The Delhi Government today granted an OBC status to the Jat community in the city, thus providing it the benefits of reservation in government services. The decision was announced by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today in an All India Jats Convention at Talkatora Stadium.

Teen raped by married man
New Delhi, July 5
A 16-year-old girl has alleged that a man already married raped her under the pretext of marrying her. The incident was reported from east Delhi's Ghazipur area last night, police said today.

PG diploma in publishing
New Delhi, July 5
A one-year postgraduate diploma course in publishing has been launched by Dr BR Ambedkar University in collaboration with the National Book Trust ((NBT), India, from this academic session.

Nepalese tries to slit throat
New Delhi, July 5
A 27-year-old Nepali national allegedly tried to slit his throat with a knife at Patel Chowk this afternoon. The man has been identified as Ram Gurung. The incident took place at about 1 pm. He was admitted to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and has been discharged.

DPCC meet to zero in on poll plan

The campaign strategy for the forthcoming Delhi Assembly elections will mark the focus of first meeting of newly formed executive committee of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC), which is expected to take place next week.

It will be the first meeting after the appointment of party in charge Shakeel Ahmed who is also the general secretary of the All India Congress Committee.

Pulling out all the stops to ensure victory in the assembly polls due in November, the party is geared up to develop better contact with the people.

The new 26-member executive committee of the DPCC, consisting of 12 vice-presidents and 15 general secretaries, was formed on June 27, after eight years under the presidentship of Delhi Congress chief JP Aggarwal. The previous committee that comprised almost double the number of members was formed in September 2005 under the leadership of senior Congress leader late Ram Babu Sharma.

Picked amongst the favourites of Aggarwal, nine new names have surfaced as vice-presidents of the party out of the total of 12. They include Ashok Kumar Jain, SK Puri, Savitri Tomar, Pana Lal Kherewal, Sukhbir Sharma, Anjali Rai, Tarif Singh, Chattar Singh and Mouzamil Siddique.

Jats get OBC status in Delhi

The Delhi Government today granted an OBC status to the Jat community in the city, thus providing it the benefits of reservation in government services.
The decision was announced by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today in an All India Jats Convention at Talkatora Stadium.

Terming the community the backbone of the economy, Dikshit said that it has been deeply involved in agriculture and is politically conscious. It has produced mass leaders.

"Jats rendered substantial contribution to the freedom struggle. In fact, the community actively took part in the 1857 freedom struggle. It is learnt that every Jat family has been sending one of its family members to the Indian Army," she said.

She also agreed to their demand for giving them land for building a 'Kisan Bhawan' in Delhi. She asked the leaders of Jat Mahasabha to submit an application in this regard. The allotment of land will be done by the Delhi Development Authority which comes under the Union Urban Development Ministry.

Teen raped by married man

New Delhi, July 5
A 16-year-old girl has alleged that a man already married raped her under the pretext of marrying her. The incident was reported from east Delhi's Ghazipur area last night, police said today.

The accused named Durgesh Pandey had allegedly identified himself to the victim as an Indian Air Force officer. He is absconding.

The victim lives with her parents at Pandav Nagar. She is a class 12 student. In her complaint to the police, the girl alleged that Pandey solemnised a false marriage at a temple. He then allegedly took her to Goa on honeymoon.

They first met in 2012, when Pandey posed himself as an Air Force officer. He then began meeting her and later proposed to her.

He would allegedly take her to a rented house in Ghazipur, where he developed physical relations with her. As the victim tried to spurn his advances, he talked of marrying her.

According to the police, after the victim returned from Goa, she learnt that Pandey was an unemployed married man. She informed her parents who decided to approach the police.

A case has been registered at the Ghazipur police station over the victim's statement.

The police are searching for Pandey.

PG diploma in publishing

A one-year postgraduate diploma course in publishing has been launched by Dr BR Ambedkar University in collaboration with the National Book Trust ((NBT), India, from this academic session.

The one-year (two semesters) PG diploma in publishing will be able to develop well-rounded professionals aspiring to take up publishing as their career.

The fee of one-year course has been fixed at Rs 32,000 and it will have an intake of 20 students every academic year.

"The publishing and printing technology has undergone a sea-change, hence, it is essential to learn all the new aspects of publishing. The programme has been developed through a consultative process with experienced professionals from the world of publishing," Shyam Menon, Vice-Chancellor of Dr BR Ambedkar University.

Nepalese tries to slit throat

“He was intoxicated when he took a vegetable knife and tried to slit his throat,” said a senior police official.
