Heart’s calling
Police officials and Bureaucrats have much up their sleeve and their usual day is choc-a-bloc. Yet there are some who are passionate enough to find out time for the things they love most…
Jasmine Singh

They had a choice to bury themselves behind the stack of files that needs to be cleared almost each day; a choice to hang their boots after a tiring, grilling day at work. They still have a choice to go on with their life the way it is, without spreading their wings. Had they limited themselves, these bureaucrats and IPS officers from the Tricity wouldn’t have another version to themselves. It is because of their hobbies that they stretch out from the 24x7 on-duty calls, finding a vent and a new meaning. We catch up with some.

Sky bound
Viswajeet Khanna, Principal Secretary, Defence Service Welfare

Flying is his passion, the sky a canvas that opens to a new possibility and challenge at the same time. He has read the author Richard Bach a lot. “I haven’t attained the spirituality that he has,” laughs the officer, “but yes I relate to his passion to fly.”

Gift of wings: He took a fondness to it much before his service. “In service, I wouldn’t miss a chance to be up in the cockpit; I would fly down to receive any VIP myself,” he says smiling throughout.

Sit back: Flying allows me to relax and now whenever I pass through a place that has a flying club I like to fly,” adds the man who has first solo on a Pushpak and later endorsed Cessna 152, Bonanza 835 and other planes in Punjab.

Verse friendly
Ramendra Jakhu, Additional Chief Secretary, Forests, Haryana

Despite his schedule, his heart takes a flight to pull out some thoughts flying in the air. He brings them down and weaves them beautifully in his Urdu poetry.

Pen right: He has written books on Urdu poetry; he sings ghazals, a passion that he has kept alive since his college days. His renditions at mushairas organised both at international and national levels have been recognised by the audience as the real voice of the contemporary genre of 'ghazals'. “Writing is not just about conceiving an idea, it has to be given a definitive shape as well,” he shares. Ramendra has already two documentaries made on him and his work. “I am not into laboured poetry, which is why I can handle work and my passion. I write when I feel like.”

Riding high
Naunihal Singh, SSP, Chandigarh

At any given point of time, this immaculate, well-spoken officer is either sorting out cases or listening to people who pour out their problems. This can go on endlessly, but he makes a conscious effort to find time for what interest him.

Noble animal: “I am passionate about horse-riding. I have painted horses when I was young. I have been to various animal fairs and only seen my fondness for the animal grow. It is such a noble animal and being with it only makes a person compassionate; evokes empathy and confidence.” As part of the training also, Naunihal Singh goes for horse-riding every morning.

Sky is the limit: Flying is another passion that he pursues as and when he has time. A qualified pilot, he has flown across India; Jaipur, Khajuraho, Lucknow and Bhopal. “I intend to pursue it further as well, as it an upcoming thing in policing. My endeavour is to provide better policing in India and this is my higher goal,” he shares.

Creative streak
Rajbir Deswal, Commissioner of Police, Ambala and Panchkula

Thoughts and ideas do not hit him like a hurricane; they just keep flowing in his head, sometimes as rapids and sometimes as peaceful streams. The net result is seen in the number of words that bind together in the various books that he has written. “Writing is a passion that comes fairly naturally,” adds the officer, who has also written columns in various newspapers and magazines.

Writing is something that keeps his sanity intact. “The ideas in my memory sometimes come down from a subconscious to a conscious level through writing.” He hardly sleeps at best for five hours; this routine is, however, never a deterrent in the creative process.

Short take
Shalini Bhargava Kaushal, Additional Commissioner of Income Tax

With whatever time she has, Shalini spends it on reading these days. Coming from a literary background, it was natural for her to take up writing. Work left no space for anything, but Shalini kept her passion for writing short stories alive.

“I like writing short stories. They are not autobiographical, still sometimes the experiences at work finds way into the story,” she smiles making sure she writes more. This passion for her is like a breather, something she would want to return to more often.

A different cut
Gurgaon-based designer Suman Bharti’s clothes are hugely inspired from the Gothic period in history
Manpriya Singh

The world of fashion is infinite; there’s a place and space for every name and the ideas grow by the exponent. Gurgaon-based designer Suman Bharti hopped onto the bandwagon, hoping to cash-in on the sea of possibilities and endless permutations that the fashion industry had to offer. “My brand Vintage Goth stands for the values of commitment to comfort, elegance and authenticity. And these are the key points in my mind. Plus my designs are for the woman of today. In the past few years we have seen huge transformation in the women’s apparel segment. Women want to experiment and dress differently,” shares the graduate from Pearl Academy of Fashion, on his brand philosophy during the launch of spring-summer collection.

He’s been the exploring the market in contemporary design and corsetry. “Gothic period was a resurgence of sorts, not just politically but in terms of social culture as well. It was a time of great upheaval, away from the usual and mainstream. And that is what my brand Vintage Goth stands for.” It’s a conscious effort to depart from the conventional. He shares, “We are working with Victorian influenced old rose prints, floral prints, butterfly prints. In terms of fabrics, we are working with brocades, poly satin, poly dupion, chiffon, georgette.”

The collection comprises floral print range, cocktail dresses, corset and bustier sarees. “The floral print range has a timeless old world charm due to the exquisite prints of butterflies, flora and fauna and peacocks, among others.” While the cocktail range claims to make the wearer, “a red carpet diva,” the corset and bustier sarees, lends a traditional twist to corsets and bustiers by introducing sarees, which come along with Corset and Bustier as blouse. “These ready-to-wear sarees have a mermaid skirt and are made of fabrics that make them apt for weddings or black-tie events.”

Starting 2001, it’s been over a decade of being in the retail industry, so there’s a lot to exchange notes on, “As an industry we have evolved. We use a blend of technology and Indian culture to create globe-trotting collections. This speaks volumes about the industry.”

There’s a departure from the mainstream thought process, he “doesn’t think” that prêt –a-porter dilutes the creativity of haute couture and “nor is there any specific” design icon who he admires, neither in the Indian markets and nor on the international front.

Romancing the vintage trunk
Sukhmani

Trunks were once a necessity for travellers but quickly faded when less expensive and easier to move luggage made its appearance. Since then they have become a great interior decorating accessory. If you have an old trunk or a vintage luggage, use it in the house in creative ways and see the appreciation you get.

Trunks were made in a large variety of shapes and sizes and from many materials and date back to pre-medieval times. The earliest trunks were rather primitive and date to the late 1700s. They were made of various woods and covered with hides such as deer, seal skin, horse, or cowhide. By the early 1800s the hide covered trunks continued and became a little more ornamented with handmade brass tacks, forged iron locks and handles and leather trim.

From new vintage-inspired cigar leather trunks to broken-in well travelled luggage pieces or old world heritage timber trunks. A decorative trunk can make any space look elegant; it can give individual style, flair and a pretty storage space.

There are lots of ingenious and creative ways for using a vintage trunk--

Bed end bench: Trunks make excellent bed end benches. Chose one that suits your decor, or better still, decorate your room according to the vintage piece. Its functional use can be to store your pillows and blankets.

Coffee table: Trunks can be used as coffee tables in the living room. They can be an exquisite accent piece and, since it's usually placed in the centre of the room, they would also make a great focal point. If you want to use a dark wood finish trunk as a coffee table, make sure to keep the furnishings light/pastel coloured so as to make it stand out.

Bedside table: A beautiful trunk can also be used as a nightstand if it has the right dimensions and shape. Place it in the bedroom near the bed and you have an original nightstand. Add a couple of vintage decorative pillows on the bed and you have a cosy bedroom that looks unique.

Whimsical tables: If you have two or more similar small vintage trunks or luggage, add four legs to them and convert them into a set of fancy tables.

If you have a beautiful vintage trunk you can even use it as a purely decorative piece. It doesn't have to be repurposed as a bedside table, coffee table, nightstand or anything else. Just use it as a place to display a few decorations and place it in the hallway or somewhere where everyone can see it and admire it.

stress buster
Finding your own path
Renee Singh

Learning to respond in a balanced appropriate fashion to events is a key skill in fighting stress. A so called bad day in your life is just that and nothing beyond. You obviously cannot control events but you definitely can control your reactions to them.

Modifying behaviour

Often in times of stress behavioural patterns which are deeply imbedded in our psyche come up to the surface and we start acting and reacting accordingly. Many a time situations at home or at work make you feel uncomfortable but you take no action to change it. You find the resentment building up and this is reflected in your behaviour. You could actually become unreasonably angry or intolerant of other people's behaviour.

We have to learn to find inner balance, overcome inappropriate behaviour by analysing the feelings of unfairness. Try to discover and deal with the root of the problem. Do not ignore problems, acknowledge them as they arise.

Your rights

1You have the right to make genuine mistakes and not feel guilty about it.

2We are only human, trying to be good and right constantly can take a huge toll on our personalities and this is one of the major causes of stress. So don't feel guilty even if you realise you have made a mistake.

3Mistakes are a part of your learning process. Analyse what went wrong, correct the error and avoid repeating it. You have to also remember that no one is perfect, so don't be too hard on yourself.

4You have the right to say no to other people's excessive demands on your time. Say it graciously. To lead a balanced life you need to establish your own priorities, standards and rights and be willing to take responsibility for your actions.

Handling anger

Anger in itself is a disabling emotion and it produces measurable physical sensations such as increase in pulse rate and a rise in blood pressure. An explosion of anger does give you a momentary sense of relief but it disguises the real problem and simply turns into and becomes a problem in itself.

If you explode unreasonably at a person, question the root of the problem. You could find an answer by making a list of possible reasons. Learning to control your anger by exploring its causes will bring down your levels of stress immensely.

Think positively

To maintain a calm, balanced low stress environment you must learn to train yourself to think positively. A positive approach to all situations in life attracts a positive response from the people and situations you are dealing with. It helps us to remain in control even under immense pressure.

Try not to be pressurised into decision making in a hurry. Think calmly and arrive at your conclusions at leisure.

Reaching a level of balance within is of course something everyone craves for but then one also has to realise that we ourselves have to take the challenge of changing our perspectives to relieve our stress.

Physical activity like a good walk, yoga and general exercise is a solution to stress also and does help in creating inner balance. Meditation, listening to music, visualising pleasant scenarios and thinking happy thoughts are all positive contributors.

Find your own personal path to reaching balance within and feel joy taking over every aspect of your life.

Keep it subtle

At times, bad make up can be worse than a shoe bite. A foundation that washes down to the collars till you look like a sportsperson in junior high and kohl running down the eyes till you appear like a werewolf that eats everything up on a moonlit night.

It takes neither long nor a lot to get a set of eyes that look picture perfect for summers. Make up icon Bobbi Brown has always sworn by the no-sweat sheer make up to last you in heat and humidity.

Her latest make up introductions for the summer of 2013, called Nude Beach Collection draws on the golden browns and sunlight gold in sheer finish. The make up for eyes is water resistant and blendable. Back home, Ambika Pillai for this season, has advocated "clean fresh eyes with a hint of colour on the lips. There should either be a pop of colour on the eyes or the lips."

What the artists say

Keeping things simple and subtle is a great way to enhance one's natural beauty and draw attention to the eyes. A nude coloured eye shadow with a hint of shimmer brings a sparkle. Skipping the eye-liner and opting for double coated mascara is an option too. Tanvi KG of I Style Makeovers emphasises on the smudge proof eye make up for summers. "During summers, people tend to wipe their faces very often. Make up should be such that can stand the test of sweat and is non oily." She adds, "Gel liners are a great way to begin with and counter the problems of oiliness and sweat." As for the smoky look, "I think that's a complete no for summers, at least during the day. Instead of too much on the eyes, apply a bright lip colour." For someone who's ready to get too adventurous there are neon gel liners. The smoky eye might be here to stay but doesn't get a nod from the city based artists. Opines Antara Dhamija, make-up artist with a city based salon, "If at all, one goes for a smokey eye, it should be in nudes and browns." She adds, "A hint of shimmer, base colour palette, sweat proof products should make you look like a summer queen."

Emraan Hashmi comes of age

Emraan Hashmi's Ghanchakkar is getting ready for release and this movie is unlike anything he has ever done before. He talks about the promos of the sequel to Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai and dancing in Ghanchakkar.

Film fraternity: Emraan Hashmi

The big change

I have not built a brand out of me like my colleagues. My popularity is limited to my films. So far, it has worked for me. In the past three years, my career has got a big boost and I have gone places, literally. My films would do well but I was not counted in the race of actors. Now I am considered a bankable actor and a hero and so many big films have come my way. I have figures to back my claims and I do films outside the Bhatt camp too.

A suitable role

The character of Shoaib changed my fortunes. I have seen the promos of the sequel to the movie. The movie changed my life. I do not think about such things. If the makers felt they wanted an older actor to do the movie, it is fine. It is a valid call. I cannot talk about how it felt about being replaced because actors get attached to the characters and we play them with our heart and soul.

On the dance floor

I tried dancing in my earlier films but it was like struggling to stay afloat when thrown into the water. I am comfortable shaking a leg now than I was ever before. But left to my own devices, I would rather avoid the whole thing. I am currently shooting a Sufiana song called Allah Meherban for Ghanchakkar. It is a qawwali number and quite fun.

On Ghanchakkar

Vidya Balan and I are working again in Ghanchakkar after The Dirty Picture. There are some shades reminiscent of TDP. In this movie, Vidya and I play a couple who love each other but are also at each other's throats. They want to make the relationship work. The movie has very real marriage problems. The couple is at loggerheads most of the time.

Stirring drama and commotion

In the up and coming episodes of Diya Aur Baati Hum, Bhabho (Neelu Vaghela) puts Sandhya (Deepika Singh) to test. So what do the viewers have in store this time? As per the ongoing track, Bhabho had told Sandhya that she will pursue her study for IPS exams only if she does not make any mistakes in the house till her next birthday. To keep a track of her mistakes, Bhabho keeps three mud pots in the house.

Testing times: Deepika Singh

Why just three pots? Three pots are a symbol of three chances that Sandhya gets to make mistakes and if she exceeds the three chances, she will have to stop studying further. And Bhabho will break a pot at every mistake that she makes.

Sadly, Sandhya has already made her first mistake and is now left with only two more chances. Now, Sandhya will come across something that will dishearten her and she will decide on making mistakes on purpose. She finds out that Bhabho had fed liquor chocolates to Sandhya just a day before her exams, so that she fails to reach the examination hall.

Our source says, "She will realise that Bhabho will never be happy with her studies. This is when she will decide to make mistakes on her own to help Bhabho succeed in her mission."

In fact, in the upcoming episodes, Sandhya will be seen taking the blame of rats entering into Suraj's (Anas Rashid) shop, in spite of knowing that Emily (Pooja Singh), Chavi (Shehrish Ali) and Meenakshi (Kanica Maheshwari) had entered his shop and one of them had left the door open.

‘I look for the impact of a role’
Zarina Wahab
Worth the while: Zarina Wahab

After proving her talent in many movies and television shows, Zarina Wahab will enter the popular show, Madhubala that is telecast on Colors. During a candies conversation with the Life+Style, the actor shares that she looks for the impact of the role and not it's length.

Tell us something about your role in the show, Madhubala.

In the show, I essay the role of Sultan's mother, who is mentally unstable because of a tragedy. My character, Meera, had an affair with RK's deceased father and did not know he was a married man. Meera could never overcome the trauma of RK giving Sultan away to his driver and she hates RK and his family. Meanwhile, that Sultan and RK are step brothers will bring a big twist in the story.

Why did you choose to do this role?

I enjoy doing emotional roles and I am looking forward to it. This role has many shades and I am happy with the show and this new twist.

Earlier, in Yahaan Mein Ghar Ghar Kheli, you played the role of a mentally unstable woman. Is your role similar to the one that you will be essaying now?

No, that was very different. My character had an accident due to which she loses her memory and behaves like a child. That was a very tough role to enact.

We have seen you in a very few films. What kind of film offers do you get?

I get many offers, but I only take up the ones that are different and interesting. I have recently done a Malyalam film. I don't go by the length of the role. For instance, in the film, My Name Is Khan, my role was a short one, but it was noticed rather well and it even got me an award. So, I look for the impact of the role, be it TV or films.

Which was the last television show that you enjoyed watching?

I hardly get to watch television, but I really enjoyed watching shows like Kasauti Zindagi Kay and Smriti Irani's Virrudh.
