Love potion
Upcoming film Ishq Brandy, directed by Amit Prasher introduces adventure sports for the first time in Punjabi cinema
Jasmine Singh

Sam Mendes, best known for directing American Beauty that earned him best the Academy and Golden Globe award for best director, has a knack of reinventing. With films in particular, the only funda he abides by is keep exploring. "I am not about to choose a series of movies in which I can use the same bag of tricks and style that I used in my first film," he had mentioned at an award function once.

Punjabi film director, Amit Prasher remembers this piece of information, and believes in using it to the hilt. After the success of his first Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22, the director is all set to dig into the rich Punjabi cinema, which he believes has immense potential. In Chandigarh, to talk about his next film Ishq Brandy (working title) starring Roshan Prince, Alfaaz and Binnu Dhillon, the director along with the star cast and the producers of the film Amit Mann and Dimple Mittal, has something different in mind - their film will be shot at holiday destination Mauritius. This is the only film after Jatt & Juliet that will be extensively shot outside Punjab. Amit has plans, which starts by a funda 'no repetition'.

Fresh take

He has a number of first times attached to his first film, and this time without making a deliberate attempt Amit Prasher has something different for the movie Ishq Brandy. "Punjabi cinema is a reservoir for talent that is available in the form of acting, story writing and direction," shares Amit who gradually moves on to talking about his next venture with the working title Ishq Brandy. "Punjabi cinema has explored stories on friendships, this one, however, for the first time will bring three different actors entangled in three different love stories." Amit is warming up, he has more information to spill that will bring in the first time element again! "Cinema is a creative attempt and I want to bring in something new and fresh with my project. The movie is going to be shot in Mauritius to a large extent and this is for the first time that we will raise the adrenaline of the audiences by showing them some never seen before adventure sports in the Punjabi film,' adds Amit who feels the success of his first venture went entirely on the cast and crew and the technicians. "Just about everybody on the sets made it possible," he adds.

Write deal

Rupinder Singh, the writer of movie is otherwise a shy man, he would rather stand and watch the events unroll. But when it comes to writing the plot for Ishq Brandy, there is no holding back the scriptwriter. "Comedy and romance are the main ingredients for every story. The challenge for any writer is to be different in this as well," shares Rupinder who completed his M Sc (Hons) in Anthropology before moving to Mumbai. "This film is actually about three friends with a tagline "You don't need an enemy if I am your friend". Packed with three different flavours of romance, three different meanings of friendship and three different colours of love, it's a one film which stands for everyone who has been in a situation of friendship vs love. It's a comedy with a big heart and a bigger smile," he winds up his take.

Actor calling

Multi star cast films interest the audiences, at the same time, they can also be wee threatening in terms of screen space for the actors. Both Alfaaz known for his hit numbers Hai mera dil and Roshan Prince along with Binnu Dhillon find it rather interesting and a challenge in a funny way. Says Roshan, "A film is not about a single character, it is a collective effort put together by everyone involved. As a singer actor I will take up subjects that excite me and the concept of three friends is interesting, at least, I get to play pranks and do masti, something that I miss with my old friends," adds the actor, who has groomed himself pretty well.

Money matters

Ishq Brandy being made under Future Cine Vision Pvt Ltd is the first movie to bring in the adventure sports. Amit Mann, one of the producer likes to take part in the entire creative process. "Every movie has to work within given budget, but if everything is planned before hand the movie flows in order. Amit Prasher is a director who acknowledges this fact."

The pleasure of creating
The artistes of the Train Theatre performed on the second day of International Puppet Theatre Festival
Tanya Malhotra

The artistes of the Train Theatre were in Chandigarh to perform on the act The Cube Circus on the second day of International Puppet Theatre festival at Tagore Theatre on Sunday.

Circus as we all know has the muscle to entertain us on different levels. And when it's served in a platter of a visual art to tickle the international audience, the question they ask is 'Can you breathe with all the laughter? To top it up is the addition of abstract objects. However, the articulate connection to the audience without a word being spoken is the part that just stands out.

The name game

The theme they chose is quite similar to a circus, where one act comes in the way of another with basic idea of entertaining the audience. "Adding a modern concept of the cubes with the idea of the metamorphosis of shapes during the act makes it even more interesting." says Landa Nir, the actor.

The concept

"It's just the trivial situation transformed into a pleasant one. What we don't pay attention to, usually, in our busy life is brought forward," says Renana Lotem Ophir, the actor. She adds, "It simply depicts the message of acceptance of differences; there is no rocket science behind it." Dov Meilnik, the lighting designer further adds, "It's all easily understandable. In our act, the cubes become elaborate characters." Why the cube we wonder? He shares, "Theoretically a two dimensional shape is what comes in your mind. But in the practical world, if a form comes to life, it automatically becomes 3D, it is a new and a fresh concept. Our director, Galia Levy-Grad researched on the transformation of paper, popularly known as origami. We can all understand how her contemplation further moved towards the 3D concept."

Different levels

"It speaks to the audience on different levels. While you go with it, you will make your own story!" he laughs, "But there sure is a story.

The beauty of it is the international connect," says Dov while he adds, "I would rather not term it as a conclusion because that would mean the end. Let's just say that it works on different levels. It's simple yet genius, stupid yet smart. It speaks to one and all."

Show must go on

“This art is reviving with a global appeal. While the tradition remains, new concepts and modern ideas add to the progression," says Dov. He adds, "A child reacts as a child when he looks at something funny. So, we never have faced any difficulty in presenting our show internationally”, says Dov

stress buster
Learning along the way
renee singh

Learning from your mistakes is perhaps one of the best ways of relieving stress. Although we might find it hard to differentiate between things which are our fault and those that are someone else's fault, in any of these cases stress might be affecting our lives.

There are of course no easy answers on how one can learn from one's mistakes, we cannot even find any hard and fast rules to it. Although enough has been written on how to live our lives in a stress free fashion, there has been no fixed or permanent strategy to do so though. Yet, there are many strategies which can be used in various situations and they do work. While trying to learn from your mistakes you should definitely consider the following aspects.

Reframe your mistakes

Change the way you look at something and this is a sure way of changing your experience of it. Reframing can help you see a negative event as a learning experience. It can alter our perception of stressors and thus relieve a significant amount of stress. It can create a lot of positive changes in our life without actually making any changes in our circumstances.

See what you can change

Make the concept of learning from your mistakes an empowering experience. Rather than wasting time in finding who is responsible for a situation, try and view the situation as a whole in terms of how you can change it.

Look beyond

Try and view the situation from a different angle. How do others view the situation? Think of what the situation could have been if you had made different choices. Try and figure how you could behave next time.

Be forgiving

When we do not want to own up to our mistake then we try and play the blame game. We like to stay in denial because we hate to accept that we have made a mistake. Just be forgiving towards your ownself, change your perceptions towards the situation. This makes it less threatening to realise whether you are responsible or partially responsible for things not ending up as planned. That makes you learn from your mistakes.

Ask questions

Have a few trusted friends who understand you well and who will tell you the truth about yourself and who can objectively see things. Sometimes we are so close to a situation that we cannot judge it from an objective point of view. Here we need a good friend to point our mistakes so that we may be able to resolve them and deal with whatever comes our way.

Pat yourself on the back

Congratulate yourself for whatever growth you've made through dealing with each difficult situation. Remember your mistakes, add value to your life as much as the other positive experiences that we cherish. It is indeed a joy to discover that one actually has the opportunity to learn from one's mistakes and get into a stress free state of existence.

Take advantage of the Stress Awareness month and since April is the officially declared stress awareness month, it makes an excellent time to really focus on becoming aware of the stress in your life. It affects on your body and mind, find ways to minimise it. Use this month as time to delve into yourself a little deeper so that you can become aware of your own stress levels. Try and connect with others in order to share questions and advice and support.

Splash of colours

In today’s digital age, some students along with experts spent a day in green mastering strokes. The Chitkara School of Planning and Architecture, Chitkara University Punjab, conducted a one day Water Colour Workshop on Baisakhi at Leisure Valley - 10, Chandigarh.

The workshop was organised by Nitin Dutt and well know water colour artist Bheem Malhotra was invited as the subject expert. The workshop was organised as part of the field work for the course of Visual Arts and Basic Design - II, offered during the second semester of the Bachelor of Architecture Program at the Chitkara University, Punjab.

As expressed by Nitin Dutt, the workshop aimed at inculcating a deep interest among students for the medium of water colours and developing proficiency in its use. Armed with such an efficient, representational and expressive tool, students would further deploy these skills towards visually enhancing their architectural presentations.

The workshop also addresses the important issue of sensitising students towards more direct and traditional mediums and methods of visual representation that are being overlooked in the new digital age. — TNS

Master Chef
Food goes festive !
Kandla Nijhowne

There's fast-food, and there is fast -food. One is sinfully rich and calories laden, quickly turned out at cafes and roadside carts ; the other fast-food is what "vrat" keepers consume during Navratraas and other festive times. We bring our fasting friends a refreshingly different version of a Swedish delicacy called Roesti. It can be made with sweet potatoes or the good old potato itself.

Sweet potato Pan Pizza

Ingredients

  • 500 gm sweet potatoes or potato, peeled
  • 1-2 green chillies, chopped
  • "Saindha namak" to taste
  • 1 tbsp grated ginger
  • 3 tbsp sabudana
  • 2 tbsp ghee or oil

Optional additions:

  • 100 gm paneer,crumbled
  • 2-3 tbsp cashews or almonds
  • 2 tbsp "raamdana"
  • 2-3 tbsp chopped "makhaana"

Method

  • Grate potato (or sweet potato), squeeze out excess moisture.
  • Soak the sabudaana briefly, then add to the grated mixture along with ginger, chillies and seasoning.
  • Heat oil in a heavy frying pan.
  • Shape the mixture into a large mound. Place in the middle of the hot pan, and then flatten out so that it looks like pizza.
  • Cover and cook for 3-4 minutes or until the grated bits are firm and fused.
  • Use a wide spatula to flip over the "pizza" and cook further. The surface should look golden brown by the time it is done.
  • Remove carefully and cut into wedges.
  • Serve with chutney or a fruit-salsa as a side dish.

The inside story

Past imperfect: John Abraham and Priya Runchal Bipasha Basu has been going on and on about John Abraham's deceptive ways in her interviews since their split. John Abraham has maintained a dignified silence about the same. His friend spills the beans on their split which happened over two years ago.

From the beginning

The relationship between John and Bipasha was highly unstable and they broke up much before it became public. They had broken-up earlier too but patched up over the years. A lot is being said about John cheating on her with Priya Runchal but that is far from the truth.

Couple of denials

It was Bipasha Basu who cheated on John Abraham with Josh Hartnett, her co-star from Singularity. She also had a fling with Saif Ali Khan much earlier when her relationship with John was on the rocks. It was her fling with Josh that drove them apart for good.

Done and over

John is upset that Bipasha is laying false allegations against him. His family and friends know that he is miffed with her and wishes she would move on and leave him alone. He is in a happy space with Priya and wants to marry her this summer. He wishes Bipasha well. Also, he hasn't played any part in her not getting a song in Shootout At Wadala. He wants to be left alone and enjoy his life.

No matter what

Star dust: Jennifer Lopez Jennifer Lopez's ex-husband Cris Judd says that the singer-actress wasn't always easy to work with.

Lopez was married to Judd for nine months in 2001 and the dancer admits that the 43-year-old is still a "diva" for him, reported a publication. "The most respected one would have to be Diana Ross. It was a pleasure to work with her and we all called her Miss Ross. But, of course, Jennifer is a diva! She's an amazing performer and a confident professional. She's always striving to be better. You have to respect that," Judd said. Despite their short-lived union, he insists that the two are still on good terms. "I was doing a tribute for Michael Jackson and I saw her in the audience. We kind of waved at each other and that was it.” —PTI

The other way round

Quotable quote: Taylor Swift Singer Taylor Swift, who has dated a string of men like Joe Jonas, Taylor Lautner, John Mayer, Jake Gyllenhaal and most recently Harry Styles, says she does not go for famous guys, rather they are attracted to her.

The 23-year-old said in an interview that famous men are not necessarily her "type", reported a publication. "It's not like I go for people in the entertainment industry. Those have been the types who have kind of gone for me recently," she said.

When asked if she is worried that her confessional songwriting style could put people off dating her, she said, "You never know who doesn't ask you out. But I'm not scared of it. Because I know that I'm not going to stop writing songs about my life. So if someone's scared of that, then that's not going to work anyway." Her brief relationship with Harry Styles attracted a lot of media attention. It was reported, that soon after their split, Swift had begun working on a song about the One Direction singer. — PTI

I can’t do a bikini right now: Drew Barrymore

Charlie's Angels star Drew Barrymore, who gave birth to her first child with rock legend Kurt Cobain last year, is back in her pre-baby shape.

The 38-year-old actress, however, is not yet ready to don a bikini, reported a publication. "I'd rather kill myself than get into a bikini right now!... I take care of myself, but I'm never going to be the person who talks about diet and exercise. I would fail that conversation," she said.

Barrymore also opened up about the changes she experienced as a mother-to-be. "I got a wonderful little goatee, and it was red! I also got hyperpigmentation on my cheeks," she said. — PTI

Neha Dhupia, on her D-day

After having tied the knot onscreen several times, actress Neha Dhupia now wants to have a simple wedding in real life. "I am not quite sure if I want to have a grand wedding.

In the film industry, we are getting married every two months, be it in the media, in films or on the ramp. I feel that the day I actually get married, I will be too bored and end up in a very simple and plain outfit for the D-day," Dhupia said.

The 32-year-old actress walked the ramp at the ongoing India International Jewellery Week and looked like a bride in a Pam Mehta peach and green lehenga, which she teamed up with a kundan necklace, earrings, maangtika and a statement ring.

When asked about her D-day, Dhupia said, "My wedding outfit will depend on where I am getting married, whether the weather is too hot or cold. I don't want to be decked up in jewellery from top to bottom because there is also the heavy lehenga, elaborate make-up. I would not want to be weighed down. I want to be comfortable on my wedding day." She also believes in keeping accessories minimal, for a maximum impact. Dhupia will be next seen in Jimmy Shergill's Punjabi production Rangeelay, which is slated to release on May 16. Besides that, the actress is also doing Renzil D'Silva's Ungli, which also features Sanjay Dutt, Emraan Hashmi and Randeep Hooda. — PTI

Pop sensation Lady Gaga will pay for a disabled fan's hip replacement surgery. The 27-year-old singer herself underwent an operation on February 20 to treat a hip injury which prompted her to cancel the remaining dates of her Born This Way Ball world tour, reported a publication.

A devotee named Emma, who suffers from scoliosis and hip dysplasia, reached out to the star to offer her support and Gaga was so touched that she named her wheelchair after her new friend. Now Gaga is sending Emma to see her surgeon and promised to cover the costs of her next operation.

"Gaga herself reached out to me and is hooking me up with her team of doctors, plus others, that did her surgery in NYC as I have been needing a hip replacement for quite some time (my left hip dislocated almost two weeks ago too..

"I know, perfect timing, right?... We're planning on flying out this weekend, all expenses paid, for a consult. She won't be there, but the gesture is absolutely incredible and I broke down sobbing immediately afterwards... Words can't describe how incredibly blessed I am... I would like to send a massive thank you to Gaga, her entire team, as well as (Gaga's parents) Cynthia and Joe for doing an incredible job of raising the most beautiful person I know," Emma posted on Twitter.

Gaga is slowly making a recovery after spending weeks confined to her wheelchair and was even photographed walking around New York City in high-heeled shoes earlier this month. —PTI

Out of the box
The creative teams have started coming up with unique and unusual ways to launch the first look of their movie. Some of the recent examples are...

Reel to real

Earlier, The Dirty Picture, was launched at a single screen theatre Gaeity and then promoted at a racecourse as some of the scenes were shot at a racecourse. There was also a ramp show at the racecourse, which Vidya Balan attended.

Old is gold

Lootera is an upcoming Bollywood romance drama set in the 50's and directed by Vikramaditya Motwane. The film features Ranveer Singh opposite Sonakshi Sinha in the lead roles. To highlight the period, in which the movie is set in, the launch of first look took place in the oldest cinema of Mumbai, in Liberty Cinema.

Far-fetched

Directed by Dilip Ghosh, Commando has Vidyut Jamwal and Pooja Chopra playing the lead. The movie is about an action packed life of a commando. So to highlight the action in the movie, the first promotion had Vidyut performing live stunts. It was quite an unusual sight for a movie launch.

Out to scare

Ek Thi Dayaan is an upcoming horror film directed by Kannan Iyer. The film features Emraan Hashmi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Huma Qureshi and Kalki Koechlin.

The movie's first look was launched in Film City Goregaon in the scariest way possible. Emraan was dressed up like a magician and the three actresses Huma, Kalki and Konkana dressed up in a daayan's avatar. Emraan even performed a few magic tricks which were quite impressive. He learnt them especially for the launch.

Down the memory lane

Upcoming flick Fukrey, produced by Farhan and Ritesh, is about the wild life of four college boys. They wanted to underline the college element in the movie. Hence the duo, Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani have decided to have a grand trailer launch at a college, while serving only samosa and chai to their guests.

Confessions of the busy on-screen bahu

Frankly speaking: Deepika Singh Deepika Singh is experiencing a creative high while essaying the role of Sandhya, an intelligent bahu, in the show Diya Aur Baati Hum. As she plays the role with aplomb, she reveals a bit about herself while exchanging an interesting banter with us.

Why are you so media shy?

I am not shy; I am an introvert. It's just that I can barely spend any time for myself while working with the daily soap. Moreover, I like it when my work speaks for myself, being written or vocal about the same is not my priority.

Did you get any offers to be a part of other shows too?

Yes, I have been offered to be a part of several reality shows, but I want to focus only on Diya Aur Baati Hum for now. I don't want to do a half-hearted job elsewhere.

There have been reports of you throwing tantrums on sets. Are they true?

Well, I don't know where did that came from! In fact, I am friends with all my co-stars, including Anas Rashid (Suraj) and Neelu Waghela (Bhahboo). So, I don't understand these rumours.

Do you interact with your fans?

Yes, I do and in fact, I find it very amusing when my fans talk to me as if I were Sandhya and not Deepika. They ask me how will I get through with my studies and other things happening in the show.

You were recently seen at the IPL ground giving away awards. How was that feeling? Are you a cricket fan?

Yes, I enjoy the sport and watch when I can. The experience at the IPL was great. The vibe in a stadium is unlike any other.

Banishing over-the-top drama

Coated with laughter: Ragini with the contestants Of India’s Best Dramebaaz Thankfully, the judges of India's Best Dramebaaz, including Anurag Basu, Sonali Bendre and Vivek Oberoi are not encouraging any extra rona dhona! In order to keep the kids in the right frame of mind while helping them to deal with the inevitable eliminations in a healthy way, the judges, anchors and the creative team have infused a lot of comedy. This ensured that in addition to the Top 12 contestants, who were promoted to the next "class" of the "acting academy", the six of them who went back home, left the show with a smile! Anurag Basu said, "This is the first reality show where I see smiling faces even on the elimination day. Kids need to be-tackled very carefully so that their feelings are not hurt!" Vivek Oberoi echoed Anurag's sentiments, saying, "The kids today are not just better actors but stronger human beings too!" Rithvik Dhanjani, appeared on stage with a slanted hat and a mandolin like Shah Rukh Khan of DDLJ, while the little boys of the Phataka team joined him to deliver their favorite SRK dialogues. Equally amusing was the skit of the Dhamaka team as the kids dressed broke out of eggshells and argued about who came first, the chick or the egg? Enthused by the comical skit, Anurag Basu joined the kids on stage and danced to the popular song 'Ande Ka Funda'. The judges also participated in a race where they held a spoon in their mouth and safely carried the egg till the finishing point without breaking it. While Sonali Bendre won the race, fellow judges, Vivek and Anurag, were seen complaining of foul play, claiming that she had stuck the egg to her spoon using her chewing gum! Seem like these judges know how to sugar coat bitter situations while establishing a strong moral ground.
