Kiwi fruit is not from New Zealand as its name might indicate. Kiwi (Chinese gooseberry in English) is, in fact, a native of south China where they call it y`E1ng t`E1o. When Jim McLaughlin, an enterprising New Zealand fruit grower first planted it in New Zealand, he found it a be a big hit with American soldiers present in New Zealand during Second World War. So, assisted by New Zealand Fruit Federation, he decided to promote this fruit in the US under a new name "Kiwi", which they thought the buyers will find more attractive than y`E1ng t`E1o or Chinese gooseberry.
