Breakfast notes
There can be no denying the relevance of breakfast in our daily routine. This International Breakfast Day we bring you some options available in the City Beautiful
Jasmine Singh

Despite our best efforts, despite the hundred theories supporting why breakfast is an important meal of the day or why one should eat breakfast like a king, this is one meal we conveniently ignore. Excuses come in different forms---I hate eating early, I don't get the time to eat a leisurely breakfast, etc.etc.

Restaurants, cafes and hotels have whipped up their menus and have given breakfast a lavish space, but how often would you take out time to catch the buffet breakfast spread? On International Breakfast Day we bring the best on the breakfast table, from in and around Chandigarh.

Morning tips

Nutritionists have been advocating the reason behind taking breakfast in a million ways…”It is the most important meal of the day. This is the meal that provides you the energy, nutrients that are required to go through the rest of the day's work,” shares Pritpal Kaur, Mohali-based nutritionist who has seen youngsters and corporate employees suffer irritation, lack of concentration and headache because they miss breakfast regularly. “Not only this, proper and timely breakfast keeps your body weight in check. Normally, we don't get time to eat the whole day. Sometimes, this is where the reserve energy comes into play,” she adds.

All about breakfast

What are the best edibles that make for a healthy breakfast and what time should they be… these are the questions every homemaker has to struggle with every morning. Says Charu Singh, dietician from Patiala, who doesn't advocate any strict time to 'go for the breakfast,' “Not everyone's body functions in the same way, which means not everyone is hungry in the morning. Wait for a while and pick up foods that will give you energy.”

Charu makes it simpler by making a list that includes boiled eggs, fresh fruit juice (avoid papaya) seasonal of course, a butter toast in a simple breakfast. Yes, you can't go through the same fare for the entire week. In that case, says Manmeet Kahlon, a kinder garten teacher in Chandigarh, who fixes a new breakfast every day for kids, “Change keeps the interest alive, fruits and sandwich for Monday, maybe, poha, daliya(with lots of vegetables), a glass of juice and five almonds on Tuesday and so on. If you like to dig into parathas with ghee, Manmeet is okay with it. “Then don't club it with eggs or anything heavy. Just a glass of juice to wash it down is good.” Avoid anything spicy for the morning, including boiled vegetables because they are low on energy.

Buffet spread

Breakfast has always been on the menu of all hotels and restaurants. But how popular is the section with the people. Bobby Garg, owner, Oven Fresh, doesn't see the culture of having breakfast out as an important one. “Most people still like eating at home. It is only recently that the weekend breakfast culture is picking pace,” he shares naming foods on the menu which their place offers. “Ham and cheese omelette, pan cakes, sausage filled omelette roll find place at Oven Fresh. We will soon be introducing international breakfast at our newly opened outlet at Mansa Devi Complex sector-5.”

Another place in Chandigarh that makes breakfast a do it yourself is Buffet Hut. The place is starting its seven days breakfast from coming April. As the managing director Ajay Gauba shares, “I find breakfast a compulsory meal, so we offer people a variety they can choose from rather than just putting it on the menu.” Muesli as compared to cereals has more takers. Ajay jokes, “We are Punjabis, so even if we are having cereals we will still want half or quarter of a parantha.”

Healthy way

Make way for breakfast in your schedule by making little changes.

  • Pick 2-3 foods, including at least one from each of the following food groups:

Bread and grain (.cereal, toast, muffin)

Milk and milk product (low-fat yogurt, low-fat milk).

Fruit or vegetable group (bananas, apples, carrots)

  • Replace or accompany that morning cup of coffee with a glass of orange juice or milk.
  • Make an omelette. You can shorten preparation time by chopping your vegetables ahead of time.
  • Get up 15 minutes earlier. You can fix and consume a healthy breakfast in 15 minutes or less.

Comic effect
Serena Miglani

When we mention the word Jodi, the expression that comes to your mind is 'made for each other'. Indeed, a look at Krushna Abhishek and Sudesh Lehri convinces you that the dynamic duo is much more than partners in 'comedy'. In Chandigarh to enthrall the audience with their hilarious gags in the 'Connect Super Jodi -Grand Finale', the jocular jodi manages to spread their infectious laughter with their act.

The man and wife

Referring themselves as the mian and biwi, the pair shares a laugh on being asked what brings them together. “We were not paired together initially for the comical reality show, Comedy Circus. Coincidently, we landed up together and the journey has been worthwhile.” says Sudesh. Their comic tadkas with another adept stand up comedian Siddarth Jadhav have increased the peals of laughter manifold. But how are they different from the other jodis and pat comes the reply, “We complement each other through our own opposite styles of expertise.”

Comedy hoopla

Performing in the Comedy Circus for six successive seasons and 450 episodes on a roll, their punches and comic timing have never been monotonous. “Raj, our writer is proficient and spontaneous in writing punches and satires,” says Krushna. Talking about satires and spoofs, many celebrities have been in the hit list and they agree that travesty has been used solely for entertainment, which is splendidly taken in the right spirit. On the double meaning content and vulgarity Sudesh adds, “Our sole aim is to tickle the funny bone of the audiences, along with a social message. Our intent is to keep the gags decent and suitable for the family audience.” Reality shows have been a boon to them and their charm has come a long way. But, is the competition increasing with the profusion of talent especially the worth mentioning comedy whiz, Kapil Sharma. Krushna disagrees, “Kapil is a solo champion and we cannot match up to his comic talents. It all depends upon sustainability, if you sustain, you retain.”

So, what is next when it comes to entertainment and Sudesh says, “I plan to do endless seasons of comedy shows and spread the giggling effect.” The second half of the comical duo, Krushna has more in store with upcoming films such as Mr Money with Rajpal Yadav and an untitled film with Tips.

Creative streak
Music director Sachin Gupta listens to the voice of his heart while creating melody
Jasmine Singh

He wouldn't really know the exact source of inspiration, but tilted towards the left, hidden inside a cage (made of ribs) is this reddish pink organ, the heart. Exactly, the heart! This is where the songs come from. This is the place I look into whenever I have to create a track.” Sachin Gupta, the music director of Mere Dad Ki Maruti, cannot pinpoint as how he makes music other than the fact that everything he does, comes straight from his heart.

Mere Dad Ki Maruti has some great foot- tapping Punjabi music, which isn't either laced or dripping with Punjabi flavour. Laughs Sachin, the music composer who created the music album Doorie, “It is like serving butter chicken on a banana leaf. I can only create something that I have seen, heard and experienced myself. I have heard a lot of Punjabi music and also worked with singers like Mika, Apache Indian, so my Punjabi music is basically mixing of different genres.”

Having worked in close to fifteen pop albums and with some of the biggest singers in India, Pakistan and worldwide, this music composer only considers himself a guitarist who wants to see all music genres grow. “When it is music there should be no boundaries. I started with rock, did classical and then Bollywood. It was a smooth transition in every case.”

Sachin's music comes from his experiences and what he feels. “If I am jumping around, the track will have that energy; if there is any break up then the track will be in sync with the feelings,” he shares, hoping there are not many break ups coming!

When he makes music he just shuts down his mind. This is as simple as it gets. So, the rocking music of Mere Dad Ki Maruti comes from a mind that closes to an open heart! “Well in case of Bollywood music I go by the script and basic outline of the film. I don't attempt to do anything I don't understand. Which is why my music is not hard-core Punjabi, it is Punjabi the way I have known it,” adds Sachin, the music director composer who gave Punjabi actor singer Diljit Dosanjh his first Bollywood break. “He has got a powerful voice and more than that he is humble despite his star status in Punjab.”

Sachin is called the Flying Finger Melody, a tag that he lives up to. “Someone saw me play guitar when I was 16, my fingers probably moved very fast on the guitar and this is how I got the name.” For someone whose two compositions Doorie and Maula were featured in the film Spanish Beauty which was the dubbed version of Spanish Film La Mujer de mi Hermano (My Brother's Wife) featuring Spanish superstar Barbara Mori, Punjabi music in films is not a necessity or a must do.

“If a film requires Punjabi music it should be there, if it doesn't it shouldn't be.” Sachin has completed his next Bollywood project Isaaq, and a couple of more lined up has a chance to showcase his work through Bollywood. “I don't know how to read or write music, all I know is to knock my heart when I have to make one.”

Up, close and personal

  • Sachin's tryst with music started at a very young age when his mother gifted him a guitar at the age of 10. By 16, the guitar had become an extension of this talented young man and got him the Best Asian Guitar player award.
  • It was while performing at BITS Pilani at their annual fest that a member of the renowned Indian Fusion band Mrigya noticed Sachin and invited him to join the band.
  • For more than 3 years that he was a part of Mrigya, Sachin performed in over 600 concerts both in India and abroad as the lead guitarist. His lucky break came at one such concert in London where Sachin met the then vice president of Tips industries who offered him to move to Mumbai and work as a music producer/director under Tips.
  • He took a giant leap by composing a couple of songs in films like Strangers and Jugaad. His first film as a solo music director was Dil Kabaddi in 2008 which featured the chart topping hit Ehsaan. With this song, Sachin also made his debut as a singer.
  • Sachin is also trying his hand at acting and is currently shooting for his first film, A-Major.

Women in a man’s world
An unusual exhibition Pratibimba 1 celebrates the equality of sexes through the creativity of male artists…
Amarjot Kaur

The battle of sexes has resulted in creating a divide of thought and expression, which is predominantly either that of a male or a female. At the Museum of Fine Arts, Panjab University, as many as 18 male artists from across the nation exhibit their works of genius at the exhibition titled Pratibimba 1…inseparable mutuality, wherein they celebrate the concept of mutual interdependence of both the sexes.

“I’m extending an olive branch to the long-drawn combat that has been associated with gender inequality. However, Indian art conceptualises and represents gender equality in the form of an image — Ardhanaishvar, the etiological meaning of which is equal,” says Tirthankar Bhattacharya, chairman of Department of Fine Arts, Panjab University and the curator of the exhibition.

The walls of the four galleries at the museum are adorned with the expressions of emancipation, which finds its roots in the ideology of the male artists and their representation of womanhood. While the picturesque works of Bheem Malhotra resonate in the landscapes which seem to decipher the ever changing tempers of a woman, Satwant Singh Sumail celebrates the dainty charming disposition of a woman that manifests in the incisive bond, which stems from her philanthropic self and her connect with nature. Using women as a subject of his paintings, Satwant details the traditional values that are symbolised by the use of flowing veils and sublime features of her physical beauty.

Sanjay Kumar’s painting titled Ladies Sangeet, for which he has used wood cut as a technique, celebrates the spirit of womanhood on a canvas at least 10 feet wide. Meanwhile, Vishal Bhatnagar’s painting depicts a man and a woman in complete harmony with each other as he paints them nude and bald. Cultivating the expression of self, Anand Jaiswal uses digital prints to express his devastation with the restrictions that are associated with the worldly pleasures.

Gajraj Chavan, Pramod Arya, Anand Sharma, Anand Shende, Jagdeep Jolly, Madan Lal, Mahesh Prajapati, Rajesh Sharma, Rajender Kumar, Ramchandra Pokhle, Ram Pratap Verma and Shrikant Kadam also employ women as protagonists. Needless to say their paintings exude the passion, enigma and strength that is characterised by the notion of female gender.

Artist on board

Subhash Shorey, who is displaying his works at the Panjab University after 26 long years, says, “I have showcased my paintings at the university after 26 years as this concept is very dear to my heart. That a woman gave me birth, and that I am married to a woman and that I have two daughters, inspires my idea of womanhood.” While explaining the technique that he uses in all five of his paintings titled-Mindscape, Creation, Destruction and Preservation, he shares, “Through my paintings I want to allude that humans were made from the five elements of nature, which are common between both men and women. I have used etching, aquatint and print making as a technique for my paintings.”

Summer sensations
Satish Narula

When we talk about planting bulbs, the only plant that comes to mind is gladiolus. But it is essentially a winter flower, though there are a few inferior types available even for the summer. Do we have some good bulbous plants for summers? I know the question may appear to be elementary but for an amateur, this would be a good piece of information. Yes, there are many to choose from, like hippeastrum (amaryllis lily), zephyranthes lily, tuberose, day lily etc for the summer.

The tongue twisting Hippestream, the amaryllis lily is planted now and gives very showy flowers in the summer. This is the plant suitable for both the hills and plains. The flowers are borne on the terminal of a strap that emerges from the middle of the plant. The giant sized flowers are borne back-to- back in twos or fours and come in many colours. It may be pink, dark red, orange, crimson, yellow, white or a combination of these. The flowers could also be single or in multiple petal. The plant grows to a height of a foot-and-a-half or so and suit good for growing at the edge of the berms. It is also suitable for growing in bed or pots. The bulbs should first be kept in moist bag for two to three days and when the roots start swelling these should be planted in soil keeping one third of the bulb outside the soil.

It is not only about the giant size flowering lily but we have a fragrant species for outside sitting and that is tuberose. This is also known by the name Rajnigandha which means the flower that spreads sweet fragrance at night. This is the time to plant fresh bulbs. In case one has a bed in the garden for three to four years, it is the time to take out the clump of bulbs, separate these, keep these in shade for about four weeks and then do the replanting. The bulbs bear a bunch of flowers on the terminal that open one after the other and spread sweet fragrance at night and early morning. The lines are made one-and-a-half feet away and the bulbs are planted at six inches away from each other.

Zephyranthes lily is another short stature lily that grows to bloom during the summer months, nearing the monsoon. They normally come in three colours — white, pink and yellow. The plant is free flowering and two to two-and-a-half centimeter blooms appear at the terminal of plant that grows to one foot or so. The plants grow well around trees. They can also be multiplied by division of bulbs.

You may have planted one of the above flowers. Try this summers Eucharis, the flower that has good deep broad leaf foliage and the flowers appear as long stock emerging from the middle of the plant. The bulbs are planted now.

All messed up!
Poker straight hair is a thing of the past. Have fun with messy, crushed hair with a bold colourful streak
Tanya Malhotra

‘I love your new haircut’, ‘That hair colour is a killer’

‘You look so much younger’! Don’t you just love to hear it when you step out of a salon with something new ?

Surely, the blue streaks of Anushka Sharma and purple of Priyanka Chopra have brought yet another trend. Wet look, low ponytail and retro rocked last year. What is new this year? Praveen, hairstylist, Headmasters Salon-8, Chandigarh, says “Emo haircut with lot of layers is in. This unisex hair cut gives you a very young look and you can opt for any length,” he says. “Another hit is the ultra long hair. But if you are bold, go for a bob,” he adds.

Messy hairdos, curls and crushed hair are very much in demand.Fringes and massive hair accessories are back with a bang too. “Neutral and red hair colours with streaks of blonde or gold are still popular. On the other hand, bright colours have caught up with youngster,” say experts from Schwarzkopf and Lakme Salon. The trend isn’t just confined to women. Men too want to keep up with the latest fashion.

“I love experimenting with my hair. I recently got a red streak and quite honestly I was doubtful at first, but with all the compliments I got, I would love to try a new colour after this,” says Charlotte, MBA student. “Colouring your hair does affect the texture to an extent but why worry so much? Just make sure you use a good product and take a little care.” she adds.

Here’s something new! “Demand for hair extension is growing. Women want long hair with good volume and we here make sure they get their desired looks. We have detachable as well has permanent extension available,” says Praveen.

“I went for extensions. My long hair suits me so well that I can’t help but flaunt them,” says Chitwan . The best part is that there are no side effects! Curl, straighten or blow-dry. You can carry your extension for as long as four months. But hair extensions do cost a pretty penny. The cost per inch is around Rs 500.

STAR TRACK
Getting fit with Vidyut Jammwal

Working out: Vidyut Jammwal

Vidyut Jammwal wowed everyone with his fitness levels and awesome stunts in Force. Though he played a villain in the movie, he stood his own opposite John Abraham. He also won many fans due to his chocolate-skin and sharp features. The new hunk talks about his fitness regime, diet and special skills.

Special skills

I have been doing martial arts since the age of three so I have lots of training. I have done all my stunts in Commando without the use of cables or body-doubles and of course, please do not repeat them at home. I specialise in Kalaripayattu, which is an ancient Indian martial arts form and that helped me design the stunts myself too.

Fitness regime

I work out seven days a week. Five days are martial arts training and two days are weight training. I combine gymnastics, acrobatics, street stunts and the like. I focus a lot on lower body training and do push-ups, squats, lunges, parallel bars, Roman rings and calf exercises. I run as well.

Break even

I follow my heart and my feelings and do not follow a strict regimen. I listen to my body and let my body decide the kind of training it wants to undergo. Sometimes, I feel tired and want a break so I do not train on that day. For me, exercise has to be fun and it cannot seem like a chore.

Myths and facts

I eat when I am hungry and I am a vegetarian. So there goes the notion that you need meat to build a physique! I drink more than five liters of water a day to detoxify myself and stay hydrated. I need it because of my training and the heat here. I have muesli with milk and fruits like kiwi for breakfast. I eat a lot of tofu as it is my major source of protein.

Message to all

I feel people need to stick to regimes that stimulate and suit them. Otherwise, exercise can seem like a big daunting task. I love the training I do and it is custom-made for me. The goal ought to be long-term fitness.

No matter what

On top: Kareena Kapoor Khan

Kareena Kapoor Khan will be paid Rs 10 crore to endorse a real-estate firm that is based in Delhi. Some girls have all the luck.

If it comes through, this will be her highest paid endorsement and will put her ahead of her contemporaries. It looks like marriage has not had any detrimental effect on her popularity.

Cut above the rest

Blanket ban: Sohail Khan

While Arbaaz Khan's Dabangg, and its sequel, reaped a major box office benefit from its two popular item songs, Arbaaz's brother Sohail has never been the one for planting tantalising Munnis and Sheilas into his films. None of Sohail's directorial ventures, so far, have featured an item song. It comes as no surprise that Sohail's new venture, featuring Salman Khan, would have no item song. Confirming the move, Sohail said, "My script doesn't demand it. And there is really no deeper design to it. It's just how the film is written now. I am only trying to be honest to the social-drama genre."

The reality check

Kanye West has urged girlfriend Kim Kardashian to slow down following her recent pregnancy scare and hospitalisation. The reality TV star was briefly hospitalised after feeling unwell on a flight from Paris to Los Angeles last week, reported a website.

"Kim's got a real wake up call. Kanye's been on her the last few weeks to slow down but she's carried on regardless," a source said. "Even her mom has been warning her to slow down but Kim's been on a hormone high, she's been using up her energy on working and not leaving much for the baby. It is a classic first time pregnancy error. Kim now realizes that she can't do it all the way she used to. She has to think about the baby's needs. It's definitely an adjustment," the source added.

The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star was advised by medicos to slow down her work and exercise regime after being given the all-clear last week. The 32-year-old is known to be working out regularly during her pregnancy with two trainers, one of them being Tracy Anderson.

Doctors have advised the television star to take adequate rest during her pregnancy. — PTI

Celebrating success

being a rebel: Manish Raisinghani

Popular show, Sasural Simar Ka (SSK) is soon going to complete two years. While many shows have gone off-air recently, SSK has managed to keep the viewers interested. The lead actor of the show, Manish Raisinghani, speaks about his role, the show and more.

Your show will complete two years soon. How does it feel?

It feels great because our show has not just completed the benchmark of 2 years, but has also completed it in style. The reason why I say this is because being a non-prime time slot, the show has been one of the top shows on TV. I guess that is due to the Rashmi Sharma effect as she specialises in turning non-prime time slots into a success with her Midas touch. I'm proud to be a part of this show.

Are you guys planning any celebrations?

We at SSK are always on for celebrations and we don't leave any opportunity to celebrate, so how can we miss out on this one!

What do you like the best about your character?

I like the rebel in him that only bows down to his lady love Roli. For now, the angry young side of Siddhant, my character, has been tapped, so enjoy his romantic side!

If you could change something about Siddhant, what it would be and why?

It's a female oriented show, so in the drama sequences men usually have to take a back seat. It takes a lot to act out a sequence like this because Sid, being a rebel, does not take a word against his family. It takes a lot to make those expressions look convincing.

Can you share something about the future track?

The future is simply unpredictable. We have fabulous writers who twist and turn stories on daily basis. So, with unpredictability, being the USP of our show, I will not spoil the viewing experience of my audience by spilling the beans. All I can say is that the future will bring a lot of drama, thrill, twists and turns.

What do you like to watch on TV?

I keep surfing channels. There's barely any time to watch TV..

Highlighting real issues

The acronym NRI brings forth dollar dreams in the Indian marriage market. While many NRI grooms turn out as responsible husbands, there are others who abandon their newly-wed wives soon after the wedding and never return. The upcoming serial, Gurbani that will be telecast on Colors, was inspired by an article that was published in a daily newspaper of Chandigarh, which revealed that nearly 30,000 innocent brides had been duped by their NRI husbands. Prashant Bhatt, fiction head of Colors said, "This show aims to spread awareness that marrying an NRI does not necessarily guarantee a happy marriage. The show also shows that there are some honest NRIs too." The show spreads the message that women should not wait for their unfaithful partners. Gurbani will be premiered on March 18 on Colors at 10:30 pm.

Beyond negativity

Rashi, the difficult bahu of the Modi household, is the most entertaining character of Star Plus' Saath Nibhana Saathiya. Rucha Hasabnis has indeed essayed the role of a spoiled bahu quite well. She says that her character Rashi is not really negative and though she is influenced by her mother, deep down inside, she is a good person.

A new beginning

Big leap: Aastha Choudhary

Niyati, the primetime soap that is telecast on Sahara One, is all set to move ahead. Besides the change in the storyline, the protagonist is changing too. Jayashree Soni, who was essaying the lead role from the beginning, will be replaced by Aastha Choudhary.

While Jayashree's character will die in the serial, her place will be taken by her daughter, who she will rename as Niyati! Dheeraj Kumar, producer of the show, says that after 500 episodes, the audience looks for a fresh storyline. "It is a creative call," he adds. With cities like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar, coming under the ratings purview, the storyline of new Niyati will be set in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh.

Unlike her mother, who plays the role of a housewife in the show, Niyati will be seen essaying the role of an IPS officer, who juggles her domestic and professional life.

Don't miss to see the new beginning in Niyati, starting on March 18, every Monday to Friday at 9.30 pm on Sahara One.

Too demanding:  Aamna Shariff

Sony TV has failed to garner much needed TRPs when it comes to their fiction space. However, the channel is hopeful that their upcoming line-ups will help them bag the numbers. Soon after launching Dil Ki Nazar Se Khoobsurat, the broadcaster is gung-ho about their next venture Optimystix's Chanchan with Sanaya Irani in the lead. Sources reveal that Chanchan will be replacing Hongey Judaa Na Hum, which is being pulled off air due to its poor performance. The show will end on March 21 and Chanchan will be premiered from March 25 onwards at 9 pm.

However, the drama does not end here. Aamna Shariff, the leading lady of Hongey Judaa Na Hum, has stopped shooting due to payment issues. The actress has not been seen on the sets for the last ten days now and she has no plans of returning till her concerns are met. A source informs, "Aamna stopped shooting the moment she learnt that the show is going off air. In fact, she told the makers that she will not resume till she receives her pay cheques (usually payments are made after the work is done, but Aamna wants her remuneration in advance)."

Hence, the creative team of the show has now decided to have a 'not so happy' ending. As shown so far, Muskaan has been kidnapped by some goons and she will die there. Though we tried contacting Aamna, but she remained unavailable for comment.
