Chandigarh, July 9 The CBI had claimed that it had failed to find evidence to establish the charges against the accused in the case and the case should be closed. The report was filed last month and it was accepted today. It was on May 28, 2011, when the CBI had registered a criminal case against former principal director VK Srivastava and chief executive officer Ramandeep Singh of the Directorate of Defence Estate (Western Command) and one Jaswinder Kaur, a resident of Punjab, on the charge of cheating and under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Srivastava and Singh had allegedly demanded and accepted a bribe of Rs 3 lakh for appointing Kaur as the sub-divisional officer (SDO-III). According to the CBI, Kaur, through Ramandeep Singh, had paid a bribe of Rs 3 lakh to Srivastava. The bribe was demanded and accepted in 2009 and the case was registered after an inquiry into the case. The role of some other senior officials of the Defence Estate and Western Command had also come under the scanner during the investigations. However, it was only Srivastava, Singh and Kaur who were pleaded as accused by the investigating agency. As per sources, an incriminating audio conversation between Singh and Srivastava was made available to the CBI by another defence officer. The conversation was recorded on a mobile phone which was handed over to the agency. The case was registered by the CBI on the basis of source information. However, none of the three accused were arrested. |

4 of family attacked, two arrested
Mohali, July 9 The injured have been identified as Inderjit Singh, his uncle Sardara Singh, his aunts Nirmail Kaur and Gurdial Kaur. Indierjit, who suffered injuries on his forehead and arm, was admitted to the Civil Hospital. Inderjit Singh is the brother-in-law of Harchand Singh of Fatehpur Jattan village in Patiala, the main accused in the case. The police said Harchand and his four accomplices attacked Inderjit Singh and other members of his family. One of their accomplices, Gurcharan Singh, a resident of Garhi village, is a relative of an Akali leader of the Banur area. The police has arrested Gurcharan Singh and Sonu Bhardwaj, while another accused Karamjit Singh and an unidentified person are still at large. Harchand Singh, who suffered injuries, was shifted to the Phase VI Civil Hospital at Mohali. DSP (City II) Ajinder Singh said: “Harchand will be arrested after he is discharge from the hospital.” DSP Ajinder Singh said Harchand and Karamjit Singh had gone to Inderjit Singh’s residence last night where they had an altercation. “Harchand Singh and his four accomplices reached Inderjit’s house this morning and attacked Inderjeet and members of his family with swords and rods,” said Ajinder Singh. Residents of the village who gathered at the spot caught hold of Harchand Singh, Gurcharan Singh and Sonu Bhardwaj, while Karamjit Singh and another unidentified person managed to flee. The agitated residents damaged the car in which the accused came. DSP Ajinder Singh said raids were on to nab the remaning accused. A case under Sections 452, 323, 148, 149 and 506 of the IPC has been registered against the accused at the Sohana police station. |

Rs 4.5 lakh looted at gunpoint
Panchkula, July 9 “The victim said one of the miscreants pointed a gun at him and asked him to handover the bag containing cash,” said Balwant Singh, SHO of the Mansa Devi Complex police station. Rajiv said they took away his wallet and a mobile phone. Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashwin Shenvi said: “We are working on various theories. Since it is a busy road, someone should have seen the miscreants.”

NRI woman duped of gold jewellery, cash
Chandigarh, July 9 In her complaint to the police, Gupta stated that the incident took place when she was going to the market and she spotted a man dressed in orange clothes. He enquired about directions towards Sector 28 from her. In the meantime, a woman came and claimed that the man was a known spiritual personality and he could resolve her all problems within minutes, she added in her complaint. Sources say the conman lured the woman with his conversations and told her to put all her jewelleryin a white handkerchief so that when she opened it in her house, the value of ornaments would be trippled and all her sorrows would end. The conman then asked her to close her eyes as he took the handkerchief from her. She then opened her eyes and he handed her
the handkerchief after reciting some mantras. He then told her to open it in her place. When the woman returned to her house and unfolded the handkerchief, her gold ornaments were replaced with metal ornaments. She then raised the alarm and called the police. A case of cheating was registered at the Sector 26 police station. |

Chandigarh, July 9 Woman alleges rape
A woman alleged that a man raped her on the promise of marriage. The woman alleged that the man, hailing from Yamunanagar, raped her on March 16, 2011, by promising to marry her, but later refused. They lived in Yamunagar together for two years, but he later did not agree to marry her. A case under Sections 376, 420 and120B of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 3 police station.
Minor booked, sent to juvenile home
A minor boy was booked allegedly for abducting and offensive sexual behavior with a minor girl on July 7. The police said the 16-year-old boy putting up in the neighbourhood of the13-year-old girl in the Industrial area, took the girl to his house. He kept her forcefully at his place. He made attempts to outrage the modesty of the girl, but she managed to escape and raised the alarm. The police has registered a case of wrongful confinement (342), assault on a woman (354) and kidnapping (363) of the IPC and Section 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offence Act 2012 in the Industrial area. The minor boy was arrested and sent to juvenile home. |

Tantrik arrested on molestation charge
Chandigarh, July 9 The victim also alleged that accused tantrik Pandit Vikesh Kumar, made her obscene MMS on his cellphone and threatened her with dire consequences. Vikesh was arrested and his cell phone was being scrutinised for establishing the allegations of obscene MMS. DSP (south) Surjeet Singh Malik said charges of making obscene MMS of the girl would be slapped after scrutinising his cellphone. The police has also seized other materials, including some CDs etc from the office of the accused and they are also being scrutinized. |

Two arrested on murder charge
Mohali, July 9 The police said the trio had consumed liquor. The victim's brothers, Parmajit Singh and Sajjan Singh, who were passing by, rushed to the spot and took Ranjit to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead. The accused will be presented in the court tomorrow. Man dies
Mohali: A person with symptoms of dengue fever died at Government Medical College Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh, today. The patient was a resident of Balongi village. He was running temperature and was rushed to the Civil Hospital at Phase VI, where doctors referred him to the
GMCH-32. Mohali Civil Surgeon Dr Rajiv Bhalla said they were yet to ascertain the real cause of his death. He said they were launching a campaign to create awareness among villagers. |

Chandigarh, July 9 Striker Balkar posted the first goal in the 26th minute while Harpal doubled the lead in the 29th minute. The first half was sealed at 2-0. 3 city schools to vie for top slot
Chandigarh, July 9 Every year, private, semi-government and government-run academies take part in the tournament. Government and private schools will be participating in the meet for the first time. "The proposal has been given a green signal. The tournament is being organised in Chandigarh. We want the local players to come forward. Such tournaments provide a platform to sportspersons. The step has been taken for the betterment of soccer players," said VK Singh, Finance-cum-Sports Secretary. No government school has taken part in the all-India tournament so far. Though DAV School and Chandigarh Association have participated in the previous editions, only the Chandigarh Football Academy (CFA) has been able to perform well in the tournaments. "Three teams winning the Inter-School Football Tournament for Boys (U-17) will be participating in the all-India meet. Players will have to work hard and coaches will have to select the best players," said a local coach. A senior player,Rakesh Gautam, said, "Now, even the schools will put in efforts to match the standards of the state-run academy. Soccer will no longer remain confined to academies," said the player.
