Power of the unspoken
Author Chetan Bhagat is a stranger neither to applause nor to criticism. He has learnt the art of taking both in his stride…
Manpriya Singh

As an author who created a market of Indian authors and English writing, re-introduced the cinematic adaptations of contemporary literature, Chetan Bhagat justifies the ruckus that precedes him and the riot that he leaves with; the riot comprising string of questions, queue of people for a moment of interaction, school children hoping to chance upon some secret pearls of wisdom and more.

Indian cinema, adaptations, school curriculum, education system, couple of controversies and Salman Khan or even Salman Rushdie…remaining unfazed is an art he's acquired over time. "I've learnt not to take myself too seriously. I don't take praise too seriously as well, like what I received here today with school children and I also don't take criticism to my heart," he shares, while in Chandigarh for a seminar at Chitkara International School. He adds, "I can claim that I have not upset any community through my writings though."

From recounting students' perspective in his debut work to being a parent himself, there's a subtle shift in the level of understanding. "My own children go to a Cathedral School in Mumbai. It's a very old and traditional school, and the reason why we chose that instead of a new modern age school was because we wanted a lot of emphasis on traditional values and discipline…now, being a parent myself, my views are more balanced."

As for the person behind the author, he's, "A real optimistic. We have already seen quite a lot of change in the country. There's more to come. The corruption levels have come down or at least it's not as easy anymore." In between the opinion pieces, there was some personal trivia. "Not many people know but I wanted to be chef because I can cook well. My son has acted in the movie Kai Po Che and I like Chandigarh a lot." Did one of the students ask him about his good old student days? "That's a long story, but I was not confident enough to pick up a microphone in front of a packed auditorium then."

Talking films

It may have all started with Five Point Someone or Three Idiots; his cinematic journey, through literature, continued with Three Mistakes of My Life into Kai Po Che and Two States, being adapted by Dharma Productions. "I actually thought that Three Mistakes of My Life was very difficult to adapt considering it spoke of some of the major happenings in Gujarat." He adds, "I don't really keep adaptations in mind when I work on my subjects. I don't really need to do that anymore. It's just that every film needs a story and a good script for that matter. That's where there's more and more scope for literature in cinema." Coming up is Kick with Salman Khan, the script that he's currently working on. "We are working on the script but it's not my story or anything like that."

As for the man that he's working with, "Salman is not someone who'll read the script himself. He doesn't believe in scripts, he believes in narrations and goes by the director. The film is about adrenaline rush." Apart from a deluge of movies based on his own stories, "There are Prem Chand's and Amrita Pritam's works that can be explored."

Considering, he works on "only one subject at a time," there's no way he's letting us even a whiff of his next. "As far as the subject is concerned, I can't even tell my wife about it."

Bound by a cause
Producer Jasbir Singh Derewal says the present Punjabi generation staying abroad should know about our cinema and culture…
Jasmine Singh

A romantic spin with plenty of comedy, a topping of fights…all is well with the one big happy family of the Punjabi film industry. This is how they are and this is how they choose to be for a while. A white starched kurta with denims, pretty much the Punjabi style, producer Jasbir Singh Derewal flashes a confident smile. He looks at the AV that shows his national award-winning movie Nabar, his expressions changing from happy to grim and then serious as the scenes flash in the front.

His debut movie as a producer bags the 60th National Award for best Punjabi feature film from the President of India on Friday. It is a proud moment for the producer and the lead actor Nishawn Bhullar, who is accompanying him. Nabar, which means rebel with a cause, is a movie based on the growing trend of Punjabi youngsters selling-off their assets to move to foreign lands; much different from the ongoing romcoms in the industry.

"I could have done the same thing, but then I would be one-odd producer amongst the others," says Jasbir, who moved to the UK years back. This is the first production and the man did not think twice before pumping his money into the project, which wasn't commercial. "This is because I had complete faith in the story; I liked the content and this is what differentiates one film from the other. There is no harm in comedy or romance if it has some content to offer," says the producer, who wants the present Punjabi generation staying abroad to know about our cinema and culture.

Unlike a producer, Jasbir took interest in every department of moving- making. He wanted to understand where and how he was investing money. "In the end, a producer would look forward to the recovery of his investment. Awards lift the morale and give the push, but money is also important," he adds.

With the number of producers exceeding the number of directors, Jasbir wonders what will happen if the scenario continues. "It is a vicious chain. I would want to work with established actors and also give a chance to the fresh talent in Punjab."

Togetherness is the key

Happily married to Saif Ali Khan, Bollywood diva Kareena Kapoor says that just like any other regular couple they try to enjoy small pleasures of life by doing things together. Action gone awry

Forced rest: Shahid Kapoor The fire accident on the sets of Prabhudheva's Rambo Rajkumar earlier this week here was not as minor as it is being made out to be. Shahid Kapoor is said to have got burn injuries on his back and hand and he would need some time to recover fully.

"We were shooting a fire sequence when the chemical used to create the fire went awry. It singed Shahid's shoulder and hand. It could've been worse. Thankfully nothing serious happened," said a source close to the film.

Meanwhile, the stunts in Rambo Rajkumar are getting more and more dare-devilish as Prabhudheva wants them to be one-up on what Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar did in Wanted and Rowdy Rathore, respectively.

When Shahid decided to do his first action film, he had to make sure the stunts were of the never-before variety. That's why he waited so long to do an action film and opted out of his friend Siddharth Anand's Bang Bang," said the source. It is little known that Bang Bang was a project that was planned with Shahid. The source said: "But then somewhere down the line Shahid preferred Prabhu's project as his first attempt at the action genre." — IANS

Another song in offing

Ayushmann Khurrana, who has sung popular numbers like Paani da rang and Saddi galli aaja in his films, says he will be crooning one number in a new movie produced by Yash Raj Films (YRF). He sang one song in his debut film Vicky Donor, and in his second film Nautanki Saala, the actor-singer sang two numbers — Saadi galli and Tu hi tu.

He is gearing up for the new song in the YRF romantic comedy, which also features Sonam Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor and is directed by Nupur Asthana.

"My next film with YRF, as you all know its on recession. The film stars Sonam Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor. As of now, I am singing one song in this film," the 28-year-old said.

A cool and casual dresser himself, Ayushmann also shared his views on how cinema and fashion have gone hand in hand over the years.

"With our cinema, fashion has also undergone change - whether it is Amitabh Bachchan's bell-bottoms or Jeetendra's skinny pants," Ayushmann said. "We have watched the fashion changing, and I think cinema will always promote fashion," he added. — IANS

Second time lucky

Tricky act: Bobby Deol Bobby Deol had a tough time while shooting one of the sequences from his upcoming film, Yamla Pagla Deewana 2. During the shooting of the title track of the film, Bobby was supposed to open a champagne bottle on cue. While the shot was on, his co-star Kristina Akheeva quite easily opened the bottle.

However, Bobby could not pop the cork even after trying repeatedly. He kept on trying to open the bottle, but could not, much to the amusement of the cast and crew members.

During the next shot, a more determined Bobby popped the champagne cork in his first attempt.

Speaking about this incident, Bobby said, "That's always the case with opening a champagne bottle. When you want it to open, it doesn't open. Otherwise, it just pops out and spills all over. In my case, it didn't open!"

While Dharmendra, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol will reprise their roles from the previous film, Yamla Pagla Deewana, Neha Sharma and Kristina Akheeva will play the female leads. The film also features Johnny Lever, Anupam Kher, Annu Kapoor and Sucheta Khanna in pivotal roles. Yamla Pagla Deewana 2, directed by Sangeeth Sivan, is set to release on June 7.

There were rumours that you are doing Punar Vivaah 2?

No. I had just gone to meet the producers when the news spread. I am not doing that show.

You chose to do Junoon?

Yes the show is exciting as is my character. I will be playing the lead. My character is called Shalu and she is someone who is fun yet powerful, mad yet loving.

Why did you choose to anchor DD show Rangoli?

The reach of Doordarshan is really wide. Their TRPs are double of other channels, as in rural areas people watch only DD and this was a good way to reach out to them. Anyways, I have to shoot only few days in a week, which is nice.

What else is happening with you?

I have Rangoli, Junoon and also host a reality show for Big Magic, so all this keeps me busy.

What happened to your film production?

Nothing yet; things are in progress.
