Reading between the font size
An e-book may feel nothing like flipping through a classic book, thanks to technology, it has many takers
Jasmine Singh

American composer, musician and film director Frank Vincent Zappa would have loved to read a book each day, but as he said so many books, so little time! And this is where the buck stops— time.

This is where the digital world immediately rushes in with a big bundle of pages, scribbled in black, only you can pack similar kind of such pages of your choice, increase or decrease their font size whenever you want, call for a dictionary with a click… flaunt it as an e-book and move on. There is no taking away the touch and feel experience of the pages of a book, a particular smell of the pages, placing that specially designed bookmark…

“That can be done with an e-book as well,” Radhika Bhutani, student of Mass Communication, PU, Chandigarh, is quick to add. Radhika loves to read, but she hardly gets time to go on a recee to a book store scouting for hours for the perfect book. “I don’t go by the best sellers list. I would rather spend time at a bookstore, go through what is there, and then take a pick. But, I don’t have time,” she shrugs. E books have made things simpler for voracious readers who would rather pack some extra books instead of clothes in their travelling bag.

Most read e-books

* The Gypsy King by Morgan Rush

* Murder At The Ocean Forest by Digger Cartwright

* World War Two, Cause And Effect by Bill Brady

* My Friends Are Dead People 2 by Tony J Ortiz

* A Complete Handbook Of Nature Cure by Shri Bakhru

Harjot Brar, a Patiala based businessman, who deals in wooden furniture, travels for his work to different cities twice a month. “I had heard about Fifty Shades of Grey but I didn’t get time to lay my hands on it. So, I packed in my Ipad along with other books that I have been trying to finish reading,” he says. Those who are gung ho about digital books can somehow pluck various advantages out of it. Nipun Jeet Mann from Mohali, an upcoming Punjabi singer who came from England last year, is a fan of Paulo Coelho’s books.

One of them Like The Flowing River has actually changed his life as he says. “I would any day like to read a printed book, just that the digital ones are so convenient that they have taken precedence. If I can change the font size with the swipe of a finger, it is quite an advantage when I am not carrying my reading glasses.”

With technology unfolding a new package everyday; downloading, connectivity and sharing are words that can be made accessible with a click. The Oxford Dicitonary Of English defines an e-book as an electronic version of a printed book, but e-books can and do exist without any printed equivalent. So, in this case e-books can be read on all sophisticated electronic devices like mobile phones, smartphones or computers. In fact, Bharti Airtel recently launched their prepaid and postpaid 4G services in Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, which means high speed data experience. If we relate it to the e-book, it will help download the content at a high speed. You don’t have to sit for hours to see your book getting transferred slowly.

With all rich talks about technology, there are people who wouldn’t trade the paperback for any hi- end facility. “I have a good collection of books at my home,” shares Manmeet Kaur Kahlon, a homemaker who quit her IT job in Bangalore to be with her family. “We have a book reading club where we talk about new books, discuss writers, borrow books from each other. How can I do it in the same way on a computer or a laptop? I think nothing can replace the sand-and dog earned corners when your book comes back after it has gone through many hands!

It’s a man’s world
Here are a few fashion trends that more and more men prefer nowadays...
Tanya Malhotra

Gaurav Malik When it comes to fashion, there is a lot that can be done with men as well. Starting with hairstyles to patterned beards, piercing and tattoos; we bring the invigorating world of men.

Messy look

While the ‘usual’ is getting a little old and boring, picking a new hairstyle can be a daunting mission and your new look, equally intimidating. But changes are a part of life and the best thing is to go with the flow! Many men follow celebrities when it comes to style - be it David Beckham, Adam Levine, the Jonas Brothers or Jay Sean.

Nitin ChauhanConsider what suits you, what kind of job you’re in, personal interest and of course hair type; the best thing to do is ask your hairstylist what would suit you the most and give it a shot! Remember, styling and conditioning does make a lot of difference to your hair texture.

Moustache man

While clean is what goes for corporates’, the biggest hit of the year has been the Dabangg fame moustache of Salman Khan. “I have always been fond of a moustache. The style has really caught up,” says Ankush Bhatia, owner, Edge Learning Solutions.

With very less time to spend on grooming, making the most of the natural - the messy look. So if you find somebody looking like a yeti in style, don’t think it is a shoot of Cast Away, it is just fashion. “We get a raw feeling while we walk without shaving our faces. And if you flaunt it with your Armani swathe; you’re the talk of the town,” says Gaurav Malik, student, Panjab University.

Piercing thought

The ear piercing of Will smith and Adam Lambert, Lil Wayne’s and Ne-Yo’s chin, eyebrow of Christopher Wayne, tongue piercing of Ben Burnley of the band Breaking Benjamin and nostril of Chris Brown and Bohemia have really inspired our men.

Ankit Midda, DJ, with a tongue and eyebrow piercing, says, “Being a DJ, you become a style icon by design. People follow not just your music, but you as a person.” Nitin Chauhan, owner, Herbuzer Tatoos & Body Piercing, Sector-35, Chandigarh, adds “Apart from these piercing, we have brought in a new concept of piercing extensions for ears in Chandigarh for the very first time. With this, you can extend your pierced gap up to 20 mm.”

Tattoo tag

“More men are obsessed with tattoos than women in the city,” says Nitin. Although, tattoos dealing with religion are popular, the abstract is also being preferred. “I have recently inked full back tattoos of Shiva and Buddha for two men.” What if you want to get rid of the ink? He adds, “We have brought in the technology of tattoo removal through laser, which takes six to eight sittings. With no side-effects, the cost of removing a tattoo is Rs 2,500 per sq inch.”

Over to acting

Trying to get back at him, she allies herself with his wife and another mistress. Mann plays Waldau's spouse, while Upton portrays the other woman of the Danish actor.

The revenge comedy, which reunites Cassavate with his My Sister's Keeper star Diaz, is produced by Julie Yorn and penned by Melissa Stack. The film will start shooting this May in New York. Chitrangada Singh Actress Chitrangada Singh is gearing up for her next film by taking diction and dance lessons. Chitrangada was last seen in I Me Aur Main alongside John Abraham and Prachi Desai. The film, released in early March, did fairly well at the box office.

"I am doing workshop for my next film. I am working on my Hindi and Urdu diction, I am taking diction classes. Also, I am taking dance classes, learning Kathak," Chitrangada said in an interview. The dusky beauty declined to divulge any details about her upcoming film and insisted the producers will make the announcement in this regard.

Adele back in action

Someone Like You hit maker Adele is said to be back in the recording studio, busy working on her next album. According to reports, Adele is finally back to making music after giving birth to her first child and is spending time inside a London recording studio where she'll put herself in "lock down mode" in the coming weeks. The 24-year-old singer is hard at work on her new album, finishing up several songs that will be included in her third album, eyeing a mid-2014 release for it, reported a website.

"Four tracks are finished in terms of writing and she's now laying down preliminary vocals with backing music and singers. The rest of the record will be done in LA. The feel is very much Adele going back to her roots, with some modern jazz and a couple of classic old songs," a source said.

Future Shock
Glass ceiling!

What is Google Glass?

For those who have grown up on Star Trek, our fantasies have come alive in 2013. This year has brought us the Google Glass. It looks dangerously similar to Geordi La Forge's visors in the popular CBS citcom. In fact, Google gave La Forge the opportunity to try their glasses out. His response? "It would be a downgrade".

The contest

The Google Glass has had a unique launch. For those who wanted to try these futuristic eyeshades, you had to enter a contest telling Google "If I had a Glass…". Last week, the Glass was delivered to 8,000 people. That's not all. For those who won, they had to cough up a cool $1500 to finally lay their hands on it.

We last spoke about the smart watches that would make technology second skin. Little knowing that wearable computing would see the light of the day from Google so soon! Google Glass brings the technology of your laptops, phones and tablets right in front of your eyes. It comes with a camera and a display screen on a rim above the right eye. A microphone is settled into the frames of these shades because it follows voice commands.

How it works

Google Glass uses a display technology where your vision includes a dataset via a prism screen. Google had said that the Glass is likely to have a display similar to seeing a 25-inch high definition screen from eight feet away. Google CEO Larry Page has also confirmed that it will be based on Android, which means we will be pairing it with most of our devices.

While no official word has been out yet, it's being said that the glasses will have a display of 640 x 360 and it'll come with a 5 megapixel camera to capture 720p videos. They'll be connectable via Wifi and Bluetooth.

Tech etiquette

On the aside, Google has banned users from reselling or lending out the Glass. Is it about beta testing or making the glasses a status symbol one doesn't know! Google's Eric Schmidt has said that those who will use the Google Glass will have to be responsible on how they use it. He said they would have to "behave responsibly".

GET PHYSICAL
Cool it down
Sachin Kalra

zCooling down is the act of gradually lowering body temperature, heart rate and breathing rate following exercise. The importance and benefits of cooling down after exercise are less well known and practiced even less. What you do after your workout is almost as important as the workout itself. In order to get maximum benefits from your training, an effective cool down should be performed afterwards. An effective cool down maximises the benefits you will gain from the exercise you performed prior to it.

The recovery phase after exercise is crucial for your muscle repair, recovery and strength building. Durations of cooling down can vary for different people but 5–10 minutes is considered adequate.

Benefits of cooling down

A proper cool down provides many benefits. Some of these include:

* Helping your heart rate and breathing to return to normal

* Preventing fainting or dizziness, which can result from blood pooling in the extremities when vigorous activity is stopped suddenly.

* Preparing your muscles for the next exercise session, which enables you to compete again at the same level within a short period of time.

* Removing waste products (such as lactic acid), which can build up during vigorous activity

* Reducing the immediate post-exercise tendency for muscle spasm or cramping.

* Reduces muscle soreness and stiffness.

* Reduce adrenaline levels.

* Maintains flexibility and joint range of motion

pet passion
Bundle of joy
Poonam Bindra

“Muffin was my birthday gift last February after much persuasion and cajoling but now he is more their pet than mine,” tells us young Mannat. Belonging to the aristocratic breed of Pugs, he looked at us with his big black limpid eyes overlooking the typical ‘pug’ up turned and rather an apology of a nose.

After getting the nod from his friend he jumped upon the chair and was all set for the interview. “He is not at all lazy like other pug dogs and loves playing with his toys the favourite being a rag doll and an old toothbrush,” informs the proud young owner. A darling of the whole family Muffin has his own different ways of greeting each member. With Mannat’s father Kanwar he just frisks around him crazily expecting to be taken for his daily evening walk. “We have a set route and fixed time for the walk and Muffin looks forward eagerly to interacting with his friends- a German Shepherd and a St Bernard with whom he must spend good five minutes barking and vigourously wagging his tail .both on different sides of the gate,” quips he. And with the granny it is a caution approach for she treats him to biscuits but also shows him the stick if he touches her bed.

We are also told of his canine failings-” he is very jealous at times and even when we are holding hands he will jump and come in between or does not like it when we hug each other,” tells us Mannat. Also he does not like to sleep on the floor and likes a raised bed and wants to keep his head on the pillow. Unlike some pets this one loves to take a bath .His temper is at it’s worst when he is tied up especially when there are guests for he loves to socialise and gets friendly after an initial small growl. Mannat tells another USP. “He had a very sharp memory and can recognise people he has met six months before.” Muffin indeed seems quite a character and loves to also show off his skills of shaking hands and obeying various commands.

stress buster
Balance your act
Renee Singh

Learning to respond in a balanced fashion to events is a key skill in fighting stress. A generally bad day at work, at home or in general is not really life threatening. The main issue is in acknowledging your problems. Do not ignore them. Many behaviour patterns that are deeply imbedded in our psyche often surface in times of stress.

You may find that many a time in a work situation or even at home  you are not comfortable with a certain situation. Slowly the resentment starts building up and you become angry and intolerant of other people. You have to learn to counter these emotions before stress starts getting the better of you.

This is an easily handled task if you keep the following points in the correct perspective.

Modify your behaviour

Learn to find inner balance and overcome inappropriate behaviour by analysing feelings of unfairness and try to discover and deal with the root of the problem

* You must know exactly what you want and act accordingly.

* Keep your fundamentals clear and prioritise accordingly.

* You must remember you have the right to refuse other people’s excessive demands on your time.

Set your own standards

A common cause of stress is feeling guilty about doing or not doing something. You have to realise that no one is perfect. Keeping very high standards and expectations of yourself makes it difficult to make mistakes.

Accept your mistakes

Try to regard mistakes as a part of a learning curve, you must analyse what went wrong and correct the error. Carrying the burden of having made a mistake and then mulling over it is a sure shot way of creating stress.

Learn to say no

Learn this habit of saying ‘’no’’ graciously. Some people can’t say no because they are afraid to be offensive to others or they feel it may affect their career or relationships. Remember accepting a task you can’t handle can be more damaging to you.

Don’t be in a haste to take decisions

Do not be pressurised into making an important decision. This creates immense pressure later on when you sit down to think as to where you are headed.

Handling anger

Anger is a disabling emotion that produces measurable physical sensations such as an increase in pulse rate and rise in blood pressure. An angry bout might make you feel good momentarily but will disguise the real issue in itself.

Exercise is a short term solution to anger, but to control your anger long term successfully you need to explore the reasons for it.

Train your mind to think positive

In order to maintain a stress free environment at work or at home train your mind to think positively. A positive outlook attracts positive responses from colleagues and seniors which in turn reduces your stress levels. Just as stress can infect a whole team or an individual, it can also be eliminated by a conscious group or individual effort by just thinking positively.

To lead a balanced life you need to establish your priorities, standards and rights and be willing to take the responsibility for your own actions. Go ahead and unwind and enjoy a stress free life.
