nude coloured dress that hugs her fantastic body in all the right places while strategically placed crystals enhanced the appeal of the dress. This is a distinct copy of the dress that was worn by Jennifer Lopez at a music awards show in 2011. We know that Bollywood loves to copy Hollywood, but this is the first time that an acclaimed Bollywood actress has branched out to the international music industry. So, a lot of expectations were riding on the actress turned singer and the fans are not disappointed. Nonetheless, we expected some originality from Priyanka when it came to dressing instead of blatantly copying the looks of the former pop stars.

Perfect shot
Prakash Jha is known to be a perfectionist when he is calling the shots as a director.
Recently during the shoot of his forthcoming movie Satyagraha, the acclaimed director used the water cannon on his own cast members, including the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal. A source from the unit says, "It was an agitation scene where the cast was taking on the authority. In any real life angry protests, the situation is tried to be controlled by the authority concerned by using the water cannon. Prakash Jha wanted to replicate the scene and make it look convincing." "He himself wielded the water cannon on his own cast who were sporting and dedicated enough to withstand the huge water pressure coming out of their director's cannon. This scene is one of the most realistic scenes in the movie that will remind anyone of an actual protest rally. Only Prakash Jha could make this scene so realistic," the source adds. The film's plot is said to revolve around the uprising middle class against a corrupt and unjust system. This leads to a big movement that challenges the system. In this political thriller, Amitabh Bachchan plays the role of a new Gandhi. His character is of a man who is a firm believer of truth. There are different aspects of politics, ideologies, clashes and threats brought into this film. Satyagraha is said to portray people’s raw and unleashed anger. This much awaited film is slated for release on August 30.

New face on the block
Beauty and Bollywood go hand in hand since the days of Madhubala and Meena Kumari. Be it Sharmila Tagore, Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Aishwarya Rai or Katrina Kaif; they’ve all impressed us by their looks before they made a mark with their talent.
Now joining the list of the industry’s most gorgeous new faces, is a stunner called Mandana Karimi. Hailing from Iran, the babe will hit the silver screen in maverick director Vikram Bhatt’s forthcoming film Bhaag Johnny as a lead alongside Kunal Khemu and Zoa Morani. Born to an Indian father and an Iranian mother, Mandana grew up in Tehran, before globetrotting and landing in India and being discovered by Vikram Bhatt. The girl may be a looker, but the actress in her is more concerned about versatility. “I don’t want to be known just for my looks,” she quips. “I’m ready to experiment with roles from everything cliché to bizarre. My aim is to enact varied characters with all kinds of shades,” remarks Mandana. But ask her about her role in Bhaag Johnny and all she says is, “Wait and watch. Let me not spoil the surprise.” Coming from a foreign country, one might think that Mandana would have to learn Hindi first. But the gal reveals, “I can speak Hindi pretty well, though I’m working on perfecting my accent now.” What’s more! Mandana has walked the ramp for many fashion designers, including JJ Valaya.

Drops of inspiration
Manpriya Singh Soul legend Brook Benton brought home the melancholy spirit of rain with his song, Rainy Night In Georgia. The record summed it all up in one line, I Believe It’s Raining All Over the World, and went onto become a chartbusting pop single in the 70s. Paradoxically, Bollywood comes replete with choruses on the joys of monsoon and the strong passionate feelings often associated with the season. Extreme as they might be but rain brings along with it the most evocative of feelings, ever experienced. Sad, nostalgic, romantic…it’s always a trip down the memory lane with the first shower of monsoon. Hall of Fame
Under my umbrella.. ela..ela..ela! When it comes to rain songs, everybody got to give it to Rihanna for giving us a single that comes instantly to mind. The R&B song spoke about the strength of a romantic relationship and was acclaimed by fans and critics alike for its convincing vocals and the infectious “ela” hook. Geri Halliwell’s It’s Raining Men too goes down the hall of fame for its catchy music and lyrics. A song where she speaks of the humidity rising, barometer readings getting low, and how the street is the place to go. Moving back to the classics, there’s the Academy Award Winner Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head by BJ Thomas. The song was written for the sound track to the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and ruled the billboards for a couple of weeks. Then there’s Prince’s title track Purple Rain that remained among the chartbusters at the time. Just in case you were moaning about the rainy weather, there’s the Beatles’ Rain to connect to. John Lennon explained that the song was about people cribbing about the weather. Never mind, a few decades later, there was Sting dreaming of rain and gardens in the desert sand. While the song may not have lyrics centered around the rain drops, it merits a mention. Youngsters take
Morning rain, windy weather, cloudy skies, there’s just so much to borrow from the monsoon. To each his own. Shares Palki Arora, hospitality and aviation student, “Rihanna’s Umbrella is an iconic rain song. In fact, about the time it came, it was a favourite not just with the girls and little girls but all the youngsters.” Six years after it first came out, there’s no missing the track on any mention of an umbrella or rain. There’s Thank You by Dido, a track where there’s a mention of the next day, the morning rain clouding the window and the inability to see beyond the drops. manpriya@tribunemail.com

A pair of blue denims from Hollister. Brand freak or street smart? It depends on what suits my attire and attitude. Choose one--sporty, glamorous or chic Sporty. Be a control freak!
If you want to have that dream physique, incorporate controlled body movements in your fitness regime Anil Juneja Sweat, perspire, attain! ………..well, not yet! For months, you have been longing for that fabulous figure with a washboard tummy and have subjected yourself to those grueling sessions at your fitness studio or a gym. But either you have ended up with minimal results or no results at all. Or, even injuries! If you really want your hard work to show the correct results then you need to understand as well as inculcate the concept of controlled body movements in your fitness regime. Controlled body movements in the context of exercising focuses on handling your body in a controlled and correct manner so that your positions don’t go wrong and you don’t suffer from any side effects but achieve the desired results. The enhanced body control and movement sense involves: Understanding the
technique
Beginning the exercise with correct posture and maintaining it during the exercise is of paramount importance. One should pay heed to the nuances of movements not only to avoid injury but for maximizing the benefits. Apt technique keeps the body in control and all its related movements are rendered to become the safest and most effective. For instance, if you perform all the 12 positions in Surya Namaskar with correct technique, then there will be a natural flow and rhythm in the entire exercise plus you will actually gain that flexibility without compromising on the health of your spine. Slow and conscious
movements
Yes, this means avoid any jerky movements. No jerks but consciously making the body movements slow and smooth. At one place, you are reducing the chances of injury and on the other; you are working on your muscles in correct manner. Let’s take the example of abdominal exercise like double leg raises. When you take your legs up to ninety degrees, you should do so on the count of five seconds and similarly it should take at least another five seconds to bring the legs down. Now the abdominals are working out not only on raising the legs up but they further work out against gravity on lowering the legs down. This controlled and contained work out of the body ensures that you are using the target muscles in the best possible way. In fact the main purpose of exercising is to use the target muscles itself and you justify the concept further by infusing the principle of controlled movement in it. Coordination with breath
Controlled bodily movement also underlines the synchronisation of breath with the body. During exercising your breath helps you to improve and support the movement. Suppose you are being instructed to breathe in on taking the arm up from zero to ninety degrees and as soon as you reached sixty degrees you started to breathe out! The entire coordination of breath with the movement became improper and your body further struggles to finish the exercise. So, you see that it is always important to correctly coordinate breath with the movement. Remember to breathe smoothly and deeply. Your breath is your savior; it will help you to perform the exercise or asana in a better way. Body & mind
Control is not just a physical aspect but mental too. One of the most important elements of performing well is to bring about complete awareness of the subtle and gross changes in the body while you work out. You got it right! Now no more gossiping and chatting with the fellow participants while exercising or being lost in the office environs and household affairs. Keep your mind, body, senses well rooted in the class and bring the awareness inside, you should know which muscles and joints of your body are getting affected by a particular exercise. The increased awareness accentuates the effects of the exercise and also enables you to check whether you are doing the exercise correctly or not. So, control over the body movements is the key to success. Once you develop movement sense, then you can also develop control and once you develop control, you will start attaining what you are perspiring for. (Juneja is a Chandigarh-based

Bowing down to Krrish 3
Krrish 3 has already become a winning proposition for its makers. Multiplex owners have decided to charge filmmakers for trailers and also for displaying film posters and standees. However, they have made an exception for Krrish 3, where they will not charge the makers anything for the trailers and promotional material as a goodwill gesture because the film is expected to become a Rs 200-crore blockbuster. top slot: The poster of Krrish 3
Bebo okay with sex scene
Kareena Kapoor Khan may be a much married actress but she is a complete professional. She has agreed to do an explosive lovemaking scene with Emraan Hashmi in a film co-produced by Ekta Kapoor and Karan Johar. The makers were skeptical about it but she had no qualms about it.
Mute button?
There is a problem with the trailer of Madras Cafe. It has been appreciated on YouTube but there is no volume on the dialogues in the trailer shown in cinemas and only the background music can be heard. This is due to a technical glitch in the master print.
Mental harassment
Salman Khan got injured on the sets of Mental while shooting a high-octane action scene. His injury caused him to limp on the sets but he managed to finish the schedule and is resting now. Injuries are in the air, it seems.

A host of options
Pretty girl Aishwarya Sakuja is enjoying her stint in India’s Dancing Superstars as a host. She talks to us about that, her next venture and not being ready for marriage yet. How are you enjoying India’s Dancing Superstars?
Hosting is a totally different from acting. It’s a lot of fun. I am enjoying the show. I am blessed with a good stylist who takes care of my look and hair. She ensures I look good in every episode. What’s next in serials? We heard Saas Bina Sasuraal might return with another season? I also heard that it might be back soon. I have already spoken to the media about it. Let’s see, there hasn’t been any official discussion on it. I am looking for a role that I will enjoy and will be different from the one I have done earlier. We all look for challenges in life. When are you planning to get married to your boyfriend? Not too soon; there’s still time. I want to focus on my work. Have you bought a car recently? Yes, I went with my boyfriend to pick it up. I realised that when you are in a relationship it’s so important to be together. Are you also looking at film offers? Film offers had come, but they didn’t work out. I recently made a guest appearance in a Kannada film.

Getting into the motion…
The song that is creating waves this season is Slow Motion Angreza from the most anticipated film, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. While the music of the song is given by Ehsaan Noorani, Loy Mendonsa and Shankar Mahadevan, it features the lyrical genius of Prasoon Joshi. Needless to say, Loy Mendonsa, Shankar Mahadevan and Sukhwinder Singh have done complete justice to the magical melody by tendering their voices to it. Let’s find out what the city folks have to say about it… Tango timeThe song makes you want to do the tango each time you hear it. It has a certain kind of peppiness to it, which is more than just a song that aims to serenade the women. It is up-beat, it is young, and it is vibrant. It’s the perfect flavour for the summer. Taran Kaur, student Retro feel
Though the song is very peppy and that it is a dance number, it also has the flavour of the past, especially the 60s pub culture. Even the setup is that of a country tavern and it sets you up in the mood to dance each time you hear it. Bindi Sharma, student Weaving the magic
Sukhwinder Singh gave us the Chaiya Chaiya, which was a huge hit among the masses and the magic of his voice still continues to mesmerise the audience. I love the lyrics and music of the song. It’s incredible. Amarinder Singh, student As told to Amarjot Kaur
