Ghaggar pollution
Dera Bassi, July 7 Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal had brought the issue to the notice of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh Chief Ministers, as the domestic and industrial waste of the cities of these states is being discharged in to Ghaggar. The polluted water from the Sukhna choe, flowing from Chandigarh and Panchkula side that mixes with the river near Bhankarpur, is highly contaminated. Residents of the nearby villages have also complained of the water being hazardous for consumption and agricultural purposes. This polluted water is also infecting the ground water, which in turn is making residents prone to diseases. The bad effluents released from the factories are also damaging the crops. Joginder Singh, XEN, Pollution Control Board, and SDO Gursaran Grag said the board was persistently checking the pollution problem in the Ghaggar. They said the effluents were coming from Haryana, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh. A treatment plant has been set up near Zirakpur by Public Health Department to get the domestic effluents treated. This treated water will be used for agricultural purposes. The board officials said a common effluent treatment plant would be set up near Dera Bassi too, which would help in treating the industrial effluents. Greater Mohali Area Development Authority is also planning to build a treatment plant. — OC |
