A couple to die for!
Ram Kapoor and Sakshi Tanwar are surely the superstars of the small screen. Fans go berserk as they try to steal a moment with the reel couple on their first joint visit to tricity
Mona

all smiles: Ram Kapoor

They are the first couple of Indian telly and most celebrated. Ram Kapoor and Sakshi Tanwar rule the hearts as well TRPs. And, boy, do they have a mass following! One could witness that firsthand as the famous pair descended at Big Bazaar, Zirakpur amid much fanfare on Saturday. Crowd cheered, enthusiasts whistled, this rather young girl shouted, 'Hello, Mr Ram Kapoor'. He responded by waving back, smiling, putting his hand on his chest as the team of bouncers tried to control the hysterical crowd and failed!

The 'it' couple of the show, Bade Ache Lagte Hain, Ram Kapoor and Salkshi Tanwar are different as they can get —she is petite, he is bulky; she is talkative, he keeps to himself1—yet, they rock together. In tricity, to announce the winner of India's Most Stylish Home contest, won by Ekta Pasricha from Panchkula, Ram and Sakshi looked at ease with the attention they garnered to begin with.

Ram, in blue jeans, pink shirt and shades in place, looked way younger than his onscreen avatar (both on small and big screen) and bigger (in size) too. Sakshi looked resplendent in an off-white suit, flowing dupatta and perfectly done curls. She coolly took the golden watch out of her bag and wore it, waiting for things to settle but that was not to be.

Pushing and shoving went on as numerous cameras tried to click the couple. Children were as much a part of the melee, some shouting 'Mr Ram Kapoor' (again), others howling for their mums who were busy trying to take a closer look. Till things resulted in a clash and the bouncers whisked away the couple to a small room.

One elderly lady, who got a close look at the stars couldn't stop exclaiming, 'Sakshi is so thin, TV par to theek thaak hi lagti hai', her friend filled in, 'Mr Ram Kapoor (is Mr his first name?) is really irritated. He does not like it at all'.

Another exit, as bouncers formed a circle, Ram Kapoor tenderly shielded his onscreen wife from the maddening crowd to disappear again. This is what we could grab from the chaos:

Sakshi has visited Chandigarh many times, mostly as a stopover. She loves the city and shopping here for clothes. She is in a happy space enjoying her life. Ask her when is she actually getting married, 'God knows' is the short, sweet reply. Ram Kapoor holds his forte 'he will either talk to all or none', no pleading, flattering, insisting works.

Meanwhile the Pasricha family enjoys their moment of glory. Ekta dutifully gives the credit of the smartest home to her mother-in-law who beams at this credit. Women scurry around to get another glimpse of the famous couple, kids tag along with their dads as Chandigarh saw the famous reel couple descend in real!

Straight to Italy
On TLC's new series Nigellissima, Nigella Lawson demystifies the Italian way of cooking
Manpriya Singh

kitchen queen: Nigella Lawson

Make it fast, cheap and easy or keep it exotic, authentic or formal. Food remains the first and the true, the last and the only love of millions. Nigella Lawson perhaps cracked onto the fact and cashed on it. Starting April, Lifestyle channel TLC brings Nigellissima, celebrity cook-book author Nigella Lawson's new food series for Italian food lovers.

The London-based author of bestsellers like How To Eat, Nigella Express, Nigella Christmas, brings in the spirit of Italy into your kitchens! The show claims to be true to the spirit of Italian cooking with recipes that are quick and easy.

On Nigellissima

Well, the show is not an authoritative and traditional look at Italian food. It's really a way and kind of a personal journey. I went to Italy to live there in my gap year, between school and university and I go back pretty much every year since. And it's also I suppose for me a way of looking at how I can bring the Italian spirit and feel and taste into my own kitchen. It's about certain spices, certain herbs and flavours, but it is also about trying to explain how very simple and straightforward Italian food can be.

Getting the Italian right

One of the reasons I wrote this book, which actually became a TV series, was that it interested me. Italian food is popular everywhere. So, I wanted to look and see why it was so popular and I think the truth is that it's incredibly simple and honest and straightforward. And I believe even though the purists may disagree, it lends itself to be incorporated into various cuisines of the world, because it's a home cuisine, it's not essentially a restaurant cuisine.

Chef's special

It's very difficult to ask a greedy person about their favourite dishes. I would say there are a couple of recipes that I love. One is the chocolate olive oil cake which is incredibly easy to make. Actually it doesn't contain chocolate, but cocoa. Then there's this one-step no-churn coffee ice-cream which tastes like the most fantastic gelato in Italy, but in fact it is made with condensed milk, cream and coffee liquor.

Incredible India

I'm a great fan of Indian food. We're quite lucky that in England we do have a lot of Indian food, quite a sophisticated array of Indian food. Moreover, English food is so influenced by Indian food, because of our shared history. A lot of them I've grown up eating and I find it quite hard to isolate which spice might be Indian. But I certainly love Indian breads.

The show airs during weekdays at 10pm starting mid-April.

A woman’s tale

Wide angle : The play Her Story is a collage of eight different stories.

This year the Department of English and Cultural Studies is staging a multi-lingual docudrama titled Her Story.

Making a departure from the tradition of staging plays written by well-known playwrights, the group has decided to script a play to voice their concerns.

One of the major issues to be highlighted in the play is the absence of a woman's voice in general. It encompasses an abstract mixture of anger, hurt, helplessness, disappointment-- all rolled into one.

The play has eight sequences wherein various stages of a woman's life, beginning from the pre-natal age to the final twilight of her journey.

On April 7 at English Auditorium, Panjab University. Time: 6:30pm.

When music becomes worship…
Tanya Malhotra

The euphoric blend of melody and spirituality ought to be a grand affair. With this notion, ZETC Punjabi organised the grand finale of Suran De Waris in Punjabi Kala Bhawan-16. It was a battle among the six contestants who were chosen after a rigorous search from across Punjab. Maghar Ali, 35, from Bathinda was declared the winner after the two rounds of Sufi and folk music. Maghar has been learning music form Ustad Baqur Hussain of Patiala Gharana and Ustad Salamat Ali Khan from Pakistan who belongs to Sham Chaurasi Gharana. He is also currently teaching music in a school in Bathinda.

Maghar, with a humble demeanor, says, "I wish to spend my life in the worship of music." Maghar will get a chance to make his own music album sponsored by Sangeet Audio.

Shah Brothers form Amritsar, Balli and Satte Shah bagged the second position. While Balli states, "As we carry the legacy of our grandfather, Sufi gives us the satisfaction, Satte adds, "We are very lucky to have reached here, all thanks to ZETC." Ghulam Ali from Jalandhar won the third position. While he is a huge fan of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, his own name, conferred to him by his father in remembrance of the famous singer Ghulam Ali, gives him the push to excel in music. Other participants were Saranjeet Kaur from Ludhiana, Gagandeep Singh from Amritsar and Meenu Singh from Bhatinda.

Dolly Guleria, Barkat Sidhu and Amardeep Gill judged the event. The channel will broadcast this show from April 13.

In conversation with Raj Kundra…

Honeymoon period: Raj Kundra and Shilpa Shetty

Raj Kundra is happily married to Shilpa Shetty and their infant son completes the family picture. The businessman talks about his marriage to the woman of his dreams.

Shilpa and simplicity!

Shilpa is considered a sex symbol but I get to see the real person. She was sitting with her mother in a hotel when I first met her. I realised how homely she actually was. It was love at first sight. From the moment I saw her, I knew that I'd love her to be my wife. What makes her different from other actors is that she doesn't come with the baggage of being a celebrity. That impressed me the most. She is sweet and friendly. I took her home to meet my parents and she was very warm. She touched their feet. I respect that.

Home sweet home

My friends were shocked when Shilpa cooked chikan curry for me. She's a fantastic homemaker and very house proud. Our house looks so good because Shilpa's worked on designing it the way it is. She's been picking up things from all over the world. She's a great housewife. No one expects her to clean the house but nevertheless, she does not mind getting her hands dirty.

All praise

She's a super mom! I have seen stars leaving everything to their staff but Shilpa is so hands on. She's up before me and she sleeps after me. She's been getting her hands dirty, changing nappies. I guess motherhood does this to you. Not for one minute have I seen a lazy side to her. She's never complained about not getting enough sleep. She's a good mother.

All's well that ends well

For any relationship to work you need to have balance. If one person is hot headed, the other person needs to be calm. Not that it always happens. Sometimes you might both get angry and have arguments but that's a part of life. It's normal to have healthy arguments. We are particular about not going to bed angry. We always make sure that before the night is over; we sort out our differences and move on to the next day in a happy way.

Finally there

She's done a variety of movies but I must say the actress in Shilpa Shetty came to fore only recently. Before that she was working only in commercial cinema. Women were not given the kind of roles that they are given today. Her last few roles are the ones I've enjoyed the most. The earlier ones terrorised me a bit. I've even told her, 'Look, I don't think I can bear to watch them.' But Life... In A Metro, Phir Milenge, Rishtey and Dhadkan are some interesting films. If you ask me, I'd say she's become a better actress now.

Either or situation

Hard way: Prachi Desai

Prachi Desai had to opt out of Vikram Bhatt's sequel to 1920 because she has extended her dates to complete the movie with Sanjay Dutt. It would have been difficult to balance so she opted out of the big movie. Vikram is now looking for a replacement.

In pursuit of perfection!

Meal time: Saqib Saleem

Saqib Saleem does not have to hunt for movies but he is hunting for the perfect restaurant to treat his family at, on his upcoming birthday. His father runs a restaurant chain in Delhi and loves Mughlai food and his mother is an excellent cook. So he is checking out many eateries around the town.

One stone, two birds

Katrina Kaif will be seen in an all-action avatar in Dhoom 3. She is working out for five hours a day to fit into the role. This will also help her for Bang Bang, another action movie that she's doing. She is being trained for stamina, resistance and strength and her workout is divided into two parts.

The finishing touch

Style secrets: Aditi Rao Hydari

Aditi Rao Hydari is a pretty and a petite actress who recently launched a platinum jewellery line. She talks about her fascination for jewellery, styling and more.

All that glitters

I have been very lucky with the jewellery I have got. My grandfather gifted me a family heirloom when I was 13 years old. It was an antique piece which belonged to his mother. My neck is very small so he had the piece redone. I like wearing chunky jewellery. I style myself according to my mood and comfort levels. I usually wear a watch and solitaires with everything. I do not like to overdo things. I like platinum as we can keep it minimal.

Heavy metal

I think jewellery adds finishing touches to an outfit and defines your look whether it is elegant and mature or cute and sweet. So it is important to pick the right jewellery. I feel platinum goes with anything and everything, whether formal or casual. It is precious and rare.

Gifts galore

I love receiving gifts. My mother has been giving me gifts in baskets since I was 5 and she still brings me a lot of presents when she comes to Mumbai. Of course, now I gift as well. But more than presents, which are not a measure of love, I feel what is more important is to give your loved ones time, kindness, understanding, patience and love.

On a platter

Spoilt brat: Ayan Mukerji with Ranbir Kapoor

Ranbir Kapoor insisted that his director and buddy Ayan Mukerji be a part of the song Badtameez Dil in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. He even made him wear a coat. He is the guy who pops the champagne in the song and smears cake on people's faces. Ranbir gets what he wants!

Best left alone...

At loggerheads: Pooja Chopra with Vidyut Jammwal

Pooja Chopra is debuting in Commando, opposite one-film-old Vidyut Jammwal but the duo does not get along at all. At a recent media event, they did not even exchange pleasantries.

Nothing left to chance

Worked up: Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra is very serious about her role of Mary Kom in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's movie. She has flown in her trainer Samir Jaura to Miami because she does not want to miss work outs. She has to have eight pack abs in the movie! That will be awesome!

While Praneet said that he would like to make Taapsi his girlfriend, Zenith went one step further by presenting her with a rose and going down on one knee to ask her to dance. Taapsi couldn't resist his cute advances and took him up on his offer to dance with her. But with five- year-old Zenith barely reaching her knees, Taapsi picked him up and waltzed with him…much to Zenith's delight!

On seeing both ace directors on the sets, Anamitra asked Anurag dada why all good directors were overweight to which David Dhawan reasoned that it was because they were the only ones who were happy.
