Ground reality
She grew up in City Beautiful, led a laid back, protected life with a daily geri to Panjab University campus on her scooty, complete with a typical helmet, face covered with a cloth and huge glares…ala Chandigarh mode! Only this Chandigarh di kudi is today an icon, face of many a mega brands!
Yami Gautam is in her hometown on a special trip. Welcomed to the beats of bhangra, she stepped up to dance despite her tall wedges and even did a kikli, traditional style. The actor despite her Vicky Donor fame holds her ground and discloses her age in a totally unfilmy way, “I was born on November 28, 1988, no other heroine will do that,” she says. She calls herself just ‘normal’ on being referred to as the ‘star’ the fifth time. The petite girl in denim shirt and bright pants, half pahari, half Punjabi, talks about her home and work.
My special visit
It is a special visit home. In fact, it’s lovely to rediscover my own city. I went boating today which I had never done when I stayed here. And, I am going to try my hands at farming too. There is indeed no city in the world that’s as pretty, organised and easy as Chandigarh. My work takes me around the world today, but I do want to relive those school days, those birthday parties and those daily visits to the campus!
Star-fan connect
I am truly thankful to UTV Stars for giving me a platform to connect with my fans. In fact, they are the ones who are the backbone of any actor’s success. I am glad being able to meet some of them in person in my own hometown. Thanks everyone!
The early beginning
I did not anticipate this career. It was a chance that our family friends from Mumbai mentioned TV and I thought I could do it. Vicky Donor got me a different identity and so did popular Fair & Lovely campaign. I still remember the first time I saw myself on screen in a Kannada movie and I liked it so much that I decided to make it my profession.
Work I love
I say yes to films that touch my heart. Vicky Donor was one, so is Aman Ki Asha, my upcoming film opposite Ali Zafar. I play Asha, a Punjabi NRI girl. It is a romcom and I cannot divulge much of the storyline. Also, while choosing commercials I go for something I can relate to and believe in.
Life in Mumbai
Without a godfather, it is tough establishing base in Mumbai. The city has a fast pace, each day is new and brings its own set of success, failure, lessons every day. Name, fame and glamour are what the rest of world sees. But people are not aware of the hard work that goes in it. It is one of the toughest industries in the world.
Awards vs appreciation
For me the biggest reward is appreciation by the audience. Awards may come or may not, after all in a creative field there are no rights and wrongs. I was shooting in London lately, and was happy that people had seen Vicky Donor and they did recognise and appreciate me.
On being grounded
While I am inspired by many professionally, it is my mother who motivates me personally. There is a life beyond the screen she says, and her mantra is to stay real, that keeps you comfortable, humble and
grounded. mona@tribunemail.com

Sense & sensitivity
The grey in her hair boasts not just of her experience as an early childhood education expert, but goes beyond the shades of knowledge and defined wisdom that is soaked in her ability to understand children.
“Children are born scientists,” says Prof Ellen Booth Church, while delivering a talk on successful parenting at Kinderpiller Pre School-46. As Ellen continues to wax eloquent about ways that can make a child creative, she also deliberates on the importance of stimulating their brain cells. “The first 2000 days are the most important days in a child’s life. It is during this time, when their brain needs to be stimulated and this can be done only through a lot of interactive activities,” she shares while adding, “Parents must realise that they need to propel the child’s thinking while inspiring them and engaging them in a banter that has a series of questions. Also, they must understand the importance of listening to their child.” As Ellen pours out several excerpts from her teaching experience, she poignantly focuses on the thought orientation of a child too, “As adults we usually underestimate a child’s ability to imagine and understand, but children are keen observers and they make a judicious use of all their five senses to notice, predict, evaluate, and understand. Also, as children grow, they will need to have a lot of memory bank to store the information required for their exams. You can indulge in action-coordination activities to develop their memory centres.” Meanwhile, she stresses on the importance of encouraging critical thinking in children that stems from their imagination. Also, she gets the parents to take part in several activities, post which she questions them about the same only to conclude that their answers were no better than the ones from the 4-year-olds! However, her presentation focuses on getting the children to play with serial boxes (to improve their arithmetic skills), treasure box and asking children to make estimations. While interacting with the parents on how to instil positive behaviour in their kids, Ellen says that it is important to spend time with children and try to listen to them. Parents need to spend time playing with their children. “It has been found that parents, who actually got on the floor and played with their children, had more active and brain-charged children. Also, playing is the most important development in a child’s life as it instils problem solving skills in kids and also boosts logical thinking,” she says.

Take it easy!
Paulo Coelho in his book The Manuscript Found In Accra has laid down more than 100 rules to make life easy, simple and blissful. Our woman here hasn’t read any of these, but she has always known one basic rule that has kept her happy—‘I am comfortable in my skin, I do what I want to and be happy with that’.
It might not sound as profound as Paulo Coelho’s thoughts, but it has made actress Nauheed Cyrusi sail through the tough times. “It still helps,” she says with an innocent smile. It is with this same smile that she greets her new guest Aamir Khan in the new advertisement. It is the same association with Godrej that brings her to Chandigarh to announce the winners of Godrej Smart Homemakers contest. The extremely soft spoken actress might sound unreal for once, but then this is how Nauheed has been always. No rush, just easy… Quizzing her on what’s keeping her busy these days doesn’t make her spew an over-crowded schedule list. “Godrej is keeping me busy. I didn’t know I was going to share screen space with Aamir Khan in the advertisement,” Nauheed rolls up her eyes, lifts her hand, her impishness and excitement flows without pretence. She will not make any effort to hide it. “You know how it was, I always wanted to work with Aamir. And here I was, doing an ad with him,” she shares. With Aamir around, even the air becomes perfect! She laughs, “Now I know why people call him the best. He takes work seriously, gets down to the details and he knows what he is doing,” Nauheed says. Now we know it is the ad film that’s keeping Nauheed busy. In fact, this is something she likes. “I like to do ads, I simply enjoy them and I can go on doing it for the rest of my life. Ads are difficult instead; here we have seconds to sell the message.” She likes her world, with the right kind of people to remind her of what she is. Nauheed doesn’t want to be in any kind of rut. “I never was, I did films that I liked, I would not go out looking for something extra. I am happy in my space that keeps me busy in my own way,” adds Nauheed. “I don’t miss the limelight, I never wanted to be all over,” the smile remains.

For women, by women
Pali Waraich, a designer by profession, wanted to do something for the underprivileged and she did it by organizing an exhibition at Aroma-22, Chandigarh. On display
The label is known as Zameen-Asmaan, which involves underprivileged women. Starting from pure crepe, silk and georgette sarees with handmade zari and crochet work, to short and long length tunics, cotton kurtas and chiffon dupattas with zari border are part of the exhibition. Pali says “Crochet is famous with the women in Mumbai like phulkari is in Punjab.” With 30 years into social service, Pali has a lot to share, but she chooses to focus on what she has been striving to achieve, the economic independence of women. “The local housewives of Mumbai have been working for me for all these years and believe me it's been a long journey. Today, they are confident and happy and that's just what I have always wanted.” “I am a designer from Mumbai and that's where it all started. I have designed blouses for Satya Paul, Tarun Tahiliani, Saga and many other prestigious brands. But I always wanted to do something meaningful, so I decided to go for the path less chosen. Undeniably, it was a difficult decision but I don't regret it.” Running an organization without finances is not an easy task. She adds, “Even now, I don't accept charity; I only charge what the work deserves.” For a cause
While you flaunt the beauty of the intricate craft, you also contribute to society, so you don't feel guilty either. The price of the displayed fabrics starts from Rs 500 and it goes up to Rs 1,500 for the kurtas and Rs 20,000 for the saris. Future with phulkari
Pali is hoping to focus now on Chandigarh. She says, “I won't leave my workers in Mumbai behind. They will still contribute as much as they did earlier. In fact, I am hoping to expand my work so more women can join me and feel independent.” While crochet still remains her focus, she will be concentrating on phulkari, considering that its roots lie in Punjab. On till May 11

Life cycle
He designed his first bicycle in 1991 and since then there has been no stopping him. Talk to him about bicycles and he will tell you a story, an interesting one. He is a man with a dream to reach the skies. So what if the path is unusual and less trodden and more stumbled upon, he will ride through it on his gigantic bicycle. Rajeev Kumar aka Johny talks about his love for bicycle and his future plans. About the bicycle
Making something huge
out of the ordinary is a craft in itself. It took two years for Rajeev to create this unusual design. Also, it cost him Rs 80,000. But a smile on Rajeev's face says how much it means to him, “I love designing bicycles.” When you look at the bicycle you need not ask what's unusual. You can see how it stands out. Exactly what's the dimension could be the question. “Its length is 9 feet 6 inches and the minimum height is 8 feet 6 inches. The maximum height is 10 feet 6 inches. While we can't help but wonder how we can possibly go about riding it, some things are better left to imagination. “Of course, it wouldn't be easy for anyone to ride it for the first time and honestly I am not here to sell it or give rides.” Tourism transformed
Born and brought up in Chandigarh, Rajeev couldn't help but tlak about his love for the city. “We
all know that the tracks in Chandigarh were actually built for cycling. Unfortunately in these few years, these have transformed into chaotic zones by polluting vehicles.
I hope to bring those days back by promoting bicycle tourism.” After having a place in
the Limca Book Record along with India Book Record, Rajeev hopes to further create a Guinness World Record for covering the longest distance on the tallest cycle. “I wish to ride the bicycle from Chandigarh to Mumbai. Hopefully after that I will move further to international level.”

Par Excellence
The core or the abdominal muscles play a very important role in the golf swing. They help in providing stability to the lower body and also create swing speed. A weak core will create problems of getting into a good posture and being able to maintain it, lack of swing speed due to a slow rotation of the body and a high risk of injury to the lower back.
If a person sits on a chair for many hours due to the nature of their job, they would tend to have weak abdominal or core muscles coupled with weak glutes. This combination would lead to posture problems during the golf swing and an increased risk of injury. The hips and the thoracic spine are designed to rotate (mobility) while the lumbar spine or lower back is not to rotate (stability). When either of the hips or upper body does not rotate the lower back takes over this job and in the effort to rotate gets injured as it is not designed for this movement. This tendency could be due to tight muscles or joints in the upper back or hips or an unstable or weak core. A weak core can be a cause of many swing faults and therefore regular core exercises would definitely help ones golf. The plank and the side plank with rotation are great exercises for the core. The plank is a simple exercise and can be done easily at home. Improvements can easily be seen as the length of time one can hold this position reflects the strength of the core. Get into a push up position with your arms folded (picture 1) and make sure that your back and legs form a straight line. Hold this position for as long as you can. The minimum requirement is to be able to hold this position for 60 seconds. Repeat this exercise 2-3 times for 60 seconds each time. Persons with strong core muscles can hold this position for 5 minutes. The side plank (picture 2) is the next exercise you could go to once you achieve a good level with the plank exercise. The next step would be to rotate and reach as far as you can behind your back without touching your hand to the ground (picture 3). Exercise regularly to improve your core muscles and thereby improve your golf.

TROUBLE SHOOTER
Why do some people have more negative thoughts and why are some people cheerful most of the time? Can one change this?
Ashish, Chandigarh Well, we are all born with different personalities and our environment also influences the way we react to situations. Even identical twins have differences and if identical twins are brought up separately, they may have uncanny similarities when they grow up. The brain is still poorly understood but different areas of the brain are active in different disorders. For example, in depression, it has been seen that there is increased activity in the anterior medial inferior part of the frontal lobes. Similarly in obsessive compulsive disorder, a particular brain nucleus is smaller in size than people without OCD. So though many people with disorders like these need medication, many people can also rewire their brain with cognitive behaviour therapy where a person is taught to develop new ways of thinking in particular situations. However, the doctor needs to decide whether medicine is required or not. People can be taught to be more cheerful. Pessimistic people tend to ruminate and dwell on what has gone wrong in the past. They can be taught to change the thoughts by teaching them to dwell on what went well that day. Similarly children can be taught how to view things in a positive light from an early age. My older child does not like his younger sister and says he hates her. How can I change that? Preeti Singh, Melbourne Pay more attention to the older kid. Spend some time with him that is your and his time. Involve him as your special helper where he gets to help you on tasks such as fetching something or putting toys away. Reward with small gifts (small toys or goodies) and praise. Be calm yourself and avoid shouting at the older one. Listen to his point of view and acknowledge his feelings. (Waraich is a psychotherapist)

It's all in the family
In the last few days the petite and pretty Shraddha Kapoor's life has undergone a complete transformation. It's known as the before-and-after affect. And it happens to every aspirant who is blessed with that career-changing hit. Understandably Shraddha Kapoor is a little dazed and disoriented with all that has happened to her since the release of Aashiqui 2. Here she talks about it. Crazy schedule
I can't believe all this is happening to me! It's just not registering in my mind. I haven't had the time to let it all sink in. I am scared if I begin to understand all that's being said and written about me and my performance, I'll just break down and howl. For now, my co-star Aditya and I are just going crazy with the marketing and promotion. We haven't really had time to feel successful. Being known
People seem to love the film. They've connected with my character. Suddenly on the roads and in the airports there is a lot of finger-pointing and saying, 'Look, Aashiqui ki heroine'. I am trying to get used to the attention. I've to admit it feels nice. I was in Delhi over the weekend for a wedding. On the airport I had random people coming forward to say hello to me. Karmic connection
And, do you know, I am related to Lataji and Ashaji? My mother Shivangi Kolhapure and my aunt Padmini Kolhapure are singers too. So playing a singer was part of my karma and in my genes, I guess. Mahesh Bhatt Saab had predicted this film would be the film I'd want to preserve for posterity. He was right. Kapoor household
My home is currently a beehive of activity. My brother and I have releases within a week of each other. So our home is a madhouse at the moment. I hope it stays that way. My parents (actor Shakti Kapoor and Shivangi Kolhapure) are over the moon about Aashiqui 2. But the happiest one is my brother. Siddhant Bhaiyya himself made his debut in Shootout At Wadala. So he is excited about my film while I am nervous and excited about his debut.

Wedding bells for Keira Knightley
Actress Keira Knightley has married Klaxons star James Righton in a ceremony held in the south of France.
The couple, who have been dating since 2011, wed in front of about 10 people in Mazan, Provence, close to where the bride's family has a holiday home. The short service was followed by a reception for family and friends, reported to have included Righton's bandmates and actress Sienna Miller.
Knightley, 28, announced her engagement to Righton, 29, last year. "Keira was a charming bride, very modest and simple in her attitude, as was James," Mayor Aime Navello told a publication. "I got the impression that it was a very moving experience for both of them." The actress, who was Oscar-nominated for her performance in 2005's Pride and Prejudice, is the daughter of playwright Sharman Macdonald and actor Will Knightley. She rose to fame in the British hit Bend it like Beckham, becoming an international star in films including Love Actually and the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Knightley also won critical acclaim for her performances in films such as Atonement, A Dangerous Method and most recently, Anna Karenina. Singer and keyboard player Righton has performed with rock band the Klaxons since 2005. The group won a Mercury Music Prize in 2007 for their debut album Myths Of The Near Future. In an interview, Knightley earlier said she did not want an extravagant wedding. "We're not 'big wedding' types. I don't need to have all that. I'm just trying to enjoy the engagement bit." "My parents are together after 40 years. The fights are there but they love each other. It's not like the first three months, the first two years... whatever it is, but I think it gets more interesting, or I hope so," she said.

Motherhood & more
Actress Tara Sharma hosts a popular parenting show on television which is absolutely natural, real and fun. She is a working mom but is not looking at getting back into movies. The bubbly young mother is happy with her blog and talk show. She talks about her two young sons and her love of writing. A typical day
My days starts around 7 in the morning. I enjoy some time with the kids over breakfast and then have coffee with Roopak. We also try and squeeze in some exercise before he heads off to work and the kids to nursery and playschool. Then works begins. I am either busy at the office, shooting or working from home. The afternoon is nap time for the kids. In the evening, we usually have some activity planned. We hit the race course, have play dates and sometimes go swimming too. We end the day with our standard night-time ritual. New mum's diary
The tag line for the blog and the show is 'Diaries of a new mum' and that's exactly what the blog is all about. It's not just about baby stuff. There are so many other things that go on in the life of a mother that have nothing to do with her kids. My blog is about all those things too. For instance, when my dad passed away, I really found solace in writing. It was easier for me to interact with complete strangers via my blog than for me to talk to people I know well. Zen and Kai
Surprisingly, the close age gap between Zen and Kai has worked to our advantage. They land up being great company for each other since they are less than two years apart. They have similar needs, friends and enjoy similar tasks right now. Zen has grown into a role model for Kai in certain ways. And while they do have the regular sibling squabbles, it's never really serious. I love that my work allows me to be with my sons and play with them, watch them grow. They are smart enough to not disturb me when I work from home and I can even get some work done from a park thanks to smartphones and such gadgets.

I am an instinctive actor: Ali
Rajshri’s widely appreciated family show, Jhilmil Sitaaron Ka Aangan Hoga, is coming up with a new story line and star cast. Meanwhile, television’s hot hunk, Amir Ali, who recently made his entry as a lead protagonist in the show, has already made waves with his solid performance. Here are a few excerpts from the candid conversation he had with the Life+Style. What is the new storyline of Jhilmil Sitaaron Ka Aangan Hoga? In the forthcoming episodes of the show, Angana’s husband, Akash breathes his last and while dying, he takes a promise from Angana that she would remain a Suhagaan. Even after 13 days of Akash’s death, Angana has still not accepted the truth. Meanwhile, Saumya and her father, Vimalchand come over to Raichand’s house to attend Akash’s Teravi. During the Teravi, Saumya’s son, Milan, gets lost in the Haveli, Angana accidentally finds him, and the kid brings her to her senses. Later, a special bond develops between Angana and the kid. Life takes a sweet turn when Angana and Saumya meet each other. Earlier you had played the role of
Saumya in Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki, how is it different from role of Saumya in
Jhilmil...? I am very nostalgic at the moment as Saumya’s character is very close to my heart and I can never forget it. Also, the character I play in Jhilmil is actually an extension of Saumya of Woh Rehne Waali. Saumya is the adarshwadi son, brother and husband. The only difference in the character of Saumya then and the one now is the way he dresses. While the protagonist of Woh Rehne Waali would wear casual dresses, this chap is all suited and booted. I think I am an instinctive actor and I give my own inputs to the character as and when the situation and storyline demands. How does it feel to be associating
with Sahara One and Rajshri for the second time? Till date, my best shows have been with Sahara One and SAB TV. I am an actor, and my work is to do my best. I do not worry about TRPs. As for this show, I am impressed with the storyline that Soorajji narrated to me. The characters are well etched and I am sure that people will fall in love with them. I already miss working with Kavita Barjatya (she has taken a break from television as of now) and it is Soorajji who is creatively involved these days. I am looking forward to my next big association with them. Tell us something about your fitness and diet regime. I have been a fitness freak since the age of 17 and I am really into sports. Whenever I get time, I play cricket and football. I am also very particular about what I eat. It is said that actors should avoid eating sweets and oily food as they lead to weight gain. However, I think regular workout is necessary to cut the flab and not stopping what you desire to eat. Where do you place yourself in the race to stardom among other actors? Its best left for the viewers to decide. I am not the kinds who blow their own trumpet. I just believe in giving my best as an actor and leave it for the viewers to decide for themselves.
— Dharampal
Chills down your spine The forthcoming story on Sahara One’s Haunted Nights is all set to give to its viewers a yet another spine-chilling and jaw-dropping tale of horror—Woh Phir Aayegi. The story revolves around a renowned professor, Alok Nanda, who runs a famous coaching institute and tutors the students preparing for entrance exams. He falls deeply in love with one of his students, Saniya Arora and makes consistent efforts to spend much time with Saniya after the classes. One day, Alok crosses all his limits as he tries to molest her, which leaves Saniya shocked and she lodges a complaint against him. Initially, the case is completely in Saniya’s favour, however the case takes a full circle and Alok along with his best friend, Dinesh and proves Saniya guilty of wrong intentions. Will Saniya succeed in fighting her tormentors and get them punished for their heinous act? Watch out for Woh Phir Aayegi series on Sahara One’s Haunted Nights form May 6 onwards at 7.30 pm. Silver screen debut
Vishal Karwal, who is known to make women go weak in their knees with his handsome looks and smile, will now be seen in a new avatar on the big screen. The actor has signed Vikram Bhatt’s next film opposite Meera Chopra. The film will be the third installment of the 1920 franchise and will see Vishal in a completely new look. A source close to Vishal says, “Vishal was getting a lot of TV offers post Bigg Boss but his passion is films. He even turned down a popular show that was offered to him. After couple of meetings, Vishal was signed on for 1920’s third installment.” Vishal says, “I’m glad to be a part of the film. I was quite shocked when I heard my role and it was a real challenge. It’s a very different debut than the usual romantic ones. I’m really looking forward to shooting.” says the beaming actor.
Going off air
Sab TV is planning to do away with yet another show, Hum Aapke Hai In Laws, which was launched with much fanfare with Karan Grover and Pooja Pihal. However, because the show has not been able to garner TRPs, the show will go off air soon. This show follows the fate of Tota Weds Maina that was launched with much pomp and show, but went off air a while ago. |
