The national fruit of Jamaica, ackee (Blighia sapida), is not a native fruit of Jamaica. It came into that country from Ghana, a country in West Africa, in a ship bringing slaves from there. Ackee, a relative of litchi, bears attractive red to yellow-orange pear-shaped fruits weighing 150-200 gm each. When the fruit becomes ripe, it splits open to reveal three black seeds surrounded by soft creamy flesh which is eaten. Ackee fruits are also canned and exported. This fruit is yet to reach India.
