Raise a toast
Grabbing a drink during summer comes as easy as reflex action. While some of the drinks promise to live up to their names, others just sound like a random pick from a shade card! From the blended fruit drinks and the creative twists to even the classic lemonade, here's bringing you the revised beverage menus from across Chandigarh.
On the menu
There are some who swear by the plain aqua, while others want their drinks a little twisted. After all, a round of drinks should sound like fun! At Park Plaza's Cinnamon there's a range of twenty-five cocktails and eight to ten mocktails to choose from. Says Pushpendra Singh, restaurant manager, "We've just revised our menu and introduced Chocolate Snake, which comprises milk, coffee and chocolate. Then there's Purple Rain, which has black grape juice, lemonade and pineapple in it while Khus Elaichi has khus, pineapple and lemonade. The basic aim of all summer drinks is to have at least one cooling ingredient as the base." At the Taj, while they may not have revised the menu, there's a host of staples one can stick to. Shares the bartender, "We have as many as thirty to thirty-five cocktails and eight mocktails. There's Cosmopolitan, which remains the eternal favourite of our guests. That's basically cranberry juice, vodka and cointreau. And while all the mocktails sell really well, there's one called Kaali, which is quite a hit. It has coke as the base, with ginger, rock salt and lime juice in it." Moving on, Pewter Room is already set to welcome spring. "We have tried to customise the drinks to suit the palate of the people in this region," shares Annu Singh, the director. If not the drinks, then the names will certainly sound exotic. There's Smoked Opal Martini, with vodka, black pepper, pineapple and orange in it. Heaven in 26 comes packed with vodka, coffee, banana and vanilla and Chilli Juniper has gin, Thai chilli and lemongrass for ingredients. There's also the 26th Devil that contains vodka, apple, green chilli and ginger. She adds, "And if someone really wants to indulge further, there are drinks like Luxury Mojito, made with champagne, which are perfect for a romantic evening." Moving on, Bubbles, the bar at Pride KC Hotel and Spa, boasts of Purple Rain, Cocobana, Blue Lagoon, Casmopolitine and Caprioschka. We bet, the summer sounds fun even to those who hate it!
What's in a name?
Well, everything. At least, enough to get you started! "When we make the menu, the drinks and their ingredients come first and the names later. The names are given according to the recipe or the colour of the drink. They are basically to give some hint as to what the cocktail or the mocktail looks like or contains or how is it prepared." Some of the classic names like Bloody Mary or Virgin Mary are never tampered with, while for the rest, the team sits down together and comes up with wacky names," shares Tirthankar, bartender with city-based caterers. "Names are just a symbolic introduction to the concoction. They are names to tantalize the senses and also attract attention, but they ought to be borrowed either from the ingredients of the drink or the way of preparation," opines Ajay Mathur, executive chef, Pride KC Hotel and Spa. As long as the drink cools, let the rounds continue! manpriya@tribunemail.com

Driving force
"Why aren't there any pop-stars, everybody either has to be a music star or a Bollywood star? Why can't there be more Britney Spears?" Music producer Bally Sagoo cannot understand why someone wouldn't want to become a pop-star! He, however, would love to see many in the near future. Well, future cannot be predicted, but what can be is how his album Future Shock is doing in the present!
"It is already doing awesome," says Bally, who has come out with an album after a gap of ten years. "I wasn't in any hurry; I was working on the album. Future Shock is a fresh album with no remixes; just original music. It has been released in India with the Universal and internationally under my own record company Fresh Dope Records," adds Sagoo, who auditioned almost 1,000 people for this album. Future Shock has 15 original sound tracks. "I have used fresh lyrics in this and have also experimented with various sounds. It is not just Bhangra; the album has newness and different notes to offer." Bally has a long list of hit remixes to his credit, but this time he had a different intention. "I wanted to do original music, which I have done before as well; with Future Shock I wanted to bring the flavour of international music," says Bally, who has been busy with a lot of international projects. Future Shock definitely packs up original soundtracks, but for a music fan Bally Sagoo's remixes are the lifeline of any party. "I have made all kinds of music; this time for instance I have added soft romantic notes as well. It is easy to spin a song, but original has its own flavour," says Bally, who has also been getting offers from Bollywood. Coming back to the question that he still hasn't found an answer to — why don't we have any pop stars! He decides to answer it himself, "I wish there were more of these stars because there are so many genres that one can do wonders with." Bally doesn't mind doing a Punjabi film, something that comes naturally to a Punjabi, "First, I am so glad that movies are not very long nowadays, I would rather watch a 90-minute film. About films, I did attempt one, so next time something good comes and I find sense in it, why not." jasmine@tribunemail.com

Creative confluence
The work of art is a unique result of a unique temperament. — Oscar Wilde
Here’s a progression of thought, an idea of a kind, which stems from the roots of the talent that evolved over the years. On Monday, the Lalit Kala Akademi, National Academy of Art, Garhi, in association with the Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi organised a multimedia art workshop at the Government Museum and Art Gallery, Sector 10. They also paid a tribute to Ganesh Pyne, a veteran contemporary artist, who died on March 12. The workshop is perhaps the first of its kind in the country. While epitomising the need for interaction that propels the exchange of culture and ideas, Rajan Fulari, concept and co-ordinator of the workshop, says, “The concept of this workshop initiates from the idea to merge different streams of art, including painting, sculpture, digitography, ceramics, installation, printmaking and new media on one platform.” He details on the functioning of the workshop, “The workshop will remain open to all and they can interact with the artists at work too. Though the workshop is exclusively based on individual performance, the artists of various streams can incorporate each other’s works while giving them due credit for the same. Meanwhile, Gagan Vij, a senior artist and sculptor, will be the mentor for the nine young artists.” He adds, “We will also showcase performing artistes through the visual medium.” Gagan Vij, a celebrated sculptor, who works on figurative bronze sculptures, defines his fountainhead of creative talent while explaining his course of conduct during the ongoing workshop, “One of the most recent of my works is the Sun Dial, which works like the Jantar Mantar and is placed at the Sarai Kale Khan, Delhi. I will be guiding the nine artists with the best of my abilities, but I aim at harnessing and honing their talent. I have already seen the works of the artists and they are a much evolved rendition of the talent that each of them is catering to. However, I want to keep this pursuit as eco-friendly as possible. Also, you can see the final works on display at the exhibition that will be put up on March 25.” The artists participating in the workshop are Manjot Kaur (painting), Nayan Kalita (printmaking), Vijay Kumar (digitographic) from Chandigarh and Chetnaa Verma (printmaking), Manmeet sandhu (video), Mansi Verma (performance), Rajesh Ram (installation), Soumen Basu (ceramics) and Suvajit Samanta (sculpture) from Delhi. On till March 25 from 10am to 6pm. amarjot@tribunemail.com
Remembering the legend “I’m only whole when I’m painting.” These were the words of India’s exceptional exponent of contemporary art-Ganesh Pyne. A documentary based on his life and influences which complemented his style was presented during the workshop as a tribute to Pyne, who hailed from Bengal. While his initial works were inspired by Rabindranath Tagore, he later embarked on animation to seek refuge from his earlier influences. A man of peculiar disposition, as he was, he would use morbid creatures in his paintings. Also, his surroundings and relations inspired his works which were essentially an amalgam of the East and the West, but translated in a language that was purely Indian. That distortion and exaggeration remained the key elements of his works; they also celebrated the Bengali culture.

How to play better?
Jesse Grewal Improving a player’s performance on the course does not necessarily come from only one aspect, which is improving the golf swing. There are six major areas which influence the way we play - The golf swing The short game Putting The mind game/psychology Club fitting Fitness While I have written for the last two years on the technique of the golf swing, short game and putting, I would like to stress on the other three. To improve the level of the game in India it is important to train specialists in each of these fields. So, while we continue as teaching professionals to improve our understanding of the technique we must understand the player’s strengths and weaknesses in the other three. Fortunately, we have specialists who are doing a great job in this region. Irina Singh, a four time national ladies golf champion has specialised in sports psychology from the US and is doing a commendable job with professionals, amateurs and juniors. Gurbaaz Mann, a professional tour player has a great understanding on fitting golf clubs to a players swing and Pauline JM Singh, a Golfsmith club fitter has a well equipped workshop to carry out the work. Sagar Dewan is a TPI certified golf fitness trainer and is working on golf specific exercises. TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) is one of the world’s top biomechanical training institutes for golf. In December 2012 the National Golf Academy of India organised a Level 1 TPI certification course for golf fitness and a lot of us teaching professionals and some fitness trainers did this course and got certified. This has helped us look at biomechanical shortcomings and not keep trying to ask a player to make a particular move in the swing which they are physically unable to do. In the next series of articles I would like to go through the tests and exercises required to make a correct swing. If any person is unable to do any of them correctly then they would have that limitation in their golf swing. It is therefore possible to predict the shape of a person’s swing from their range of motion. For each we have to check the mobility or range of motion of the joint and stability which is the strength of the muscle to make a smooth motion. (Grewal has coached several national champions and professionals apart from being coach of the Indian golf team for the Eisenhower Cup (World Cup) in 2008. He is currently the Director of National Golf Academy of India and CGA Hero Honda Golf Academy. If you have any queries get in touch with him at parexcellence@tribunemail.com) |

Win(e)some proposition
The weekend saw the crème d la crème tasting and sipping exotic wine while enjoying a pleasant evening on the Vilaggio Italiano at the Terrace Grill at Park Plaza. The scene was complete with an array of hors d’ ovures and an umpteen variety of cheese to complement the wine.
The event was organized by the Seagram’s venture of Nine Hills Wine depicting the flavour of the hills surrounding Nashik. Hosted by Isheeta Gupta, the variety included Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, Sauignon, Viognier and Shiraz Rose. “The attempt is to woo our generally ‘scotch happy’ customers towards wine and make people aware that wine is not just for the ladies,” says Shiv K Mehan, general manager, Park Plaza. Tanya and Nisha were a little wary at first when a sip of Sauvignon left a tingling effect. “But then the pronounced aromas of fruits, especially pineapple and fresh lime, took over the tangy taste,” they quipped. A doctor couple, Neerja and Ajay, felt that such wine tasting sessions made them feel like connoisseurs. “Here we can comfortably appreciate wine based on their appearance, smell and of course taste,” they say. The more important aspect taught during the session was about snacks that complement different types of wine. The red wine should be taken with meat, barbeque dishes and mushrooms while the white wine with salads and seafood and all types of cheese. Olives go well with both types. An avid traveller Naveen Bhaskar shares, “I have collected lot of rare wine on my travels abroad but serving it is difficult due to the lack of knowledge. We can benefit from such sessions.” Rolling their sips of wine in their mouth and trying to differentiate one taste from the other, the participants had a good time. The F&B manger Uniesh Yadav promised, “We will have many such evenings.” So bid goodbye to scotches and cokes and welcome wine!

Forming a tight-knit relationship with Adidas originals since 2003, Jeremy continues to design unisex apparel and footwear that is high energy, surreal and most certainly fun, playing with bright prints and unexpected shapes.

An all-over eagle print carries throughout the collection and is also executed on Jeremy’s signature winged high top shoe. Other highlights include the JS chain cage track top with cut-out body and basketball jerseys reinterpreted with uneven hems, fringing and woven fabrics. His affinity for animals continues: Sneakers adorned with sunglass-wearing poodles and bears. Walking on colour!
A pair of feet clad in yellow, red or cherry coloured shoes would have once evoked sniggers and giggles, but one can now swagger in the then ‘loud’ and now ‘cool’ colours. These bright and colourful footwear have taken the fashion circuit by storm.
Although fluorescent colours were the domain of girls, but men too are stepping into this colourful territory with panache. “Gone are the days of black, brown and white for men,” says Vishvesh, a fashion studies student. “Men are looking cooler with their reds, yellow, purples and even pinks,” he says. Girls are wearing brighter colours for casual wear as well as party wear. “Rather than raising eyebrows, these now grab eyeballs,” says Simarpreet, a MCom student. “The trend of colourful footwear is seen in both casual and semi-formal leather shoes,” says Charanjot from Sona Foot jewels. “If you thought yellow is a bit too loud, then think again! Yellow is the hot-selling colour of the season,” he says. “I think people are bored of looking at black and white feet,” says Ishu, a model. “It is good to see some colour on the feet of men,” he adds. “I used to see such colourful shoes on fashion shows in Europe a few years back and used to wonder who would wear such ludicrous colours, but the ‘fashion’ has reached here,” says another fashion student. These are not for everyone, say fashionistas. “You need the attitude and panache to carry them off well,” says Ishu. “Otherwise these would still look ‘loud’ and ‘ludicrous’,” he says.

Walking into unsafe zone
Suparn Verma's upcoming venture Aatma blends elements of domestic violence with horror and the director says lead actress Bipasha Basu went through hell emotionally while shooting the film. Aatma has actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead alongside Bipasha. The film also stars Shernaz Patel and child actress Doyel Dhawan in supporting roles.
"Both the actors were willing to go into the unsafe zone that they have never been in before. For Nawaz it was a very deep personal space that he had to go in and get totally psyched about. Bipasha has gone through hell emotionally during the making of 'Aatma'. "I mean it has traumatised both the actors. It has traumatised me while writing it and I can only imagine what impact it will have on the audience," Suparn said. When asked why he zeroed down upon the two actors to be part of his film, the 38-year-old filmmaker said, "I signed Bipasha before Raaz 3 happened. We began shooting four months after the release of the film, which is good for us because it was a huge hit. "And I signed Nawaz after Kahaani. Gangs of Wasseypur happened while we were two months into shooting. I did not base my casting on their last films. I chose them as per the requirements of the roles," said Suparn. The journalist-turned-filmmaker made an entry into Bollywood as a writer for the 2002 film Chhal. He made his directorial debut with Fardeen Khan starrer Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena in 2005 and then followed it up with multi-starrer Acid Factory four years later in 2009. He has also written the screenplay for other thrillers, including Karam, Zameen and Qayamat. Aatma stars Bipasha as a single mother and Nawazuddin as her husband, who comes to take away their daughter after his death. "It has a simple story line - the mother and father are fighting and the father has come back to take the daughter but the big spin is that he is dead. The whole tussle is of love but with love also comes horror because when love goes wrong you have casualties," Suparn said. Aatma will hit theatres on March 22. — PTI

"Gaga's spending millions on her wedding to Taylor Kinney and Donatella Versace's designing a typically over-the-top dress which on its own will cost thousands," a source said. "She thinks white is cheesy and wants black and gold silk with all these crazy removable bits," the source added. The extra bits include a removable skirt and train, which would then be converted into a separate gown for the ceremony. The 26-year-old star and Kinney have had trouble finding time for the wedding because of the singer's tight schedule. The year ahead
If your birthday is March 19...
This year, it will be necessary to adopt a parental role toward your best friend, lover, or business partner. Recently, your colleagues have undergone an intense period at work. Now it's time for them to rest, relax and regroup. Do your best to pamper them. There's no better way to repay all the affection and support they've given you. The stars smile down at you and restore energy this year, but suggest that you should not reveal your winning cards and just remain prudent. Entrepreneurs will need to be particularly attentive to business; it is worth preparing a clear action plan and keeping your eyes wide open. You will know what you have to do when the time is right, despite the fact that emotional demands distract you from practical endeavours and consequential confusion tears at your heart. You must express your personal needs in front of others, who are unaware of your higher calling. Respect your insights big time, especially about children, behaviour and money! Family members will need extra 'scrutiny' and certainly more guidance. You appear vulnerable to fatigue; ill-health and distractions are likely along with other mistakes. It is a happy period in terms of money and luck; rise in inflows possible. Income will be good due to hardwork and your dynamic nature. Investment will be lucky throughout. Avoid speculation and increasing overheads. New friends are likely. For some of you, the year will bring many ups and downs.
