IOC official held for graft

Ambala, May 17
A team of CBI officials raided the Indian Oil Corporation's (IOC) depot located on the National Highway No 1 and arrested one of its safety officials on charges of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 6,000.

The raid was carried out following a complaint by a local transporter, who alleged that Shankar, one of the safety officials at the depot, was forcing his drivers to shell out cash every time they drove into the depot to ferry petroleum products to various destinations.

The complainant alleged that the official would refuse to issue safety certificates and complete other formalities on flimsy grounds to harass the drivers and the transport.

A six-member team of Central Bureau of Investigation officials’ team, lead by inspector Ravinder Kaushik, rounded up the accused after hours of questioning.

The CBI team also took into possession some of the documents which were taken away by the raiding team.

Thereafter CBI team also raided the residence of the official arrested and reportedly recovered more documents from there.

Meanwhile, sources said that Shankar had been caught red-handed while accepting the bribe money. The CBI later said that a case had been registered against Shankar under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and he would be produced before the CBI court at Panchkula on May 20.

Patiala students come out with flying colours in Class X exam results

Keeping up the tradition of academic brilliance, students of Patiala have come out with flying colours in the ICSE and ISC results. The YPS Patiala school has achieved 100 per cent pass result in the ISC (Class XII) examination as a total of 106 students, who appeared for the examination, have passed.

Sehajbir Singh Uppal (Science) topped YPS School with 97.75 per cent, Chahat (Humanities) was second in the school with 97.25 per cent, Harpinder Singh (Science) third with 96.75 per cent, Navi Joshi (Science) fourth with 96.75 per cent and Asvin Malhotra (Commerce) was overall fifth in the school and topped the commerce stream with 96.25 per cent. As many as 17 students secured 90 per cent and above in aggregate.

In the ICSE (Class X) examination, Puneesha Singla topped the school with 96.6 per cent, Kashish Goyal secured second position with 95.2 per cent and Akshita Garg was third with 95 per cent. As many as 17 students secured 90 per cent and above in aggregate. A total of 128 students appeared for the examination. Of them 126 have passed.

PPS Nabha achieves 100% result

Showing excellent results, the students of PPS, Nabha, has once again set an example of academic excellence. The school has achieved 100 per cent result in the ICSE examination. Harshil Sharma stood first by securing 95.4 per cent marks while Bhavnoor secured the second position with 94.6 per cent marks. As many as 53 students got the distinction while 34 students got the first division.

In the ISC (XII) Science stream, 24 students took the exam. Of them five students got the distinctions while nine passed in the first division. Damanpreet Kaur stood first by securing 95 per cent marks. In the Commerce stream, 40 students made the grade. Kamaldeep Kaur stood first by getting 92.5 per cent marks while Hardeep Kaur with 91.75 per cent and Rajvir Singh Dhillon with 91.25 per cent secured the second and third positions, respectively.

In Humanities, six students made the grade. Sukhmani Sharma stood first, Komal second and Ajit Brar was third. School Headmaster Jagpreet Singh congratulated the faculty and the students on this excellent achievement.

Karan Attri secures 96.8% in Class X

The British High School: In the Commerce stream, the highest result was 96.25 achieved by Jannat Sidhu in the Class XII examination. Three students in the Commerce stream scored 100 per cent in Accountancy as well as Physical Education.

Class X saw the highest overall score at 96.8 per cent by Karan Attri, followed by a close 96.2 per cent by Rajat Gupta who also got 100 per cent in Mathematics. Penthaa Patel and Sathak Khurana scored 100 per cent in Computer Applications.

Infant’s body found on roadside

Ambala, May 17
The district police recovered the body of a one-and-half-year-old girl from the ditches along the National Highway No 1, near Ghasitpur village in the district, today with both her legs amputated.

Randhir Singh, Station House Officer (SHO), Ambala Cantt police station said that they had received information during the afternoon that the body of a girl child had been spotted in a ditch along the NH1. The police rushed to the spot and recovered the body, though the victim could not be identified.

Notably, there was a thread tied around the left hand of victim, which appeared to be a ritual to ward off an evil eye.

The SHO said that the body was shifted to the mortuary of the Civil Hospital for the postmortem examination and police had registered a case under the relevant against unidentified persons.

The Station House Officer further said that from the preliminary investigations it could not be concluded as to what lead to the girl having been dumped in a ditch with her legs amputated.

He added that further investigation was going on in this matter and results would be produced in an expediate manner.

Stay united, minister exhorts Cong workers

Preneet Kaur, Minister of Sate for External Affairs, said that SAD- BJP government of Punjab had failed to provide basic facilities to people and there was no development in any field. While addressing to pubic meetings she said people of state had become aware about the anti-people face of the State Government.

Talking about the issue of providing rights to institution of panchyat she blamed SAD-BJP government for not giving adequate rights to the panchyat, during their regime. She appealed to congress workers to stay united against the highhandedness of the State Government in these elections.

The wave had turned in favour of the Congress candidates for these elections, she added. Meanwhile the minister, addressed public meetings at Ranimajra, Jarout, Mianpur, Bhakri, Haripurhinduan, Bhankarpur and Mehamandpur.

23-yr-old gets 7-year jail for rape

Ropar, May 17
GS Gill, the District and Sessions Judge, sentenced a 23-year-old man to 7-year imprisonment for raping a 60-year-old woman here today. Gurjant Singh of Rangian village near Morinda had raped a physically handicapped woman on November 18 last year.

According to the prosecution, Gurjant intruded in to victim’s house when she was alone at home and committed the crime. Meanwhile the accused has also been fined Rs 11,000.

SUCHA SINGH CASE
Ex-SSP appears in court

Mohali, May 17
A former SSP of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau SS Virk today appeared in court in connection with a corruption case registered against former PWD Minister Sucha Singh Langah and others. The court had issued non-bailable warrants against him for not coming to give evidence in connection with the case.

Virk told the court that he was, in fact, ill and could not attend the hearing. He had submitted medical treatment and medicine purchase records. He told the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Dilbagh Singh Johal that he had earlier undergone a bypass surgery he pleaded for exemption for the hearing on May 22 in connection with a case against a former speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon and SS Board recruitment scam case as he had to appear in another case in Ropar. —OC

Murder case: 3 get life term

Mohali, May 17
The Mohali court sentenced three persons, Devinder Singh of Basian village, Pawan Kumar of Cholta Khurd and Sandeep Singh of Malakpur, to life term and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 in the murder of Devinder Kumar Sahota, a resident of Phase V.

The accused had committed murder in September, 2008. — OC

Two more arrested in P’kula dacoity case

Panchkula, May 17
Two more persons have been arrested in the Sector 4 dacoity case, including one girl and the property dealer. While three persons including two women and a youth from Orissa have already been arrested, three are still at large.

The accused have been identified as Rishu, a resident of Chandigarh and Anil Kumar who hails from Barwala. Commissioner of Police Rajbir Deswal said that Anil Kumar had taken Rishu and Sujata in his car before the Navratras to see the house where they would be striking.

It was yesterday when the Panchkula police cracked the case. The lure of a lavish lifestyle and making a quick buck led four girls to plan and execute the dacoity that took place at Sector 4, Panchkula, on Monday. Those arrested yesterday were Sujata and Tabassum, who live in Zirakpur, and Gokul of Orissa. Tabassum, who was in contact with Gokul on the phone, planned the dacoity during a meeting at Yavnika Park in Sector 5, Panchkula. —TNS

Class XII girl teased outside school
The youth attempted to strangle her with a dupatta

In a shocking incident, a schoolgirl was eve-teased and attempts were made to strangle her with a dupatta outside Government Senior Secondary School in Sector 23 today in the morning.

The girl, who is a class XII student, reached the school at 8.30 am when the incident took place. When the girl reached near the school gate, a youth approached her and asked her to take a bag inside and hand it over to a boy. The girl refused to take the bag inside the school.

She went inside the school and narrated the entire incident to the school principal who called the police. The principal said the girl was so scared that she was not even able to explain the entire episode. The police reached the spot and started investigations.

The girl reported to the police that the youth misbehaved with her when she refused to hold the bag. He even tried to strangle her with the dupatta that she was wearing. She resisted and her clothes were also torn in the process. She screamed, following which the boy fled away.

The girl could not disclose the make of the motorcycle and its registration number to the police.

The girl claimed that she had never seen the youth earlier. The police also questioned the people residing nearby the school. Residents said they did not witness any such incident.

The police has registered a case and is trying to identify and nab the youth.

Two arrested for attempting to rape minor girl in city

Chandigarh, May 17
The UT police arrested two persons, including a woman, for attempting to rape a minor girl. The accused, Dinesh and his sister, Monika, were produced in a local court and remanded in the judicial custody.

The victim, in her complaint to the police, said she, along with the accused, had gone to attend a marriage ceremony at a village in Palampur a few days ago.

The victim alleged that Dinesh and Monika took her to a room on the pretext of sleeping, and Dinesh tried to rape her.

Giving details, the police said the girl, who hails from Palsora, had gone with her neighbours to attend the wedding of Dinesh’s elder brother at Rajpura village in Palampur. The girl raised an alarm when Monica threatened her.

The victim said Dinesh and his cousin, Santosh, also made attempts to rape her the next day, but she managed to escape, and told the entire incident to the police.

A case under Sections 341, 376, 511, 506, 120-B of the IPC and Sections 4 & 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offence Act - 2012 has been registered at Sector 39 police station.

2 ITBP men arrested with fake currency

Chandigarh, May 17
The UT police today arrested two ITBP personnel, including a head constable, with fake currency notes amounting to Rs 91,000.

Nain Singh, head constable of the ITBP, was arrested by the police when he came to deposit the cash at the State Bank of India, Airport Station 3 BRD, Chandigarh.

During interrogation, the head constable disclosed that he received the amount from Amar Singh, Company Hawaldar Major of the ITBP.

The police swung into action and arrested Amar Singh, too.

A case under Sections 420, 489-B and 489-C of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 31 police station on the complaint of the branch manager.

Golf camp for kids from May 25

An eight-day Summer Golf Camp for kids will be conducted by an EGTF certified coach, Ajay Gujral, at the Chandigarh Golf Club from May 25 to June 2 here.

The timings will be between 4 pm and 5 pm. Both the members and the non-members are welcome to enrol for this camp to make the learning experience both productive and exciting. This golf coaching camp is designed for the children between 6 and 16 years. The enrolment will be done on a first-come-first-served basis.
