Soccer losing sheen in city Chandigarh, April 8 In the absence of quality tournaments, the competition such as the ongoing 7-a-side tournament, organised by different groups of youngsters, is turning out of be the only platform for the local players, to showcase their talent and to stay in touch with the game. Many youngsters opt to play tournaments organised by rural committees in Punjab, in the absence of full fledged tournaments. The recently held seven-a-side tournament witnessed almost 40 teams compromising 10 players each participated in the tournament. “A total of 400 players participated in the two-day event. Notably the tournament was not even recognised by any institution. But if these kinds of tournaments can attract so many player then why can't the local association make some efforts and organise better tournaments. During the last one year, no senior league was organised and even the sub-junior cup was sponsored by a cold-drink brand, while another junior cup was sponsored by a school”, said a coach seeking anonymity. Interestingly the last senior category soccer tournament organised by the local association, was during the year 2011 and that too after a gap of three years. Thereafter in 2012 the association failed to organise any tournament. During the 2011 general meeting, it was also decided to introduce football tournament for financial institutions, corporations and corporate houses. The matches were expected to be held on holidays and weekends. But the plan could never be materialised. “At present, the soccer in city has now been left only to the schools, state run academies and government offices. Apart from that there are no grass-root, junior, senior-level programmes or tournaments, organised by the association. The functioning of the association comes to light only during the selection of national teams. Other than this, there is no involvement of any kind for any activity”, said Prabhjot Singh, a player. The authorities while releasing the annual calendar for 2008-09, had decided to include a tournament for the city colleges. The prize money for which was Rs 1 lakh. But even after 3 years, the authorities failed to organise any such tournament. The recently organised All India Football Federation (AIFF) Grassroot program for coaches and players also raised several eyes, when majority of PTI teachers instead of professional soccer coaches were asked to join the programme. But all the session of the programme were organised successfully by the head-coach of the seminar. |
