Socio-economic dimensions in business growth discussed
Patiala, April 6 Delivering keynote address, Dr Sucha Singh Gill, Director General, Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development (CRRID), Chandigarh, delved upon the interconnectedness of societal welfare and the growth of business. He argued that business entities don't survive in vacuum. These entities must develop those methods of production which are both environment and business friendly. The imbalance in the growth of business and the development of society forces us to sit up and think why slums and luxury apartments co-exist. Dr Sucha Singh Gill further explained that over the past 44 years, there is an increase of only one dollar in the income of an American worker, whereas the profits of corporate sector have grown in millions of dollars. Such models of economic systems can't sustain for a long time, and therefore needs to be revisited so that our future generations don't have to face the imminent catastrophe due to the degradation of environment and ruthless exploitation of natural resources. Welcoming the chief guest and other delegates, college principal Dr Satish Kumar Bhardwaj said such seminars were very important for apprising students about the lastest advancements in the field of economics. Prof Nirmal Singh, convener of the seminar, said an umbilical connection exists between the human development and the growth of the business. Business affects society by generating income and society supports business by providing resources it needs. This interplay of the socio-economic forces is the main theme of the seminar. Dr Ravi Kiran (Thapar University, Patiala), Dr BS Bhatia (former Registrar, Punjabi University, Patiala). Dr BB Singla, Punjabi University, Patiala, presided over various technical sessions of the seminar.
