Congress workers disrupt traffic
Fatehgarh Sahib, May 11 While talking to The Tribune, Nagra said Ajaib Singh Jakhwali was the SAD (B) candidate from the Chanarthal zone and his brother, Balkar Singh, was working as the superintendent in the BDPO office, Sirhind. He said work under the MNREGA scheme was going on in certain villages of the constituency and the sarpanches of these villages belong to the Congress. Nagra alleged that Balkar Singh got a letter issued from the BDPO without the permission of the higher authorities directing the sarpanches to stop the work immediately. The sarpanches and the workers, who were assigned the work, protested against these orders issued in an arbitrary manner, and disrupted the traffic when no one paid heed to their requests. Nagra said now the orders had been withdrawn and the work
would continue. |

One killed in road accident
Dera Bassi, May 11 The victim was admitted to the Civil Hospital, Ambala, from where he was shifted to the PGI, Chandigarh. He later succumbed to his injuries. The police has registered a case against the youth who was riding the motorcycle under Sections 279 and 304 A of the IPC. The body of the victim has been handed over to relatives after conducting postmortem examination. |

Kaushalya Dam: Ex-MLA seeks water for Pinjore, Kalka
Kalka, May 11 Interacting with The Tribune, Rana said as the Kalka and Pinjore areas were facing acute water shortage for the past couple of years, especially in the summer season, the area is in dire need of surplus water supply. The Kalka and Pinjore areas should be supplied water from the dam on a priority basis. He said the matter would be put forth before the Haryana Chief Minister. He also sought a special package for the Kalka area, demanding that it be declared as a hilly area. |

Imposter held for threatening builder
Zirakpur, May 11 The accused, identified as Subramaniam Lakhsmi Naryanan, was arrested by the police from his residence in Bangalore. In the case registered at the Zirakpur police station, the complainant, Harish Gupta, managing director of Trishla Group, alleged that the accused used to threaten him of conducting income tax raids, while impersonating as the DC, Income Tax, Mumbai, if the complainant did not write off some transfer fee to one of his (Gupta) clients, Krishan Grover. Grover is allegedly a chartered accountant in the same company in which the accused used to work. Gupta alleged that Grover, who had purchased a flat in resale in his society at Zirakpur around three months ago, was insisting to write off transfer fee worth Rs 1.50 lakh. “When we refused, Subramaniam started calling to threaten us of an income tax raid if we did not waive the fee,” alleged Gupta. He said when investigated, it was found that there was no such officer with the name of Subramaniam in Mumbai. On being informed, the police investigated the case and arrested the accused from Bangalore. |

Proclaimed offender nabbed after 26 years in forgery case
Mohali, May 11 His accomplices in the case were Lal Singh, the then patwari of the area, Bhag Singh, the then naib tehsildar, and late Gurdev Singh, the then kanungo. Giving details, Hargobind Singh, Superintendent of Police, Vigilance Bureau, Punjab, said Harmail Singh was declared PO by the Ropar Court in 1999, while the rest accused had been arrested by the police. “Today, on the directions of Punjab Vigilance Bureau AIG RS Khatra, our flying squad-1 team, led by inspector Sanjiv Bhatt, arrested the accused from Phase XI. Harmail Singh had been residing at Kambali village here and was working as a truck driver,” said the SP. A case under Sections 465, 467, 468, 471 and 120B of the IPC and 13(1) (B) and 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, had been registered at Vigilance Bureau Police Station, Phase VIII, here. |

Man held for running illegal PG services
Chandigarh, May 11 Station House Officer, Sector 19 police station, Harjeet Kaur said during a routine check the accused was found accommodating around seven boys as PGs without seeking any permission from the Administration. “We will continue with this drive to book other house owners who are offering PG services illegally,” the SHO said. A case of disobedience to an order duly promulgated by a public servant under Section 188 of the IPC has been registered against Ram Pal. The accused was arrested and later left on bail. The UT Administration had recently clarified the difference between a tenant and a PG. According to the new definition, a paying guest is a person who is allowed to use a part of the residential premises, either individually or jointly, with or without food. According to an estimate of the UT Estate Office, there are more than 500 PG accommodations in the city, mainly in Sectors 15, 19, 22, 27, 32, 35, 40 and 44, of which only 14 are registered. |

Akali leader booked for thrashing transporter
Mohali, May 11 On the complaint of Narinder Singh, a local transporter, the police has registered a case under Sections 323, 341, 506, 148 and 149 of the IPC and 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act against Shindi and his accomplices Jagtar Singh Billa, Janti and other unidentified persons at the Phase I police station. No arrest has been made so far. According to the complainant, Shindi along with his acquaintances thrashed him at the truck union office here last evening, when he went there for some work. “When I raised the alarm, Billa put his pistol on my temple and threatened to shoot me,” alleged Narinder Singh. There are already four criminal cases registered against Shindi. Station House Officer Navin Pal Singh said the police was conducting raids to nab all the accused. |

Fake doctor arrested
Panchkula, May 11 Gurbhaag Singh, a villager, had visited the clinic as he was suffering from fever. Singh prescribed him some injections and medicines, which were made available to him at the clinic itself. Instead of showing any improvement, Gurbhaag’s condition deteriorated, following which he complained to the drug inspector, Yashpal. Yashpal raided the premises and asked for Singh’s medical degree. When Singh failed to provide it, he was booked under Sections 15(2) and 15(3) of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956, and 11, 27(b), 28 and 28-A of the Drug and Cosmetic Act, 1940. Upon getting the information, the police arrested the accused. He possessed a diploma in operation theater technology, said the police. |

Panchkula, May 11 The victims, Vikas, his father, Deep Kumar, and two others Ramesh Kumar and Ram Kumar, were rushed to the General Hospital, Sector 6, where Vikas was declared brought dead. All victims, residents of Natwal village in Barwala, were on their way home from Chandigarh. The police said the tractor fell into the gorge after the driver lost control over his vehicle. While Deep, Ramesh and Ram jumped off, Vikas got buried under the tractor in the gorge. The police reached the spot. The body of Vikas was taken out with the help of a crane. — TNS |

Chandigarh, May 11 A 35-year-old rag-picker died when a car hit her in Sector 22 this morning. Passers-by managed to identify the make of the car, but could not note down the registration number. The victim was rushed to Government Multi Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, where doctors declared her brought dead. In another incident, an unidentified pedestrian was hit by a vehicle near Cable Factory, Industrial Area, Phase I, yesterday. The victim was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Cricket buffs throng PCA stadium
Mohali, May 11
The 59th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) between Kings XI Punjab and Sunrise Hyderabad witnessed cricketing buffs thronging the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA). Being the last match here at the PCA Stadium, the arena was filled to its capacity. Bowling first, debutant and Patiala lad Sandeep Singh impressed everyone by taking three wickets for 21 runs in his four over spell. “It was a nice debut by him. He is capable of turning around the game and he did it by claiming consecutive wickets,” said Pritam Abhilash, a spectator. Another spectator added, “Being on the home ground was an advantage for him and he seized it. It was his first match. But it was nice to see him coming back after being hit for a boundary on the very first ball,” said Anand Mathur. On other end, Parthive Patel with his half-centurion knock, made the audience to remain on toes, throughout the first innings. “He was struggling hard to remain on crease but he displayed his class,” said Pallak Agnihotri. The last match at the PCA Stadium was entirely covered by the presence of audiences everyone was seen enjoying the match. The home side of Kings XI Punjab is schedule to play it’s last two league matches at Dharmashala.

Haryana grapplers win top honours
Chandigarh, May 11 Haryana girls made a clean sweep by claiming all the three gold medals at stake on Saturday evening. Mamta (45 kg), Lalita (55 kg) and Seema (67 kg) emerged victorious in their respective categories. In the 48 kg final, Mamta outplayed Indu Tomar of Uttar Pradesh while Lalita prevailed over Indu, also of Haryana, in the 55 kg class. Seema was more technically sound against Maghna Tomar of Uttar Pradesh in the 67 kg class and clinched gold. Two Haryana boys in 84 kg Greco-Roman have been disqualified as they did not give their sample for dope test to the NADA officials. A Delhi wrestler, who won gold in 74 kg Greco-Roman was given medal in absentia as the NADA officials were looking for him for his sample. In boys 84 kg Greco-Roman style, Prabh Pal Singh of Himachal Pradesh won gold. Prabh Pal Singh had shouldered Sandeep of Haryana in the third round of the final bout. 11 held for betting on IPL in Panchkula
Panchkula, May 11 Four persons were arrested from a flat in Group Housing Society 1, Mansa Devi Complex, Sector 5, Panchkula. The accused, who were living in a rented accommodation, have been identified as Ravinder Arora, Rajiv Kumar, Danvir and Aneesh Ahmed. The owners of the flat Navin Kumar and Navneet Sehgal have also been booked. While five persons were arrested from a house in Sector 21, Panchkula, betting on the matches. They have been identified as Gopal, Sunil, Rakesh, Pradeep and Sunil Kumar. “The accused were betting on the match between Delhi Daredevils and Rajasthan Royals. They belong to well to do families and were regularly betting on the matches,” said a police official. He added, “It is suspected that they have a large network. Their modus operandi still needs to be investigated. We are on with our investigations.” The police has also recovered Rs 1.2 lakh from the accused. Three laptops, three television sets and as many as 21 mobile phones have also been seized. |
