Man held with 130 kg poppy husk

Banur, April 11
The Banur police has seized over 130 kg of poppy husk during at a check-point on today morning. The police stopped a car and searched it during a police naka on the Ambala-Banur road near Dharmgarh village and found poppy husk. The accused, who was driving the car, was identified as Atesh Kumar, a resident of ward number 2, Balachour.

He had been booked under Section 15-61-85 of the Act. The police said that the accused was coming in an Indica car when he was stopped for checking near Dharmgarh.

After searching the car, the police found over 6 bags in which poppy husk was packed. The police said that the accused would be presented in the court on Friday.

Unidentified body found

An unidentified body was recovered by the Lalru police near the National Highway at Dappar village on today morning.

The body has been kept in the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, for 72 hours for identification. The police sources said that it looked as if the deceased was hit by some vehicle.

The body was first noticed by Amar Singh of Dappar village today morning when he was going in his fields after which he reported the matter to the police.

The police has registered a case against the driver of unidentified vehicle under Section 279 and 304 A. The police has started the investigations.

Two drug peddlers arrested

Fatehgarh Sahib, April 11
The district police has arrested two drug peddler at a check-point. The arrested accused were allegedly involved in the sale of drugs. The police has recovered 1,000 intoxicant tablets, 5 gm smack and 5 kg of poppy husk from their possession.

SSP, HS Mann, said the Fatehgarh Sahib police during checking of vehicles signaled a pillion rider to stop for checking but he fled away. But after chasing them, he was overpowered by the police and during his checking police recovered five gm smack and 1,000 intoxicant tablets from his possession.

The accused was identified as Harcharnvir Singh, alias Honey, a resident of Samrala. Harcharnvir admitted that he used to supply tablets and drugs to the petty peddlers and drug addicts in rural area.

The police also arrested Faquar Ali, a resident of Labour Colony, Mandi Gobindgarh, and recovered five kg of poppy husk from his possession.

The accused used to sell drugs to laborers. The police has booked the accused under the NDPS Act.

28-year-old dies under mysterious circumstances

Kalka, April 11
A 28-year-old youth, who had come from Punjab to attend a marriage party in Pinjore, died under mysterious circumstances. Sources said available, William Gill (28), a resident of Hoshiarpur of district, Punjab, had come to attend a marriage of his friend, Surjit, of Model Town, Pinjore, on Wednesday.

The police sources confirmed that William had dinner on Wednesday night and he also danced on DJ. While dancing, he went out of the tent. Later, he was found lying in an unconscious state. He was rushed to the Kalka CHC, where the doctors declared him brought dead.

The police has conducted the postmortem examination in the Kalka CHC. The cause of the death will be ascertained after the report of the postmortem. The police also questioned some of the relatives, who had come to attend marriage. — OC

Local court stays Central Club elections

In a significant development, a local court here today stayed elections of Central Club, Sector 9, which were scheduled to be held on April 14. On the application filed by Rajesh Chadha, who is contesting for the post of general secretary, Civil Judge (Senior Division) Parvesh Singla stayed the elections and issued a direction to respondents to maintain status quo.

Advocate Mohit Sareen, appearing for Chadha, said that the court has also issued notice to the respondents to file their reply before the court by April 18.

Sareen said they had petitioned that Vinod Khanna, who is the general secretary for the past six years, should be restrained from contesting for the post of secretary in the forthcoming elections.

Applicant’s counsel informed the court that as per rules, nobody could contest elections after holding a post for two consecutive years.

Assault on Siliguri girl
Charges framed against accused couple

A local court today framed charges against a couple in a case of assault and rape attempt of a 20-year-old girl from West Bengal. The incident was reported in January this year. The court of Additional District And Sessions Judge, Preet Sahni, framed charges against 35-year-old Naresh, a resident of Meerut, and his live-in partner, Seema, a resident of Kolkata.

The charges have been framed against the two for rape attempt, unnatural sex, wrongful confinement, criminal intimidation, threatening, assault and causing hurt under Sections 342, 352, 323, 506, 376, 511, 377 and 392 of the IPC and various Sections of the IT Act.

The incident was reported on January 10 when a 20-year-old girl from Siliguri in West Bengal was stripped, beaten up and assaulted by the accused couple at their rented one-room accommodation in Sector 41.

She was even video-graphed by the accused, who blackmailed her and forced her to be a sex worker.

The incident had come to light only when the victim girl tried to escape from the clutches of the couple. In the morning, she tied herself to a bedsheet and attempted jumping from the second floor of the house to escape.

She fell down and sustained injuries and the neighbours called the police. Initially, it was deemed that she had tried to commit suicide.

The girl was brought to the city with the promise that she would be given a job of a domestic help here.

The couple was then arrested by the police and is in now in judicial custody.

Estate Office official gets bail

Chandigarh, April 11
The CBI court today granted bail to an official of the Estate Office arrested on charges of graft. Accused Jagjit Singh, employed with the Estate Office, was granted bail by the special CBI court against bail bonds of Rs 30,000.

The CBI had arrested Jagjit Singh in March 2013, while accepting an illegal gratification of Rs 15,000. The arrest was made on the complaint of a government employee alleging that Jagjit had asked for Rs 30,000 for giving a report in favour of the complainant pertaining to a notice issued to the complainant for subletting a government accommodation.

Two cheating cases registered in city

The UT police registered two separate cases of cheating worth crores today. In the first case, two persons hailing from Hoshiarpur reported to the police that a broker forged their signatures in a mutual fund investment. As per the complaint, the broker had approached them for a mutual fund investment scheme worth Rs 1.5 crore, which would get him profit.

The complainants Balbir Singh, who is an NRI, and Ashok Kumar, of Garshankar, (Hoshiarpur), alleged that Nisant Pundir (broker), a resident of Sector 34, along with Chandni Bhalla and her husband Mohinder Pal Bhalla claiming to be working in Reliance Capital Limited Management, Sector 9C, had cheated the duo.

The duo alleged that Balbir paid Rs 1.53 crore in different installments to the company. He stated that a person forged his signature and changed the scheme that caused loss to him.

As many as 32 bank slips out of the total 40 were allegedly forged. A case of cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy has been registered at the Sector 3 police station.

In another cheating case, two employees of High Court were booked for a fraud of Rs 26 lakh, with a bank in a loan case. The police sources said both were working as steno typist in the office of the Registrar, Punjab and Haryana High Court. The police has registered a case of cheating at the Sector 3 police station against Anandjit Singh Dhiman and Satish Kumar Dhiman of Mani Majra.

They allegedly cheated Rs 26 lakh of HDFC Housing Deployment Finance Corporation Limited, Sector 8. The two had taken loan for a house that was already acquired.

Cameras worth Rs 8 lakh stolen
Thieves set shop on fire to 'destroy' evidence

Panchkula, April 11
Unidentified miscreants today broke into an electronic goods shop at Sector 16, decamped with seven to 10 cameras worth Rs 10 lakh before setting the shop on fire. The police said the miscreants might have set the shop afire in order to destroy evidence.

On the complaint of the shop owner, Bansi Lal, the police has registered a case under Sections 380 (theft), 436(mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy house, and 454 (trespassing) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Sewa Singh, in charge of the Sector 16 police post, said a few shopkeepers told him that they noticed the flames billowing out of the shop at 8.40 am.

The police found the locks broken and electronic goods missing which meant that the miscreants set the shop afire after stealing the cameras.

A damaged camera was found from the spot.

The owner said the keys of the shop were with him. He said the motive behind setting the shop ablaze was destruction of the evidence.

Station house officer of the Sector 14 police station Lalit Kumar said the had started the investigations and soon they would catch the culprits.

Woman fraudster arrested

The police arrested a Ludhiana-based woman for fraudulently selling an eight marla plot of an NRI woman. The accused, Neelam, sold off the plot in Sector 68 to Inder Pal Singh, who returned from Malaysia and resides in Phase XI, by posing herself as the owner, Paramjit Kaur, for Rs 1.68 crore.

The property has also been registered in the name of the buyer. After getting the information, GMADA’s estate officer Navjot Kaur called the accused to her office and handed her over to the police. The estate officer said a departmental inquiry would be initiated against the department officials.

A case of cheating has been registered against Neelam at the Phase VIII police station.

Paramjit Kaur, the owner of the plot, returned to India after 12 years and approached GMADA after coming to know that her plot had been sold off.

Chandigarh Cricket Association affiliated to Punjab Cricket Association has shortlisted players for boys (U-19) inter-district cricket tournament. The tournament is scheduled to be held next month. The players will attend a coaching camp at Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, form April 13.
