Dera Bassi, March 31
Water of the Ghaggar River, which was once useful for animals and irrigation of fields, is now badly polluted due to the discharging of industrial and domestic effluents in the river.

After visiting the river site, it was found that the polluted water was flowing into the river. Dirty water was mixing in the river from the Sukhna Choe, which is flowing from the Chandigarh and Panchkula side.

Residents of the nearby villages expressed concern over the problem and said the dirty water was coming into the Ghaggar River from Sukhna Choe which flow with the polluted water of Chandigarh, Panchkula and Zirakpur.

They further said this dirty water was not useful for the irrigation of crops and for animals. The polluted water had been contaminating the ground water.

Congress leader, Manpreet Kaur Dolly, demanded that the pollution control board and the state government should take proper steps to control the polluting water of the Ghaggar River. She said that the residents are being affected by the polluted water as many people often come in the grip of diseases after drinking the water from hand pumps. Many crops had also been damaged.

Meanwhile, Joginder Singh, XEN pollution control board, admitted that the water of Ghaggr River was flowing polluted due to various reasons but board had taken appropriate steps to resolve this problem. He said a survey of this problem was conducted and its report was submitted to MLA, NK Sharma, for further action.

He added that the treated water of Chandigarh and Panchkula was mixing into the river through Sukhna Choe and nearly 20 per cent of the untreated industrial water of Chandigarh and Panchkula were also mixing in the water of river. This treatment plant would be handed over to the soil conservation department that would supply treated water to farmers for the purpose of irrigation and it would not flow in the Ghaggar River. Along with this polluted water of Dhabi Choe and Jharmal Choe it was adding to the woes by mixing into the Ghaggar River.

Xen, Joginder Singh, said a water treatment plant would be set up by Punjab State Industrial Export Corporation at Focal Point, Dera Bassi, which would be helpful in treating the industrial effluents.

The board officials and employees were keeping 24 hour checking on the pollution related industries which had been set up on the bank of Jharmal Choe to control the polluted water. He assured that the board had taken strict measures against industries which were found discharging effluents in the Jharmal Choe. The full report of this problem had been handed over to Local MLA and Chief Parliamentary Secretary, NK Sharma, who would take this problem with concerned authorities.

The home side of Kings XI, Punjab, is scheduled to play eight home matches including six at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium, Mohali, and two in Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium, Dharamsala. Vogue to witness these two last-matches is more than that of the other six matches at the PCA Stadium, Mohali.

Ticket-selling-outlets for the upcoming IPL matches are receiving queries regarding the availability of the tickets for the last two matches across the city. “We are receiving almost 10 to 12 queries everyday for the matches in Dharamsala. The craze among masses for Dharamsala matches is more than that of here. Climatic conditions are good there and moreover, being a hill station, it attracts more people,” said an official of the ticket selling counter.

The management of the Kings XI Punjab team and the HPCA is yet to decide the prices of tickets and their selling date. “The tickets are expected to be available a month before the match dates in Dharamsala. The stadium is scheduled to host two evening matches on May 16 (Thursday) and May 18 (Saturday). In the first match, the host team will face the Royal Challengers, Bangalore, while in the other match the team will lock horns with Mumbai Indians.

“We had visited the stadium during the last edition of the IPL. It becomes icing on the cake to see favorite cricket stars in action at such a beautiful place. This year, the craze is expected to be double when Sachin Tendulkar’s team will play the match. I have visited a Mohali-based ticket counter. But returned empty-handed due to non-availability of the tickets. Whenever, the sale of tickets will start, I will book four for my family,” said Dr Vikram Bhasin, a resident.

A cricket fan, added, “I have requested one of my friends, who is working with the management concerned, to keep 12 tickets for the May 18 match, in advance.
