Pulse polio drive begins in Fatehgarh Sahib
Fatehgarh Sahib, April 7 Dr Gurpal Singh, a Civil Surgeon, inaugurated the campaign by administrating polio drops to the children. Dr Gurpal Singh said that as many as 138 teams have been constituted in the district. He said, “Representatives of religious, social organisations, police personnel, Social Security Department staff and other government departments are helping the health department in this campaign.” He said, “There is target to administer polio drops to 19,377 children.” He said nine mobile teams and 276 vaccinators have been constituted to tour the rural areas, slums and to visit door to door to ensure that no child remains without polio drops. He said as many as 23 supervisors have been deputed to supervise the campaign. |

Man thrashes wife, attempts suicide; booked
Chandigarh, April 7 The police booked Amitinder Singh, for allegedly beating up his wife and later making an unsuccessful attempt to commit suicide at his residence in Sector 27. The police has registered a case on the complaint of Amitinder’s wife’s brother, Kulwinder Brar. The police said that Amitinder came to their residence drunk and started beating up his wife and created a scene. When the police was informed, the accused tried to kill himself with a knife by inflicting injury on his hand. The accused was arrested and was taken to the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital in Sector 16, where his medical report confirmed that he was under influence of alcohol. The wife of the accused also sustained injures. A case of voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation and attempt to suicide has been registered under Sections 323, 506 and 309 of the IPC at the Sector 26 police station. |

3 booked for trespassing
Mohali, April 7 The accused, Rashpal Kaur, Sukhwinder Singh and Preet, are said to have encroached upon the vacated house of a Chandigarh resident, Kiran Luthra, at Akal Ashram Colony yesterday. The victim is currently residing at Rohini, New Delhi, for treatment of her husband Surinder Luthra. In her complaint to the police Kiran Luthra alleged that she got a phone call from her neighbours about the encroachment by Rashpal Kaur, Sukhwinder Singh and Preet. “When we reached today, the accused not only started quarrelling with us but also threatened us of dire consequences following which we called up the police,” said Luthra. After the verification, the police initiated action and removed the encroachers from the house and registered a case under the Sections 447, 380, 506 and 34 of the IPC against the accused. |

Manan proves his mettle for Kings XI
Chandigarh, April 7 Thereafter his prolonged injury kept him out of the Punjab state cricket team. But once again he has proved his critics wrong by bagging man of the match award, in his very first match of Indian Premier League (IPL) season six. Representing the Kings XI Punjab team, this 19-year-old- young lad scored 43 off 28 balls, studded with seven boundaries with a strike rate of 153.57 to edge past the Pune Warriors side, at their home ground, today. Manan, who has been signed by the Kings XI franchisee this year, started his Indian Premier League campaign on a blasting note. Although his team was chasing a low total of 99-runs, he played like a champion. After bagging man of the match award, he explained his first-match-nervousness and said, "I was nervous before the start but as the wicket kept getting better and better, I could play my shots", Manan. "He played well and started his campaign on a good note. I just wish that he carries on from here and performs well through out the tournament. Everyone is calling and wishing us good luck and I hope he does everything right", Sanjeev Vohra, his father. He ran out of luck after being dropped from the U-19 World Cup--winning squad with a fractured finger during a practice match. Thereafter he was not entertained by the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) for representing the state in T-20 matches. Along with the man of the match award, he also won the most innovative innings award. During a media conference at the PCA Stadium, Mohali, on April 2, the team's captain-cum-mentor, Adam Gilchrist, showed his full confidence in Manan. "He looks good and is patching up with team nicely. I hope he will get a place in the final eleven. He has been performing well in both batting and fieldind", said Adam, on April 2. The regular opening batsman, who was sent one-down in today's match, was a part of the India (U-19) squad during the quadrangular series in Australia and the Asia Cup hosted by Kuala Lumpur, last year. He was involved in a 164-run partnership with Unmukt Chand. The team had won that match and Manan had scored an unbeaten 79 off 35. |
Shreya routs Varinda in lawn tennis
Chandigarh, April 7 In the final match, Shreya registered 4-1, 4-0 lead over her rival. Earlier, she defeated Snigdha Saran in a 2-hour long semifinal match. In the boys’ category, Krishna Hooda faced some resistance from Pranav Chopra and the match went to the final set tie breaker. Krishna won the first set through a tie breaker but Pranav made a come back and claimed the second set in the tie breaker. Krishna again gained the lead with 6-3 in the decider tie breaker. Pranav managed to hold his nerves and scoring two match-points, but couldn’t manage to stop Krishna from finishing the match on the third match-point. In the Orange Court Boys’ category, Darshan Dilbar Singh defeated Vedant Saini 7-4 whereas in the Orange Court Girls’ category Jyotsna Sharma beat Tanya Gupta in straight set 7-4. Ranbaxy XI, Dabur India log wins
Chandigarh, April 7 In the first match of the day, the Ranbaxy India defeated Fortis XI by 70 runs. Batting first, the winning side posted a total of 161runs in the allotted slot of 20 overs. Ashish contributed 40 runs while Vikram contributed 39 runs. Sumeet with his individual score of 36 runs remained the other noticeable scorer of the team. From the bowling side, AP Singh claimed 3 wickets while Naveen took 2 wickets. In reply, the Fortis team was bundled out on a mere total of 90 runs. Munish scored 21runs runs for the team. From the bowling side, GS Raina took a five wicket haul while Sanjiv claimed 2 wickets. In the second match, the Dabur India team defeated Government Medical College and Hospital team, Sector 32, by 10 wickets. After electing to bat first, the losing side scored 99 runs. Ajay (35-runs) and Pranay (31-runs) contributed lion’s share in team’s total. Bowler Kuldeep took 3 wickets. On other end, the Dabur India team achieved the target without loosing any wicket.
