A musical enquiry
Music producer and guitarist Sahej Bakshi aka Dualist Enquiry says the audience in Chandigarh is especially receptive to electronica…

Manpriya Singh

Sahej Bakshi
Dual theory: Sahej Bakshi

He’d let the music take centrestage and the person in him step back, so much so that when the sounds play, everything else ought to be mute, even the identity. Sahej Bakshi would rather be known as Dualist Enquiry, as “being known by the name can be too personal.” Never mind having to justify the conscious decision once again!

“When people think of me, I want them to think of music first,” says the music producer and guitarist, in Chandigarh for a performance at the Blue Blazer. “Dualist Enquiry, moreover, is a name that everybody understands and yet it is open to their individual interpretations. I want them to develop their own connect and then move ahead,” shares the pass-out from Thornton Music School at USC in Los Angeles, CA.

It all started from the compulsory extra-curricular activities back in school. “I started playing the guitar when I was in Class IX and have to credit totally to my school, Vivek High School, for that.” And the rest, as they say, is history.

Names like Berlin Music Week, The Great Escape Festival, UK, Burn Sasha Tour Remix Competition…sit pretty in his resume as do the achievements like having opened for music sensations like Beardyman and DJ Shadow. “We last performed at India Bike Week at Goa and Sulafest 2013.”

He adds, “Performing at festivals is like an experience. The energy is different and the entire music community comes together. Moreover, for how many people at a time can you play while at any club? Not more than four hundred. During music festivals, there’s no such kind of limitation.”

While not entertaining the crowds, it’s just switching back to some classic electronic music and settling down with a playlist that comprises Chemical Brothers, Koan Sound, Amon Tobin, Soulwax, among others.

“I’ve also been listening to recently released underground music.”

It’s been over half-a-decade of on and off gigs in the city, while watching the music tastes evolve, slowly but steadily.

“I like coming here and performing once every six months. The audience is receptive to electronica. The numbers are growing and moreover, there is a lot of information that travels back and forth from Delhi. Whenever anything big is happening there, people from here always come.”

He’s just finished releasing Doppelganger, an album comprising nine original tracks that were put online for free download. “It’s the old view versus new school. Things have changed now and it’s no more an era where you keep releasing music the old-fashioned way. Nobody goes to buy music anymore. I, as a child, downloaded music from the net. And that’s what other youngsters are doing.” He adds, “Plus, I thought why not utilise the power of the Internet rather than challenge it.”

Meanwhile, there’s a lot happening on the music front. “I’ll be releasing a short album and also starting a new record label, which will promote new talent and artists. There’s a tour of Europe lined up and India’s coming festival season looks busy too. There’s actually a lot going on.” With music things can never get still!

Stringing together tales
A puppet group from Moscow are bearers of a legacy and their stories carry a moral message...
Tanya Malhotra

They neither speak our language nor can they talk in English. Contrary to this, it’s enthralling how the artists, who, off stage, require a translator to exchange a few words, can captivate the audience through a fairytale with just the use of puppets on stage. Guess this is why we say that art breaks all the barriers!

The artists from the Moscow Regional State Puppet Theatre are in Chandigarh to perform on the first day of the International Puppet Festival at the Tagore Theatre called Little Marsha and the Bear. Performing for the first time in Chandigarh, the artists are very excited.

The story

“Our storyline encompasses a traditional fairytale of Moscow that carries a moral message. Although it’s meant for children, it can also be enjoyed by a major spectrum of the audience,” says Marina Miller, the assistant on stage. The story revolves around a little girl Marsha (played by Nastasya Ignatenko) and her engaging story, which moves ahead when she meets a bear (played by Stanislav Frolov).

Love for art

When asked why they chose this art, the answer was simple — for the love of art. However, to them, this show is much more than that. “It carries traditional values for us. The artists have performed such shows for more than eighty-seven years now and our group, in particular, has been performing for over ten years,” says Marina. She adds, “Our government supports our art financially as well as morally. And this has helped us a lot.”

Bollywood twist

You must be wondering how Bollywood is connected to this; well, crazy as it may sound the artists are extremely fond of Bollywood movies and artists. Nastasya may look somewhat introvert at first, but the mere mention of Bollywood brings a smile to her face, “Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Shahrukh Khan, Hrithink Roshan,” she smiles. “We have grown up watching Indian movies,” adds Rita. “Sita Aur Geeta, Ram Aur Shyam, Disco Deewane.” We could guess she was saying something very interesting and surely it was later confirmed by the translator Pankaj Maliya. “Her mother watched Raj Kapoor’s movie, Aawara, and that’s how she named her Rita.” Now that’s interesting

Destination luxury
The Virgin Courtyard, Viva Mexico, The Buzz, Haagen Dazs, Underdoggs Sports Bar and Grill…the experience of eating out just got bigger & better in Chandigarh…
Manpriya Singh

Long summer afternoons and even longer holiday breaks need not spell boredom. Those twiddling their thumbs at the thought of extended hours and unending holidays, can have a heart. Just as the restless souls start cribbing about the lack of options in Chandigarh, here’s a check list of the recently added; we bet there’s some bit for everyone!

More the merrier

The food story got a little better, if not bigger, with the coming of The Virgin Courtyard—7. Italian lovers can rejoice in the promise of signature hand-made pastas, wood fire oven pizzas, apart from the signature main course and dessert preparations. Says Sandeep Singh Baldoia, restaurant manager, “Our cuisine is focused on purity of ingredients. We target niche clientele and aim at providing a relaxed ambience and a complete hospitality experience.”

It was only last month that Viva Mexico in Sector 10 flung open its arms for the city’s foodies. From the plush white interiors, it’s time to move onto the hand-painted seats and jute as well as wooden settings. On offer is Mexico’s favourite hot salsa, tacos, quesadillas, nachos, burritos and burrito bowls.

Says Kito Singh, managing director, “We discussed this idea of opening a Mexican joint in the US. Mexican is what I know how to make and we promise hundred per cent authentic Mexican food.”

The most recent to join the club is The Buzz, in the heart of Chandigarh, Sector 17. The lounge-cum-restaurant-cum bar promises to make a place for itself among the city’s party-goers and add on to the options available during the weekend. Mind you, the summer has only started and there is already enough to check out before it ends!

Relax a bit

While there may not be a new place to explore each week, the city throws open its options regularly. The Elante brings forth with it quite a lot of excitement, both in the air and on the ground.

To begin with, there’s Haagen Dazs, the premium desserts brand that opened recently and along with it brought forth the best of ice-creams, pastries and fruits.

Try a new one each time because, during summer, there are always a hundred-and-one things to do even when there’s nothing to do! “With lots of space and open walls, we hope to provide a relaxed experience to people while they relish dessert,” shares Vijay Sood, VP, executive director.

From the saccharine sweet things, there’s hopping straight to the Chili’s. The America’s Texas grill and bar is almost on its way to Chandigarh. Then there’s the Underdoggs Sports Bar and Grill.

Those who are familiar with the brand see American, Mediterranean and Italian in one go. There’s still a lot more to move onto and discover.

The Lalit has already happened and brings forth its own set of anticipation. Do we still need a reason to get bored or call the summer long?

Artist Daljit Kaur’s photographs capture the rustic charm of Punjab’s villages
Amarjot Kaur

She does not just ‘click’ a photograph. She savours the moment of drama that lends character, depth and volume to its beauty; freezes its memory in a frame that flouts all barriers of time. Daljit Kaur’s photographs go beyond pacifying nostalgia, which is an inseparable element of photography and she delves deep into her roots to reconcile with its reality while capturing its real worth on reel. At the Museum of Fine Arts, Panjab University, Daljit exhibits her vision of the typically rustic Punjab in the exhibition titled, Woh kaagaz ki kashti, the curator of which is Tirthankar Bhattacharya, chairman, Department of Fine Arts.

Daljit employs a generous amount of visionary nuances, including tone, texture and colour, to her artistic calibre that captures the soul of Punjab, which lies in its bucolic charm or mitti di mehek (the aroma of Punjab’s soil) as she calls it. As she walks you around the gallery, you will barely be able to control your eyes from oscillating back and forth while stealing a stealthy glance at the photos that adorn the walls. And just when you try to regain your sense of focus, Daljit, who is presently settled in Canada, begins, “I am irrevocably in love with Punjab and its culture. In these photos I have captured the scenic beauty of the pinds (villages) of Punjab, which speak volumes about its people and their lifestyle,” she adds while pointing towards a series of photographs, the contents of which are the Gheeras. She explains, “Gheeras are used for storing cow dung, which is practically arranged in a manner where you can take just one cow-dung cake at a time. Imagine the beauty of the mechanism involved,” she gushes.

Daljit’s farm fixation reaches a crescendo as she presents another series of her paintings, which comprises the ghupps that are made out of hay. “Ghupps are used to store fodder for cattle. Besides, the wealth, prosperity and beliefs of the people living in a particular village run directly proportional to the quantity and quality of ghupps in the vicinity. It is believed that a rich village will have more number of ghupps,” she affirms.

Daljit also captures various patterns of darwazas (doors) across Bathinda, Malout, Ferozepur, Abohar, Attari and Fathehpur Manianwala. Also, she has attempted to capture the long lost traditional chulla (stove), wells, aala (a cupboard-like place used for storing milk and other food items from cats and other animals), and degbaar (a vessel used for storing milk, panjiri or other food items). Daljit takes buoyant steps towards sharing the rich heritage of Punjab that has now been replaced by technology.

However, while pointing at one of her installations, the peedi, which belonged to her grandmother, a poignant feeling of nostalgia swarms Daljit as she says, “This one is of the sentimental concerns, which is passed from one generation to another. Perhaps that’s the reason why it is called peedi (lineage). My grandmother gave it to my mother, who then passed it on to me…I also remember her singing on my cousin’s wedding, especially the song about Sassi and Punnu…it’s a pity to see our culture losing its sheen,” says Daljit while making a futile attempt to hide the moist emotions, which collected in the corner of her eyes.

Fake followers

A study suggests that out of Baby singer Justin Bieber's 37.3 million followers, only 17.8 million are true Beliebers.

SocialBakers reveals that nearly half of 37 million accounts following Bieber are fake and inactive. According to the social media statistic, the 19-year-old Canadian singer only has about 17.8 million real and active followers.

According to reports, SocialBakers spots fake accounts by looking at the number of followers and seeing if genuine tweets have been posted, rather than spam.

Justin BieberThe data also considers fake accounts to continuously tweet buzz phrases such as "diet", "make money" and "work from home." "With a huge celebrity Twitter account of this size and age it is completely normal to have between 20-50 percent of followers who are inactive or fake," Maje Crumpton, a spokesperson for Socialbakers, said in a statement. "A high percentage of fans are likely to start accounts to follow celebrities and then stop using them. Of course, the larger the amount of followers, the harder it is to keep track of and remove inactive followers. You will no doubt see a similarly high numbers of inactive followers on any abnormally large celebrity Twitter account," he added. — PTI

YRF's boldest film ever

Rani Mukerji has been known to play extremely versatile roles, and this will just add another feather to her cap. From Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat to Aiyya, Rani has surely come a very long way. A source was heard saying, "Rani has played versatile roles from being a grieving mother in her last film with Aamir Khan to portraying a headstrong journalist but this time, she will be seen in an all new bold avatar."

She established a place in the film industry with her portrayal of Tina in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and since then, she has only grown as an actress. The script required an established actress as well as someone who could hold the film on her shoulders Rani Mukerji entirely. It is a woman centric film with a strong character.

Aditya Chopra and his team personally selected Rani Mukerji after going through the script, as they felt she would suit the role in the best possible way. The source went on to add, "Aditya and his team were scouting around and thought Rani seemed to be an obvious choice, for more than one reason. Plus, the production house is really fond of her."

Rani Mukerji will be playing a cop for the first time in her career. Director Pradeep Sarkar was heard saying, "The film will be raw and gritty. It is something that neither Rani nor I have attempted before. And it's always good to invade in new territories, isn't it?" the major portions of the movie will be shot in Mumbai.

She has earlier worked with Yash Raj Productions in Dil Bole Hadippa, in which she pretended to be a man so as to be a part of the cricket team. Rani Mukerji had a mixed year at the box office last year. Aiyyaa was thrashed by the media and audiences alike whereas Talaash was liked by most.

Akshay Kumar, Sajid Khan at loggerheads

All is not well between Akshay Kumar and Sajid Khan. They have worked together in Housefull and Housefull 2. It all started when Sajid Khan took credit for Akshay's successful career.

When the 41-year-old filmmaker was quizzed why he doesn't work with newcomers, he retorted, "Akshay had a run of six to seven flop films, after which Housefull became the first big grosser in 2010. Then again, after six to seven duds, it was Housefull 2."

Sajid Khan's unpleasant comment did not go well with Akki and the action hero straightway told him that he does not want to interact with him. "It was a big showdown," said one of Akki's friends.

Sajid Khan, Akshay Kumar"Akshay is very angry and has told his buddies about it. Even filmmakers like Karan Johar, Rajkumar Hirani and Farhan Akhtar don't pass such remarks. Like every other actor, Akshay has had his share of highs and lows. More significantly, he is on a firm footing right now," the friend added.

When the report of the tussle went to Nadiadwala's ears, he decided to boot out Sajid Khan. The producer is very fond of Akshay, he considers him his family and not ready to make Housefull 3 without him.

I am single

You have seen her as Aaradhya in Dil Ki Nazar Se – Khoobsurat, and TV star Soumya Seth spills the secrets about her personal life, her relationship status and more with us. Here’s what she has to say…

If you were to be born with either beauty or brains, which one would you choose and why?

I would definitely choose brains. While beauty is transient, intelligence is eternal.

Would you advise Aaradhya not to be too fussy about people’s looks?

Aradhya has been conditioned to like only the handsome people. However, that is not her fault as her thought pattern has been determined by the environment in which she grew in. As long as Aaradhya isn’t killing anyone, I think it is absolutely fine. Personally, I think she should go on just the way she is because she is fun loving.

What do you think of the fairy tale, The Beauty and the Beast on which your show is based?

It’s a beautiful story. Though Beauty wasn’t a princess (in the beginning of the story), I consider her as one.

What do you prefer: acting or anchoring?

Soumya SethA blend of both. When I am acting, I am living another person’s life and while anchoring, I am interacting with the world as myself. Both are very unique and captivating.

Do you have a boyfriend?

I am single and very happy with it as of now. When it comes to relationships, my philosophies are very old-school. I believe that marriages are forever and so, I am looking for a permanent relationship.
In eternity: Soumya Seth
