Murder cases: 2 get life imprisonment

Ambala, May 3
Additional Sessions Judge RC Dimiri sentenced a residence of Ambala Cantonment to life term in a murder case today. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the accused, Raju.

According to prosecution, deceased Rajesh was employed in Raju’s shop. He owed some amount to Raju but had failed to return the amount. On June 15, 2012, Raju along with five persons came to Rajesh’s residence and set him on fire by throwing kerosene oil.

Rajesh sustained serious burn injury and was admitted to a local civil hospital. The police had registered a case against six persons under Section 307 of the IPC. Rajesh succumbed to his injuries on June 22. The police then added Section 302 of IPC in the FIR. The court held Raju guilty while the other accused of the case were acquitted.

In another case, special judge of the Ambala fast track court Vimlesh Tanwar gave life term to a woman for throwing acid on her sister-in-law, which resulted in her death. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on the accused.

According to prosecution, there was a family dispute between Seema and her sister-in-law, Sakshi. On November 8, 2010, Seema went to Sakshi’s house located in Geeta Nagari. She also carried a few bottles of acid with her. As soon as she entered her house, she threw acid on her. Sakshi sustained serious burn injuries and was shifted to the PGI, Chandigarh, where she succumbed to her burn injuries.

Sakshi in her dying declaration before a magistrate had stated that Seema had thrown acid on her and on this basis a case was registered against Seema at the Baldev Nagar police station.

World Press Freedom Day celebrated

Rupnagar Press club organised a function on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day today.

Rupnagar SSP Inder Mohan Singh was the chief guest on the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, the SSP lauded the role of media in protecting the rights of 
every one and flourishing of the democracy.

He said being the fourth pillar of democracy, media was playing important role in creating awareness among the people on various issues for ensuring justice to all.

Rupnagar Improvement Trust’s former chairman Dr RS Parmar urged the media persons to perform their professional duty in a fair and fearless manner. He said media must play a proactive role in highlighting the problems of the people for their prompt redressal. Earlier, in his welcome address Rupnagar Press Club president Bahadurjeet Singh highlighted the importance of the day and called for concerted efforts to stop the attacks on the freedom of media from various government and non-government quarters.

On the occasion, Rupnagar Press Club also honoured former BS Balli on his retirement from 32 years of service as the DPRO. —TNS

Man gets10-yr jail for raping minor

Additional sessions judge Kamaljeet Singh Bajwa today sentenced an employee to 10-year imprisonment for raping a minor girl. The guilty has been identified as Ratnesh, a native of Kehara village near Barilley in Uttar Pradesh.

It was on February 4 that Ratnesh abducted a local girl and fled to his home. On complaint of parents of victim a case under Sections 363, 366 and 376 IPC was registered against him. Ratnesh was working with a local hotel. Later, he was arrested when he returned to get his belongings at Ropar.

Woman held with opium

Fatehgarh Sahib, May 3
The district police today arrested one of the leading woman drug peddlers of the state and recovered 1 kg opium from her possession.

SSP Gurmeet Singh Chauhan said the district police has been directed to further intensify the campaign against drug peddlers. He said during a search operation, the Sirhind police at a naka near Tarkhan Majra village intercepted a lady and recovered 1 kg opium from her possession.

He said during preliminary investigation, she revealed her identity as Jaspal Kaur, a resident of Banga. She said that she had just been released from Jalandhar jail after seven years.

She was later produced in the court and was remanded three-day police custody.

SSP takes charge

Gurmeet Singh Chauhan has taken over the charge of SSP of Fatehgarh Sahib today.

He replaced Hardial Singh Mann, who has been posted to Patiala. Before taking the charge, he paid obeisance at a historical Gurudwara at Fatehgarh Sahib. Addressing the police officials, he said that his priority would be to intensify the campaign against anti-social elements, particularly drug peddlers.

Food waste management system set up

Thapar University has installed a food waste management system at boys’ hostel on the university campus to deal with the issue of organic waste management.

Man gets 1-yr jail in cheque bounce case

A local court sentenced an advocate involved in a cheque bounce case to one-year imprisonment.

The accused, Kanwar Pal Cheema, had given a cheque of Rs 44 lakh to a resident of Sector 16, Mangat Ram, in 2009 as part of an agreement over a plot.

The cheque bounced, following which Mangat moved the court.

National consumer panel puts PGI on notice

The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, New Delhi, today admitted and issued notice to the PGIMER Administration on the petition seeking enhancement of the compensation amount awarded by the State Commission Chandigarh in Anupama death case.

Anupama, a 15-year-old girl, died at the PGIMER in July, last year. Her left leg was crushed under the rear tyre of a CTU bus and she was rushed to the PGIMER for treatment. In August, last year, her parents had filed a complaint against the PGI and CTU alleging negligence at the hands of the two parties.

Last month, Chandigarh Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission had direction the PGIMER to provide Rs 7 lakh as compensation for medical negligence to Anupama’s distraught parents.

Anupama was rushed to the PGIMER on July 1, last year, and succumbed to her injuries on July 24. Over these days, she underwent hip disarticulation due to the spread of gas gangrene in her entire leg and died after few three days. The parents alleged that this happened due to delay in surgery of her leg.

Advocate, counsel for Anupama's parents said here today that the appeal petition seeks enhancement of the awarded compensation amount from Rs. 7 lakhs to Rs. 75 lakhs.

Earlier, Aggrieved by the meagre compensation granted by the UT State Commission, Anupama's parents had filed an Appeal before the National Consumer Disputes redressal Commission, New Delhi on April 18.

The Bench Headed By Justice Ashok Bhan (Retd), President of the National Commission heard the appeal and issued notice calling upon the PGI to file its return reply within four weeks.

Husband convicted of abetment to suicide
Quantum of sentence to be pronounced on May 6

The Court of District and Sessions Judge SK Aggarwal today convicted a man of abetment to suicide. The court convicted Subhash Chander of forcing his wife to commit suicide in February 2010.

The quantum of sentence will be pronounced on May 6. The court, however, acquitted Subhash’s girlfriend, Babita, and her two brothers, as the prosecution failed to prove the charges. The accused, Subhash Chander, is a former accountant general in Allahabad.

Aruna Srivastava (35) hanged herself from a ceiling fan at her Sector 41 residence. In the suicide note, which was found scribbled on her thigh during the postmortem 
examination, she had blamed her husband for forcing her to take the extreme step.

According to the prosecution, Aruna’s body was spotted by her 11-year-old son, Ujjwal, on February 18, 2010. At that time, the police did not find any suicide note. During questioning, her husband, Chander, initially told the police that Aruna was under depression.

But after the postmortem examination, doctors revealed that a suicide note was found scribbled on Aruna's left thigh, following which Chander was arrested.

In the suicide note, Aruna had written that her husband, Chander, his girlfriend, Babita, and her brothers, Pappu and Anil, were responsible for her suicide. Babita and her brothers live in Allahabad.

On the complaint of Ashwani Kumar, the victim’s father, the police booked all four accused.

CTU driver gets three-year jail

The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge RP Yadav today sentenced a CTU driver to three-year rigorous imprisonment in a case of drug peddling. The court sentenced Naib, who was arrested in October 2005 with 12 kg of poppy husk.

A fine of Rs 30,000 has also been imposed on the accused, who was convicted under various sections of the NDPS Act.

According to the prosecution case, the police had arrested Naib with the drug, which was kept under his seat, from Sector 17. A case was then registered at the Sector 17 Police Station.

Accident victim succumbs to injuries

Mohali, May 3
A resident of Phase V, who sustained serious injuries after being being hit by a speeding car, succumbed to his injuries at the PGI in Chandigarh.

According to sources, Devinder Kumar was riding his bicycle when he was hit by an Innova car in Phase III B2. He was taken to a private hospital, where he was referred to Civil Hospital in Phase VI. As his condition was serious, he was then referred to the PGI, Chandigarh, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the car was caught hold of by passersby and handed over to the police. A case has been registered.

Four held for running fake firm

The UT police has arrested four youths for running a fake placement company, Track India, in Sector 34. Two others booked in the case are absconding.

The arrested youths include Kamlesh Thakur, Navdeep, Tabish Ahmed and Vijay Bedi. The prime accused, Amandeep Singh, and his brother-in-law, Ramandeep Singh of Mohali, are absconding. The police said the company was owned by Amandeep and Ramandeep Singh.

The accused had given advertisements in different vernacular newspapers to lure unemployed youths and also registered their fake placement company on some websites.

The accused used to charge fees between Rs 2,000 and Rs 4,000, but did not give any guarantee of job and only assured candidates that their interviews would be arranged with officials of leading companies.

The police said raids were being conducted to arrest the prime accused. A case was registered at Sector 34 Police Station.

Youth held for bomb hoax

The UT police went in a tizzy yesterday evening after an inebriated youth told a girl passing by the Aroma light point in Sector 22 that he had a bomb.

The police reached the spot as soon as the girl informed them about the issue. Investigations revealed that the youth, Ajay, had given a false alarm. He was immediately arrested.

A police official said Ajay was under the influence of liquor and was strolling outside Aroma Hotel on Thursday night. He said Ajay had asked the girl what the time was time. After the girl replied to his question, Ajay told her that he had a bomb and showed her a bag. The girl immediately went to the PCR van stationed nearby.

The police rounded up Ajay, who hails from New Delhi, and checked his bag, which contained a few documents and clothes.

A case was registered against him for criminal intimidation under Sections 504, 507 of the IPC at the Sector 17 Police Station.

Women boxing championship from May 11

The13th Sr and Jr Chandigarh State Women Boxing Championships will be held at PML SD Public School, Sector-32, Chandigarh from May 11.

During the championship, Chandigarh Sr Women Boxing Team will be selected for participation in the 14th Sr National Women Boxing Championship to be held at Khatima, Uttrakhand, from May 18-23.

All the boxers are required to bring their original age certificate at time of weighing, on May 11, at the venue (8 am to 10) and also Medical Book, if already issued by the Federation. —tns

CFA win Manchester Cup

The local team of Chandigarh Football Academy (CFA) bagged the first edition of Manchester United Premier Football Cup for boys (U-15) in Jharkhand, today.

In the final of the tournament,the team defeated their strong rivals, Manipur Football Academy, with a narrow margin of one goal. Along with this, Samuel, the local star striker, for his essential contribution, was also adjudged as the best scorer of the tournament. After this win, the team will now play the All-India level final of the tournament, to be held at Goa on May 8 and 9.

Earlier, in today’s final, the team played a neck to neck clash with their rivals. Taking full advantage of fresh substitutes, the Manipur side managed to score the first goal in 22nd minute and registered an essential lead over CFA team. With a goal down, the team started taking possession and soon Mobasher Rahman, a CFA trainee and Bangalore’s native, scored the equaliser, with smart dodging, in the 30th minute of the game. Soon after the team marched ahead in the 35th minute when Amarjeet scored the leading goal. Manipur’s custodians failed to stop the brilliant powe-packed shot of Amarjeet.

Striker Samuel played his role by contributing 4 goals in two matches. Earlier, in the semifinal match, the team outclassed the Sikkim Football Club 4-0. Even the last year, the team had defeated major sides, including Goa and Mumbai at Jharkhand. With this win, the team will face low-ranking teams of South-west zone in Goa. A total of 9000 teams from across the world are participating in the tourney. The teams after clearing three stages will qualify for the world cup stage.
