Driver burnt alive as trucks collide
Banur, May 26 The driver of other truck was also injured in the accident. He was rushed to a hospital in Banur in critical condition. The deceased has been identified as Balwinder Singh, a resident of Manwala, district Sangrur. He was coming from Barnala by loading rice which was to be delivered in a nearby liquor factory. Suddenly, another truck that was coming from the Chandigarh side hit this truck and immediately, a fire broke out in which Balwinder was charred to death. Later, the police reached on the spot and accident victims were shifted to a hospital. The body of the victim was handed over to his relatives after conducting the postmortem mortem. Gopoal Singh, driver of another truck, who also sustained injuries, was admitted to a hospital. The police has registered a case against the Gopal under Sections 279, 304A and 427 of the IPC. |

Councillor’s car set on fire
Chandigarh, May 26 Garg, a resident of Sector 56, reported to the police that a person tried to set afire his car (Ch-05 (T) -4615), which was parked near his residence today. The police has registered a case under section 435 of the IPC and initiated investigating. The police said a notorious criminal, who features on the bad character list of the police and identified as Tota, was behind the mischief. Last week miscreants had broken the windowpanes of the councillors' car. Last year, Garg, the then Senior Deputy Mayor, was in the news after garbage collectors piled up garbage outside his house in Sector 56. |

UT cop booked for drug peddling
Mohali, May 26 During preliminary interrogation, Kuldip Singh confessed that the recovered contraband belonged to Jang Singh, a UT policeman. According to Mohali SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, Kuldip, who used to run the vehicle as a taxi, met Jang Singh around three years ago. "Jang Singh told him to smuggle poppy husk from Rajasthan and used to give him Rs 10,000 per round," said Bhullar. Jang Singh, who lives in Chandigarh, was using a flat in Krishna Enclave at Khanpur village, near Kharar, as a godown to store the contraband. The police conducted a raid his residence and godown. He has absconded. Kuldip Singh has been involved in a drug peddling case, which had been registered at the Mullanpur Police Station in August last year. |

Mohali, May 26 Talking to Chandigarh Tribune, SP (City) Swarndeep Singh said the
police was looking for the main culprits in the incident. "So far, we are unable to pinpoint any student," said Swarndeep Singh. Today, the day went off peacefully at the institute. Several students of the institute reportedly held a meeting in which the next course of action was discussed. "We are upset as our genuine demands are not being met. The indifferent attitude of the management towards our demands forced the students to go on a rampage last night," said the students. A group of around 200 students set NIPER Officiating Director KK Bhutani's official car on fire and damaged another government car and administrative office of the institute last night (around 2.30 am). The agitated students were demanding Bhutani's removal, alleging that he was involved in corrupt practices. Around 50 policemen were deployed at the institute today. Swarndeep Singh, SP, who visited the institute in the morning, said the policemen would remain on duty there till the situation became normal. The students, who have been on protest since March 28 following a professor's removal by the management, have demanded more facilities for them apart from their main demand of Bhutani's removal. |

Couple arrested with opium in Mohali
Mohali, May 26 They were arrested from the Verka Park at Phase VI, here. They were waiting for their client, to whom the opium was to be delivered. Samar Vineet, station house officer of the area, said during preliminary inquiry it was found that the couple used to come here to sell narcotics. “We got a tip-off. During the search, we found half kg of opium from their possession,” said Samar. He said the police was trying to find their local clients here. A case under Sections 18, 61, 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against the couple at Phase 1 police station, here. The accused would be produced before the court tomorrow.

Panchkula, Hemant Kinger had three voter cards in two different wards, in Ward No 8 and Ward No 16. He had a vote in Sector 4 under the serial number 1,010, while his name also figured in voters’ lists of Army Flats in Mansa Devi Complex, under numbers 1,104 and 1,109. Similarly, Hemant Kinger’s daughter-in-law Namrata’s name, who stays in Canada figured in two voters’ lists, one in Sector 4 under serial number 1,011 and another in
MDC, Sector 4, under serial number 1,108. Also Kinger’s son who puts up in Canada had a voter enrolment card made in the recent list which created suspicion to the authorities. The CTM conducted an enquiry in the matter after Manoj
Aggarwal, district president of INLD submitted the complaint. The same was sent to DA for his report, who stated that the signatures of Kinger’s son and daughter in law were forged. It was also stated during enquiry that Kinger could not give any evidence as to how he sent the voter lists’ form to Canada for the signatures.

Jaishvin, Shivam clinch tennis titles
Chandigarh, May 26 Jaishvin took an early lead of 6-2 but Neel bounced back and levelled the score at 6-6. Sticking to his basics, Jaishvin, in the 13th game, turned the match in his favour as he went on to win five points in a row and wrapped the match 8-6. In the boys' (u-14) final, Shivam Vij defeated Sumer Sandhu. Sumer won the first set through a tiebreaker 5-4 (7-3) but Shivam, in the second set, came back in the game to down Sumer 5-3.
