Fake travel agents arrested

The district police has registered separate cases against two fake travel agents for duping their clients of worth lakhs of rupees on the pretext of sending them abroad. Neither the agents returned the money nor send them abroad.

The SSP HS Mann said that one Gurmeet Singh, resident of Cholti Kheri in Morinda complained that a husband wife couple duped him of Rs 3.5 lakhs. The agents took the amount from him for sending him abroad but continued to make false promises and thereafter refused to return the money. The SSP further said that a thorough enquiry was conducted and after that a case was registered against Harinder Kumar and his Wife Anita Rani, residents of Khoje Majra village. Mann said Anita Rani had been arrested, where as her husband Harinder Kumar was still at large.

Meanwhile he disclosed that in another such an incident one Bhupinder Singh, resident of Rampur Kaleran village, complained that two travel agents Kartar Singh, resident of Agar Nagar, Ludhiana and Sarvkar Singh, resident of Shimla Puri, Ludhiana, had taken Rs 3.80 lakhs from him for sending him to Canada. But neither they sent him to Canada nor they returned money. The SSP said that a case was registered after an enquiry and resultantly one of the travel agents had been arrested, where as Sarvkar Singh was still at large and would be arrested soon.

17 colonisers booked

The district police has registered FIRs against 17 colonisers for carving out plots and selling them in an unauthorised manner by violating the PUDA norms. These cases have been registered under Section 36(1), 36(3) of the Punjab Apartment and Property Regulation Act and Section 420 of the IPC on the complaint of PUDA JE, Patiala.

HS Mann, SSP said that the district police received a complaint from PUDA to register the case against certain colonisers, who sold the plots by laying out illegal colonies. He said that he directed the respective SHOs to enquire the matter. Mann said these persons were found violating PUDA norms so the cases against 17 persons had been registered.

Those booked by police include Rajiv Bansal, Ajit Singh, Baltej Singh Khokh, Sanjeev Goyal, Pargat Singh, Dinesh Kumar, Ajay Gupta and Rakesh Kumar all residents of Nabha. In another case police booked Baldev Singh, Kulwant Singh, Sher Singh and Daljeet Singh all residents of Dashmesh Nagar Nabha. In a third case police booked Balbir Singh, Harpreet Singh, Narinder Singh, Swarn Singh and Manohar Lal all residents of Kishne Wali in Amloh.

Chargesheet filed against accused

Chandigarh, April 17
The UT police today filed a chargesheet in court in connection with the theft of valuables worth Rs 18 lakh from Hotel Park Plaza in February this year. The police has filed a chargesheet against Ramesh Bhanaji Chhag and his accomplice Jayesh R Sejpal is still on the run.

The accused was staying at Hotel Attawa and had come to Park Plaza after conducting a recce on the day they committed the theft. The police said the two of them have committed thefts at many hotels in over half a dozen prominent tourist states including Gujrat, Jodhpur, Chennai, Vijaywada, Karnatka, Punjab and Chandigarh. — TNS

Chandigarh SSP deposes in court

Chandigarh, April 17
Chandigarh Senior Suprintendent of Police (SSP) Naunihal Singh today appeared in the CBI court and gave his statements in connection with a case registered against an assistant sub-inspector and two constables of the PO cell last year.

Since the SSP is the sanctioning authority in the case, he gave his statements to the court that he had accorded the sanction which was required for prosecution.

The CBI had last year arrested ASI Deshraj, head constable Vajjinder Singh and constable Mange Ram for taking bribe in two separate cases.

contempt plea
Hearing in case against Home Secy, IGP adjourned

Chandigarh, April 17
The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) today adjourned the hearing of the contempt petition filed against the UT Home Secretary, Anil Kumar, and Inspector General of Police, RP Upadhyaya, to Thursday.

Over 11 UT police women constables had moved to the tribunal alleging discrimination by their senior officials and sought the tribunal to direct the department to send them on training.

The women constables said owing to discrimination, they were not sent for lower school training course at Madhuban for which the last date of reporting was April 18.

In July 2012, the tribunal had ordered that the constables should be sent for the lower school training course at Madhuban on the basis of seniority.

The contempt petition stated that according to an order issued on April 5 this year, the police department had deputed 313 constables for the lower school training. — TNS

Chief Engineer
Filling up of post stayed

Chandigarh, April 17
The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) today stayed filling up of the post of the Chief Engineer, Chandigarh, on deputation. The tribunal had issued notice to the UT Administration on the application filed by MP Singh, UT Superintendent Engineer, who had moved CAT, demanding directions to the Administration to consider him for the post of Chief Engineer.

Singh, in his application before the tribunal, said as per the rules, he was eligible for promotion to the post of Chief Engineer and should be considered for the appointment. The application has been adjourned for the next hearing on May 2 when the UT Administration is expected to file reply.

Property dealer held for attack on man, daughter

A week after man and his daughter were brutally attacked at their residence in a society in Sector 50, the police today arrested the accused property dealer Pankaj Partap Singh in the attempt to murder case. The accused was evading arrest all these days. He was arrested from Sector 43 bus stand today.

The accused will be produced before court tomorrow and the police will procure his police custody and question him on the reasons for attack.

During preliminary interrogation, the accused told the police that he was hired for the sale of the flat belonging to Suresh Kumar Sharma six months ago. The property dealer spent over Rs 50,000 from his own pocket and had a grudge against SK Sharma as he was not settling down for a deal with any customer. Pankaj was in a severe financial crisis and got enraged when Sharma refused to settle down for the deal. He then attacked Sharma and his daughter who tried to intervene. The incident had occurred on April 9 when the duo was attacked with sharp edged weapons at their residence in a society in Sector 50 in broad daylight. Sixty one-year-old SK Sharma was critically injured and his daughter too sustained injuries.

At the time of occurrence, accused Pankaj Pratap Singh, a Sector 22-based property dealer had managed to flee from the spot.

The incident had occurred in the afternoon on that day when Suresh, who retired from Punjab Turbo Ltd was at his home with his 31-year daughter, Shveta Sharma.

The accused barged into his house on the first floor flat of Sharma to discuss the property deal worth over Rs 2 crore. The discussions soon went awry and heated arguments began which soon turned violent.

Pankaj then attacked Sharma on his face and stomach with a sharp edged weapon. His daughter Shveta Sharma tried to intervene and she too was attacked by the accused. The accused had come in a red coloured Etios car which he used to flee after attack.

Soaked in blood, Suresh rang the doorbell of his neighbours but no one was at home. He then ran downstairs and rang the doorbell of the ground floor accommodation. By the time the door was opened, a schoolteacher noticed him and rushed him to a hospital.

17 more vehicles recovered from thieves

The number of stolen vehicles recovered by the crime branch of the UT police after a gang of auto thieves was busted earlier this month has reached 35. Of the 18 vehicles which were recovered earlier, the police had managed to trace owners of only eight of these.

The police has also arrested two more members of the gang, Kuldeep and Balram, while five had been nabbed earlier. These included Parveen Kumar, Shamsher, Shahnawaj, Asim, and Irfan. During the interrogation, Shamsher helped in the recovery of another 10 vehicles, including a tipper, three Bolero jeeps, two Indigo cars, one Tata Safari, two Swift cars and one Wagon-R.

Shamsher disclosed that the gang used to sell the stolen vehicles to one Kuldeep, a resident of Sonipat in Haryana, and Balram Ratwana, alias Rahul, of New Delhi.

With their arrest, the police also recovered a Scorpio jeep, two Bolero jeeps and two Indigo cars. In addition to these, two vehicles stolen from Chandigarh were recovered from Kuldeep.

DSP (Crime) Satbir Singh said Parveen Kumar was the kingpin of the gang, who after stealing the vehicles used to hand them over to Shamsher, Shahnawaj, Asim and Irfan for tampering the engine and chassis number and preparing fake documents. There on, vehicles were passed on to Kuldeep and Balram, who sold these vehicles.

Woman held in murder case

Mohali, April 17
The sleuths of Punjab State Crime Cell today arrested a woman, involved in a murder case at Amritsar, here today. The accused, identified as Gurnam Kaur from Bachchiwind Lopuke village, Amritsar, was wanted for the murder of her daughter-in-law.

The police said that a case under Sections 302, 201, 363, 366A and 120B was registered against the accused, her husband Jasbir Singh and her son Sarbat Singh at Punjab State Crime Cell at Phase 4 here on April 3, 2013. Sarbat Singh, who is also husband of the victim, and Jasbir Singh are still at large.

Inspector Harjinder Singh said that Sarbat Singh got married to the victim (who was minor then) in 2009. "After a few months, the victim had received burn injuries following a stove burst. The victim was taken to Guru Nanak Hospital from where her in-laws had brought her home against advice of doctors. The victim had died at home due to lack of treatment", said Harjinder Singh. He further said that she was cremated without giving any information to the police, which was mandatory in such cases.

Following the complaint of the parents of the victim, the crime branch of Amritsar Police had also initiated an enquiry in this regard.

The accused was produced before the Mohali court today from where she was sent to judicial custody.

Man loses Rs 82,000

In another incident of card cloning, K Jagdishwar Singh resident of Sector 36-A, holder of HSBC credit card reported to the police that he had been defrauded of Rs 45,500, Rs 230 and Rs 36,650 on April 10 through card cloning. K Jagdishwar Singh, working with Bhakra Beas Management Board claimed that in all Rs 82,380 had been withdrawn from his account.

He came to know of the withdrawals through three SMS alert on mobile. Jagdishwar claimed he tried to contact HSBC bank on their customer care numbers of Chandigarh and New Delhi. He added that contacting the numbers was of no help. Ultimately Jagdishwar sent an e-mail to the HSBC Bank to block the card as he had not used the card.

The resident said next day the bank informed him that purchases had been made on-line at Bharti Retail, Jalandhar. He lodged a complaint at Sector 36 police station. Jagdishwar claimed he had used the credit card at a petrol pump which he apprehended had been cloned.

P’kula youth attacked with knife
Seriously injured, police suspects involvement of wife’s family

Panchkula, April 17
A 23-year-old resident of Sector 19 suffered serious injuries when he was allegedly stabbed by his wife’s relatives near the Baltana-Panchkula border here this morning. The victim, Alle Nadi, alias Aalam, had married a girl from a different community against wishes of her family, a year back.

Aalam was rushed to the General Hospital, Sector 6, from where he was referred to the PGI, Chandigarh, where his condition is said to be serious. A case has been registered by the police.

Aalam was having tea at a stall near the Kali Mata temple, when three youths reached there and entered in a heated argument with him. Two of them stabbed him brutally with knives, said Inspector Suirinder Kumar, station house officer of the Sector 20 police station.

Aalam rushed to save his life, with the accused in a hot pursuit. The accused left a knife smeared with blood at the spot. It has been seized by the police.

Sources said the girl was forcibly taken away by her brothers four days back. The police suspects the involvement of her family members in the incident. The police could not locate the girl.

Man’s body found in park at Sector 28

Chandigarh, April 17
A body of 30-year-old man was found under mysterious circumstances at a park in Haryana Panchayat Bhawan in Sector 28 today morning. The deceased has been identified as Baljit Singh.

The police sources said that Baljit was working as a security guard in the park and was on duty last night.

The police sources added that there were some injury marks on his body and the exact cause of death will be ascertained only after the postmortem report.

The victim was a patient of epilepsy and his parents were looking for him when they were informed of the body. They noticed injury marks while performing final rites in Pulsora village, and called the police after which they handed over them the body of the deceased.

The police has started the investigation and shifted the body to the GMSH-16. The post mortem examination of the body will be conducted tomorrow, added the police sources.

Accident victim succumbs to injuries

A woman, who was injured after being hit by a truck in Mani Majra on April 6, succumbed to her injuries here on Sunday. The victim was identified as Bitoli Devi, a resident of Mani Majra. The police soruces said that Bitoli was injured after carats fell on her head from a truck No. (HR-37D-7319).

She was standing near the truck as a result, she received severe head injuries on April 6. Bitoli was rushed to the PGI from where she was discharged after treatment on April 9. Later, she died at her residence on April 14. The police has booked the truck driver for death due to negligence.

PG rules violation
Mauli Sarpanch arrested

Local police today arrested Avtar Singh, Sarpanch of Mauli village for flouting the rules while giving his house to paying guests here. A case under Section 188 IPC has been registered against Avtar Singh at Mataur Police Station.

Notably, the police had arrested around eight youngsters from Avtar Singh's residence at Phase 3A on April 13. The youngsters were found taking drugs there. "Avtar Singh was running illegal PG accommodation at his residence, which was being used as den by these drug addicts", said the police official.
