It is party time for children at home this holiday season. With the rise in the number of animation programmes on television, there’s no complaining! Young channel surfers have been spoilt for choice for cartoon programmes. What’s more, the digital world is full of an ever-growing number of interactive cartoon characters, comic animated apps and popular comic book heroes available in animated form!

Joining the animated force very soon on the small screen are the Jedi Knights, Darth Vader and the Galactic Empire. The iconic series Star Wars will be turned into a new cartoon series for the Disney XD channel, which is all set to be telecast next year. Though this isn’t the first time Star Wars has gone animated. This franchise became an animated show in 2008 with five seasons of The Clone Wars. Parents and children will be happy to watch this series together!

A quick channel surfing will give insights to even a novice on how Japanese cartoon characters are fighting for screen space with Indian mythological characters! Doraemon, Kiteretsu, Shinchan are as popular as Chotta Bheem, Krishna and Ganesha! From Jake and the Neverland Pirates on Disney Junior to Tokyo Pig on Hungama TV, there is no escaping the growing reach and charm of animated series for the child!

Popular Walt Disney characters are still household names and their re-runs are enjoyed by the young and the old so are the iconic superheroes translated from comic books to the screen. Spiderman, Superman and Batman are still going strong though the much-loved Phantom has been replaced by the likes of Ben 10 and Power Rangers.

Competing with the old stalwarts of the animated screen is the adaptation of popular comic book hero such as the young detective and a Good Samaritan, Tintin, on Discovery Kids. Children can now unravel Tintin’s curious cases in three exciting movies on Discovery Kids. Based on the inspiring and timeless stories of Tintin, this character engages children with his intriguing escapades, curious mind, riveting investigations and solves the deepest mysteries. Tintin movies on Discovery Kids include Tintin and the Calculus Affair, Tintin and the Lake of Sharks and Tintin and the Prisoners of the Sun. Who can resist the intrepid young reporter Tintin and his trusted aide Snowy travel around the world accompanied by an interesting cast of characters, including Captain Haddock, Professor Calculus and the detective Twins Thompson and Thomson.

According to Rahul Johri, senior vice-president and general manager of South Asia, Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific, "Tintin will entertain, engage and enlighten the kids with his clever and curious adventures."

Popular channels like Cartoon Network and Pogo have a special treat for children this summer with an impressive line-up of new shows and movies. For the action adventurer and discoverer, there is the new series Scan 2 Go that shows the epic space adventure of young men and women. For die-hard fans of animated series Pokémon, there is the new edition of Pokémon: Black & White. This 14th season of the series premieres on June 17 where Pokémon trainer Ash Ketchum Ash and his Pikachu set out to enter the Unova League, encountering new Pokémon and battling rivals and gym leaders.

From the animated movies' stable, there is Batu Gaiden, which is a journey into a world inspired by ancient India where there are three races of humans, vanars and rakshas who play a supernatural version of cricket called Kree-Kaht. The story is about a boy named Batu, who aspires to become the greatest Kree-Kaht player of all time.

Game Over Mighty Raju is yet another animated movie offering from Pogo where posing as the developer of a Mighty Raju video game, Kaarati tricks Mighty Raju, takes away his powers and traps his friends in the virtual video game. For a quick mythological update Sons of Ram on Pogo is an ideal holiday watch this summer. Another animated movie Humara Hero Shaktiman is all set for its maiden journey on June 30 on Pogo.

For true blue Tom and Jerry addicts, Cartoon Network has the new movie Tom and Jerry meet Sherlock Holmes to offer. Children can watch the legendary Sherlock Holmes find the real thief, with the help of his assistant Dr Watson, and, of course, Tom and Jerry. The trademark rivalry between these raucous rivals is endearingly played out on the small screen as they scamper, scurry, scoot and speed along the streets, alleys and rooftops in the name of justice in this unique concept.

There’s more to this line up, especially for action adventurer on Discovery Kids with its series Transformers Prime. This action-packed animation series features the arch rivals, the Autobots and the Decepticons, battle it out for the control of planet Earth. Transformers Prime catches the imagination of kids with interesting elements of suspense, drama between robots and humans and awe-inspiring animation. It presents iconic characters that include Autobots Optimus Prime and Bumblebee, and the ominous Decepticon Megatron, as well as introducing new human characters.

With sharper technology and cutting-edge visuals, animation is finding favour with the young and the old as it is now being increasingly patronised on the big screen as well. It is a heartening sign that though ignored over a long time, Indian animation has finally come into limelight with Nikhil Advani’s animated movie Delhi Safari, which won the best animated film honour at the 60th National Film Awards last year. An animated journey of animals and birds from Mumbai to Delhi, Delhi Safari is the country’s first stereoscopic 3D animation film.

With the evolution of technology, animation is more real and also virtually everywhere around us in the form of apps, movies and, of course, on the telly.
