ONE
of the reasons for
the continued existence of great civilisations in South Asia has been
the easy availability of water. With an increase in population and
increased energy use in the past 100 years, however, there have been
reports of water shortages everywhere. People and states have begun to
fight over water as never before.

with sacrifices of its soldiers for the Panth. The saga of
laying down life for the greater cause started from the Gurus and
touched glory when the Tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, formed the Khalsa.
Sikhs then became an organised force to reckon with.
Unfortunately, the Sikhs were later divided into groups called misls,
but were subjugated and brought together by the Lion of Punjab,
Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

titled The Nawab,
it is a book with a difference. It is a biography of two 'nawabs', the
first duo of father, Iftikhar Khan Pataudi, and son Mansur, to captain
India in cricket. If Iftikhar captained India in three Tests (he had
earlier played three Tests for England) in 1946, Mansur captained 40
of the 46 Tests that he played.

the concept of food
security (1970s) is an addendum to the broader concept of right to
food (UDHR, 1948). Food security is broadly summed up by the author as
a situation where in food is systematically and timely available to
all people and such food is within their economic, physical and social
access, has requisite nutritious value and is culturally acceptable.
