3 drug peddlers held
Fatehgarh Sahib, June 4 Gurmeet Singh Chauhan, SSP, said the CIA staff, Sirhind had erected a check post at the Bhakra Canal Bridge at the Sanipur road, Sirhind. The police asked a car to stop for checking. During the search, the police found a bag containing poppy husk. As the police was taking them into custody, two of them managed to flee. The police chased them, but could not nab them. One of their companions was arrested. He was identified as Daljeet Singh, alias Jiti, a resident of Mandi Gobindgarh. The two accused, who managed to flee from the spot, were identified as Rajesh Kumar, alias Kaka, a resident of Sirhind, and Ashok Kumar Bansal, a resident of Mandi Gobindgarh. The SSP said the accused would be arrested soon. Meanwhile, the CIA staff arrested Saveer, alias Golu, a resident of Brahman Majra, Sirhind, near Star Resort Sirhind and recovered 8 gm smack from his possession. He used to supply smack to the youth. In another incident, the CIA staff, Mandi Gobindgarh, arrested Jagroop Singh, alias Soni, a resident of Khanna, and recovered 8,000 intoxicant tablets from his custody. He used to supply tablets to the petty peddlers in the rural area. The SSP said all the peddlers had been booked under the NDPS Act. |
Cricket tournament
Patiala, June 4 In the first match, BECC won the toss and piled up the highest score of the tournament ( 392 for 5 in 40 overs). Ibadat (111), Jagjit Dass (100), Atma Ram (50), Lovdeep (40) and Jaspreet Singh (29) were main scorers from BECC. Ibadat and Jagjit Dass were at their best while out on batting. They displayed great short selection during their batting. In reply, Cantt XI was bundled out for a paltry 68 runs, following a deadly spell by Rajnesh Pandey. He claimed 3 wickets for 21 runs. |

Youth acquitted of rape charge
Chandigarh, June 4 Her parents reported to the police that she had been kidnapped by accused Ashok Kumar from a bus stop in Maloya. The accused worked as a tracking guide. The girl was later recovered from Dharamsala by the police and the accused was then arrested. While recording the evidence in court, the victim stated that she was emotionally blackmailed to go along with the accused. However, during her cross examination, the girl stated that the accused did not take her forcibly thus resulting in his acquittal. The court stated in the judgment that the accused had the consent of the girl when she went with him so it could not be called rape. |

Brawl outside discotheque leaves one hurt in Sector 26
Chandigarh, June 4 In his statement to the police, Om Parkash alleged that Ankush, a resident of Sector 45, along with his accomplices, attacked him over the issue of parking of cars. The complainant said the attackers were in a white-coloured I-20 car (CH-01-AR-8373). The police said the incident occurred after the youngsters came out of the discotheque. They had an altercation when the i20 car was being driven out of the parking space. The verbal spat turned ugly, following which the youngsters in the i20 car allegedly attacked the complainant with rods and swords. Om Parkash was admitted with serious injuries to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16. A case of attempt to murder has been registered under Sections 308, 325 and 34 of the IPC at Sector 26 police station. The police said attempts were on to nab the accused.
Miscreants snatch cash, phone
Two miscreants snatched a mobile phone and Rs 10,000 from a Sector 36 resident. The victim, Sunil Kumar, said the incident happened near the dividing road between Sectors 42 and 43. Sunil, who was riding a cycle, was on his way to a bank to deposit the cash. Around 10.30 am, two pedestrians came from the rear side and fled with the cash and mobile phone, the police said.

country-made pistol
A person was arrested for possessing a country-made pistol and cartridges. A case under Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act has been registered against the accused, Vishwash Kumar of Sector 52, at Sector 36 police station. Vishwash Kumar was arrested from a park in Sector 52 yesterday. The police recovered .32 bore country-made pistol with magazine and two live cartridges without any licence or permit from him.
Pedestrian injured
A pedestrian was badly injured on being hit by a rashly driven vehicle on the Sectors 2 and 11 dividing road here today. The victim was admitted to the PGI. The police said the victim was unfit to record his statement. He appears to be around 18 years of age. A tattoo with the name of Krishna was found on his right arm. An eyewitness, who called the police control room, reported that a white-coloured Punjab Police Gypsy had hit the pedestrian, before fleeing. A case under Sections 279 and 337 of the IPC was registered at the Sector 3 police station. |

Chandigarh, June 4 PU Registrar AK Bhandari said the police department had sought a copy of the inquiry report for its ongoing investigation in the case, and it would be provided to it in the coming days. The committee was headed by Dean Student Welfare (Women), Prof Kalpana K Mahajan. The committee concluded that the evidence on record, oral, written and documentary, established that the incidents of sexual harassment alleged by the complainant at UBS, against two professors, also from UBS, could not be substantiated. The report was submitted to the Vice-Chancellor. Prof AK Vashisht, UBS chairman, and Prof Dinesh Gupta were booked by the Chandigarh Police on the charge of sexual harassment last month. |

Thieves decamp with Rs 4.80 lakh, laptops
Chandigarh, June 4 The thieves also damaged the two CCTV cameras and stole the hard disks of the two computer sets from one of the plots, in which a branded garment clothes store is running. The incident occurred around 3am. Jatinder Kumar, owner of the garment industrial plot, said, “Though the thieves damaged the CCTV cameras, still the image of one of them was captured on the camera and it hasbeen handed over to the local police.” Apart from stealing Rs 30,000 cash from the garment industrial plot, four branded man jackets along with other accessories were also stolen. A watchman was sleeping on the ground floor of the garment industrial plot. |

Youth ends his life
Chandigarh, June 4 The victim, Ranvijay, was rushed to hospital at 4 am. He died in the evening at the PGI. He had consumed deadly poison cellphos. No suicide note was found at the spot. Victim’s family told the police that he was suffering from depression for quite some time, following a failed love affair.
