Marriage in heaven
When it comes to flaunting flamboyance, especially during the big fat Indian weddings, nobody does it better than Chandigarh folks. While many of you may choose to harbour your thoughts in a rather rhetoric expression of celebrating weddings, there are a few who believe in etching a cut that is defined by much grandeur, pomp and show. And if you are the sort who fancies exquisite tastes, do consider following the footsteps of these couples who took a fashionable turn towards starting their married life.
Lap of mountains The couple: Hail Harpreet Singh and his million-dollar to-be bride, Sazel Singh. While Harpreet is the owner of the Shri Gurdev Group, Sazel just got through with her graduation. “Well both, Sazel and I were close friends and our families decided that we should get married, so ours was an amalgam of love and arranged marriage,” says Harpreet. The grand venue: Wildflower (Oberoi), Shimla The right choice: Harpreet reveals that this is the first destination ring ceremony in the city; he reasons his choice of venue while explaining that he wanted to do something different, “We invited our close family and friends with the idea of giving them a break from the harrowing city routine. Also, a resort wedding makes for a usual run-of-the-mill ceremony, so I wanted to do something entirely different,” he says. The big deal: As many as 250 guests boarded the luxurious heritage train from Kalka to Shimla on the morning of March 2, 2013 and were welcomed at the station with tea, coffee, breakfast and photoshoot. “We stopped for a lunch break at Kandhaghat and reached Wildflower Hall at 3 pm. The function was carried out at the traditional lobby area of Wildflower and was followed by dinner at the banquet and open-lawn area. Also, a folder comprising photography shoot of all the guests was given to everyone at check-out time as a surprise. The following morning, a breakfast party was organised at the Mountain View and we booked over 100 rooms at the hotel,” says Harpreet. Savouring memories: Although Harpreet recollects every moment of sheer joy during the ceremony, he basks in the glory of the fulfilment that the experience brought his way. “It is all about the personal space and time that one needs to enjoy and celebrate an occasion, and this experience was nothing less than a blessing. Besides, Sazel and I spent a lot of quality time with each other, which the ‘to-be married’ couple barely gets,” he quips. By the beach The couple: Rajat and Ridhi Talwar. Although theirs was an arranged marriage, it was ornamental extravagance. The two are presently engaged with their jewellery store—Talwar Jewellers. The grand venue: Grand Hyatt, Goa The right choice: “You know everybody enjoys the wedding except the bride and the groom, and I did not want to deprive myself the glory that this occasion stands for. Also, I wanted to break free from the city life and that is the reason why I opted for Goa. Moreover, I would frequent Goa during the New Year and though I have travelled across the globe, I’ve never been able to find a better place. Therefore, Goa was and will always be my dream destination,” says Rajat Talwar. The big deal: On February 23, 2012, as many as 450 guests arrived at the Grand Hyatt, where they were welcomed with a pre-party, which was followed by the ‘sangeet’ ceremony. On the following day, a rain dance party was organised by the beach during the mehandi function. “We also put up a flea market for the guests where they could pick up Goan stuff for free,” smiles Rajat. The wedding ceremonies continued with much aplomb for four days and the couple was married at the hotel’s private beach. “We booked nearly three-fourth of the hotel,” he laughs. Savouring memories: “I think the best part of the wedding was that we were all wearing a pair of Hawaiian shorts and slippers most of the times; it was more like a holiday, so we enjoyed to the hilt,” says Rajat. Grand valley The couple: Pallavi and Mayank Agarwal had always known each other as family friends. Their parents, who insisted the two get married, propelled their relationship. On June 24, 2012, the couple tied the knot. Mayank is in the power and steel manufacturing sector, and owner of The Gallantt Steel. The grand venue: The Taj, The grand Lalit and SKICC (Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre) in Srinagar. The right choice: “Mine was a summer wedding and the city temperature soars to a degree beyond expression, so I did not want to get married here. We did discuss other options too, but Srinagar seemed like a good option because I wanted a big fat ‘Indian’ wedding,” says Pallavi. The big deal: “We arranged a cocktail dinner and a performance by Mika at the Royal Spring Golf Course to welcome our 600 guests, who arrived at the airport on June 22, 2012. While the Mehandi function in the morning was carried out at The Taj, Mayank and I exchanged rings during the sangeet ceremony the same night. Further, there was an after-party, the Pakeeza Night, at Hotel Lalit, which got over by the next morning,” Pallavi says. “Our wedding ceremony was held at the SKICC and Mayank rode the royal baggi while other guests arrived at the venue by shikaras,” she smiles. Savouring memories: “In Kashmir, the daughter’s wedding is considered to be a very auspicious occasion and I was overwhelmed by the warmth of the locals in that area as they would shower me with blessings.” amarjot@tribunemail.com |

A peep into Tibet
Not all boundaries are barriers; for some lines only define one’s identity, which are an inevitable element of social existence. As Vijay Kranti delves into the socio-cultural and political turmoil that has for long influenced the Tibetans, he celebrates their courage to preserve their identity, while capturing different shades of their existence in the International Tibet Photo Festival, Buddha’s Home Coming, at the Fine Arts Museum, Panjab University, Chandigarh.
“In 1959, a few thousand refugees followed the Dalai Lama into exile in India where they were ensured a proper rehabilitation. Today, India has emerged as the largest reservoir of authentic Tibetan culture and identity in the world. Perhaps, it is this interdependence that kindles my interest in the socio-political bonding between the two nations that I capture on camera,” explains Kranti, as he walks you around the gallery where his photographs are divided into three categorical sections. Meanwhile, the second section of his photographs permeated more meditatively into the psychological commotion faced by the Tibetans; Kranti calls it The Rehabilitation. Maybe it was his spiritual connect or his 40 years of wisdom that stems from his understanding of the region due to his stark contemplation about the same due to his profession. Kranti was a media professional for over four decades and he has worked with various publications and television channels, including BBC TV and ZEE News. “I was always bitten by the political bug,” he says while adding, “Perhaps that is the reason why I took to this photography exhibition, which suggests repression and revolution.” Kranti shows a series of photographs, some of which were clicked during the early 70s, “This one is my favourite,” he says while pointing towards the one that was taken at Majnu ka Tila, Delhi, and was titled, Paradise Lost. However, in the third section of his photographs, one witnesses a shift from the high-end political and economic commotion towards spiritual awakening. “I met Dalai Lama and told him that I was keen on travelling with him to photograph him. In the August of 1980, I received a telegram from his messenger that read that his holiness was travelling to Ladakh and that if I wished to accompany him. I think that was the most beautiful moment of my life.” Kranti has dedicated one of the walls in the gallery to the Dalai Lama as he says, “I am convinced that he is the true soldier of peace and I see him through the effect of his religious sermons on the large number of devotes,” he says.

Catching up with Emraan
Identity crisis
Recently, a woman came to an event looking for me and she claimed that I was her husband who had cheated on her. Fortunately, the police was there and they knew she was looking for Emraan Siddique. I have had weird fan moments but that one was bizarre. People tend to take advantage of stars and we are soft targets. On Danid Tanovic Danis works extremely hard. He plans very well and then pulls it all off. He worked on the script for six years and we shot the film in just forty days! He used to edit the film at night. He even edited No Man’s Land in just seven days. We would shoot our film during the day and he would edit it at night. Little bit of everything I do not purposely try to do thrillers. I like thrillers and I go by the script. I have come out of my comfort zone with the kind of films I am doing and I work with different actors and directors. I have taken a break from horror films now. Bring it on I feel what counts the most is the opinion of the people who spend money on watching movies. Reviews are a perception of one individual. Mostly, critics have been positive about my work so that is good. I get jolted when a film flops and that is when I use criticism constructively and try to learn from my mistakes. At the same time, I can say that movies which got bad reviews did very well at the box office. In the pipeline I have wrapped up Karan Johar’s Ungli and in some time, I will begin working with Kareena Kapoor in a, yet another, Dharma film. I am excited about working with her because she is a brilliant actor. Then I will work on Vikram Bhatt’s thriller so my hands are full.

Sasheh Agha sings too
Pretty and green-eyed debutante Sasheh Agha will make her singing and acting debut together. She was seen in glimpses in the promo including an intimate scene, a kissing scene, and a bikini shot and now she has a song to show off her dancing and singing skills.
The song is titled Barbaadiyaan and has been sung by her and music composer-cum- singer Ram Sampat. It is now on air and is a club song. Sasheh, whose real name is Sara, has learnt singing from her mother and is passionate about it. She thinks it is really cool that she got to sing in her first film. Recently, Ayushmaan Khurrana also made his acting and singing debut in Vicky Donor and sung in Nautanki Saala as well. Sashesh is perhaps the first female debutante in recent times to sing in her debut film. Even her mother Salma Agha sang in her debut film titled Nikaah and mesmerised everybody with her beauty and voice. Like mother, like daughter!

On the wrong side
Actress Gwyneth Paltrow has been accused of “sexualising” children by selling bikinis for four to eight-year-olds on her website. The Iron Man star’s lifestyle website showed pictures of a little girl wearing one of the two-piece creations designed by her new designer Melissa Odabash, reported a publication.
The outfits, which are described as “great for girls who want to look grown up”, have sparked outrage among campaigners who claim the images corrupt children. “We remain very opposed to the “sexualisation” of children and of childhood. The dangers have been discussed at length, so it is a great pity that such trends continue and that they carry celebrity endorsement,” said Claude Knight of Kidscape, a foundation set up to prevent child abuse. This is not the first time Paltrow’s website has caused a backlash. Last year, she was criticised by health experts, for promoting a drastic detox plan, which involves consuming just one low-calorie meal and two protein shakes a day. — PTI

Flavours of tradition
A small twist in flavours can make a dish stand out and an ambience can complete a perfect meal. Kebab Khan, P 3 Restaurant Complex, Sector 5, Panchkula brings to you the best of Mughlai cuisine from the Khyber region.
Yummy flavours Among the newly introduced flavours are the Tawa Murgh with a dash of coriander seeds, which merges the flavours of the Tawa Chargha made in Peshawar and Delhi. Other additions are the Bhuna Gosht, Gosht Seekh Kebab, The Gol Boti Angara paired with the Khasta Parathas and the Chapli Kebab, a master delicacy of the Pashtuns. Celebrity chef Chef Poppy Agha talks about the science of food; how it all converts into a magnificent art. “The look, the taste and the aura really matters. I remember this one time at Foodistan, a show on culinary competition; we had to make makki ki roti with sarso ka saag. There, I made a corn brisket and further made a spinach chutni to go with it. It was just the same essence, but how I transformed and presented it made all the difference.” The celebrity chef is famous for her fusion touch and has won accolades in food shows such as A Taste of Fusion on Dawn News TV, among others. She specialises in Pakistani, South-Indian, French, Italian and Thai cuisine. While she hails from Pakistan, Delhi is like a second home to her. The inspiration We wonder what really inspires her to bring in the amazing recipes. She says, “Eight years ago it was the beauty of the French cuisine. However, the sub-continental food has captivated me time and again. With so much to discover and experiment, this truly is the mother of all food.” Tradition matters While she cooked live to display the new menu of Kebab Khan, she explains, “From kebabs to curry, we have blended the heritage of India and Pakistan. My deliberate attempt not to bring in a fusion was really a difficult decision. However, I wanted to keep the Mughlai culture and taste intact to make sure our future generations know what culture really means. So I have worked with old recipes and given them a more traditional touch.” The difference There is not much difference in the taste of Pakistani and Indian food, she believes, “Except of course the masalas, which is all basically because of the regional difference,” she says. “Interestingly, South-Indian food has fascinated me much and I hope to bring it to Pakistan,” she adds. Price list With price ranging between Rs 355 to Rs 395, it’s worth a Mughlai expedition. Also the new signature dessert Gulkand Ice Cream for a price of Rs 125 is worth a try. With these reasonable options, Kebab Khan is all set to take its customers on a masala sojourn.

Really Bugging!
satish narula Yes, it is very irritating. They are crawling all over; on trees, floor, lawn, walls and even in the inside of the house. Crushed under feet, they leave a yellow spot that remains. People are consulting one and other not knowing actually what to do to get rid of these tiny devils. We are talking about the mango mealy bugs. This is the time when they are about to finish their life and coming down the trees to lay the foundation of the Gen-next! Named the mango mealy bug, the insect is not confined to mango only but is polyphagus. There are more than 60 plant species that are attacked by this insect. April-May is the time when the gravid females start moving downwards the tree to lay eggs in the soil in the near vicinity of the tree trunk. However, as many of the city trees are attacked by this insect, most of these start drifting towards residences. Call it ignorance or poor planning and advice, this is all thanks to the concretisation of pavements; there is no soil in the near vicinity of the trees that have been chocked with paver blocks. In some of the residences too wherever the flooring has been done leaving only the trunk areas open, this kind of spread of the insects is easily visible. I don't want to irritate you more telling that had you taken care in December, you would not have to face this menace. But it is very important for you to understand the life cycle of this insect. If you do not understand it, you will have to face this problem year after year and they will appear with more vengeance. What you see now is a dull white, about a centimetre long insect with waxy body that crawls heavily on the ground. You must be wondering as to how it suddenly appeared on the trees? No, it had climbed up the trees in December-January. At that time the insects were hardly a millimetre in size and had the camouflaging brown colour that merged well with the tree trunk. You did not notice them at that time. Climbing up the trees, they gather near the terminals feeding on the plant sap, devitalising it. There is also premature flower and fruit drop due to this. I will not discuss with you the method to control the insect at that time now as the memory is short and you will forget. I will do it at the appropriate time. However, what to do now? The insects are moving down the trees to enter soil and lay eggs, about four to six inches deep. Immediately after laying eggs the female dies. One way is to spray chemicals to kill the insects before laying eggs in soil, but can you afford to spray all around the house, the walls, the lawn, the vegetable patches and inside of the house? It is better to collect the insects with the help of broom, even dislodging these from the walls and destroying them. As their gate is too slow, it is easily done. Supplement it with the application of methyl parathion powder all around the tree trunk. (Dr Narula is a senior PAU horticulturist) |

It’s time to act
Divya Dutta Call her 'Nirbhaya' or gudiya; the names may change but the hell they go through has been the same - brutally raped and tortured. Be it a twenty-something, who was living her dreams of becoming a physiotherapist and looking after her parents or be it a five-year-old who probably hadn't even begun dreaming.... both have been scarred. Fortunately, this little baby has been saved unlike the young Nirbhaya. What shocks me is that only a beast can do such a gruesome act. Only a devil could rape someone and torture her like this. I wonder whether such heartless souls even think what if such a thing was done to their own blood relations. I don't think they can feel at all! I am seething with anger; the sheer helplessness of being in a democracy. My phone has been continuously ringing to get me into discussions and debates on the top news channels, but this time I don't feel like doing it! What will happen after a discussion? What has happened after the December protests till now? The accused have still not been punished; we are still waiting for proper laws! For all those who accuse women of wearing provocative stuff and inviting rapes, how did a five- year-old do that? Or was she even capable of it? Those who are sick in their minds go defending those who commit such heinous crimes!! Protests yet again and look at how the police is treating the public! An ACP has the audacity to slap a young girl in public rather than arrest her if he found her breaking the law. What is the police doing? They are just scaring and bullying the common man rather than the criminals! Had there been fear of law in the people and the police had brought the guilty to book, the situation would have been different. We would restore our faith back in the government and the police. We have so much of angst inside us and are waiting for action; we stand united for a cause. This time don't hide behind snail-paced laws and say let the law take its own course because by that time we will have another heinous crime on hand! Now is the time to set an example. Let justice prevail this time! (Dutta is a Bollywood actor) |

Kairi ka kamaal
Kandla Nijhowne When the mangoes flood our markets, we grab them hungrily, only to discover that the golden hued fruit is far from ripe underneath the yellow skin. I finally resort to whipping up a mango shake out of the ones that let you down. The best deal is to "do" raw mango instead, for they can't let you down, can they ? In Andhra Pradesh they make a delicious "pulihora" to tantalise the tongue as well as satisfy the stomach. A pulihora is a rice dish with raw mango or tamarind added to give it a kick. You may sneak in vegetables too, and make this a well rounded meal. Dry red chillies introduce heat to the combination, and fried cashews though optional, add extra opulence !
Andhra style Pulihora
* Raw rice 2 cups * Turmeric ½ tsp * Fresh curry leaves 12-14 * Salt to taste *
Chopped or sliced ¾ cup rawmango *
Shakkar 1 tsp * Channa daal 1 tbs * Urad daal 1 tbs * Mustard seeds 1 tsp *
Jeera 1 tsp * Dry red chillies 3-4 * Green chillies 4-5 * Chopped ginger 1½ tsp *
Hing ¼ tsp * Roasted til, 1½ tbsp powdered (optional) * Roasted peanuts ½ cup *
Oil 3 tbsp * Fried cashews (optional) ½ cup
Method Split the green chilies lengthwise. Cook the rice, cool and sprinkle over it the haldi, salt, a tbsp of oil and few fresh curry leaves. Heat the remaining oil, add the mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add dry red chilies, jeera, channa and urad daal and fry for a minute till light brown. Add the slit green chilies, ginger, hing and few curry leaves and fry for a few seconds. Add the raw mango and shakkar and cook the mango till it is quite tender. You may add thinly sliced veggies at this stage, if you so desire. Remove from heat and mix into the seasoned rice. Adjust salt and sprinkle over the roasted sesame seeds powder and roasted peanuts. Combine well, top with fried cashews and serve with yogurt and pickle to make a complete Meal. (Nijhowne is a Chandigarh-based culinary expert)

Making an appearance New pursuit: Jet Set 2
Jet set go Adding some more interesting elements this year, Jet Set 2! will include an exciting on-air promotion, a special Disney branded plane, a unique designer line of renowned Indian designers and a magical two-day holiday at Hong Kong Disneyland for a planeload of families from across India. “Jet Set 2! is an extension of Disney’s mission to bring magical experiences for the entire family that lets them travel together to the ‘happiest place on earth’ – Hong Kong Disneyland,” said Vijay Subramaniam, executive director, Kids Network, Disney—UTV. How do you enter? Kids can enter by spotting an animated Disney branded Jet Airways aircraft April 13 for a month. They can accumulate points each time by dialing a toll-free number flashing on the screen, absolutely free of cost.
Searching for Mr Right Why did you choose to do this show? I am looking for true love and companionship. Television is the best way to break all barriers and find that the right man. Would the auditions for this show interesting to watch? Of course, yes. However, it will be tough for me to handpick the best guys out of the lot. How would you judge the qualities in a person when you meet them on the show? I will have a lot of time to spend with the contestants, on and off camera and there I will see if I can find someone special. You have the image of being bold and blunt. Will we see that too? I am a no-nonsense girl, if I don’t like something I am very vocal about it. They say that if a woman is more successful than a man, the man is unable to handle it. What is your take on the same? It’s really important for my guy to be successful. The channel is looking out for NRIs too.
Great expectations
Twists & turns We also hear that Ashish Sharma will be back on the show in a completely new avatar, that of a guy from a royal background.
The homecoming Family matters: Devoleena Bhattacharjee
