The rainwater entered houses and shops, causing heavy losses. The hollow claims made by the municipal council came to the fore, as it failed to drain out the water from the inundated areas. Earlier, on June 13, rainwater had also entered the building complex of the municipal council, raising questions on the ability of the civic body to deal with similar situations.

Shopkeepers in the area said they faced similar problems every year, as the area was lacking proper drainage facilities. They said no customer visited their shops today because of waterlogging.

Shopkeepers said they had been demanding a permanent solution for this problem, but nothing had been done by the civic body. They said the situation was likely to worsen after the onset of monsoon.

Toy trains to Shimla ferrying tourists beyond capacity
Hemant Kumar

Kalka, June 15
Toy trains running on Kalka-Shimla Heritage Rail Track have become the favourite mode of transport for tourists visiting the erstwhile summer capital these days.

Due to this huge demand, all the trains plying on the route are running beyond capacity. The unreserved compartments are jam packed all the times. The Kalka railway station officials said the heavy rush, which is due to the summer holidays, is beyond the capacity of the running trains.

In general compartments, many passengers can be seen sitting and standing near the doors. Officials said the overloading could also lead to serious accidents. Last year, some students, who were standing at the door of a train, sustained injuries near Shogi and Tara Devi Station.

Vinay Arora, station superintendent, said drivers and guards of all the trains had been told to ensure safety of passengers. He said two holiday special trains had been started to cope with the rush of tourists arriving to the town on the Delhi-Kalka Shatabdi and Himalyan Queen trains.

Meanwhile, hundreds of passengers from Delhi, Haryana and Punjab today were disappointed on not getting a seat in any of the trains. They had to travel by road instead. Some of the passengers said the Railways should increase the number of general compartments, so that tourists wanting to travel on toy trains could enjoy the journey.

Standard Chartered Bank penalised Rs 5,000
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 15
The Chandigarh Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed Standard Chartered Bank to pay Rs 5,000 as compensation to the complainant. The complainant, Rajesh Garg, stated that the bank had levied charges for providing the status of 'privileged customer'.

Though the bank, where the complainant maintained an account, reversed the money deducted on request, the forum held the bank deficient in rendering proper service.

The complainant had opened an account at the Standard Chartered Bank. In November 2011, the bank deducted an amount of Rs 1654.50 from his account. On enquiring, the complainant learnt that keeping in view the quantum of deposits, his account was treated as 'privileged customer account' and since he did not maintain certain minimum balance, the amount was deducted.

The bank later reversed the amount in the complainant's account in March 2012 when the complainant clarified that he had never applied for any such status. However, the same amount was again deducted from his account and was later reversed.

The opposite party maintained that the amount was refunded into the complainant's account as a goodwill gesture. The complainant, however, said this was never communicated to him.

Since both the times the amount was reversed into the complainant's account, the bank might attract leniency, observed the forum.
