Prof Achru’s book to be a milestone: Secy
Fatehgarh Sahib, June 25 The book is a collection of 32 highly researched and informative essays dealing with various aspects of the Indian as well as Punjabi cultures. While congratulating Professor Achhru on this achievement, Dr Sran hoped that the book would prove a milestone in propagating and popularising the rich Punjabi culture and inspire the youth to preserve its positive values. 807 papers rejected in Fatehgarh Sahib
Fatehgarh Sahib, June 25 The rejected nominations include 226 for the post of sarpanch and 581 for the post of panch. Resentment prevailed among the candidates whose nominations papers were rejected by the presiding officers on one or the other ground. The agitated candidates today lodged protest with the Deputy Commissioner and Additional Deputy Commissioner. A large number of rejected candidates, while talking to the media persons, alleged that their papers had been rejected under political pressure. They said their names were displayed on the final list, but now they have been told that their nomination had been rejected. Congress MLA and secretary, AICC, Kuljit Singh Nagra alleged that returning officers were working in a biased manner. They were asking the Congress candidates to bring four witnesses while filing nomination, while no such rule applied for the SAD candidates, he said. He said the Congress candidates were made to stand in long queues to deposit nomination papers, where as SAD candidates’ papers were received immediately. Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra termed all these allegations as baseless. He said sensing defeat in the elections, the Congress leaders had started making false accusations. In Sirhind block 195 nominations for sarpanch and 478 for panch were rejected. In Khamano block three nominations for sarpanch and 5 for panch, in Khera block 17 for sarpanch and 64 for panch, in Bassi Pathana block two for sarpanch and 19 for panch, and in Amloh block nine nominations for sarpanch and 15 for panch were rejected. |

Students too made contributions for the rehabilitation of flood-affected people. PATIALA: The teaching and non-teaching staff of Khalsa College have decided to contribute one-day salary to the Chief Minister Relief Fund to extend help to flood victims in Uttarakhand. Kalka, June 25 54 panchayats elected unanimously Ropar: Rupnagar today created a record of sorts with unanimous election of panches and sarpanches of 54 panchayats in the Rupnagar Assembly area. Disclosing this in a statement released by the SAD party head office here today, the secretary and spokesman of the party Dr Daljit Singh Cheema said this was for the first time in the history of the area when such a large number of sarpanches and panches had been elected unanimously. Carpenter kills friend with saw over utensils
Chandigarh, June 25 The man was murdered at around 10 am at the hutment on the rear side of Hotel Solitaire. Thakur, who was in an inebriated state, confronted Munshi Ram and asked him if he had stolen his three utensils. As the victim expressed ignorance and denied having stolen his utensils, Thakur took out his hand saw and hit Munshi Ram on the neck and head. The rickshaw puller died on the spot due to excessive bleeding as his throat was slit. Munshi Ram’s two minor daughters, nine-year-old Reshma and seven-year-old Ruksaar, were witness to the murder and Reshma immediately rushed outside and raised a hue and cry. She summoned a beat constable who was in the NAC market and narrated the incident. The police immediately reached the spot and arrested the accused. The victim was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. The deceased’s wife was not living with him and both the daughters will now be sent to Snehalaya, the police said. Munshi Ram hailed from Kanpur and had been residing in the city for the past many years. The accused, Thakur hailed from Rai Bareilly in UP. Both the accused and the victim knew each other and they had drinks together last night. The two had reportedly entered into a violent scuffle last night over the issue of utensils while having drinks. The police said Thakur used to work as a carpenter on daily wage. He used to sell boiled eggs by the roadside on days when he had no job. A case of murder under section 302 of the IPC has been registered at the Mani Majra police station.
Nine-year-old girl showed courage
Deceased Munshi Ram's daughters Reshma and Ruksaar have now been orphaned. Their mother left them some years ago, following a fight with their father. They were taken along by the owner of Sharma Timber Store where his wife took care of the two today. The police said the two girls would be sent to Snehalaya. Nine-year-old Reshma showed tremendous courage and presence of mind as she was quick in calling the beat constable and narrating the entire incident, the police said. |

Books stolen from doc’s room at PGI
Chandigarh, June 25 Dr Shobhan Babu, Junior Resident, department of pharmacology, PGI, reported that someone had stolen books from his room on June 24. The police has registered a case of theft under section 380 of the IPC at the Sector 11 police station. This is the second incident of theft reported from the PGI this year. In the previous incident, Dr Vineetha Raghu had reported on March 29 that her mobile phone, cash, ATM card, bag and documents were stolen from the consultant room, department of radio diagnosis, Trauma Ward, PGI. The police had later apprehended Amit Prasar on the basis of CCTV footage on April 2. Prasar was a resident of Sector 25. |

Chandigarh, June 25 Child goes missing from Raipur Kalan
A 10-year-old boy went missing from his house at Raipur Kalan. Ashish, a student of Class IV, had gone out to play on Sunday morning but did not return home. His father Ram Jeevan, a labourer, complained to the police about his disappearance. Ashish was studying at government school, Raipur Kalan. He was wearing a white shirt and blue trousers when he left his home. The police has registered a case of kidnap.
Clash in Ram Darbar leaves two injured
A Ram Darbar resident was critically injured after he was attacked by a group of youngsters. The police said Ravi was attacked due to an old enmity. Ravi of Phase-2, Ram Darbar, stated that on June 24, he was standing outside his house at night. In the meantime, Kaka called up Ravi and they both walked to the market. When Ravi and Kaka reached near the market, Sanjay Kana, Ravi, Manish Bakra, Deepa, Pardeep, Kamal Thappa and Goldy allegedly attacked them with sharp weapons. They attacked them with iron rods and bricks. Ravi and Kaka were admitted to a hospital in the city. The police has registered a case of attempt to murder (307) and causing grievous hurt (325) of the IPC in the matter. |

It said the crime seemed to have been perpetrated by the same youngsters who had snatched the gold chain and earrings of the mother-in-law of a councillor in Sector 40 last week. Shakambari Rawat was returning home after a morning walk at 7.20 am when her gold chain was snatched by the miscreants. In both the incidents, the miscreants were riding black bikes.
