Unlike other fruits, the fruits of jaboticaba (Myrciaria cauliflora) are not borne on leaf axils or shoot terminals. Instead, these are borne directly on the bark of trunk, main limbs and branches. The tree, which has a light brown bark, presents a very unusual look with dark purple fruits covering the trunk and limbs. Jaboticaba is a native of Brazil and it is widely cultivated there for its fruits which are of the size of small plums and taste somewhat like grapes.
