Liquor vends allotted for Rs 85.22 cr in Fatehgarh Sahib

Fatehgarh Sahib, March 22
Liquor vends of the district have been allotted for licence fee of 85,22,31,000 which is 5.8 per cent more than that of the previous year. The draw of lots for the year 2013-14 for allotment of liquor vends of the district were held here today under the supervision of Magnesh Sethi, Asstt Excise & Taxation Commissioner, Fatehgarh Sahib.

Yashvir Mahajan, Deputy Commissioner of Fatehgarh Sahib was present as observer, where as TS Virk, Deputy Excise & Taxation Commissioner-cum-Joint Director was present as observer for the Excise and Taxation Department.

Anurag Verma, Excise and Taxation Commissioner, Punjab, visited the venue during the process of draw and enquired from the applicants present about any problems and suggestions regarding transparency of the process of draw of lots being conducted. The applicants expressed full satisfaction in transparency of draw of lots.

Allotment of liquor vends completed by conducting 10 draw of lots and 1 per cent security was recovered on the spot from the successful applicants. As many as 1,802 applications for allotment of liquor vends were received and Rs 9, 37,70,000 were collected which is 34 per cent more as compared to that of the previous year.

The police had made elaborate security arrangements and the banks had deputed their staff to collect the cash.

Rs 1,898 cr to be spent on development of villages

The state government will spend Rs 1,898.48 crore in the current budget on development of villages in the state. The government intends to develop the rural areas on the tune of the cities, said Randeep Singh Surjewala, Minister of PWD (B&R) Industries and Commerce, Science and Technology Minister today in Kalka.

Randeep, who was here to chair a programme, organised by the Kisan Khet Mazdoor Congress, Haryana. He said Rs 178 crore has been spent on the various development projects in Kalka , Pinjore, Morni and its adjoining areas. Rs 78 lakh has also been approved for some other projects. Rs 11.30 crore has been sanctioned for sewerage treatment plant in Pinjore and Rs 12.30 crore have been approved for the same projects in Kalka.

New projects of Rs 48 crore, which include construction of roads and bridges in the area has been started. The families of the martyrs, Gursimrat Dhindsa and Majore Sandeep Sankhla of Panchkula, were also honoured on the occasion.

Man dies in train mishap

Dera Bassi, March 22
A 38-year-old man was killed after coming in grip of a train last night near Jawaharpur village. The deceased has been identified as Harvinder Singh, a resident of Jhoorheri village, Mohali.

As per information, the accident occurred last night. The railway police came to know about the incident on the Friday morning.

Sources said the victim had come to see a Kabaddi match, which was being organised near Jawaharpur. When he was trying to cross the railway track, he suddenly came in the grip of a train.

The body of the deceased has been handed over to his relatives after conducting the postmortem. — OC

Six injured as autorickshaw overturns

Ambala, March 22
Six persons including a woman were injured when an overloaded autorickshaw overturned on the Ambala-Chandigarh Highway near Ambala City this noon.

The victims were rushed to the Civil Hospital, Ambala City. One of the victims, Sona Devi, who sustained serious injuries, was referred to PGI, Chandigarh.

One of the passengers of the autorickshaw said that the autorickshaw was overloaded and it overturned after the driver applied breaks.

Bribe accused files bail application

Panchkula-based patwari Balraj Singh, who was caught accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 in connection with a site verification report last month, today filed a bail plea in the special CBI court.

The CBI sleuths had arrested Balbir, posted at the building branch of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, for accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000.

He had demanded the bribe for submitting the site verification report for getting an NOC for the transfer of ownership of a house.

The CBI court has issued a notice to the CBI for filing a reply by March 26.

Balraj had initially demanded Rs 2 lakh and a deal was struck at Rs 1 lakh.

The accused had come to collect the first instalment of Rs 50,000 on February 14.

The CBI had laid a trap and arrested him at the new District Courts Complex in Sector 43, where the accused had come to take the bribe amount from the complainant, Jaspinder Singh, a resident of Mani Majra. A case was registered against him under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Earlier, the complainant had alleged that the patwari visited their site and demanded Rs 2 lakh from the complainant for submitting the site verification report in his favour. Balraj Singh had directed the complainant to give him the bribe amount of 2 lakh in two instalments. Later, Balraj Singh agreed to reduce the bribe amount to Rs 1 lakh. He said he would take Rs 50,000 as the first instalment and asked the complainant to pay him the second instalment before the issuance of the NOC.

Man duped of Rs 1.65 lakh

Unidentified persons duped a Sector 28 resident of Rs 1.65 lakh. The victim, Bhupinder Singh Obrai, said someone called him up saying that he had won a lottery of Rs 25 lakh. Following this, Obrai deposited Rs 1.65 lakh in different bank accounts. An FIR has been lodged. The mobile location of the callers has been traced to Pakistan.

DC, MC chief in contempt loop

The UT Deputy Commissioner and the MC Commissioner are in contempt loop.

They have been asked to explain why contempt of court proceedings should not be initiated against them for wilful disobedience of the Punjab and Haryana High Court orders in eco-cabs case.

The authorities failed to file a reply despite reminders.

Contempt notices were issued during the resumed hearing of the public interest litigation petition on introducing eco-cabs in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh.

During the previous hearing, the issue of ignoring rickshaw stands and converting them into taxi stands cropped up before the High Court, following which the UT Administration and civic body were asked to file their replies.

Despite six adjournments on the request of the two authorities, the Administration failed to file its reply in the court.

Thieves decamp with cash, jewellery

Mohali, March 22
Thieves decamped with cash, gold jewellery and mobile phones from a house in Phase XI.

According to the police, Pritam Kaur, occupant of the house, said she had gone to Gurdaspur in connection with a case on March 14. When she returned, she found that her house had been ransacked.

The complainant told the police that she had been awarded with three gold medals, which were also taken away by the thieves apart from gold rings, Rs 15,000 and cellphones. — OC

One more student held for damaging property

Mohali, March 22
The police has arrested one more student in connection with an incident in which armed men went on the rampage and damaged property at Phase XI here on the night of March 3.

SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said here today that the arrested student was identified as Jaswinder Singh (22), a resident of Sector 41, Chandigarh, and a student of BA-II.

Gurpreet Singh Brar, the main accused, a resident of Badshahpur in Patiala district, was arrested earlier. He was a first-year student at DAV College, Sector 10, Chandigarh.

He said the police was conducting raids to arrest the remaining suspects.

A case under Sections 452, 457, 380, 427, 506, 148 and 149 of the IPC had been registered in this regard on the compliant of Mohan Inder Singh Virk. In the incident, furniture and windowpanes of Virk’s house were damaged, apart from cars of neighbours parked in the area.

Brar and his friends had attacked Virk’s house at Phase XI. Brar’s friend, Parry, who is also a final-year student of DAV College, Chandigarh, and five other friends were the suspects in the incident.

Chandigarh, March 22
With 24 jeeps, 25 cars and 23 bikers, the oldest running motor sport event of the country, SJOBA Thunderbolt Sub-Himalayan Rally, took off with the Super Special Stage today here in the city. The motor sport will run its 26th edition this year.

Today, the Super Special Stage of the rally, that was held at the Dasehra Ground at Sector 34, saw rallyists racing on the dirt track to clock the maximum points, which will add to their final tally.

The rally will officially take off from St John's High School, Sector 26, tomorrow. Rally Endurance will leave at 6.30 am. Punjab Finance Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa will flag off Rally Extreme at 7 am.

The motorsport titans, who are locking horns at the event, are Suresh Rana of Manali and Sandeep Sharma of Delhi, in Rally Extreme. Rana is the king of marathon motor sport rallying in the country, with back to back wins in the Maruti Suzuki Raid De Himalaya and the Maruti Suzuki Desert Storm. Sandeep Sharma has ranked at the top in Indian National Rally Championship (INRC) and other major motorsport events of the country.

In the bikers category, the most formidable competitors are Jes David of Jaipur and Mohit Verma and Deepak Madaan, of Chandigarh.

Over 125 rallyists from various parts of the region and the country are going to vie for top honours at this much-loved motorsport event. “The event is going to be even more exciting and challenging this year because of the new route and the challenging stages planned for it,” stated Sanjiv Kumar, president, St John’s Old Boys Association (SJOBA).

The rally boasts of a total of 11 competitive stages and it carries total prize money of about Rs 2,50,000.

Giving details today, secretary SJOBA Mr Shivam Garg said, "On March 23, the rallyists will be flagged off from St John’s School and they will pass through six competitive stages on their way to Shimla for the overnight halt. On March 24, they will return to Chandigarh passing through an entirely new route.”

Talking about the changes in the route, SPS Ghai, Clarke-of-Course said, “On Day three, especially, the rallyists will experience some very exciting tracks. On day one, the fast, broad off-roading stage from Mallah to Bhoj Nagar via Nerikala is going to challenge both man and machine. On day two, comes the fast downhill stage from Jhajja to Ashwani Khud. Day two also has the fast drive from Koti village to Chalada, which is half uphill and half downhill. All the stages have medical and other safety backups put in place by the SJOBA.

Manipur win laurels in sepak takraw

In double final matches of the 15th Sub-Junior Sepak Takraw National Championship, Nagaland beat Mizoram by 15-10, 15-5, 15-7 (3-0) in boys category and UP beat Maharashtra by 15-13, 15-8, 15-3 (3-0) in girls category.

In final match (Regu), Manipur beat Delhi by 15-5, 8-15, 15-11, 11-15, 15-9 (3-2) in boys category. In girls: Manipur beat Odisha: 15-11, 16-14, 15-12 (3-0).

Closing ceremony of the game was held today at Mount Carmel School, Sector 47, Chandigarh. Chief guest Madhu Bala (w/o Union Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal) distributed the prizes and medals to the winners.

She congratulated the Chandigarh Sepak Takraw Association for organising such a thrilling event in Chandigarh. At the closing ceremony, the students of Mount Carmel School, Sector 47, Chandigarh, performed Bhangra.

Victorious, Maa Aashirwad clubs register victory

The first day of cricket tournament organised by the Delhi Cricket Club at Barwala Cricket Stadium saw the inaugural match played between Unayal Cricket club and Maa Ashirwad Club.

Batting first, Maa Aashirwad team played beautifully and managed to score 178 for 5 wickets in 20 over. A knock of 70 scores by Ankush in 44 balls along with Harish Garg’s 36 scores in 34 helped the team piling up a good total.

Unayal Club, on other hand, lost the match by 40 runs as it could manage only 138 for 9 in 19 over.

In second match of the day, the Victorious Club defeated Delhi Cricket Club while chasing a big score.

Delhi won the toss and bat first. It scored a total of 173 for 6 wickets in 20 overs. Chasing the score, Victorious scored 174 for 5 in 19 overs and won the match by 5 wickets in hand.

Tomorrow, the Victorious Club will play against Unayal Cricket Club and the ICL Panchkula will play against Maa Aashirwad at Barwala Stadium.

20 selected for cricket academy

Mohali, March 22
A total of 85 budding cricket players from various schools and academies participated in the trials conducted to select the players for the Non-Residential Cricket Academy of PCA, here today.

The trials were conducted for boys (U-12 to U-14) age group. All the players were tested for their ability with the bat and ball. A total of 15 players and five stand-bye players were shortlisted after the trials. Sushil Kapoor, spokesperson PCA, said the third phase of trials will be held tomorrow at Baradari Ground Patiala (10 am). — TNS
