City resident dies in mishap
Fatehgarh Sahib, June 24 As per the FIR lodged at the Fatehgarh Sahib police station, Rajesh Ghai (36), a resident of Sector 50-B, was coming from the Chandigarh side, when a truck coming from the opposite direction hit his Maruti car. Following the accident, passers-by took the victim to the Civil Hospital, Fatehgarh Sahib, where he was declared brought dead. Station House Officer, Fatehgarh Sahib, Varinderjeet Singh said the deceased was working as a consultant with a private firm. He was on his way to Sirhind in this regard. He said the deceased’s family had been informed and the body had been kept at the Civil Hospital. The post-mortem would be conducted tomorrow, he said. The truck driver managed to flee. The police, however, took the truck in its custody. A case under Sections 279 and 304-A of the IPC has been registered. A pall of gloom descended on Rajesh Ghai’s residence when the news of tragedy reached there. The deceased in survived by wife, Chitra, who works with Haryana Roadways, and five-year-old son Arpit. |

SBoP to provide student loans for higher education
Fatehgarh Sahib, June 24 The bank will be providing student loans to youths for pursuing higher studies. Gupta was visiting the campus to preside over the inauguration ceremony of the 1,123rd branch of the bank. Jathedar Avtar Singh Makkar, president, SGPC, and Chancellor of the university, inaugurated the branch. Gupta said the bank had covered all the universities and leading educational institutes of the state. He said Fatehgarh Sahib was a pilot district for the newly introduced Direct Cash Transfer Scheme, and the bank had upgraded all its branches accordingly. He said further steps were being taken to widen the reach of net and mobile banking. After inaugurating the new branch at the university, Jathedar Avtar Singh Makkar handed over a cheque for Rs 3 crore to the bank as deposit, but at the same time urged the bank officials to provide loans to the university at cheaper rates to facilitate infrastructural development. Gupta said the bank had introduced Agriculture Gold Scheme for farmers, through which they could get a loan by keeping their gold ornaments in the bank custody, against which the bank would charge only seven per cent interest rate. He said if the farmer returned the loan within the stipulated time, the rate of interest would be only four per cent. |

Jail officials recover cellphones from inmates
Ambala, June 24 On the complaint of the Deputy Superintendent of Jail, a case was registered against six inmates including Jaiveer, Om Parkash, Gurjeet, Vishal and Narender at th eBaldev Nagar police station in Ambala City. The jail officials, led by Deputy Superintendent of Jail Rajinder Singh, conducted a search in various barracks, during which the items were recovered. This is not for the first time that mobile phones have been recovered from the jail inmates. A few days back, during a similar drive, six mobile phones were recovered from inmates. On August 4, last year, the jail authorities recovered as many as 20 mobile phones. Four jail wardens were also arrested for supplying a mobile phone to inmates. The jail authorities had planned to set up a jammer on the jail premises to keep a check, but nothing was done in this regard. |
Three arrested for snatching, theft
Chandigarh, June 24 Umesh of Sector 22-C alleged that Hardeep Singh of Mohali was caught red-handed while trying to snatch his mobile phone. He said Hardeep came from the behind and tried to snatch his mobile phone. He raised an alarm and Hardeep was nabbed. A case of theft under section 379 of the IPC has been registered and the accused arrested. In another incident, PL Sateja, secretary of the Army Society, Sector-44, alleged that Narsudeen of Sector 41 and Sawar of Burail village were caught while stealing the battery of a motor cycle (PB-13AB-0151). Rajpura police picks up suspected criminals from Phase VII house
Mohali, June 24 The youths, identified as Ram Pal, a resident of Una (Himachal Pradesh), and Harjit Singh, a resident of New Delhi, are said to be members of a gang involved in robbery and other such crimes. According to sources, a team consisting of Station House Officer, Rajpura police station (Sadar), Sukhwinder Singh and CIA in-charge Mohinder Singh, along with other officers, reached the Phase VII house at around 9 am. “The youngsters tried to flee, but were overpowered by the police,” said an eyewitness who resides nearby. Sources said the Rajpura police had arrested some persons along with arms near Basantpura on the Rajpura-Sirhind road a few days ago. “During their interrogation they had confessed that the gang was being operated from the house in Phase VII, Mohali, following which the police team raided the premises,” said a source. According to neighbouring residents, the house was rented out and around eight youngsters were staying there. “Their activities were mysterious as they used to lock the main gate of the house even when they were inside. A complaint regarding their suspected activities was also made, but the local police did not bother to do any background check,” said a resident. The Fatehgarh Sahib police too had recovered a huge quantity of narcotics from a house in Zirakpur in April, and arrested a Punjab Police inspector from Naya Gaon in this connection. The Mohali police was caught unawares then too. |

‘Rape victim’, female accomplice booked for criminal conspiracy
Panchkula, June 24 The woman and the youth, both 23 years of age, are residents of Sirsa and were staying in Chandigarh. The youth reportedly belongs to an affluent family. Sources said the two were in contact for a long time. The police said the woman took the youth to an apartment in Mansa Devi Complex, Sector 5, on the pretext of seeing the apartment. The ‘crime’ was allegedly committed there. The girl, who also kept a female friend in the loop, sent the youth to get a bottle of bear, the police said. In the meantime, she called the police control room, alleging that she was raped by the youth. Although medical reports showed that the youth had sexual intercourse with the woman, the police found that woman’s allegations of rape were not true. She, along with her friend, had hatched the conspiracy in order to extort money from the youth, the police said. Police Commissioner Rajbir Deswal said although a case of rape had been registered against the youth, a case of criminal conspiracy had also been registered against the woman and her friend. |

Punjab SP booked for abetting suicide
Mohali, June 24 A case was registered today against Mohan Lal, Superintendent of Police (Headquarters), Batala, under Section 306 of the IPC at the Zirakpur police station. On May 17, a 23-year-old woman, Lovepreet Kaur, aka Loveleen Kaur, had committed suicide by jumping off Mohan Lal’s sixth floor flat at Rishi Apartment in Zirakpur. The police had initiated an inquest proceeding under Section 174 of the CrPC following the incident. The case has been registered following an inquiry by Mohali Superintendent of Police (Detective) Balwinder Singh. The inquiry report recommended action against the officer. Punjab Human Rights Organisation had also conducted an inquiry and levelled serious allegations against Mohan Lal for allegedly driving the victim to suicide, and recommended action against him. According to sources, the Mohali SSP has also constituted a special investigation team of three officers under the supervision of SP, Dera Bassi, Anil Kumar. Inspector Tarlochan Singh, Station House Officer, Zirakpur, and Inspector Gurdial Singh, SHO, Lalru, will be other two members of the team that will conduct further investigation.

Tennis court in a state of neglect
Chandigarh, June 24 The clay court that was inaugurated on May 28 by the Adviser to the UT Administrator along with Education-cum-Finance Secretary, Director Public Instructions (DPI) and many other top officials, is in a poor condition. Grass has started growing near the nets of the court. Principal of the school said the matter has been put into the notice of the officials of the engineering department and it will be overcome once the rains are over. “We are well aware of the situation and to avoid major losses, we have appointed sweepers for regular cleanliness of the court. The maintenance department suggested that the work should be done after the rains and once the rains are over, we will improve the condition of the courts,” said Sanjay Walia. When asked about the absence of players, he mentioned, “We are waiting for schools to open after summer vacation on July 1. Once the school is started, we will adjust special periods to train children. Only then, the courts can be used in proper manner,” said the principal. Notably, when contacted Gajendra Singh, director coaching and development CLTA (Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association), he added, “If one locks his house for over a month, it’s obvious what would happen there. The programme will start from July 1 and the courts will be taken care from then. It was decided well in time that the training programmes will start from July 1, so we cannot approach the courts before the decided period,” said Gajendra Singh. The CLTA has been taken into consideration to look after the coaching aspect. Interestingly, during the inauguration of the courts the education-cum-sports secretary mentioned that these lawn courts would also be available for the gully players. But no approach has been made to open the courts for gully players during the ongoing summer vacation. On the other end, some officials of the UT Engineering Department seeking anonymity stated, “The project in various schools were performed after an intense pressure form authorities. If the programme was already scheduled to start form July 1, we could have made these courts for sportsperson given more time to come up with more sportsperson friendly,” said the official. |

Chandigarh, June 24 A fine bowling performance by Arshnoor Pannu helped the winning side posting the victory. He claimed 4 for 12 to restrict the DAV side to bundle out for 75 runs in 34 overs. Opener Hritik contributed 22 runs while Nanak added 12 runs in the team’s total. The duo also stood for a 44 runs opening partnership for the DAV team. Arshnoor was equally supported by Saksham, who claimed 3 for 14 while Karandeep Walia took 2 for 15. In reply, the CCA team achieved the target with Deepinder playing an unbeaten knock of 46 runs later Jashan Pannu contributed 12 runs.
