Uploading pictures on social networking sites is no longer the same. Some youngsters hold special photo-shoots for their online profiles...

Let's admit it; we are all, to some extent, a bunch of narcissists. For what is humility, but an indirect boast! If your thoughts are still not in tune with the idea, we suggest you log into your Facebook account and analyse the pompous show of self-obsession in the profile pictures of your friends, relatives and even you for that matter!

It's a social dilemma; you've got to look good to be appreciated, to get those Facebook likes and compliments that will leave you in high spirits. We are all, after all, social beings!

Fashion funda

Now there's a very strange undercurrent that defines narcissism on a rather optimistic note, even as the young brigade takes to fashionable photo-shoots while uploading them on social networking sites. Danish Gill, 21, is extremely excited about getting her photoshoot done and she reasons her intentions while engaging in an interesting conversation, "I like getting myself clicked so that when I grow old, I can show my grandchildren how I looked when I was young. Pictures serve as memory banks; I am saving memories of me."

Chirpy and lively Danish adds, "When Bani Seth, a photographer and a friend, asked me to get a photo-shoot I was more than keen; I picked up my make-up kit, a few dresses that I had bought from New Zeeland, a saree and was ready to go. After the shoot, I had people asking me if I was interested in acting. Moreover, my friends really liked the photographs."

Sharing a similar story, Kudrat Choudhary, 19, who is currently studying law, says, "Photography to me is an art that brings out a very different side of you, so I wanted to see that side of me. Initially I was a little nervous but when I looked at my photograph, I was awestruck as I looked so different. I didn't spend any money since a friend of mine, Bani, did my photo-shoot and her mother helped me with the make-up. I was wearing a peplum dress by Charlotte Rousse and another dress by Forever 21 for the shoot," she says.

Abhinav Jain, 20, a Ludhiana lad, who is presently pursuing his graduation in International Business, shares, "I got my shoot done from a friend, Tushar Bhardwaj, who is also a photographer. I have flaunted my dad's 22-year-old limited edition Ray Ban shades and a Burberry shirt. Also, by virtue of this photo-shoot I have received a lot of friend requests and also a lot of Facebook messages, with beautiful compliments flowing in from even those who don't know me."

Behind the lens

Bani Seth, 18, shares, "Firstly, I am really fond of clicking my own pictures and probably that kindled my interest in mainly fashion photography. I started with it a year ago and I do a lot of fashion shoots for my friends; I don't charge because I enjoy my work. I'll take this up professionally once I get done with my photography course, for which I'll be going to London soon."

Following the trend, Anupreet Sidhu, who has a Facebook page by the name of Sidhu Ji also likes clicking people as well as herself, "Well my idea of starting up with this page was to propel my career as a stylist and fashion designer. I upload my new designs on Facebook to get the pulse of the youth so that I can start with my own online fashion label under the name, Sidhu Ji." Anupreet also offers fashion advice through her Facebook page, "I cater to as many as 300 to 400 messages each day."

Tryst with big screen
Tanya Malhotra

After a fruitful innings on television, Dhriti Saharan is coming up with movies in different languages…

While singing, dancing and television shows were just the beginning, Dhriti Saharan has now imprinted her acting talent on the big screen through the horizons of Punjabi, Telugu and Bengali movies. The biggest news that has hit the industry is the ban that has been lifted from her movie Sadda Haq. Along with that, she awaits the release of her Punjabi-Bengali bilingual Teri Meri Ik Jindri with Partho Ghosh and another Telugu film Love Touch with Jayant is set for a release soon.

You might remember her from Boogie Woogie, Kya Masti Kya Dhoom, Aao Jhoomein Gaayien, Har Dil Jo Love Karega, Footloose, Kisme Kitna Hai Dum and of course, Indian Idol. Now that's just the television part! She sings and dances too, professionally. Dhriti has been busy recording for Sony BMG albums with Krishna Beura and Raman Mahadevan. She has also recorded her voice in Khatron ke Khiladi.

Filmy world

"I used to look at myself in the mirror; my expression while eating, smiling or even crying. While I chose engineering as a profession I just couldn't let the filmi keeda out of my head. I just knew I had to follow my dreams. And the journey till now has been fantastic." Talking about her roles, it has definitely been a roller-coaster ride for Dhriti. While she debuted with her role in the movie Pure Punjabi, she has surely come a long way!

"From playing the role of a rich brat to being a sensitive woman, my roles in each movie have been poles apart. I also sang a song Dil Musafir in Sadda Haq, but it's only used for promotions." And what kind of roles is she looking at in future? "My expectations from future are a notch higher now. I am looking for a good script. I would love to do a peppy role like that of Kareena Kapoor or Priyanka Chopra."

In demand

"I have nothing against item numbers or Punjabi lyrics; the directors and composers make only what sells and it works with the public. But yes, when it comes to the influence on children, it's a matter of concern. It's important to keep it entertaining and classy at the same time. I did an item number Billo thumka in the Punjabi flick Pinky Moge Wali, which was a superhit."

When the actress is not on a set, she loves to sing, dance, travel and meditate, "And how can I forget shopping? I like to live a simple life with my family. I also love to spend time with my pet mouse, Robin. Everybody at my home is a pet-lover."

"My hobby is my profession now. So I thoroughly enjoy what I do," she signs off.

GET PHYSICAL
Workout anytime, anywhere
Anil Juneja

Even if your are holidaying or if it is frequent travelling for business or nothing but sheer paucity of time....let there be no escape from your fitness routine! For the ones who do not want to miss on their fitness schedule while travelling or for those who want a quick, safe, easy and effective workout remedy at home, there is one sure shot solution: Sun salutation aka surya namaskar.

Sun Salutation, the ancient yogic practise of prostrating to the Sun Lord, is a combination of twelve powerful yogic postures that work on all the fitness components namely strength, flexibility, stamina and stability. In fact, it is a complete body work out that can be done anywhere and anytime. The best part about it is that it does not require any specialised area (gym or fitness studio) or any heavy equipment. Just find a comfortable corner at the side of your hotel room or some space at that serene sea side, and in next 20 to 30 minutes you are done with a perfect and complete exercise regime.

As a beginner, you may not be able to bring that synchronisation of breath and body movement, but with continuous practice you will coordinate both and take it to a higher level. Let us now learn the series step by step:

Make sure to stand at the front of the mat to leave room behind for the subsequent steps:

1 Pranam asana: Exhale as you bring both your hands in prayer position in front of your heart.

2 Hast uttan asana: Start to inhale as your arms stretches up and backwards, letting your chest wide open and abdominals getting stretched without dropping your head back.

3 Padhasta asana: Begin to exhale as you bend forward. While doing so keep your back, arms and legs straight and bend down from your waist as far as possible. Try to bring your hands flat on the floor.

4 Ashwa sanchalan asana: Now as you inhale, stretch your right leg back and look up. Make sure that the left knee and left are in same line.

5 Ardha chaturanga dandasana: Holding the breath, take the other leg back as well and balance your entire body on toes and hands. Align your legs, hips, back, head and neck in one straight diagonal.

6 Ashthanga namaskar: Now exhale and lower your knees, chest and forehead on the mat while keeping your hips raised up.

7 Bhujanga asana: Start to inhale and lift your head and then chest up. Look up and arch your head and spine backwards.

8 Parvata asana: Now breathe out and lift the hips and tail bone up while straightening the arms and pushing the body backwards.

9 Ashwa sanchalan asana: Inhale and step your right leg forward in between your hands and look up. ( Position no. 4 and 9 is similar)

10 Padhasta aasana: Start to exhale and bring your left leg forward as well, aligning the toes and finger tips in one line and bending forward. ( Position no. 3 and 10 is similar)

11 Hast uttan asana: Start to inhale and lift your arms and spine upward until you arch them backwards. ( Position no. 2 and 11 is similar)

12 Tada asana: Start to exhale and lower your arms down. Stand upright with your body weight equally distributed on both feet.

Repeat the same sequence with the left leg so as to finish one complete set.

Big switch

Many Bollywood celebrities have lost considerable weight to look as glamorous or good as they do today. Here are some inspiring examples.

Sonakshi Sinha

She was a fashion designing student and highly overweight. Salman Khan was her angel and asked her to shape up and become an actress. He cast her in Dabangg when she lost weight and the rest is history. Sonakshi is not thin by any standards but she is a healthy Indian girl and her desi image works for her. She has to watch what she eats and workout as well.

Sonam Kapoor

She is super hot, pretty and stylish today but there was a time when she was fat and used to wear tacky clothes. A lot of hard work went in for her to lose weight and get fit but the efforts have paid off and she looks amazing! She indulges in her favourite chocolate treats from time to time and has a heavy lunch on Sundays. The workouts keep her in shape as she loves to eat.

Alia Bhatt

She has been a pleasantly plump and pampered teenager with a pretty face. It worked fine for her till she was cast in Student of The Year and had to slim down for her role. Karan Johar gave her a few months to get in shape. She did that and even flaunted her new sexy figure in a bikini and looked good. She is fit now and exudes confidence.

Parineeti Chopra

She was nearly 90 kilos when she was in college. She did not care and was happy wolfing down pizzas. She had to get in shape for her debut in Ladies vs Ricky Bahl and has maintained a healthy weight at around 60 kg and has no desire to be skinny. She has had to give up her favourite pizza.

Arjun Kapoor

He was a fat kid and continued to be so when he grew up. He wanted to be behind the scenes so looks did not matter. Salman Khan motivated him to get in shape and become an actor. He followed his advice and has showed off his chiselled physique in both his movies and even posed topless for magazines. He is a big fitness freak now.

Stressbuster
Slow & steady
Renee Singh

We are what we eat. Convenience food is something we start filling our stomach with when we are under stress. This is also synonymous with junk food eating. If we want to reduce our stress levels then eating well must be a part of a serious program .Every morsel we are consuming is leaving a certain impact on our mind and body.

Sometimes without realising stress takes over our lives in such a way that food becomes our inherent comfort zone. Just chilling over a nice ice cream sundae or even indulging in a nice burger or pizza gives such a joy. I'm not saying you should give up on your gourmet delights either, it's just that a little bit of care on over indulgence is a must.

Reducing bad habits

Monitoring what you consume and the timing of your eating habits is very essential. We seem to eat wrong foods quite often, and many a time our eating timing is not correct, all these little habits have an impact on our stress level. The one drink in the evening becomes a couple of drinks and the once a week pizza becomes a daily affair. Try making a well balanced diet schedule and sticking on to it. Also replace convenience food with certain foods which are considered healthy.

Certain foods have been linked with poor overall health. Avoid food which is high in saturated fats such as meats cheese and butter products. Try a soya meal instead of meat, tastes great and is a healthier option. Reduce your daily caffeine dose by drinking either decaffeinated tea or coffee or supplement it with juice. A minimum of 8 glasses of water is a must.

Dos and dont's

  • Eat small meals at regular intervals rather than one huge lunch or dinner.
  • Set yourself an optimum weight target and stick on to it.
  • Aim for moderation in all things.
  • Daily intake of vitamins and minerals is important. This keeps the body feeling well and the mind easy and relaxed.
  • Proteins in the form of amino acids are essential. Cell growth, repair happens through the intake of proteins. These are required for making anti bodies.
  • Carbohydrates in terms of sugar and starch make up 55 pre cent of a healthy diet recommended by nutritionists.
  • Fats are basic energy units and cannot be ignored completely. The body needs a certain amount of fat to function efficiently. A healthy diet includes 30 per cent fat but please don't go overboard on it.
  • Proteins from plants and animals are equally important and must be consumed in a balanced fashion.

Green thumb
Water management
Satish Narula

The temperature is soaring with every passing day and the plants need more water. It depends on the type of plants and how these are planted, whether in pots, soil or baskets. You have to fix priorities. Different types of plants are there in the garden. Some are fruit trees, in bearing, and there are vegetables too in the kitchen garden. Even their watering needs are different. There are plants in soil or in pots and even in baskets. The plants in pots are also of different nature. Some may need water everyday whereas others may skip a few days. You have to understand their need.

You learn by experience and for the beginners, here is the ready reference for fruit trees like litchi, mango, lemon, pomegranate, grapes, peach, plum and pear. Those which are in bearing should be given a good amount of water at three day's interval. So is the case with lemon and pomegranate but in these cases, unlike peach and plum, the watering should be light. Otherwise there will be dropping of flowers and fruit. There may be splitting of fruit too. This happens when a gap in watering is followed by copious watering. In case of litchi the reason for splitting of fruit is altogether different. It is due to the lack of water. Litchi is a heavy drinker when in fruiting stage. Give full water at least twice a week in the basin that should be made as wide as the spread of the tree. Dehradun cultivar of litchi is more prone to splitting than Calcuttia. In case of mango and pear, however, you can keep the frequency to 10 to 15 days. Grapes are again shallow rooted and need water frequently. Keep these watering at five days interval.

In case of summer vegetables as in case of various cucurbits like kaddu, kheera, chappan kadu, lauki, tinda etc the watering is done in channels and the vine is spread on a dry patch. This not only conserves moisture but also saves the fruit from rotting due to direct contact with water in the summer heat. The frequency in this case too is kept at twice a week. Karela vine is trained on some support and if nothing is handy, a few dry twigs are kept under the vine to keep the fruit and vine raised so that these do no come in direct contact with water.

A woman of many hats

Actress Tanishaa Mukerji seems to be following the footsteps of her grandfather S Mukherji's as we hear that the actress has stepped into the business side of films.

Our source informs us, "Tanishaa has been working with her brother in law Ajay Devgan and had produced the recent hit Son of Sardaar. She has also been instrumental recently in having Ajay sign two huge deals with Dabur, which the brand seems to be extremely happy about. Tanishaa's business sense is remarkable and she seems to be extremely passionate about learning the ropes of production."

When we asked Tanishaa about her recent entry into business she says, "Production has been in our family for years and I am really enjoying the business side of things. I love learning about the ropes behind the scenes as its all under one umbrella and interlinked. But my first love and passion will always remain acting."
