Cyclist killed in accident

Chandigarh, June 16
A cyclist was killed after he was hit by a recklessly driven vehicle in Industrial Area on late last evening. In another accident, a cyclist was hit by a vehicle near the Civil Secretariat today.

The police said an unidentified cyclist was hit by a speeding vehicle near a poultry farm in Industrial Area, Phase- I. The driver fled the scene. The cyclist was rushed to the Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, where the doctors declared him dead on arrival. A case has been registered.

Meanwhile, Jaswant Singh, a constable of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), was injured after his cycle was hit by a vehicle today. He was admitted to the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16. A case has been registered at the Sector 3 police station.

Immigration firm owner, employees booked

The police has registered cases of cheating and criminal breach of trust against the owner and employees of an immigration company here.

According to the police, the immigration company, Creative Apartments Private Limited, with offices in Phase VII and Phase X, allegedly cheated people on the pretext of sending them abroad.

Rajinder Singh of Chaniyan village in Jalandhar district had complained to the SSP that Satpal Singh, who was running the company, and Sonia, an employee of the company, had allegedly taken Rs 1.03 lakh from him to send him to Canada. However, they neither sent him to Canada nor returned his money.

In another complaint to the SSP, Gurpreet Singh of PAP Lines, Rama Mandi, said Satpal Singh, Rajveer Kaur and Pooja allegedly took Rs 94,000 from him to send him to Canada, but they neither kept their promise nor returned his money.

Similarly, Devinder Singh, a resident of Sakrulapur in Mohali district, complained to the SSP that Satpal Singh and Rajveer Kaur took Rs 1.03 lakh from him to send him abroad. In the fourth complaint to the police, Gurmukh Singh of Phase XI here alleged that Satpal and Sonia took Rs 1.03 lakh from him. In both these cases, the complainants alleged that they were neither sent abroad nor their money was returned.

Cases were registered under Sections 406, 420 and 120-B of the IPC and Section 24 of the Immigration Act in this regard.

Minor girl rescued; man arrested

Mohali, June 16
The police has rescued a minor girl and arrested one person on the charge of kidnapping.

According to the police, the brother of the girl, who worked as a maid in houses in Sector 71, had made a complaint to the SSP on June 1 that his neighbour Manohar Kumar had allegedly forcibly taken away his sister. The girl’s father works as a labourer.

The police arrested Manohar Kumar from the Chawla Chowk here and rescued the girl who was with him. The girl was taken for a medical examination, after which she was restored to her parents.

The police said during the questioning Manohar Kumar admitted that he had taken the girl to Meerut in UP and had now returned after a few days.

The police has registered a case under Sections 363-A and 366 of the IPC in this regard.

The man was produced in the court of Judicial Magistrate-cum-Duty Magistrate Varun Nagpal and was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.

Anhat Singh, Shishir Lamba win chess titles

Chess players Anhat Singh, Shishir Lamba, Saumya Lamba, Arunima Goyal and Tarini Goyal bagged the title in their respective categories during the concluding day of the Chandigarh U-19 and U-11 Open Girl Chess Championship at St Xaviers’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, today.

Anhat and Shishir won the open category (U-11) with 4.5 points while Saumya bagged girls (U-11) event with 3 points. Tarini won the open category (U-19) with four points and her sister Tarini bagged the title of girls U-19 category with 4.5 points. A total of 53 players from different local schools participated in the championship.

The organisers have selected Tarini Goyal, Arjit, Jaskeerat Singh and Archit Gupta in U-19 open category, Arunima Goyal, Simranjeet Kaur, Kashish Kaushal and Diya Sharma in the U-19 girls category, Anhat Singh and Shishir Lamba in the U-11 open category, Saumya Lamba and Surbhi Singh in the U-11 girls category, to represent the city in the upcoming sports event to be held at Luckhnow from July 10 to 18 and Delhi from September 1 to 11.

Wrestlers felicitated

Chandigarh, June 16
The Gulzar Akhara Club today felicitated its three wrestlers, who participated in the Junior Asia Championship held at Thailand.

The wrestlers were awarded cash prize at the Akhara at a felicitation ceremony held at Zirakpur. The two wrestlers, Santosh Kumar Yadav and Prabh Pal Singh, were awarded Rs 31,000 each for attaining bronze medal in the 50 kg and 84 kg weight category, respectively. Another wrestler, Gurpreet Singh, received a cash award of Rs 11, 000 for participating in the same championship. —TNS
