IOC official held for graft
Ambala, May 17 The raid was carried out following a complaint by a local transporter, who alleged that Shankar, one of the safety officials at the depot, was forcing his drivers to shell out cash every time they drove into the depot to ferry petroleum products to various destinations. The complainant alleged that the official would refuse to issue safety certificates and complete other formalities on flimsy grounds to harass the drivers and the transport. A six-member team of Central Bureau of Investigation officials’ team, lead by inspector Ravinder Kaushik, rounded up the accused after hours of questioning. The CBI team also took into possession some of the documents which were taken away by the raiding team. Thereafter CBI team also raided the residence of the official arrested and reportedly recovered more documents from there. Meanwhile, sources said that Shankar had been caught red-handed while accepting the bribe money. The CBI later said that a case had been registered against Shankar under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and he would be produced before the CBI court at Panchkula on May 20. |

Patiala students come out with flying colours in Class X exam results
Patiala, May 17 Sehajbir Singh Uppal (Science) topped YPS School with 97.75 per cent, Chahat (Humanities) was second in the school with 97.25 per cent, Harpinder Singh (Science) third with 96.75 per cent, Navi Joshi (Science) fourth with 96.75 per cent and Asvin Malhotra (Commerce) was overall fifth in the school and topped the commerce stream with 96.25 per cent. As many as 17 students secured 90 per cent and above in aggregate. In the ICSE (Class X) examination, Puneesha Singla topped the school with 96.6 per cent, Kashish Goyal secured second position with 95.2 per cent and Akshita Garg was third with 95 per cent. Showing excellent results, the students of PPS, Nabha, has once again set an example of academic excellence. The school has achieved 100 per cent result in the ICSE examination. Harshil Sharma stood first by securing 95.4 per cent marks while Bhavnoor secured the second position with 94.6 per cent marks. As many as 53 students got the distinction while 34 students got the first division. In the ISC (XII) Science stream, 24 students took the exam. Of them five students got the distinctions while nine passed in the first division. Damanpreet Kaur stood first by securing 95 per cent marks. In the Commerce stream, 40 students made the grade. Kamaldeep Kaur stood first by getting 92.5 per cent marks while Hardeep Kaur with 91.75 per cent and Rajvir Singh Dhillon with 91.25 per cent secured the second and third positions, respectively. The British High School: In the Commerce stream, the highest result was 96.25 achieved by Jannat Sidhu in the Class XII examination. Three students in the Commerce stream scored 100 per cent in Accountancy as well as Physical Education. Class X saw the highest overall score at 96.8 per cent by Karan Attri, followed by a close 96.2 per cent by Rajat Gupta who also got 100 per cent in Mathematics. Infant’s body found on roadside
Ambala, May 17 Randhir Singh, Station House Officer (SHO), Ambala Cantt police station said that they had received information during the afternoon that the body of a girl child had been spotted in a ditch along the NH1. The police rushed to the spot and recovered the body, though the victim could not be identified. Notably, there was a thread tied around the left hand of victim, which appeared to be a ritual to ward off an evil eye. The SHO said that the body was shifted to the mortuary of the Civil Hospital for the postmortem examination and police had registered a case under the relevant against unidentified persons. The Station House Officer further said that from the preliminary investigations it could not be concluded as to what lead to the girl having been dumped in a ditch with her legs amputated. He added that further investigation was going on in this matter and results would be produced in an expediate manner. |

Two more arrested in P’kula dacoity case
Panchkula, May 17 The accused have been identified as Rishu, a resident of Chandigarh and Anil Kumar who hails from Barwala. Commissioner of Police Rajbir Deswal said that Anil Kumar had taken Rishu and Sujata in his car before the Navratras to see the house where they would be striking. It was yesterday when the Panchkula police cracked the case. The lure of a lavish lifestyle and making a quick buck led four girls to plan and execute the dacoity that took place at Sector 4, Panchkula, on Monday. Those arrested yesterday were Sujata and Tabassum, who live in Zirakpur, and Gokul of Orissa. Tabassum, who was in contact with Gokul on the phone, planned the dacoity during a meeting at Yavnika Park in Sector 5, Panchkula. —TNS |

Class XII girl teased outside school
Chandigarh, May 17 The girl, who is a class XII student, reached the school at 8.30 am when the incident took place. When the girl reached near the school gate, a youth approached her and asked her to take a bag inside and hand it over to a boy. The girl refused to take the bag inside the school. She went inside the school and narrated the entire incident to the school principal who called the police. The principal said the girl was so scared that she was not even able to explain the entire episode. The police reached the spot and started investigations. The girl reported to the police that the youth misbehaved with her when she refused to hold the bag. He even tried to strangle her with the dupatta that she was wearing. She resisted and her clothes were also torn in the process. She screamed, following which the boy fled away. The girl could not disclose the make of the motorcycle and its registration number to the police. The girl claimed that she had never seen the youth earlier. The police also questioned the people residing nearby the school. Residents said they did not witness any such incident. The police has registered a case and is trying to identify and nab the youth. |

Two arrested for attempting to rape minor girl in city
Chandigarh, May 17 The victim, in her complaint to the police, said she, along with the accused, had gone to attend a marriage ceremony at a village in Palampur a few days ago. The victim alleged that Dinesh and Monika took her to a room on the pretext of sleeping, and Dinesh tried to rape her. Giving details, the police said the girl, who hails from Palsora, had gone with her neighbours to attend the wedding of Dinesh’s elder brother at Rajpura village in Palampur. The girl raised an alarm when Monica threatened her. The victim said Dinesh and his cousin, Santosh, also made attempts to rape her the next day, but she managed to escape, and told the entire incident to the police. A case under Sections 341, 376, 511, 506, 120-B of the IPC and Sections 4 & 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offence Act - 2012 has been registered at Sector 39 police station. |

2 ITBP men arrested with fake currency
Chandigarh, May 17 Nain Singh, head constable of the ITBP, was arrested by the police when he came to deposit the cash at the State Bank of India, Airport Station 3 BRD, Chandigarh. During interrogation, the head constable disclosed that he received the amount from Amar Singh, Company Hawaldar Major of the ITBP. The police swung into action and arrested Amar Singh, too. A case under Sections 420, 489-B and 489-C of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 31 police station on the complaint of the branch manager. |
