From being a debut actor last year to a double role in Aurangzeb, how has the journey been? When people compare Ishaqzaade to Aurangzeb, they will notice the difference in the roles that I have essayed in the movies. It would be unfair to say that in both of them I have played the role of a youth who is angry at the system or depicts the angst of the youth. The setting of my earlier movie was a small town whereas the backdrop of Aurangzeb is urban. Moreover, I have a double role in the recent release, so there’s definitely more to these two roles than meets the eye! Tell us about your experience of sharing space with seasoned actors and a debutante. In Aurangzeb, actors like Rishi Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Deepti Naval, Amrita Singh have come together. Sharing screen space with them has indeed been a great learning experience. If my debut movie was my schooling in the film industry, then this experience has surely been my graduation! Even observing these stars of Indian cinema take their shots helps you enrich your acting. Their dedication, subtle understanding of nuanced cinema and elements of the craft are enough to guide you. I am sure Sasheh Aga, who debuts in the movie, must have done the same too. What kind of advice did your father give? As one grows up, one learns from one’s own experiences, surroundings and the happenings around. But surely, before I embarked upon my cinematic journey, my father (Boney Kapoor) didn’t really sit down with me and give handy tips on the career. Like any other father, he told me to be honest with my work and give it whatever I have got to the art! What kind of preparation did you do for the role? Aurangzeb has been a great learning experience. I played a double role for the first time. The depiction of both these characters is something I enjoyed thoroughly. The only preparation I did for my role was spending a lot of time with Atul Sabharwal, the director, and understanding his vision. My earlier stint as an assistant director has helped enrich my understanding of the craft too. I am very excited about the upcoming movie based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel Two States for which my beard has also come off. I hope the audiences enjoy the movie and the like my look!
